[slim] Issues With Internet Radio & Podcasts

2010-02-26 Thread ShutterShock

I’ve recently moved from a Cable broadband ISP in the city to a
satellite-delivered ISP out in the country.

Not surprising, I’m having issues getting Internet Radio to stream, and
podcasts to run through the SB podcast player app. The most common
problem is when I request an Internet radio station or podcast, I get a
“Timed Out” message on my SB. I assume this is a result of the latency
in using satellite for internet (I'm assured by the ISP that I don't
have a bandwidth issue).

I was wondering if there were settings buried in SB Server that would
allow me to enlarge the window of time for an Internet radio service or
podcast to fill the buffer before SB gives up on it, based on
misinterpreting the stream as unavailable.

Also, in light of my unusual ISP circumstances, does it make sense to
go into Squeezebox Server and decouple SBS from mysqueezebox.com? My
thinking is that the interaction between the server and "the cloud" may
be adding to the problem.

Thanks.

[slim] Correct Operation of SB Controller

2008-08-24 Thread ShutterShock

As per another post, my Controller stops displaying artwork after a
period of time. Perhaps to put it more accurately, the Controller
stops displaying artwork after a number of album/podcast/internet radio
selections (i.e.: it may not be a function of time but rather a function
of the number of call-ups for artwork).

Anyway, this behavior coincided with my upgrade to SqueezeCenter 7.1.0.
I’m not attributing it to that but the undesirable behavior certainly
wasn’t present prior to the upgrade.

The only work-around I’ve been able to come up with is to power off and
then power on the Controller. This got me thinking that perhaps the
expectation is that the Controller is to be powered-down after the user
is finished with it. Up until this problem, I always left the
Controller powered on and let it fall into its sleep mode.

So, with that long-winded explanation out of the way, how do you use
your Controller? Do you power it down when you’re not using it? Was
that the way Slim Devices/Logitech intended to have the Controller used
(it’s not explicit in the manual)?

I have album art stored as a 'cover.jpg' file in each album's dedicated

Re: [slim] Controller No Longer Displaying Artwork

2008-08-20 Thread ShutterShock

AVG Free (ver 8) doesn’t allow for file extension exceptions.
Exceptions are limited to folders. Since the *.MYI and *.MYD files go
to temporary folders I didn’t think there be any point in
invoking the exception. Besides, when I access SC 7.1 through a
browser, album art images load very quickly – almost immediately.
Also, a poll on this forum shows a large proportion of SC users are
running AVG. I can only assume they're not having this problem.

The key clue to me is in the Controller itself. If I power-cycle the
Controller, images load on the Controller reliably. Over time,
however, the images stop loading. Anecdotally, it seems directly
related to the number of images (i.e.: album covers, podcasts, Internet
radio stations) that are called up. Power-cycle the Controller and
I’m fine until The Controller reaches it’s
‘limit’.

The Controller shows me running the latest s/w version. I also did a
factory reset at one point to see if that would improve reliability of
the Controller. No change unfortunately…

Any thoughts/suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [slim] Controller No Longer Displaying Artwork

2008-08-19 Thread ShutterShock

Went through the other thread. The main difference is the other problem
was consistent whereas the behavior I'm observing seems intermittent.
Still, I think it is plausible that my AV software is possibly
curtailing the creation of temporary directories -- or affecting them
somehow.

Am using AVG 8.0 (free) having been persuaded previously to de-install
Kespersky. Won't know until I get home whether this version has
options to ignore file certain extensions.

Will advise tomorrow. In the meantime, thanks for chiming in.

[slim] Controller No Longer Displaying Artwork

2008-08-19 Thread ShutterShock

I upgraded from SqueezeCenter 7.0 to 7.1 over the weekend and have
discovered the Controller no longer reliably displays album artwork.
In addition, artwork from web based sources (Podcasts and Internet
Radio) no longer consistently display on the Controller.

If I power-cycle the Controller, album art loads somewhat reliably but
in very short order, it stops appearing.

I’ve confirmed the images are loading in SqueezeCenter via the browser
interface (albeit not that quickly). It appears there’s something
stopping the images from 'being sent' to the controller (or are they
'pulled' from SC by the Controller?). Do I have a setting on SC 7.1,
or in the Controller that needs changing? Any other thoughts?

BTW, I’m running SC on a 2 GHz Core 2 with 2 GB of RAM. The content is
on a Drobo/Droboshare NAS. Access to the NAS is lightning fast (through
Windows) so I can’t imagine there’s an issue with any of my hardware.

