Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2011-07-26 Thread bluegaspode

SqueezePad and 7.6

if you upgraded to 7.6 and SqueezePad is crashing all the time, then
please try to set a new playlist on each player via the web-interface.

Seems some bogus data gets send from time to time after the upgrade,
though I haven't been able to reproduce this myself.

Seems to be the same issue, that also makes iPeng crashing right now.
Will investigate and send out an update to Apple, but don't expect
anything earlier than two weeks due to Apples long review times (and me
first needing to reproduce this issue somehow).

Sorry for the inconvenience.

@michael: pippin says the playlist_items now sometimes contains a
'null' item. Maybe worth a fix on the server, as the Logitech App might
be affected as well?

Ok - one more test: upen the web-interface, then change the volume with
SqueezePlayer to its max volume (playing a song not needed).
Is the volume bar in the web-interface going to its max value as well?

If not, please check that SqueezePlayer is configured correctly:
- enter the settings menu (menu button) and check if the port to the
server is correct
- also check if you need to enter username and password when your
server is setup with password protection

If SqueezePlayer cannot send the new volume correctly to the server,
than some time later the server tells SqueezePlayer it's current volume
so any change on the device gets reset.

If this is still not your issue, please write a mail to
support(at)squeezeplayer.com. I'd provide you with a custom version
with some extra logging about what volume events arrive in
SqueezePlayer.

No, I am using Squeeze Commander. As you requested I tried controlling

I tried the regular music player and it was doing the same thing. I

Just to be sure I force closed squeezeplayer and tried the regular

Are you referring to the volume problem? What Controller App are you
using?
Logitechs App? If I remember correctly it had a bug intercepting the
hard keys/volume of the device itself and I'm not sure if that was
fixed already.

As a test could you try to change the volume via the web-interface when
SqueezePlayer is on, but the Logitech App closed, then report back if
the issue is gone.

I don't think so, I think the Bridge is only needed if none of the
other Sonos devices in the network can be connected with a wire. If at
least one of them can be connected with a wire, the Bridge isn't
needed. There is basically a built-in Sonos proprietary wireless
network access point built into all Sonos devices and the one connected
with a wire will act as access point for all the others.

So the purpose of the Bride is just to be able to offer a cheaper
solution for those who aren't interested in wires and don't want to
listen to music in the room where the closest network cable is. In that
case, they will just put a Bridge in that room and it will offer
Internet access to all the Sonos devices in the other rooms.

But I haven't tried it myself, so I might have misunderstood something,
but this is how I've interpreted it when reading on the Sonos forum.

I'd be surprised if the sound quality was different between the two
systems (although I suppose the DACs could be quite different, don't
know). For me the biggest limitations are that Sonos has a track limit
that is much less than my library and it doesn't have the equivalent of
your plugins (dynamic playlists, etc.). Those two things alone are a
deal breaker for me.

As I've understood, one of the Sonos devices have to be connected with
a wire then the rest will communicate wireless using Sonos proprietary
wireless protocol.

So if you have two Play:3 devices and one is connected with wire it
works. If you want both to be wireless, you need their cheaper Bride
device and connect that to the router to make their proprietary
wireless network to work.

I guess the reason at least one needs to be wired is because they can't
talk standard WiFi with the router since they only understand Sonos
proprietary wireless protocol.

Squeezebox uses standard WiFi and due to this all Squeezeboxes can be
wireless. The disadvantage with Squeezebox which uses standard WiFi is
that it's usually a bit more complex to setup unless you know how to
setup a wireless network.

If someone have compared the audio quality from a Squeezebox and Sonos
device it would be very interesting to hear the result. It feels like
sometimes we just assume that Squeezebox sounds better, but is it
really possible to hear any difference in a real world comparison ?

Thanks for the education. I didn't give them enough time. I heard

[slim] SBS v7.5.5 Unable to access Server page using HTTP://127.0.0.1:9000

2011-07-26 Thread thenoo

I have WIN 7 SP1 and until recently I could access the green background
Web page by using the URL "HTTP://127.0.0.1:9000" If I type this URL
into a browser the green background page appears but I just get a
message saying "awaiting htp://127.0.0.1:9000" with the little white
circle spinning round.I have the SBS little icon showing in the browser
tray which states that the Server is running and am able to open the SBS
Control Panel by clicking appropriately on this choice there. Once this
SBS Control Panel is open I can scan my music OK ,

If however , I try to click the "Open Web Control" on this tray icon I
get the message stating that the file "http://127.0.0.1:9000"; does not
have a program associated with it and invites me to create such an
association. I don't know how to do this.

