On my last visit to my local PC World didn't have the Sonos but did
have a SB3 , Boom and a Duet on display, but I would very much doubt
that any of the staff would be able to give a decent demonstration.

Re: [slim] Premature endings

2009-11-16 Thread MuckleEck

I too see some of these 'clipped' ends of songs, there seem to be more
of them on mp3s than on FLAC. So I am slowly re-ripping those CDs that
were originally ripped to mp3 to FLAC, a slow process but seems to get
rid of the premature end.

Re: [slim] A question about cats

2009-11-12 Thread MuckleEck

Over on this side of the pond I would recommend using the best cable you
can afford labour costs totally outweigh the cost of the materials.

Using some form of pre-roped ducting is great although knowing some of
the building pratcices I have seen they won't respect that fact that
tight bends are a no-no.

When we had our extension built I had ducting run from the house under
the extension out to my garden office, and being a fibre person I ran
150m of fibre .future proof...

Since the UK requires building inspections during construction you will
require LSOH cables or plenum cables in walls, or voids.

Re: [slim] Controller Screen Protection

2009-03-09 Thread MuckleEck

MeSue,

I have used a screen only protector ever since I got my Duets (not the
exact one but as specified in an earlier post I used a similar sized
phone one)

I also have a Harmony 1000 remote and got the full body protector for
that, it can be fiddly to fit and I am not sure I like the slightly
rubbery feel, it also makes it harder to seat in the cradle.

I am not sure how the full body protector will fit in the Duet cradle
there is not much room there.

a) The ability to install as an add-in ...yipeee..no more remote

b) as far as the console is concerned:-
1) Start/Stop of SC
2) Detailed Stats of last scan and any changes from previous scan.
c) Ability to add plug-ins to SC.

That is about it.

If you find that 7.2 is so "buggy" then as an alternative why don't you
go back to 7.0 or 7.1, whilst this is not ideal, are there any burning
issues that 7.2 was providing that 7.0/7.1 was not?

Personally I haven't upgraded to 7.2, 7.1 is working for me and I
haven't come across anything that I can't do as yet.

Have to disagree, I ripped a CD to ALAC when I was just on itunes and
the last track sounded horrible, badly distorted and the orchestra
sounded as though they were in a wee tin box. Re-ripped to FLAC using
dBpoweramp and AccurateRip and it was perfect. Interestingly my CD

Re: [slim] Albumart

2008-09-08 Thread MuckleEck

Itunes stores the album art in an odd fashion (there are a number of
other posts about this).

SC cab only see the album art if it is either embedded into the music
file or it is contained in a cover.jpg (or similar) file in the album
directory.

If you are using windows, you can use MP3tag to see whether the album
art is embedded or not.

In itunes you can also drag the art into the file and then itunes will
embed it AFAIK.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox controller outdoors?

I use mine outdoors but like a lot of LCD screens of the sunlight is
very bright then it can be problematic seeing the screen. I do find
that this is worse if you are wearing sunglasses. Having said that it
is no worse than your average mobile phone outdoors!

When will this be implemented, it would enable me to have a much larger

That would be the biggest issue that I have with the system, to me one

Re: [slim] Receiver & Controller Ad-hoc Connection

2008-07-11 Thread MuckleEck

If you have a wireless network in the house anyway the controller can
use that permanently without the need for an ad-hoc connection to the
receiver. Although you may need to have it create an ad-hoc connection
to switch over to wired from wireless, then switch back to your
wireless network.

I decided to use home plugs (Netgear 200HD) as a method of getting more
reliable connections. I did try the MaxValue ones from Amazon but they
are rubbish (even the 85M ones) they slowed the rest of the network
down all the time. So went with the more expensive Netgear ones.

2008-06-13 Thread MuckleEck

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48780

Question: Which user category do you belong to most ?

- The geek
- The audiophile
- The structured music lover
- Massmarket Joe
- Other (None of the above fits me, see wiki page before choosing
  this)

I voted Geek...although I would like to be an audiophile...my ears
aren't up to scratch and my wallet ain't fat enough. The "tagger", I am
one of them too but only when I get the CDs, once they are on the box
they stay out. Couldn't be mass market JJoe!

