that's why I don't want to depend on a third party server system.

What I mean is that I am hessitant to invest further in whole house
audio when I have a nagging felling that the product-line will stop
being sold at some point in the near future and thus force me to
change to Sonos or whatever for further expansion. I don't really care
for mysb.com. I try to avoid it, though I suspect radio-channel-lists
are maintained via mysb.com.

Actually there is nothing keeping me from buying more squeezeboxes
except that we don't really need more (or at least need other stuff
more than stocking up the last couple of rooms.)

I have two Squeezebox Radios and an SB3, running off a QNAP NAS box
running the server 24/7. All perform flawlessly (issues I've had
mostly relate to the BBC's radio streams and appear to be nothing to do
with the server software or hardware). Frankly, the only thing that
would really make me buy another SB would be if one of those three
devices conked out.

For a replacement for the SB3, I would not be looking for a touch
screen or a fancy display, as I don't want or need that for the HiFi.
I use SqueezePad on the iPad to control the music.

I recently bought some receivers to replace SB2's and have better synch
with Touch and SB3's, so if Logitech brought out a completely new
generation I might be persuaded but to be honest I'm out of rooms now
and the later stuff just doesn't match the reliability of the earlier
SB3's. It seems to me that what the audio market wants is SB3's or
receiver/ipeng combination. I wasted another hour last night trying to
get a Duet controller to connect to the server (others were fine).

On that point (and you don't list this option)I am fairly sure that if
they brought out a model with an integrated CD player for backup when
the rest doesn't work, my wife would be first in line..

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-08 Thread xio

Have been around since SLiMP3 days, currently running that, an SBG
(don't hear so much about them!), SB2, 2 SB3's, a Boom, 2 radios a
controller. Have always tried to keep things simple, and where
possible, wired (have cabled my house). Only ever had 2 problems, one
with the SuperDateTime plugin, which is brilliant when it works, but
unfortunately seems to need to be updated quite often to keep in step
with server releases and changing weather feeds (neither the fault of
the developer, but annoying nonetheless), and several issues always
related to new releases, which probably add features I'm not going to
use anyway. My painful lesson is to not bother updating without a good
reason as I get grief from the family when it doesn't 'just work' as
they're so used to it. Having been an early adopter and gone down the
flac route, am now re-coded to apple lossless iTunes - I know the
quality of iTunes new purchases isn't as good, but the convenience of
being able to download music on any machine in the house and have it
available to the squeezeboxes in a very short time just works for us.
As always, keeping things simple is best.

Re: [slim] The 7.6.x lingering issues thread

2011-08-08 Thread Zten

SW is never perfect, its constantly needing improvement. However, I
would agree. 7.6.0 was not ready -- not even close. Like so many
organizations, it seems the squeezebox development community is
scattered around the globe. Still, it all has to come together and go
through some kind of rigorous testing before release. Does that happen?
It seems these gross library scanning issues would be caught by an even
very modest amount of validation testing.

So what is going to be done differently before the next release is
deemed ready?

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-08 Thread vrette

The price we pay for all of this wonderful technological innovation is
it is complicated, and sometimes doesn't work as it should. Who ever
thought 20 years ago that future media players, receivers, or TVs would
crash and need to be rebooted/and or reset?

I started with a Slim Devices SB3, but moved on to an Olive 4 due to
the WOW factor. After 2+ years I got fed up with Olive's closed system,
the software/GUI not working correctly, and the lack of some features on
the Olive that we take for granted on the Squeezebox (for example, there
is no way to generate any kind of smart or dynamic playlist with the
Olive, and playlist creation is a real PITA). I considered going the
UPNP/DLNA route, but I could never get that to work with my current
supposedly UPNP/DLNA compatible components to my satisfaction. I also
considered Sonos, but after reading some Sonus forums, I realized that
the Sonos product wasn't perfect either. I decided to go back to
Squeezebox since I was at least familiar with it.

The other thing about Sonos that wouldn't work for me is my wife would
not be willing to control streaming radio stations via an iPhone,
tablet, etc. She wants conventional physical radio controls on the
player, which as far as I can tell, Sonos does not offer.

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-08 Thread mlsstl

I took a quick look at the Sonos general discussion forum a few minutes
ago. Here are some of the subject lines I saw:

Dropout problems
Upgrade disaster
Playlist troubles
High-pitched squeal
Android app problem
Alarm problem
Grrr

Sound familiar? And that was just from a surface skim of one forum
section out of 12.

The point wasn't to beat-up on Sonus or declare Squeezebox superior.
ANY technical product is going to have a certain percentage of their
buyers suffer difficulties.

The issues I've had with my Squeezeboxes over the years have been
minimal compared to some of the other computer hassles I've faced.
Unfortunately, technical problems are just part of the landscape in the
world of computers.

