[slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.3.4 approved for sale

2010-03-15 Thread Luke Redpath

I'm happy to announce that Squeemote 1.3.4 has been approved for sale
and should be available on the App Store shortly. This release contains
numerous fixes and improvements.

Here is the change log:

* In response to user feedback, Squeemote has an updated control
mechanism; single-tap now plays automatically whilst tap-and-hold
presents a contextual menu.
* Improved support for large libraries; Squeemote now downloads album
lists in smaller incremental chunks.
* Improved artwork handling; artwork is no longer downloaded whilst the
album list is scrolling due to its impact on performance but there is
now an option to pre-cache artwork (disabled by default). Scrolling
performance in the album view is improved in general.
* Improved caching strategy with the ability to refresh individual
lists (including shake to refresh).
* Better notification of download progress when fetching large
libraries (animated progress view).
* Dramatically improved music service support, including Napster,
Rhapsody and Pandora. Tested with all of the major music services but
should work with all. Better handling of display of music service items
including information such as artist bios.
* New Music screen moved into its own tab and now honours the server
"new music limit" setting rather than only showing the last 50 albums.
* Fixed numerous bugs with initial connection to server; detect if the
CLI port is incorrect rather than failing silently and try and detect
when the server IP/ports have changed by rescanning for the server.
* More optimal memory usage and handling of low-memory situations.
* Numerous other minor bug fixes and improvements.
* New, improved icon!

Squeemote is available on the iTunes App Store:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=298005260&mt=8

I don't know how many copies iPeng has sold but I'm certain its
significantly more than Squeemote. But even then, I can safely say that
if I was to calculate how much Squeemote has "cost", based on my typical
daily rate and the time spent on it, what I have earned from it wouldn't
even be approaching a quarter of that amount.

Hmm, this appears to be a regression; this was certainly fixed in an
earlier release. If you come across any bugs please do try and report
them on the Squeemote support site
(http://getsatisfaction.com/lukeredpath) as I won't always see them on
here.

I'll make sure this gets fixed in the next release.

That's interesting; I always thought that the Squeezeboxes were fairly
dumb clients, with most of the work being done on the server. I didn't
realize that something would need implementing in the firmware, so I
guess that's what rules out a third-party from having a go and I guess I
have my answer. A shame.

Incidentally, the Plex plugin seems to be quite buggy still so I guess
it's Spotify on my iPhone with iPhone speakers for now!

I've seen this thread however that is about a very specific "hack" to
get Spotify working on the Squeezebox. I'm not interested in hacks, I'm
interested in a native plugin. I just wondered if anybody here has
started to play with the Spotify API (there is a C library for playback
and a HTTP API for library access). It's only available to premium users
mind you (which I am, as I use Spotify on my iPhone, but Squeezebox
support would be the killer reason to keep it).

[slim] Spotify on Squeezebox now possible?

2009-12-08 Thread Luke Redpath

I'm currently sitting here browsing and listening to Spotify (including
all of my playlists) through it's beautiful Plex interface
(http://plexapp.com). So my question is, if this is possible, has
anybody here started work on a SqueezeCenter plugin or is there still
some other barrier in place that I haven't thought of (other than
technical know-how)?

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

Just bumping this thread for two reasons:

ralphy, if git isn't your thing, if you can make your subversion
repository public (google code isn't bad for free svn hosting) then I'd
be happy to maintain a git mirror using git-svn.

Also, regarding my problems with streams; it seems that the problem is
with WMA streams. This might be an OSX-specific problem; I have Windows
Media codecs installed using Flip4Mac but I'm not sure if these are
available to squeezeslave. Any ideas?

Yes, I discovered this the other day after installing the Napster
plugin. It seems that unlike some of the other music services, you can
drill down through every Napster item. I've already started work on
improving the music services screens so you can play Napster items. I
may opt for touch-and-hold (ala iPeng), an extra menu item, or both.

Glad you like the sync UI, I've spent a lot of time trying to get it
right. I still don't think its perfect (especially with people for lots
of sync groups) but for people who just want to sync other devices with
their active device I think it hits the spot.

I'll definitely be adding favorites support in the future; I actually
started work on it and hit a few brick walls so I put it off for the
time being but I will be coming back to it.

Re: internationalization, yes it would be nice to get some common
translations (I'm thinking French, Spanish and German to begin with)
and I may need some help but this will be further down the line.

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2009-03-02 Thread Luke Redpath

OK, building it with the static libs set explicitly seems to do the
trick; I gave it to a friend to try out and it ran without any errors.
He wasn't able to get it to connect to my server over the net though (I
believe I had the right ports open on my router) but this may be a
separate issue.

Feel free to give this a try:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/570528/squeezeslave.tar.gz

If this actually works, I'd be happy to try and set up some kind of
automated build-process that builds a new binary from nightly pulls
from the source code repo.