So Geek was the only sensible choice although I would have preferred a
category split between all of the first three...:-)

I can't remember what firmware version I had when mine was delivered

Battery life is average, about a long evening, shorter than the Harmony

Have things improved since you have been able to upgarde the firmware?

I have found that if you have a lot of greatest hits albums and use
some in-car ipod kits when you scroll the albums all you see is

Greates.
Greates.
Greates.
Greates.

as the system is limited to 8 characters...

So putting the artist in the front may helpalthough any not
always!

Going back to the SC issue, I did have the issue with a Kiss album and
a Shania Twain album both being under Kiss...one was mp3 the other
FLAC.

I re-ripped both as FLAC and the issue went away.

Still on SC 7.0

I don't want to get involved in the minutae of database structures as
that is not my speciality, however if you want to discuss underseas
telecommunication I shall chip in.

Getting to the point about multiple genres, I have a large number
(1000s) of tracks that have multiple genres as shown in the following
example (not all tags included):-

J S Bach - Great Organ Works - Toccata & Fugue - BWV 538
Genres - Classical,Organ,Instrumental

In this way I can play random classical music and still get this piece
and all other classical, alternatively I can specify instrumental and
get this as well as other single instrument pieces or I can be very
specific and just listen to organ music, it all depends on the mood I
am in.

Perhaps I am in the minority!

Or do I buy a larger one and cut it to size?

Is there a priority for reading artwork i.e.

Artwork embedded first then cover.jpg or folder.jpg second?

Also if you have both front and back artwork embedded which does it
choose?

Not sure what you mean by "flaky" I use the remote desktop into my WHS
box a lot and find it rock solid, are you using it over a wireless or
wired connection?...if wired what speed, I run at GigE and as I said it
is solid. Running over wireless may not be so solid.

In addition, if you are using SC on the WHS make sure that all
tagging/ripping is done on a different machine and that you don't edit
the music files on the WHS box, I have had to re-rip a couple of CDs
due to the "data corruption" bug, when using Foobar

[slim] Softsqueeze Screen Placement

2008-04-02 Thread MuckleEck

Maybe it is me being dumb but I can't quite understand how to fix this
issue.

I use softsqueeze (ver 3.6) on my PC in my office to listen to music
whilst working.
I like to have the SB3 display with the horizontal remote.

I want to be able to move the remote and the SB display independently
of each other, every time I move one the other moves.

When I switch the remote off and then on again the positioning of the
remote is random on the screen.

I am using a dual monitor setup - screen 1 main and screen 2 extended
desktop..

Any ideas anyone?

[slim] Server Logging - Issues

2008-04-02 Thread MuckleEck

(this is probably one for AndyG or similar)

I have had problems in the past with the server log filling up (caused
by the weather/date/time but that issue has been resolved) so decided
to set ALL logging to off.

I was away at the weekend and on returning found that the SBs were all
showing 13:19 on the Friday 28th March (I returned some 48 hours after
that time)

I was able to access the server that SC7 is running on and it the
computer was running fine.

SC on the other hand had stopped responding.

The server log was > 3G.

I shut SC7 down and copied the log over to another PC (slowly)

I have had a look at the log today by splitting into manageable
chunks.

The first section of the log is in the attached file

The last section of the log is also attached.

Questions:-

1. Since ALL logging was off why was a log produced at all.
2. What happened? (if anything)

Many Thanks

My System is as follows:-

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Windows Server 2003 - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

[slim] How do you use your Squeezbox/Receiver/Transporter

2008-04-02 Thread MuckleEck

It seems to me that there have been a number of threads both in these
fora and on the wider internet about the use of synchronisation with
music services like Rhapsody/Pandora/Slacker and Internet Radio as well
as local music files.

I am intrigued about how important sync is to people out there,
personally living in a family with kids, whose music taste is very
different from mine, I am more interested in being able to receive
multiple sources at the same time. The only exception to this rule is
when we have a party and then we will sync two of the SBs (kitchen and
lounge) to provide a seamless listening environment, I see no point in
syncing the bedroom SB or the office SB during a party...doesn't make
sense.

What are other peoples views?

Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos

2008-03-30 Thread MuckleEck

The most galling thing about Ben Rose's post on CNET and his posts on
here are that, as a person resident in the UK he can't legally use
Rhapsody/Pandora etc so why state that the Sonos can stream to more
than 3 rooms and the SB can't when in his case it is irrelevant.

This is something that I would like answered as well, currently I have

However I do not understand, as you have pointed out, why logging is

[slim] Server.log filling up (>13G after 6 weeks)

I have been using SC7 on Windows Home Server with two plug-ins

I have the AudioEngine 2s in my kitchen which is about 25 feet by 13
feet, they make plenty of noise when required, more than enough.

I have the pot on the speakers set to about 60% and use the volume

I use the UNC path for both the music folder and the playlists, I
understand that WHS will not work properly if you use non-UNC paths to
access the files, something to do with the duplication.

I for one am glad there is a volume control all three of my SB3s are
connected to either (a) Audioengine A2s which do have a volume control
on the back but as they are up on high shelves in the kitchen prefer to
use the remote for the SB3 (b) directly into a Linn power amp attached
to Acoustat electrostatic panels, I don't think these are classed as
"downmarket" but maybe I am wrong! And this is the way the TP will be
when I get round to buying one.

And yes I do live in the UK!

No you are not missing anything, it is a fairly "manual" process with
MP3tag, select all tracks from an album, then select tag sources,
amazon.com or .de depending on your fancy it will then provide some
options to access the webpage for that album in Amazon then you need to
copy/paste the cover over to the relevant folder.

I was happy to do it this way, slow but sure for those albums that did
bot have cver art, I was also doing a lot of re-tagging (my collection
is predominantly classical)

Alternatively try Album Art Aggregator
(http://team.thenexusnet.com/nexus/AAA/) haven't tried it but may do
more of a batch job.

I have to disagree, album artwork downloaded by itunes into the itunes
directory does not show up in Squeezecenter (they are stored as ITC
files in the Album Artwork folder). Artwork downloaded separately and
put into the folders, embedded into the file, or added by a 3rd party
application into itunes will show up. Itunes will display album art
when it is stored as a folder.jpg, embedded into the file or when it is
stored in the itunes directory, itunes will not tell you how it is
stored, or even where it is stored.

Most of the guys here on the forum use FLAC and with foobar2000 or

FLAC (again lossless)

Once in FLAC, mp3tag or MediaMonkey can bring the atrwork in

Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?

2008-03-07 Thread MuckleEck

geoh,

unfortunately the way itunes stores the artwork is AFAIK not supported
by anything other than itunes.

To get artwork visible use MP3tag (if you are running a PC) and have it
download artwork as folder.jpg to each separate album folder.
SqueezeCenter can then read these folder.jpg files.

Alternatively copy and paste each of the images from itunes into the
directories manually they will be saved as image.bmp so will need to
add that name to Squeezecenter, this could be very laborious depending
on how many albums you have.

FInally you could try http://sourceforge.net/projects/iaae although I
haven't personally used it

When you run Squeezecenter, it will say there are no players available,
under extras (mid to bottom left of the home screen) there will be a
link to download softsqueeze (free software version of the Squeezebox)

Once downloaded it will play your music on your PC.

Yes Softsqueeze is a mediaplayer. But no, it will not be replaced with
the controller, the controller will act as the remote control for
softsqueeze, as it can act as a remote for the Squeezebox.

Svanur,

If I understand you correctly this is what you have

Music W2K03 -> PC MCE -> AV Receiver -> Speakers (internal and
external)

If so then

1) Install Squeezecenter on the PC MCE or W2K03 and scan music
2) Install Softsqueeze on the PC MCE and point it at Squeezecenter
3) Use the Squeezebox Controller to Control Softsqueeze via your
wireless network

You can download and install 1 & 2 to see if you like the setup and
check that the output is ok, before buying the controller.

Presumably they put it at the back for two reasons:-

1) Aestheticsclean lines etc looks nice
2) The majority of people will be using some form of music player
(ipod, SB3 etc) which has it's own volume control remotely acessible,
so the control on the back is there to set a min-max setting.

In my case I set it low to stop my young kids setting the volume too
high! and for that I am glad it is on the back :-)

If they have no idea then that is Logitechs fault for not keeping their

FLAC lossless as an option. They also have some CD Master quality
