Re: [slim] 7.4.2 nearing release, need your help!

2010-01-29 Thread Sike

I have 2 Squeezebox Radios at my parents house. They need the presets to
work, as they don't/can't fiddle with the stations every time they want
to listen to a radio station.

Are the presets fixed too?

Thats what i would like. Split it into 2 or 3 panes, with a now playing

Cant say i am ever likely to own an iPad though.

Think dashboards.
Make a number of layouts with 1, 2, 3, 4,5 or more "frames" and a

artists, artist's flickr pics, lyrics, You name it. Heck, make an API to
let it posible for others to develop stuff. Ok, I'm probably in over my

It may not be very iStuff-like to allow customization, but I think this

Please excuse my recent abscence from the forum.

We improved many details, Leif was a neverending fountain of
bug-reports.

The most notable new features are
- lyrics from lyrdb.com
- better coverart and image integration (facebook, flickr, remote

- hardened network engine
- WOL (currently beeing tested)
- slightly different browser-structure

I hope to be getting feedback on the WOL sometime this afternoon.
I will then upload a beta version of SCtrl 1.3

Re: [slim] 7.5 Release Date

2010-01-29 Thread bobkoure

I certainly hope that that's what they're doing.
IMO, we've now all had an experience of "release to a deadline" (7.4)
and know what that feels like.
Having spent almost all of my development life under deadline, I can
tell you that there's often a compromise on the good/soon axis (on
high-budget projects this can be cheap/soon, but with the problems in
adding resources it's really something more like good/soon). Nothing
surprising, if you think about it...
My hat's off to any development manager who can stick to his/her guns
enough to "release when it's ready".

Meanwhile... there's a development version of 7.5 if you want to play
with it. Have a look 'here'

[slim] Hardware store any 'Plugin' settings? (more Web control?)

2010-01-29 Thread sydsfloyd67

I'm not a programmer, nor do I really understand the 'box' hardware.
Please bring me up to speed. :)

Wouldn't one want to retain various settings made via SqueezeServer
Plugins through either on/off cycle or restarting, and then use them
when connecting to new 'Music Sources'? For example this might allow
custom displays and some other changes to the interface beging made
through SqueezeServer Plugins to be retained while moving to
mysqueezebox.com. Can the Squeezebox v3 (SB3) store anything other than
firmware locally in RAM? (If so, can/do Squeezeserver Plugins ever write
to this? Seems they do not.)

If not, would it be possible to implement plugins through a web
connection rather than Squeezeserver, say beginning with
mysqueezebox.com? If so, could someone make a Community web page(s) to
which Squeezebox could connect, and thereby implement features and
settings in the open source model?

(In my view, the potential hardware independence from the PC is the
uniqueness of the whole Squeeze platform. If one puts in dependence on a
laptop and Squeezeserver (and local MP3s), then there are better
PC-interface-centered approaches, for example an Airport Express with a
iPhone PC-remote.)

Thanks!
-SF

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-01-29 Thread erland

I think it would be a good idea to dedicate the half of the screen to a
Now Playing screen and the other half to a navigation/control screen.
Possibly also a screen saver mode when it's placed in the docking
station a a few meters away from where I'm sitting.

Things that would be nice when used as screen saver in the docking
station:
- Album art, large is good but I have a feeling it doesn't have to be a
lot larger than it is on the touch.
- Now playing information with larger font, artist, album, track.
- YouTube video of currently playing track (only video, not audio)
- Artist artwork, from LastFM or something similar. It's accessible
through Custom Scan already today.
- Big clock
- Preferably the the possibility to select what "view" you like to show
in different areas of the screen

When I have it in the hand it would also be nice to from the Now
Playing screen have access to:
- Play, pause, stop, fwd/rew controls (and other things needed)
- Easily access to presets/favorites
- Biography/AlbumReview plugin information about currently playing
artist/album
- Lyrics
- Shortcuts to configurable menus (similar to bottom toolbar on iPeng
on iPhone)
- Current playlist
- Track details of currently playing track

When navigating the library, we of course want things like:
- Playlist creation with drag&drop
- Information about currently browsed artist/album, compare with Custom
Browse page headers in web UI
- It feels like it might be good to use half the screen for navigation
menus and the other half for artist/album information or possibly a Now
Playing screen.

If something isn't supported in SBS and you need JSON support and can't
get Logitech to implement it, let us know.

I'm getting more and more exited when I think about the possibilities,
this is going to be great. Now, I'm just worried that I won't be able to
get a a 3G version in Sweden until after the summer due to some stupid
arrangements with 3G operators.