If on the first launch it is unable to detect your server within 20
seconds, it will prompt you with a manual connection screen. This
information *should* be saved and it shouldn't try and auto-detect on
the next launch. If this isn't the case then this is a bug which I will
also look into.

It's very hard for me to debug this kind of thing from my end so I'd be
very grateful if somebody experience connection problems would be
willing to give me access to their server over the net (temporarily) so
I can try and debug the issue. Ideally somebody in UK for timezone
reasons.

If anybody can do this and will be around between 7pm-midnight GMT,
please email me, luke AT lukeredpath.co.uk. Anybody who can help me out
will get an adhoc build once the issue has been resolved to tide you
over until the fixed release is on the app store. Thanks.

Not as far as I'm aware; as I said before, the only thing that I can
think would be causing it is the persistent connection it opens to the
CLI.

Have you tried Apple's own Remote app? If not, could you give it a try
(set it to persist the connection to itunes) and see if you see
something similar.

A bug has been discovered in the artist sorting code that would cause
artists to sometimes be sorted incorrectly or in some cases prevent the

Thanks to the Squeemote user who helped me debug this problem by

this bug has now been fixed and a new release (1.2.1) has been submitted

[slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.2, now with device sync!

2009-02-27 Thread Luke Redpath

Thanks to a quick turnaround from Apple this week (only three days), I'm
happy to announce that Squeemote 1.2 is now available. The biggest
feature in this release is the new quick device selector and device
sync functionality. There is also some added extras such as browse by
genre and other UI tweaks, various bug fixes and performance
improvements.

Here's a complete changelog:

I've also pushed out a few changes to the 'Squeemote website'
(http://lukeredpath.co.uk/squeemote). Enjoy the new release and if
you've been holding off of trying out Squeemote because of its lack of
device sync capabilities, I ask you to give it a try. Work on 1.3 has
already begun in earnest.

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2009-02-26 Thread Luke Redpath

I've spent a bit of time trying to compile this on OSX Leopard and I
finally had some success, so I thought I'd outline the steps I took if
anybody else would like to give it a try.

Most of my issues seemed to stem from the fact that my dependencies
were installed using MacPorts which puts headers/libs in /opt.

1. Install dependencies using MacPorts: flac, libvorbis, libmad

2. Tweak makefile.osx so it knows where to find everything it needs:

http://gist.github.com/71202

3. Patch the bundled portaudio lib to change one of the typedefs as it
conflicts with a typedef in one of the system libraries:

Code:

  cd lib/portaudio && perl -pi -e 's,uint32,pa_uint32,g' */*.c */*.h

You should now be good to go!

Code:

  $ make -f makefile.osx
  $ cp bin/squeezeslave /(opt|usr)/local/bin

Good news: I've made a lot of progress on Squeemote this week and am
hopeful that I can submit a new release to Apple this weekend. Here's
the preliminary changelog:

* Added support for device synching
* Devices can now be powered on/off
* New quick device switching interface from Now Playing screen
* Added browse by genre
* Tab order can be rearranged (order will be saved when Squeemote is
closed)
* Improved data caching mechanism. Data is now initially cached on
first load, and future cache updates are automatically downloaded in
the background if a server rescan has taken place since the cache was
last updated. Manual resyncs are no longer necessary
* Cache the artists list for improved performance
* Improved support for servers with authentication enabled when
auto-detecting server, with a simple authentication dialog (no manual
settings required other than username/password)
* Fixed bug where Squeemote would stop receiving updates after being
locked for a period of time

Can't think why it wouldn't update; are you able to download the update

version from your phone and resync (don't worry about losing your

[slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.1 available in the iTunes App Store

2009-01-23 Thread Luke Redpath

I'm happy to announce that Apple have just approved the first update to
Squeemote. The biggest new feature in this release is the improved
support for music services and internet radio and there have been
plenty of bug fixes and performance improvements. Here's a full
changelog:

* Added support for browsing Music Services and Internet Radio
stations.
* Improved handling of music service and internet radio streams on the
now playing screen, including displaying the correct
artist/album/title/artwork for music service tracks.
* Squeemote will now automatically discover your server.
* Added support for server authentication and improved the layout of
the initial setup screen.
* Reduced initial startup time.
* Improved display of album tracks when browsing music library.
* Artists list now respects "ignored articles" server setting when
sorting.
* Added "clear playlist" button to current playlist screen.
* Improved responsiveness of volume slider control.
* Added "disable auto-lock" setting to prevent device from going into
standby.
* Numerous bug-fixes and performance/reliability improvements.

Work on 1.2 is already coming along and will hopefully be submitted to
Apple within the next week. This is a smaller release which will
contain support for Genres and a few more bug fixes as well as an
overhaul to the way the local caching works. This means no more need to
manually sync the albums list; it will instead check to see if a server
scan has occurred recently and if so, it will update the cache in the
background.

