Great project! I ordered the components right after I read this post
(PogoPlug and USB DAC) and finished the installation when the DAC
arrived today.

VAMP showed up immediately as a player on LMS and iPeng, and it works
the same as any headless Squeezebox.

Perhaps I should sell my Duet...

I see that the box is running Apache, and I was able to view an audio
device status page in my browser. Do you plan to add web control of any
of the functions?

I've been a Squeezebox fan since I bought my first SB1, and I used the
Slimserver interface for years before I ever looked at iTunes. When I
bought an iPhone a couple of years ago and started trying to use iTunes
to manage music for it, I couldn't understand why the interface was so
useless, and I still don't.

Why would I *always* want to play an entire album if I selected just one
track? And really, why would I *always" want to play the same songs in
the same sequence from a static playlist? I see lots of iTunes users
have asked similar questions, year after year, with no answers.

Our beloved founders got music management exactly right.

If you're talking about this service:

then all of the programs there are the closest you'll get to Radio 4 -
these NPR programs are pretty well the only generally available shows on

The latest MP3 stream, according to the WNYC website, is:

Re: [slim] quadrophonic vinyl - ripping and playing?

2011-07-03 Thread Bill Burns
Most quadraphonic and surround sound recordings use just two channels;
the decoding into multiple channels is done by the audio hardware you
play them through.

Unless the LP is CD-4 or Quadradisc, which used a high-frequency carrier
wave to drive a special decoder, rip the quadrophonic LP just like any
stereo record, and see how it sounds with whatever surround sound
options you have on your audio system.

Yet substituting a long patch cable shows that something is wrong in the
walls...would those runs go close to any electrical equipment that could
be inducing noise into the CAT-5?

I'd be inclined to get hold of another tester and check them that way.

Is the BD player a 10Mbps device, perhaps? If your CAT-5 wiring in the
wall is flaky a slow device will still usually work, but the 100Mbps
Transporter would have a problem.

The most common wiring error is to run all the pairs in sequence across
the ethernet jack pins, instead of swapping the specified wires between
pairs. Here's the wiring spec:

http://www.dragon-it.co.uk/files/cat5_colour_codes.htm

At one of my computer clients I replaced a 10Mbs switch with a 100Mbps
switch, and one of the PCs then wouldn't connect. It worked fine with a
long patch cable so I suspected the wiring, and when I checked I found
that run had been wired incorrectly.

Even if the BD player is 100Mbps and works OK, I would still check the
wiring, as each device may respond differently to incorrect wiring
conditions.

I buy from Monoprice regularly. Their Cat 5 cable prices are far lower

That's what I was thinking. With most routers you can just enter the
router IP for the DNS address on the PC, and the router will do the DNS

I just plugged my server (music and mail) into a Kill A Watt power
monitor, and it's running at a fairly steady 115 watts power
consumption. That's without the monitor, which I usually keep turned
off. That PC is a few years old, with an AMD K4 CPU, 2 gigs of RAM, and
a couple of hard drives.

I'd be interested to compare the power consumption of a typical NAS.

I too have an SB in my bedroom and would also find it annoying to be

I second that - Gmail works well in exactly the way you describe that
you want to use it; leave it open in a browser, and it quietly
refreshes itself every minute or two, making it easy to see unread
messages at any point. Works just as well for multiple forums (slim,
slim-beta, etc) via filters/labels. Plus, you get your signal/noise
ratio back in the black :)

And you can set it to keep emails there and forward them too. You can
also use it as a POP server if you want to read emails in your regular

it's a pretty big room) and it's even bright enough to read the words
on the remote - I was trying to find the BRIGHTNESS button. ;-)

For the SB1, the remote is the perfect size, when balanced on edge in
front of the display, to completely hide it.

You'll need a higher-tech solution for the SB2/3.

Actually you're right I just checked our supply and it runs 5.25 with no

Realize I'm erring on the side of caution here - we spent a great deal
of time testing our own power supply but I have no idea how any other
particular one is going to perform - I'm just suggesting what *might*
go wrong.

If you want to be safe open up the sb3 and check the voltage at the
input when it's connected.

Good advice, and I understand your need for caution, but what's the
manufacturer's voltage tolerance in the specs for the display? Do they
assume it will always be run on a tightly-regulated supply, or is there
some room for normal voltage variations?

It'll work at 5.2V but I would not recommend running it like that for an
extended time. Although SB3 does have over-voltage protection it won't
kick in until 5.5 or so.

The thing is the internal VFD supply depends on the 5V supply being
accurate in order to generate its filament voltage. If the filament
voltage is too high you may decrease lifetime/brightness of the display
- I can't say for sure what to expect.

Anyway I would not have much confidence in a 5V supply which is off by
such a margin.

That's really only 4% off. And unloaded too. Hard to say just how bad
it is without loading it.

I just measured the no-load voltage on the power supply for my SB1 at
5.3 V. That seems well within tolerance for a low-cost supply. Is the
SB2/3 power supply really so much better?

The 6.5 versions are considered experimental. In particlar, xPL is being
reworked. Please use 6.2.1 instead.

No problem, I'll just wait for the xPL support to appear in 6.5.

Hex keypad!!! We used to *dream* of having a hex keypad and

My Altair (still in the attic) had toggle switches and LEDs; if you

nothing else running on the server.

[0.109] Artists: 503
[0.000] Albums : 818
[0.000] Songs : 7068
[0.000] Genres : 93
[47.063] titles 0 10
[12.500] titles 0 100
[21.453] titles 0 1000
[58.562] titles 0 1

Second pass:

[9.875] titles 0 10
[10.609] titles 0 100
[27.500] titles 0 1000
[55.391] titles 0 1

Is there some sort of trick to this? I got it all working without too
much trouble (WPA) and the wireless squeezebox was sounding and looking
great.

Then, my daughter turned on her computer, and complained that she
couldn't connect to the internet. After a little investigation, I
notice that 192.168.1.1 (which should be my WIRED lan's router IP
address) was now showing up with the name of the wifi router.

Change the LAN IP address of the wireless router to 192.168.1.2 and turn
off its DHCP server.

Having been a (very) early (and happy) adopter of the AlienBBC plugin

Do you want to know about channels that don't work? For example, I get