[slim] Issue with Album Artwork & Podcast Images in SC 7.1

2008-08-18 Thread ShutterShock

I have one of the early Duets. I loaded SqueezeCenter 7.1 over the
weekend and have noticed the Controller no longer consistently displays
album artwork. (BTW, I have the album jpeg image located in the same
folder as the album’s flac files). Also related to this, I find the
Controller won’t display Podcast images consistently. As a ‘visual
person’, I’d actually appreciate having this capability – even for
podcasts.

If I power-cycle the controller images load somewhat reliably but over
time, they only appear intermittently.

I’ve confirmed the images are loading in SqueezeCenter, so there’s
something stopping them from 'being sent' to the controller. Any
thoughts?

Does anyone know if this is for real? The proportions hint at the

[slim] SqueezeCenter Sluggish

2008-06-10 Thread ShutterShock

Hoping the Slim Devices community can help me track down the reasons why
SoftSqueeze is behaving sluggishly.

Everything was working perfectly up until I made some changes last
weekend. First, here's the 'working' configuration before I made any
changes:

- Win XP Pro
- SqueezeCenter 7.0
- Drobo/Droboshare
- AVG 8.0 Antivirus

Last weekend's changes:

- Same mother board/CPU
- Same HDD
- Same Drobo/Droboshare
- New case/power supply
- Replaced recent model DVD burner with an older CD burner
- SqueezeCenter 7.1
- Fresh install of Win XP (home edition this time)
- Kespersky 7.0 antivirus replaces AVG

Prior to making these changes, SqueezeCenter was incredibly responsive.
Even when calling up a huge folder (50+ tracks), SqeezeBox would begin
playing immediately. The only exception was my Playlist folder where
SqueezeCenter/Drobo would have to 'think' for a brief period before the
list would populate.

Now that behavior occurs no matter what folder I call up. If a track
is playing and I select a different track for another folder, it can
take over 15 seconds for the new track to begin playing. When I look
directly on the SqueezeCenter UI, 'Loading' appears and the list builds
quite slowly. Even jumping down to another track in a populated list
results in a delay before the track begins to play.

One hint could be my router. With all this rework last weekend, the
router locked up. When I recovered it, it's DHCP was handing out weird
IP addresses (e.g.: 99.xxx.xxx.xxx). Even the gateway address didn't
start with the typical 192.168.x.xxx. It also started with 99. I
eventually got the router to serve up a 'proper' IP address, along with
giving itself a typical gateway address but I wonder if the router is
responsible. Or could Kespersky be causing the problem?

Thanks for your indulgence through this long-winded post.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-13 Thread ShutterShock

Any suggestions on an attractive, compact amplifier/speaker combo to go
with the new SB Receiver? I’m thinking for secondary listening areas
such as a bedroom, kitchen or home office... Something really simple
in design and visually neutral.

It’d be similar in concept to some of the docking amplifier/speaker
solutions currently available for iPods but without the unsightly dock
for the iPod. Above average audio quality would be nice. So far, all
I’ve come across is the Tivoli Radio Model 2 (with subwoofer). It’s a
nice solution but I’m thinking there’s something even simpler with even
better audio quality.

BTW, a belated CONGRATULATIONS to the design team on Duet! Getting the
“Best of CES” from CNET will help spread the word of this exceptional
product line to the broader community.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS

2007-08-02 Thread ShutterShock

Ideally I want the plug 'n play approach. In fact, I guess that's what
my original question is (I'm probably making the explanation way too
complicated. Sorry about that).

Put simply, with Slim Server on an XP machine which is also running
ICS, will Squeezebox have any issues 'finding' Slim Server?

The LAN where Squeezebox and Slim Server/ICS are connected is all
wired. The only wireless part is the link from the ICS/Slim Server
computer to the neighbor's Wi-Fi. That wireless link is how the
internet is delivered to the LAN where Squeezebox, Slim Server/ICS are
located.

Hope this is making sense.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS

2007-08-02 Thread ShutterShock

Thanks for everyone who chimed in with suggestions. Unfortunately, I
don't have the flexibility to change the configuration as I originally
described it. It's not actually my installation. I'm doing it for a
relative on a very tight budget and they insist on not changing what
the already have. Selling them on the idea of Squeezebox was a major
effort. So, the configuration I originally described is what I'm stuck
with despite the excellent suggestions in this thread.

