At least it must have a separate flash or ssd for the OS, music on a separate drive and you want to be able to expand it with at least one extra drive ? Dual core atom. It does not have to be such high spec. My NAS runs SBS perfectly well with a 800mhz cpu (no FPU), 128mb memory and no flash memory for the OS. 1GB memory and a single hard drive would be fine. Remember you can miss out the whole graphics side of things which will save money. No need for the OS to be on flash. The idea is it is on 24/7 so if it takes a little while to boot-up so what? Remember this is a single-purpose server. It only needs to be good enough to run SBS which is a very undemanding application. A couple of USB ports on the back could be used to attach other drives if you need to expand capacity. The idea is this should be simple and built to hit the $300 (£200) mark. There are loads of mini barebone PCs with integrated Atom processors for around £140 retail (eg Foxconn). These are usually dual core and include a basic graphics chip and wi-fi into the bargain. Add in a hard drive and a single 1GB stick of memory and you will be around the £200 retail. Logitech should be able to put one together with a linux distro and SBS installed for a lot less than that. Leave out the wi-fi and the graphics and it could be a real money spinner for them! The costs of this kind of device have really come down in the last year. I was thinking dual atom because arm based NAS does not do transcoding . No SOX or flac, alac, lame and similar, problems with streams etc. So a server should be able to transcode at least 2 separate streams to be multipurpose enough . Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)
quote from the original article: but the loudness war has resulted in music squashed to within a few decibels of its life. Yes, and hi-res releases seem to generally be mastered without that. That alone makes them much more listenable. The recent uncompressed hi-res remaster of Band of the Run is a good example. I can definitely hear more detail and a warmer tone on the hi-res. Because of it not being overly compressed there's also a lot of dynamics. It invites you to turn it up and listen loudly, b/c it sounds better that way. Not true of the standard CD. This may all be do to better mastering and a lower noise floor, and not some inherent superiority of the format, but I don't care. I can hear the music better and it's more enjoyable to listen to. So I don't see how I'm being fooled by the hi-res release. I've got some jazz and classical releases that sound wonderful on CD. Can't really say the same for much redbook pop/rock. So the hi-res versions often sound better to me. I have no argument if you want to tell me that standard CD is all I need and can hear IF DONE PROPERLY. But apparently it isn't done properly most of the time. And I have no illusions that the music conglomerates are going to start putting out extremely high quality standard CDs. So the fact that CD's can sound as good as hi-res is irrelevant in practical terms, b/c those CD's don't exist, for the most part. Even the Boston Audio Society paper referred to acknowledges that one trend became obvious very quickly and held up throughout our testing: virtually all of the SACD and DVD-A recordings sounded better than most CDs sometimes much better. So I'll keep buying hi-res. But before you call me silly and a fool, just change the name from hi-res to properly mastered and then we won't have anything to argue about. -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Touch slaved to Empirical Audio Pace Car; MF V DAC3, MF X-150 amp, Devore Gibbon Super 8 Speakers; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. Hi all, I'm a long term SB suppporter. I've had various SB1s, now onto SB3s and Booms. In all that time I've run SqueezeCenter on Linux. We have no radios in the house, no CD players, no tape players. We have a mixture of SB3, one Boom, and one Linux server running SqueezeCenter. We can't afford a Transporter :-( We listen to FLACs and Radio Scotland (thank you, BBC iPlayer Plugin) for around 9 hours per day. Every day. I've had my complaints in the past, and I had my fears when Logitech got involved (I've lost count how many times I've had to return keyboards and mice under warranty). But my current setup is flawless. It works. I can set up a 200 track playlist and know that it will play. I can listen to the radio for 12 hours and it works. Thank you. To all the people involved in SqueezeCentre, the software, the continued support for Linux and Ubuntu, the plugins, people like BPA and Triode, others. Easily the best gadget we have in our house.and we have a LOT of gadgets ;-) Jim PS This didn't mean to sound like an Oscar speech. I'll second Jim's thanks and add that in my home I have four SB3's two SB2's and two SB radios. I recently shifted SBS from my WHS machine to a 17w self-built VortexBox appliance. Our system is controlled by our Android phones via Squeeze Commander, by iPeng on iPod Touches and we do also use the old fashioned SB2/3 IR remotes. I've installed Squeezeboxes into a handfull of friends homes and they are very happy as well. Where there is still work to be done is that the product is quite a bit harder than Sonos for a non-techie to install and enjoy. I believe Logitech recognizes this and hope they are dedicating resources to improve the platform. Personally, I love the ability to customize and do all sorts of cool stuff that is not possible on a Sonos, but the everage user wants to plug it in and have it just work. I hope for the sake of continued success for the product line that Logitech is able to broaden the user base while simultaneously keeping the techie user base satisfied. After some time (few seconds to a few minutes), one or more players stop playing. The display of these units still show as if they are playing. Adjusting volume up/down has no effect: there is no audio output. * occasionally, one of the units doesn't begin playing when I initiate playback Initiating playback from squeezeboxserver or from the devices themselves makes no difference. Driving me mad! What to do? thank you, grimholtz -- grimholtz grimholtz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5235 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86059 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] the SQUEEZEBOX RADIO SHOW (this Saturday night 11pm EST)
They forwarded the problem to a generic customer service support center. The bottom line is it costs MagicJack money so they are not going to do it. I have to call this number 213-325-3434 but when I do, I get a message that it is an international number and I have to purchase that plan. The 213 area code is in LA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_code_213 but for some reason MagicJack considers it an international area code...Algeria perhaps http://www.magicjack.com/international/ Please clear this up this serious matter as many people on the web have had the same problem. What MagicJack didn't say in that email was, as my friend explained to me, the FCC has some regulation where if the user calls these teleconference numbers, MagicJack has to pay a fee (as oppose to when the user calls ordinary numbers, the telephone company has to pay MagicJack). This is why MagicJack is so cheap...they make a profit every time you make a call. But I hate it most when this topic about starting a Squeezebox Radio Show turns into a topic about MagicJack. -- chipmalee chipmalee's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39278 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85686 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There lies the killer app...as long as they don't have to call teleconference numbers. -- chipmalee chipmalee's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39278 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85686 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB release 7.5.3: Unreliable. Anyone else?
Kuben72;615256 Wrote: Has anyone tried to disable any plugins like Dynamic Playlist and SQL Playlist? No, but: My weekend routine for a while has been to use Dynamic Playlists with Never Played Albums all night long. Since 7.5.3, it's common for it to work for a couple albums, then stop. Usually it adds an album, but then either just stops without playing it at all or only plays the last track and gives up. I use a separate instance of SBS for the weekend, so it's definitely not a case of there not actually being any Never Played Albums. -- atrocity atrocity's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16009 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85474 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Screen Font - can it be changed?
Are you talking about the Radio or the Touch ? As far as I know, there isn't any official way to change the menu screen fonts or highlight on any of them. However, if you talk about the Radio, there are a number of patches which can be installed if you install the third party Patch Installer applet, specifically: - Bigger font by Aslak3 which changes the font size - Orange/Yellow/Green/Magenta highlight by iisfaq which changes the selection background highlight -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland).