I'm still working on player sync but this will probably not be done
until 1.3.

Enjoy the new release, and remember if you have any questions you can
email me or ask me any questions on here. The best place to go for
support however is to Squeemote's Get Satisfaction page:
http://getsatisfaction.com/lukeredpath/products/lukeredpath_squeemote.
As Steve Jobs would say, I think you'll love this update. ;)

Squeemote also caches the thumbnails on the device, but not the larger
artwork displayed on the now playing screen currently. I've just
switched over to using the stretched artwork for the list view as the
differences in aspect ratios made the list look strange. I still use
the original aspect ratio for the now playing view.

Also, having just tried changing Squeemote to use "stretch" mode, the
time taken to retrieve the artwork from SqueezeCenter increases
significantly.

Using the iPhone simulator and a local build, with stretch mode off, it
takes about 15 seconds to download artwork for just over 700 albums.
With stretch mode on, this increases to over 2 minutes.

Squeemote 1.1 has now been submitted to Apple so it is now in their
hands. Hopefully it won't take more than a week for approval. Here are
some screenshots to whet your appetite:

Re: [slim] iTunes going DRM Free

2009-01-06 Thread Luke Redpath

Aren't they AAC files? I thought they were better than MP3 at the same
bitrate.

Personally, I don't have high-end expensive hifi equipment so I can't
really tell the difference between a 256kbps+ MP3/AAC file and an
uncompressed file maybe 90% of the time.

Amazon is still cheaper though.

Thought you might like to know that this evening I've got
authentication up and running so it will definitely be in the next
release (along with music service/internet radio browsing).

iTunes connect is closed for Christmas so its unlikely any updates will
be submitted to Apple this week, but at my current rate I expect to have
Squeemote 1.1 submitted to Apple by the end of next week, and in the
store the week after (touch wood).

I didn't do what you suggested because I the gesture conflicted with
the wording and I wasn't sure what would be the best way to do this
UI-wise. I have now thought of a nice way of doing it so I'm going to
implement this in the next release.

Regarding the playlists, I'm pretty sure it should pick up external
changes to the playlist so I will investigate this over the weekend.

A quick note regarding the "next release"; most new features discussed
here will probably be in the next point release, 1.1, but I will
probably release a 1.0.1 bug fix release before that happens as I don't
want to delay bug fixes.

I have seen this on the odd occasion but it seems difficult to
reproduce. I've been doing some refactoring and code cleanup and some
streamlining of the startup code so hopefully this will go away. It
might be that the socket connection to the CLI is failing in some way.

Re: [slim] Squeemote 1.0 available on the iTunes Store

2008-12-19 Thread Luke Redpath

I've looked at setting up Squeemote as a streaming client but the stream
seemed to have far too much of a delay for it to be usable. If this
changes, it is definitely something I would look at.

Regarding crashing on playlists, could you be more specific - does it
seem random? Do you do something in particular before it crashes? Has
it crashed anywhere else?

Glad you like the devices screen. The main reason I haven't tackled
multiple device playback is because I think its a hard problem to solve
UI-wise. Its something I want to get just right and requires some
thought.

Re: powering off devices -most definitely coming. Its my biggest
annoyance (about my own app!). Again this was more of a UI problem than
a programming issue. I will work it out.

Out of interest, how big is your library and how long did it take to
sync? What about downloading artwork? I'm aware that performance is
affected whilst this is happening but it should only happen when you
sync (and I plan to add a feature in the next release to refresh
artwork for a single album).

I'll be the first to say it doesn't have as many features as iPeng -
Pippin has done a great job getting as much as he has into iPeng (I
wish I had the time). I am confident that what Squeemote does do is
done in a polished way. For example:

* Touch and hold tracks for add to the playlist
* Switch to the now playing screen and control your Squeezebox using
the normal remote - watch Squeemote update in real time.

The alert sheet method always seemed inadequate. It required tapping on
a disclosure button to pop it up and it was far to easy to miss and
actually tap the whole row, thus destroying the entire playlist.

I would say this, but "touch and hold" works really nicely. You just
hold the row for a second and it will flash to indicate its been added.
The downside is that its not immediately obvious, but then neither is
the swipe to delete gesture unless you know about it. Once you do know,
it seems quite intuitive.

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

Naturally I'll be giving this a spin this weekend. Not too keen on the
UI personally, seems a bit chaotic in places, but I'll reserve
judgement. I'm most interested in seeing what its like performance-wise
and how well it handles updates as a result of normal interaction with
the server (e.g. web interface or normal remote).

Also interested to see you've taken the approach of using an alert
sheet to display "play now, play next" buttons. I took this approach to
begin with but developed a new "hold to queue" gesture, with a normal
tap for play now.