I'm not sure, it just felt like adding $130 to get 3G would be worth it
just to be safe for the future. I'd hate to buy a Wifi and a month later
realize that I really need 3G. It could be nice when traveling instead
of surfing on the small iPhone screen or bringing a separate laptop.

I don't really need a 3G subscription from the beginning, it would be
enough to just know that I can add it later if needed.

It requires scanning with the LastFM scanning module in Custom Scan and
I think it requires Custom Browse to access the cached image files.

After that you can use URL's like:
http://x.x.x.x:9000/plugins/CustomBrowse/custombrowse_imagecachefile.png?type=artist§ion=artists&artist=446

If we really want this I think it would be pretty easy to implement a
solution that didn't require scanning, I just implemented it in Custom
Scan because I needed other information (tags and similar artists) from
LastFM which I had to store locally to make it possible to use in Custom
Browse and SQL Playlist.

By the way, similar artists would be nice in iPeng iPad too.

I would want Karaoke tags in the Lyrics, too, btw :)

Well, probably more reasons for a plugin...
If I could just get an artwork for an artist from the server, that
would already be nice... if it's not there, I just display some generic
stuff...

They do not.

There isn't enough RAM, CPU or flash in the SB2/3/Classic/Receiver/Boom
type players to do that. They're "slim" devices, meaning almost all
their functionality is at the server.

The Radio, Touch and SBController can run 'Applets', small programs
written in Lua.

Are there? The airport express does not have anything close to the
sound quality of a SB.

The SB Touch has a USB port you can plug a USB hard drive into, so
there is no dependence on another PC, and it can serve music to
SB2/3/Boom/Radio/Receiver/Touch...

I don't know why you would want a laptop for your music server: your
laptop has to then be on (and not sleeping!) to listen to music. A
desktop or 'micro' type server (see Vortex Box or Sheeva Plug) works
much better.

I have yet to see a PC-centric system that does anything at all like
the SB does. I have several players around the house, one at work, all
connected to the same library, sometimes playing in sync, sometimes
not.

>From any, I can use either builtin controls (like the Boom, Radio or
Touch have) or an IR remote or a PC, or a SB Controller to choose music,
adjust volume, etc.

The obvious reasons are:
- It's often cheaper to get one device than getting two
- For the manufacturer it might be cheaper to be able to share some
hardware and software which are the same for both audio and video.
Remember that a video device needs to do be able to do audio anyway so
why not also allow audio without video.

However, the issue is that the Squeezebox isn't a video device, it's a
audio device. In this situation the advantage of adding video isn't as
obvious, it is a lot easier for a video device to add audio support.

I can see one use case scenario where video would be interesting:
- Music videos

Ok, now I understand! :-)

You tried the long click on a favorite.

Please try it on the album/artist/track browse.
I.e. open the main menu, select e.g. "albums" and try the long click
there (on an album or a track)...

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-01-29 Thread MelonMonkey

Implementation of a feature isn't illegal unless you're thinking about
ripping off copyright holders. There are plenty of companies out there
ready to license data. Cost is and will always be the main factor.

Logitech has plenty of contacts and money to work on some additional
licensing deals.

That said, it's easy enough to get lyrics into your tags ahead of time.
But yes, I can see the appeal to fetching them and artwork on-demand,
since after all this is a connected device.

ITunes sucks for many reasons. Its UI, when browsing local music, is
not one of those. There is no music management app for any platform
with as much functionality nor as usable a UI. I don't necessarily
think it's the right UI for a media pad, nor does it make the best
playback UI.

Whatever gets implemented, just make sure that there is a way to have
the screen filled completely with an album art grid. In other words, if
there's a split pane showing Now Playing make it able to be turned
off/on. Also make sure there's a Now Playing that focuses solely on
what's now playing and possibly some info of what's coming next, but not
the previous grid navigation. In other words, this doesn't need to be a
rehash of the web interface. Because one can already hit the web
interface if that's what they want. :)

I'd have no problems paying $20 for a new version of iPeng if it
supported playback on top of all this. And I suspect thousands of other
people feel the same way. Imagine how many people are out there,
currently without Squeezebox hardware that might be interested in being
able to use iPeng as a player along with a server installation? No one
is going to convince the mass-market that the audio quality out of the
iPod or iPad isn't good enough. Most listeners here don't have the rest
of the equipment to ever notice a difference either.

I've already got 2 classic SB3 and a radio on the way, and I can still
appreciate and desire iPeng with playback support for use on either
iPhone/iPod or iPad.