That said, I love the way my Touch allows me to access my music
collection. You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming back to the
world of only having a CD player, turntable or tape deck as a source.

If you are using hotmail or similar you might have to make sure to

If you still don't get it to work, send a PM or mail to

suspect it's just that it's caught by some anti spam software on the

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-08 Thread Ron Thigpen
I've had a lot more success than Cipro with my SB's. I have 2 SB2s, a
Boom and a Radio. I keep them sync'd up most of the time, with the Boom
and Radio playing together most of the day every day. I listen to a mix
of my own library (~100k tracks mixed MP3 and FLAC files) and internet
radio streams. I run my own SS. I have a pretty fast and reliable
internet connection, and use a combination of wired, wi-fi and powerline
connections to the various SB's. I use iPend on my iPhone and iPad. I
don't try to use my Radio as an alarm clock.

And everything is pretty darn reliable.

There have been various sync issues over the years, and the server has
gone through some up and down stages of quality, but in general we use
our SBs an awful lot and they generally just work.

We love our SB system.

I would like to see some updated players (modernized Boom, faster
hardware for Touch and a new SB4) as well as some new features (MOG!!),
and I think I might over the next year. But even if Logitech
disappeared tomorrow, I think I'd get at least a few more years of happy
usage out of my system.

Something better will come along someday, but for now the SBs are still
a very good solution for me.

Hi Thomas,

Create the file /etc/default/squeezeslave and add a line with a unique
mac address and another with the server hostname or ip address.
Ideally you need to get the mac address of the hardware your running
squeezeslave on and use that in place of the random mac I placed here
as an example.

# cat /etc/default/squeezeslave
SSMAC=00:10:99:98:97:09
SBSHOST=sbs01

The /etc/init.d/squeezeslave startup script uses these SSMAC and
SBSHOST values if they are set, otherwise the defaults set in the init
script
SSMAC=00:00:00:00:00:01
SBSHOST=localhost
are used.

Re: [slim] Logfile in 7.6

2011-08-08 Thread mr_hyde

Hey, I have found the problem.

The current SSOTS scripts modify slimserver.pl and scanner.pl by adding
a -w flag to the interpreter settings. This causes all the warnings in
the logfile.

Code:

  #!/opt/ssods4/bin/perl -w

Not sure why this had no negative effect in SbS 7.6.

The startup script will be modified. See here:

Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's great to hear you think
MonkeySqueeze is really cool.

Yes I'm looking to improve the install and have been thinking of
bundling all required software in one package. The next revision is
just around the corner so will attempt to do as you suggest.

Regarding the the sync issue, did music on MediaMonkey play on
Squeezebox Server straight away without problems? Did you then have to
select a play device or did music play on SqueezePlay automatically?
I'm away on business at the moment so I can't replicate your issue but
will look into it when I return in the next day or so.

Thanks again for the feedback, lots of people have downloaded
MonkeySqueeze but we don't know their opinion of the addon. Hopefully
more people will respond, which then gives us a chance to improve the
package.

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-08 Thread InTheBath

Thank goodness for a post slightly down on SB that hasn't descended into
slanging.
I am playing poker and drinking Talisker, so I apologise now if any of
the following is disjointed etc.

I think it is fairly well documented [citation needed] that VHS won
when the porn industry started releasing very little on Betamax format.
Perhaps a salutory lesson for Logitech - they keep trying to get in bed
with Napster and Spotify. They need to be trying to get in bed with
Cathy Barry (you can Google her - I went to school with her).

I struggled with a Netgear MP101 and enjoyed the results. I've
struggled with my Logitech stuff but again enjoyed the results. I think
there's a lot of stuff released now that falls well short of being ready
for release. If my Mum bought a washing machine and found that it didn't
complete a couple of the cycles occasionally until it had it's firmware
updated, she'd be bamboozled. Yet that's exactly what happened when she
went into a high street shop and laid down her cash for a new video
recorder (she walked out with a PVR). Some people and some products
expect plug and play. I doubt there's anything that really realises
this dream for music streaming (Philips Streamium looked good to me -
whatever happened to them?). I've always plugged in a TV and it's
worked, same for a CD player and same for an amp. And I've never bought
a cassette deck that, after setting up, I needed to consult the internet
to get it working properly (in fact, for most of these products, I never
had to look at the instruction manual). At the moment, streaming music
through the house demands know how and if you can't be bothered then
you return your purchase to the store.

Have just read the post that states the Duet was a pup. For me it's the
best fit of the SB products. I want a good controller (and the SB
Controller always has that quality factor with anybody who picks it up)
and the audio nuggets can go off and hide in a corner. My audio
equipment is not on a nice rack in full display. It's hidden away from
sight to stop my front room looking like a branch of Currys. I have one
receiver in the kitchen hidden in the coping of a kitchen cabinet, the
receivers are that slender. Lovely. When receivers are cheap on ebay,
I'll be bidding on a few.