I started off with the polling approach but found polling the server
for status updates impacted on performance too much so I've moved over
to a notification-based approach, maintaining as much state as possible
in the domain model of the app, only retrieving status updates where
necessary.

There is something quite cool about changing the volume (using the
normal SqueezeBox remote) and seeing the volume slider update in
realtime. :)

I haven't bothered with genre browsing yet as it didn't seem like a
priority. I only have around 700 albums or so too and it takes about 10
seconds to sync but one of my beta testers had over 3000 albums.

[slim] Preview: iSqueeze iPhone Remote

2008-10-31 Thread Luke Redpath

Thanks to everyone who has helped out with beta testing so far. I'm just
about to release what is hopefully the final beta before the final
release is published to the app store.

I'm hoping the first release covers all of the basics and covers them
well. Here, as promised, are some screenshots of the app in it's (near)
final state.

I don't know; I wasn't just thinking in terms of features, more
improvements.

Guess I better hurry up and release iSqueeze...just got to iron out
those last few bugs. The Sonos app looks really nice and gives me a few
ideas for future iSqueeze versions.

You can only purchase apps from the app store with the 2.0 firmware or
greater as far as I'm aware, and iSqueeze will require SqueezeCenter 7
I'm afraid.

The artwork on the album view is cached (as is the album list itself).
The artwork on the now playing view isn't. No coverflow I'm afraid;
it's not trivial and probably beyond my knowledge of Core Animation.

Re: [slim] iSqueeze for iPhone/iPod touch preview

2008-10-08 Thread Luke Redpath

I've asked beta testers not to post any screenshots but I will try and
get some updated screenies up on here some time this week, as the UI
is close to it's final state now.

Re: features, I've tried to focus on getting the basics right for the
first release so it certainly won't be as feature packed as the web
interface and probably not iPeng either but a rough list of features
is:

* Browse library by artist -> album or all albums (with artwork)
* Browse new music
* Browse playlists
* Control multiple devices on a network
* Play entire albums or individual tracks, or queue tracks at the end
of the current playlist
* Now Playing view much like the built-in iPod app, with full size
artwork, volume, play, pause, skip controls.
* Playlist control, including tap to select a track, playlist editing
(move/delete/clear).

And I've just got real-time push notifications from the server working
using the standard CLI, which means no more polling of the JSON-RPC
interface for state changes.

Re: [slim] iSqueeze for iPhone/iPod touch preview

2008-09-24 Thread Luke Redpath

It's currently in it's beta testing stage. It may take a month or so to
get to a 1.0 release. Then it's up to Apple. Assuming my contract has
been activated by then, it depends on how long it takes to get it into
the App store.

It annoys me too and I'm already working on the way you add tracks to
the current playlist, using a "touch and hold" gesture instead of the
button on the right - hopefully this will make it into the next beta
release over the weekend as I'm really keen to get feedback on this.

I'm definitely looking into crashes although I think I'm going to have
a find a way to get hold of crash logs from you guys.

How can I reproduce this locally? I don't use LastFM with my

Not sure what you mean - do you mean when the track changes, the track
name at the top of the screen doesn't update?

Already on the todo list!

Hi vitoruch - yes, you are talking about the other iSqueeze, now named
Mobile, which is a SqueezeCenter skin, whereas mine is a native iPhone
application. It is currently in the beta testing stage but should
hopefully be released on the iTunes app store in the coming months.

Re: [slim] iSqueeze for iPhone/iPod touch preview

2008-09-15 Thread Luke Redpath

The problem with loading a large amount of albums is an interesting one.
I imagine the reason its crashing for you at the moment is because the
request for the album list is taking longer than the timeout I've set
(30 seconds) and my error handling in this error is probably a bit
ropey. I could just increase the timeout (to say, 60 seconds) but that
still doesn't seem like the ideal solution - you've still got to wait a
minute for the list to load and what if you're library is even larger?

One option is to break the list up in to sections (a-d, e-h etc.) a bit
like the SqueezeCenter interface but this seems awkward too and breaks
the A-Z index navigation.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again to everybody who has got in touch. I've sent the initial
beta invites out now but if I need any more I have a good list to
choose from.

The beta should be released over this weekend so hopefully there will
be some early feedback from beta testers soon. I also hope to release
the app's website over the weekend.

I just wanted to add to the above; if there does turn out to be any code
in the application that is abstract enough to be generally useful to the
iPhone development community as a whole, I will almost certainly release
it under an open-source license, NDA/T&Cs permitting.

Simply, because I think it's worth paying for and would pay for it
myself had somebody else developed it. I support open-source software
and have released a lot of open-source code over the years (and
continue to do so) but I don't think that should preclude somebody from
wanting to charge for software either. You're of course free to not
purchase it and use any open-source/free alternatives should they
become available and I don't think commercial offerings damage the free
software ecosystem in anyway.