I'm not sure about playback on iPad. It's very useful as a Squeezebox
replacement when you have it in the docking station but is it really
going to be that useful when the iPad isn't in the dock ?

The iPhone or iPod Touch is completely different because you can keep
them in the pocket with headphones. I'm imagining that I'll want to use
some other application on the iPad if I don't have it in the dock and as
I've understood it, everyone assumes it won't support background
applications.

Re: [slim] Hardware store any 'Plugin' settings? (more Web control?)

2010-01-29 Thread sydsfloyd67

Hi Snarly. Thanks for your reply.

Well, isn't 'too small' (Slim) relative? For example, how much flash
storage does it take to make the screensaver change settings every 5
minutes? To maintain a reasonable list of URLs?

Is it that there isn't the necessary (SB3) storage, or that it's not
accessible by Plugin architecture? Are there any custom firmwares
about?

__

Unfortunately, I'm finding the SB to be a "PC-centric" system, given
the Settings dependence on Squeezebox Server software Plugins, given the
primitive level of the alternative at mysqueezebox.com.

I appreciate your point in terms of a Desktop vs Laptop Server option.
However I'd favor the central concept of a customizable independent
'radio-like' device that interacts directly on the web (neither Desktop
nor Laptop dependent). Why can't a S'box connect to a website other than
mysqueezebox.com, or how would you enable that? (I imagine more than one
alternative site, with different focus or resources --I'd think that
might 'inspire' Logitech to get something more than bare bones up since
September (e.g. no RSS config, no mobile interface Remote page, etc.). I
can already manage and play MP3 and playlists more readily on a
remote-controlled CPUs on which they reside if I'll need to configure
and run any local SB Server. Having the current SN/MSB + Internet Radio
may be enough, but it's nowhere near what it could be (e.g.
"my"squeezebox.com).

(PS. The audio output (analog) of the Airport Express measures very by
real criteria actually, including that by the snobs at Stereophile
magazine. AE also outputs digital if you want to go beyond that for some
reason.)

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2010-01-29 Thread Muele

After a bit of playing around I must say: Wauw.
It's really come a long way. This may actually compete with the
Logitech controller, I think. At the previous versions I didn't think it
would be this good.
Especially the interaction at the now-playing screen is good. The old
flipping was cool but now its way better. An what you've put "behind"
the flip is very usable.

I did find some things that could be improved.

The change player interface is a bit confusing. I didn't really figure
out to e.g. sync players yet.

And as mentioned earlier I miss the lefthand interface. Especially the
back-swipe feels wrong when the motion is going away from the hand if
you know what I mean. Ofcourse you can get accustomed to it.

Loading lists with a lot of tracks take quite a while. Quite annoying
if you check the lyrics of one track and go back to the list. It doesn't
seem to load on the same place as it was left btw.

Doubleclick? I think that is a mistake, it must be posible to navigate
on a touchscreen without having to click twice.

I think there were a few other things, but i can't remember right now.

These are all minor stuff and purely meant constructively. As mentioned
before it's really good.

More than it has free. The ip3k based players (SBR, SB2/3/Classic,
Boom) have no free storage, they don't even know they are displaying a
screensaver at all. They just display whatever the server tells them,
they just know it is a bunch of lit pixels.

The formatting is done by the server.

There is no free storage. There is no custom firmware on the ip3k
based players.

If you're talking about Radio/Touch that's another matter entirely.

Define 'pc'. The Touch is NOT a PC, yet it can be a server. A sheeva
plug is not a PC either, yet can be a server.

The Squeezebox can connect to servers other than 'mysb.com'. A local
server (SBS) is one. A remote SBS is another. I am at work and playing
music from my home server right now, so I -am- connected to a remote
server.

Why is there no alternative to MySB: because no one has made one. MySB
is really SBS with some proprietary extensions to handle multiple users
and some proprietary plugins for some services that would rather not
hand out their API to anyone who wants it.

You didn't ask for "I would like to be able to change display formats
on MySB.com", you asked for plugins that could run on ip3k based
players. That isn't going to happen.

You can have applets that run on the Radio/Boom/Controller, but that's
another matter entirely.

If you have local music, you will need something to serve it, right?

So what's the big deal to have that 'something' also control what you
asked for via formatting?

You original question:

>

>

The SB3 can NOT store anything other than firmware locally. Plugins
for the SB3 run on the server, whether it is local or mysqueeezebox.com.
They do NOT run on the SB3. They will not: the SB3 does not have
sufficient flash memory to run them. It uses a strange processor (ip3k)
that requires expensive tools and knowledge to program. It will not run
Perl or Lua.