The only significant change I have done to my PC since this happened is
, I think, the installation of WIN 7 SP1.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this ?

My SBS is v.7.5.5

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-26 Thread aubuti

Thanks for the clarification. I asked about the info from the
Information tab basically to be sure about the same point.

You're probably not going to like this answer, but I suggest you either
find a way to get 7.5.x or 7.6 running, or you return the Touch. There's
a good reason why "SBS 7.5 or later" is mentioned on the "System
Requirements" section of the Touch's web page and product box. You may
have somehow managed to get the Touch running on 7.3.3, but I strongly
suspect the unreliable behavior you're getting with the Touch is
exactly because 7.3.3 does not support the Touch (or the Radio, for
that matter). Some Touch features may work with 7.3.3, but then at some
point in the normal use of the Touch it asks SqueezeCenter to do
something that the server doesn't understand, because it's a feature
that is unique to the Touch, and therefore 7.3.3 is unaware of it.

The way I see it, your main options for running 7.5.x or 7.6 are:

1) figure out how to update the SBS on your NAS. I have run 7.6 on a
different LinkStation (Pro v1). It's probably possible to get it
running on yours, but it will probably take a bit of work.

2) Run SBS on a different computer, such as your laptop, a re-purposed
desktop, a small form factor computer, or even a NAS that has better
SBS support, like a Vortexbox. If you like you can still keep the music
library on the NAS.

3) Run TinySBS (the Touch's built-in server) on the Touch. The
downsides are that you would not be able to use it for the Roku, and
you would need to move your music library to a USB drive. On the plus
side, you could still run the Roku off the server on the NAS.

Uh, wait a minute. A couple posts back you said that the -"Server is
only installed on the NAS"-. Now you say the server is installed on
the laptop, too. Which is it?

Were you possibly running SBS on the laptop, and only getting the files
from the NAS (as opposed to connecting to SBS running on the NAS)?

Also, you don't need to get the Touch connected to show what's on the
SBS Settings Information tab. It's there any time the server is
running, even if nothing is connected.

Hi SJ
yes - this is a known problem of either ConnectBot or Android. Only
people using honeycomb claim that connectbot works without flaws in a
Squeezebox environment.
Unfortunately noone wanted to help me on the connectbot groups:
http://groups.google.com/group/connectbot-users/browse_thread/thread/acd1fc6c8964ae63

Anyway, please read my instructions here:
http://www.squeezeplayer.com/2011/05/3g-part-5-secure-your-communication-channel/

I couldn't live without a working secure connection myself, so I wrote
my own little App to create a working SSH tunnel (downloadable on the
above page). Requires a rooted phone unfortunately, as the App installs
the official OpenSSH client and thus isn't affected by Android bugs
anymore.

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-26 Thread onemeg

ok. Now I'm a bit peeved.

I was faffing about trying to get the daylight clock working and
somehow managed to screw up the screen when powered down so that it was
blank rather than showing the clock.

I've done a factory reset and now it's not working again as the Server
software on the laptop isn't showing it as a player!

If I get it going I'll do as you ask.. in the meantime, I definitely
feel like I might have wasted £200!

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-07-26 Thread SlimboJimbo

First:Excellent job, finally squeeze-playback on android, thank you!

I have only stumbled on one problem/bug. I connect over hsdpa/3g using
connectbot, ssh-tunneling the ports 9000 and 3483. It works like a
charm, but it will not play the next song in the playlist. It just
stops at the end of the first song. However if I jump to next song in
Squeeze Commander it will play just fine again until the end of that
song.
When I play over wlan it works as expected, playing the next song in
the playlist.

Is this a known problem?

[slim] Sonos3 features of SS 7.6

2011-07-26 Thread froth

Hello, I was just reviewing some marketing material about the new Sonos
"Play" 3. It appears to have a similiar capability to the Stereo
settings of Squeeze Server 7.6 where you can use two wireless devices
for a Left and Right Stereo channel. What I found interesting was the
price. They have listed 299 for a device and then for 59.00 you can
add the wirless network.

To me this looks like Sonos is trying to enter somewhat into the market
where logitech has been for a while. Now without new boom boxes
available from logitech, this may leave an opening for Sonos to sell
some product.

I know that I might have looked at Sonos a while back if they had
something like this S3 back then as an alternative to the boom.

Re: [slim] Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

2011-07-26 Thread JeffHart

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88915

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

I recommend Squeezeboxes for price / performance and online services.
I've scrobbled over 35K tracks since I stood up my first setup back in
March 2009. That's not completely reflective of usage, since I'm not
scrobbling internet radio - I use the stream URL a fair amount to
listen to Live Music Archive as well a couple radio stations.