With that in mind, when I plug Squeezebox into and ICS PC (which will
also be running Slim Server), will the ICS box grant Squeezebox an IP
address, thereby giving it access to Slim Server? I'm thinking yes, in
light of the fact that when ICS is activated a DHCP server is created as
well. Put another way, when Squeezebox is initially connected, it
should 'look like' its connecting to a router. Again, any thoughts
appreciated.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS

2007-08-01 Thread ShutterShock

Would prefer to use a router but in this case the internet access is
through shared Wi-Fi with a neighbor.

Specifically, we have a D-Link wireless adapter in a computer's PCI
slot. It's been stand-alone up to this point but now we're putting in
a LAN and want to share internet access throughout the LAN. Coinciding
with this is the addition of a Squeezebox and Slim Server. If there's a
way of doing this with a router, I'm certainly interested.

[slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS

address from the ICS? From the instructions I've read on the web, it
sounds like I have to run a setup on every ICS client to explicitly
tell the client (in this case Sqeezebox) that it's connecting to the
internet through another computer -- that being the ICS computer.
Please see below.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/clientwiz.htm

Any help on this would be appreciated.

[slim] Cloning Slim Server Config

2007-07-10 Thread ShutterShock

I'm about to set up a new Slim Server for a friend. In the interest of
expedience, I'd like to take all the customization of my own Slim
Server (sever settings, RSS feeds etc.) and clone them directly to the
new installation. Are there a few config files I can merely copy over
or is it not that simple?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] flac on SB1

2007-02-26 Thread ShutterShock

Have neither. Will d/l flac.exe later this afternoon. Alternatively,
I'm pretty sure I can manually transcode the ape files to flac with
dbPowerAmp. I don't have many ape files so no big effort there...
That would solve the smaller of the two problems.

It's really tempting to replace the SB1 with a used SB2 or a new SB3.
I've been holding off though with hopes Logitech/Slim Devices will be
coming out with an 'SB4' with a color display. I guess that's a
subject for a different post.

Re: [slim] flac on SB1

2007-02-26 Thread ShutterShock

Bit Rate Limiting on SB1 is off. (It's a very short run via ethernet to
my router and slim server).

Don't have LAME encoder. Are you thinking that may be required to
transcode the flac and ape files? Didn't use to be an issue be perhaps
there are licensing issues since my last SS upgrade?

Also, as a last resort I did check all the boxes and SS is smart enough
to un-check the ones it can't support (e.g.: those needing a LAME
encoder).

Quick related comment... In SS, you can pull down the file format menu
from 'server settings' and 'player settings'. I initially thought
these were seperate files where the individual player files would
override the server settings. It looks like I was wrong... It's all
the same file. A bit confusing...

Re: [slim] flac on SB1

2007-02-26 Thread ShutterShock

Files checked off as you suggested. SB3 is fine but the SB1 won't play
flac files for some reason (MP3s are fine of course).

As for Monkey's Audio, I've checked off both flac format (mac/flac),
along with wav (mac) and various combinations of checked and unchecked
and now I can't get the files to play on either SB3 or SB1.

Any suggestions for either problem?

Re: [slim] flac on SB1

Thanks Marc,

So how does one select server decoding? From the File Format Conversion
options list, it implies server side conversion will transcode to
another file format such as WAV. Is this what I'm after?

[slim] flac on SB1

2007-02-26 Thread ShutterShock

Just did my first slim server s/w upgrade in ages. I have an SB3 and
everything is fine there. I also have an SB1, however, which no longer
plays flac or ape files. In checking the Slim Devices Wiki, it
indicates that slim server must do the transcoding for flac. I have
flac checked off (the 'built-in' option) but still no luck on the SB1.

Any advice?

Thanks.

[slim] Newbie Q: Slim Server on an Infrant ReadyNAS X6

2006-01-27 Thread ShutterShock

Was hoping to get insights from anyone who’s had experience running Slim
Server on an Infrant ReadyNAS X6. Specifically,

-How would you characterize the performance?
-What functions/operations are slow?
-What Slim Server features are not supported when installed on the
ReadyNAS Radiator O/S?
-Are there any issues with decoding FLAC or other lossless files?
-Is there commitment from both Slim Devices and Infrant to evolve this
combination?
-Are there better NAS based solutions for Slim Server/Squeezebox?

Thanks! BTW, I've also posted these questions on the Infrant forum.