There is no reason for a plugin that runs on a server to store
information on the SB3 anyway: the server would have far more storage
available than what is available in the SB3 flash.

It sounds like what you actually want is "a way to customize the
display of items served by MySB.com such as Napster/Last.fm/etc".

OK, got it. It sounds like there's a proprietary/design issue as well.
Thanks for the thorough explanation.

Well, it's unfortunate that the SB3 cannot/will never be able to load
(or even save) a custom configuration however small without connecting
to a server. I'm not sure whether or not it would be feasible for a user
community to establish some alternative web hosting sites that would
allow at least some (or even a great deal of) user customization beyond
the mysqueezebox.com's 'Favorites' menu and handful of app
installations. If so, I'd think it would have happened already, given
the problems reported here with the SN->MSB. Perhaps it wasn't
previously clear that 'mysqueezebox.com' would not develop more quickly
(for example in what has been done with Plugins with SS).

Does the Touch then perhaps have the hardware needed to first allow and
then and save configurations between restarts (say a URL list of 12
favorites, and a display tweek or 2 beyond firmware)? Thereby
eliminating the need for additional Server connections at every start
after an initial setup? If so, too bad they somehow lost the supply of
displays for a 'Classic II'.

There is nothing stoping you from doing that.

Again, the only special thing about MySB is that it's in the menu.

I don't see a motivation for that, though. Those who have the
experience to set up a multiuser SB Server have their own servers: why
would they pay the costs of a server for other people? Then they would
also have to sign content deals with Napster, Rhapsody, Pandora, etc..

That's a whole lot of work, and I don't really see an income stream
there to make it worth the trouble. It's not a big deal for logitech
who already have a toehold ("Hi, we have contracts with your
competition, do you want to have us use you as a content provider,
too?"), but would be very painful for a startup.

The Touch runs a 'tiny' version of SBS if you add storage to it. (A
USB thumb drive would suffice.)

So, yes, it can connect to net radio stations without an -additional-
server. It would be wrong to say without a server: since it is running
a server.

The SBS has a far faster CPU, more RAM and more flash, as well as a USB
connection for external storage (ie, if you don't want to use a PC as a
server, go get a huge USB hard drive and store your music on that, and
plug it into the Touch).

A 'classic II' would, in order to accomplish what you want, need: more
memory, faster CPU, more flash, USB connection...

Ie, it would be a touch with a VFD display. But I bet the touch-lcd
display is -cheaper- than the VFD was (economies of scale: LCD displays
are cheap, even as touch screens -- think of the millions of phones made
every year). So, really, it would, well, be a Touch.

The touch -is- the next step in the SB1/2/3 line.

Re: [slim] Hardware store any 'Plugin' settings? (more Web control?)

2010-01-29 Thread sydsfloyd67

S.,

I thought so (we're unlikely to see some community hosting.)

A Touch sounds like the solution to user-customization-without-CPU.

But so far I'd rather 'take the hit' with limited MSB.com
configuration or booting a nearby PCR just to enjoy the VFD display and
tactile response of the Classic. (I have plenty of LCD screens and
corresponding interfaces.)

Thanks for the insights.

2010-01-29 Thread mbonsack

1. A way to specify an alternate path for both ripping and music
directory for SBS. Right now it's hard-coded to /storage/music.

1a. A way to tell the ripper to use a character set that is supported
by the mounted target filesystem -- i.e. no accents like those on the
last "e" in Andre, etc. Moving Vortex-ripped music directories to a
FAT32 directory proves to be a challenge now.

It's not possible in the favorites, because the servers does not give
us the necessary infos. :-(

But I've just implemented the download feature for the current
playlist. With the next version, 0.9.3.4, you will have an additional
context menu entry ("download") for the songs in the current
playlist... :-)

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-01-29 Thread linvale

Following this for 24 hrs and seeing the number of good ideas is very
exciting. Reading the dialog between Pippin and Erland and thinking of
the possibilities if these two combined forces (with the significant
improvements that seem to be promised with v7.5 / 8.0 )to produce the
plugin/app that delivered on just some of these features makes me
wonder what Logitechs next product after the Touch might be. Clearly
there are a lot of fans of iPeng who love the idea of a bigger, better
interface and the concept of a great media player front end for the best
digital audio players so far produced. This would catapult Logitech
ahead of any other players out there IMHO. Sign me up.