In summary, the best product doesn't always win the day. And don't
always go for your AJ, even when they're suited.

Goodnight from Bath.

* I know networking well enough to want my music system to utilize my

Sonos supports wired networking), or my existing 802.11 network which I

* I learned that SBS was open source (and that the Controller even got

So I'm not the average user, but then again, who is? (That is a

Re: [slim] Performance of SQLite and large databases

2011-08-08 Thread erland

I've done some test on my Ubuntu box and compared SQLite with MySQL and
my results are a bit different than JJZolx.

I've cleared the file system cache before each test and I've executed
each test case twice to ensure I get the same performance. All the
tests started with an empty Cache directory and I started to server and
let it do a full rescan. The tests has been run in a virtual environment
but since I executed them twice I feel that they are repeatable and due
to this should be fairly accurate.

The library I used was the generated 5 track test library I've
posted about earlier in the beta forum. It contains very small FLAC
files which tags has been generated from a discogs database dump. All
music files were stored on a local drive. Statistics from library is:

Total Tracks: 49,808
Total Albums: 4,313
Total Artists: 7,495
Total Genres: 13

The tests were executed on 7.6.1 r33004 (which contains a new SQLite
version but still haven't incorporated the latest WAL related changes
Andy has done)

Anyway, the results are as follows (Discovering files + Scanning new
files):

MYSQL (HIGH DATABASE MEMORY SETTING)
* Discovering files: 00:00:33
* Scanning new files: 00:34:26

MYSQL (NORMAL DATABASE MEMORY SETTING)
* Discovering files: 00:00:34
* Scanning new files: 02:23:09

SQLITE (HIGH DATABASE MEMORY SETTING)
* Discovering files: 00:00:30
* Scanning new files: 00:10:51

SQLITE (NORMAL DATABASE MEMORY SETTING)
* Discovering files: 00:00:30
* Scanning new files: 00:16:28

As you can see, my results are very different from the similar results
JJZolx saw with 65 000 tracks. In all my tests SQLite is a lot faster
than MySQL which is completely opposite to what JJZolx got earlier in
his tests on Windows.

Another thing that's clear is that the Database Memory Config in SBS
Settings/Advanced/Performance makes a big difference, especially on
MySQL.

A quick analysis indicates that the difference could be:
- Linux vs Windows
- SQLite version (I think I used a newer version than JJZolx)
- MySQL version (I used the same as in 7.5, not sure what JJZolx uses)
- Tagging difference (my library is tagged differently than JJZolx)
- FLAC size difference (my FLAC files are a bit smaller than JJZolx)

I plan to run a few more tests to compare with different library sizes
to see if I see the same issues where it slows down with a larger
library as JJZolx saw in his tests. Will get back to more information
about this as soon as I've executed the tests.

Also, the artwork precaching phase does work in my Linux setup with
MySQL in the above tests but I didn't include it in these test results
as I wanted the results too be comparable with those made by JJZolx.
The time of the pre-caching phase seems to vary a lot between different
test runs, not sure exactly why, but it varies between 2-6 minutes in
time in my tests with exactly same configuration, the variation happens
both with SQLite and MySQL so it doesn't seem to be database engine
related.

No, I did not test with a 65,000 track library. The library had 260,000
tracks. The results I posted above showed the elapsed time at different
points in the scan.

I see results similar to yours when the library is small.

As mentioned previously in the thread, if it stalls on a specific file,
make sure to register a bug report and attach that file to the bug.

You can enable more logging by going to SBS Settings/Advanced/Logging
and changing one or several of the following log points to debug:
 - scan
 - artwork
 - scan.import
 - scan.scanner

Even with the debug set, the artwork file seems not to be the issue:
scanner.exe just takes off, stops reading the library, and must be
cancelled from the Windows Task Manager. Abort scan returns to the
settings/advanced/information screen with done but the time for
pre-caching continues to increment and there is nothing in the webui
database at all. Again, the scanner.exe has to be killed from the task
manager.

are no settings there?

Please see the screenshot on both the Web interface and within the

It reports the fact that it has found a file obviously as error. Is

With SrvrPowerCtrl, you can string together multiple CLI commands by
separating them with . So, for your purposes, the custom command
would be something like:

Code:

You could also use Jason Holtzapple's PowerSave plugin. It will turn

Trying to get an confirmation mail ? failed for me , have had my wiki
acount for 6 months never been able to edit or get the confirmation
 mail ?

Subscription must be working: From the amount of spam we see, there must be at
least one or two new users every week... As Erland said: most likely an issue
with some spamfilter somewhere.

Feel free to send me your account details to michael ät slimdevices dott com.
Not sure I can do much myself, but we'll see.