Occasional hiccups - once or twice a year - mostly having to reconnect
Duet Receivers that I haven't used for a few months and are in areas of
the house with poor WiFi signal strength. I mostly use 3 Receivers and
the Boom, the other Receivers and the Radio are generally used when
entertaining.

Re: [slim] boom keeps reverting to line in mode during playlists

2011-07-26 Thread toby10

The only thing that comes to mind is if you switch the Boom between SBS
server and MySB.com, each server may have a different setting for Line
In.
I'd check via the web UI for both, make sure it is set to OFF on both.

And again, if you created that MAC address on your own there may be a
conflict with another SB player with the same MAC address on MySB.com.
Dunno, just thinking of possible culprits.

Check the player's screensaver settings in the web interface. If they've
changed, just reset them.

If they change again, it's probably because of broken SBS integration

Does Logitech run any RSS feed that announces release of new

Re: [slim] Is there a Windows application to control a Squeezebox?

2011-07-26 Thread Bert003

I tried Foobar with an UPNP plugin and I use Whitebear server. But the
problem was that browsing was too slow for me. Each time I go into
Artist or Album I had to wait some time until artists or albums showed
up. So I quit with that.

And I used more UPNP programs but they all have the same problem. Too
much waiting time. I still would like to have a fast program which
caches the database like iPeng and Moose do.

In the mean time I use Moose. It works now but I don't like the strange
interface and all the strange functions which I don't understand yet.

I guess a "normal" looking Windows application doesn't exist yet after
all these years, and I doubt there will be one during the time
Squeezeserver will be alive. Although the server works great for me,
controlling the Squeezeboxes the way Logitech has implemented until now
it is a dead end street I think. Although the iPhone App is quite ok,
but not half as good as iPeng.

And for sure there will be many old style users who say that all works
perfect and can't be any better.

However, things have moved on a bit. I finally found this article:

The symptoms described seem to match my daughter's problems. I used my

Given that this is a known issue, I'm a little surprised that Time
Machine doesn't check if the disk uses MBR partition types and issue a

Re: [slim] Is there a Windows application to control a Squeezebox?

2011-07-26 Thread Skye

Hello Bert003, I’m inclined to agree with many of your observations -
interface appearance can be a quite personal reaction, depending on the
type of music you play and how you visualize how your music files are
stored.
You might like to use Foobar2000 to control your Squeezeboxen as
indicated here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79575

As the majority of my files are of classical music, I find that I use
folder organization (composer, work, performers) more intuitive than
the usual hierarchy of the default tagging schemes. Using the ‘folder
structure’ library display in Foobar2000 is brilliant for that, and the
speed of the whole thing quite a relief.

I just wish stuffedspacedog would make it a plugin.

Do you mean you changed the MAC address of the Boom?
Did you setup the Boom with your own MySB.com account? If yes, are you
certain it is connecting to your MySB account?

If you created the MAC and/or your Boom is not connecting to your

problem is that at random times during a playlist, which can be local

track' in order for the playlist to resume. it's been doing this ever

Re: [slim] Wimp app... so stupid...

2011-07-26 Thread OppfinnarJocke

I'm not using SBS, only MySB, and my language setting is Sweden. And
I've paid :)

Ah! This is it! Looking closely it says (in Swedish) that the record
company forbids streaming of these tracks...

OK... so the app is maybe not stupid, but why the h-k should tracks
that cannot be played be listed... they should be grayed out or
something and not clickable if they should at all turn up.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] OT: Time Machine & USB disks

2011-07-26 Thread chill

Clive

This is probably obvious, but worth mentioning. It sounds as though
this disk is used for occasional backups (plug it in, do a backup,
disconnect it), rather than as a permanently connected backup drive.
Keep in mind though that Time Machine likes to run frequent incremental
backups, so if your daughter completes a backup and then leaves the
drive connected, an hour later TM will start another (albeit small)
backup. One possibility is that unplugging the drive during a backup
might be causing problems. Make sure your daughter checks the little
TM icon in the menu bar before disconnecting the drive - if the arrow
is going round she should either wait for the backup to finish or
cancel it before unplugging. Also make sure that she 'ejects' the
drive before physically unplugging it.

I'd also echo the advice to use Disk Utility to format the drive as
'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' - I don't profess to know all the
details, but it seems likely that the OS will handle problems on the
drive better if it's a native format.