If you have Squeezecenter Server running on a desktop computer, you
find that using another computer to connect to that desktop computer and
controlling the SB via the web UI to be very slow?

I was really interested in the iPad as soon as I saw the announcement,
and I immediately thought of controlling my SB via this scenario.

I confess, I have zero experience with the iPhone, so I've never used
the iPeng. But I'm afraid I don't understand why the web ui would be
slow...

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-01-29 Thread gharris999

pippin;511265 Wrote:
> Over.my.dead.body!
As a long time iPeng user and fan, I agree. The iThangs (phone, touch,
pad) will do many things differently than the SBTouch. Why hobble the
UI?

Stuff I would like to see:

Currently, in the SBS webUI, URLs in COMMENTs are automatically parsed
and rendered into links. It would be nice if iPeng could do this too
and allow Safari to open the link. This ability goes way back to the
6.0 days, I believe.

E.g:

Code:

REM COMMENT "Bauer, Marion Eugénie (b Walla Walla, WA, 15 Aug 1882; d South
Hadley, MA, 9 Aug 1955). American composer, teacher and writer on music.;
http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/subscriber/article/grove/music/02353?q=Bauer&search=quick&pos=3&_start=1#firsthit;
Orchestral Works; Ambache Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble; "

Also currently in the webUI, if a COMMENT or LYRIC tag contains html,
the webUI renders this correctly and, again, allows the user to click on
and open any links embedded.

E.g.:

Code:

  comment[6]: LYRICS=http://squeezeserver/t_Post%20Modern%20Contemporary/Tenney,%20J/bio.html
target=_blank>
  Tenney, James (Carl)
  (b Silver City, NM, 10 Aug 1934; d Valencia, CA, 24 Aug 2006). American
composer, theorist, educator and performer.

These features were initially broken in the 7.0 'new default' SC skin
when Michael started putting it together. I think it was almost a
one-liner for him to re-enable this. Hopefully, it wouldn't be much
harder for you to put the same functionality into iPeng. But I don't
really have a clue, really, about what sort of a coding effort I'm
asking for here.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-01-29 Thread mweb

Sure. I have speakers upstairs, deck, bathroom, basement, office,...
and at times different music is playing in different areas. My previous
setup (J. Rivers Media Center) allowed me to use the independent outputs
of my sound card to create 4 zones of audio. I want to see if the
squeezecenter stuff can do that before I buy a controller and/or
receiver. Seems odd to me to put 4 squeezebox receivers in my equipment
room stacked on top of each other connected to the amps. I'm beginning
to think that what I want isn't going to work out well. Alternatives?

This reminds me of another thing. It would be great to have links from
Artists/Albums pages to things like LastFM, Wikipedia, allmusic.com,
Amazon.com. The Custom Browse web UI have this kind of links and they
work fairly well by just passing the artist name further to the correct
urls handled by these web providers.

When you click on a link Safari would be shown on half the screen and
the other half can keep showing Now Playing information.

Re: [slim] 3 Artist albums classed as compilations?

2010-01-29 Thread MrSinatra

if you ever have questions about why SBS did this or that after a quick
check of your tags using mp3tag or whatever, what you should do imo is
make sure you have SBS 7.5 or later installed.

then, on the "problem" entries, navigate to them in SBS and drill down
to the song level, and "view tags"

99% of the time the answer will be in the tags, very probably tags you
don't know are there but that SBS can see.

other than the comp=1 tag, or artist mismatch on a given album (without
AA tags), i don't know of a way to get SBS to classify something as part
of a comp.

Re: [slim] 7.4.2 nearing release, need your help!

2010-01-29 Thread usch

I don't have a Radio, but since this is a synchronization issue the
Radio might be affected, too, when it is in a sync group:

My MP3 collection consists of files of all possible sample rates.
Mainly 44.1 kHz, but also 32 kHz, 48 kHz, and even the odd 22.05 kHz. My
normal playback setup is a sync group of 2×SB1 and 1×Boom.

As long as I am streaming to a single player, everything is fine. But
when synchronization is in effect, I experience all kinds of playback
problems whenever a file is encountered that is not 44.1 kHz, such as:

- Both SB1s keep playing, but the Boom is mute while the play time on
the display still counts up.
- Playback stalls altogether (stills says "Now Playing", but is stuck
at 0:00 on all players).
- Title display on the players and in the web interface immediately
skips to the next track in the playlist and stays one track ahead of the
audio that is actually being played until I stop and restart playback.

Let me know if this is a known issue, or if I should file a bug.
