Congrats on your fatherhood! I myself also became a father on
Midsummer's Day, and I can say there's been A LOT LESS time for hanging
around internets and such, and for -my own stuff- since then.

Great to see you're back! I never doubted for a second. Well, only for
a second anyway. Even If I've had no time to post myself, I've kept up
with this forum by reading the email updates.

Next week we'll be moving into our new, bigger place from a small flat,
and there will definitely be a lot of SqueezeBoxing going on all around
in there! Even the kitchen cabinet is all wired up for taking a Boom
onboard! :) And I have a shiny new Honeycomb tablet waiting for new
versions of SC.

Bring it on!

Re: [slim] Why do you continue to use your Squeezebox ?

2011-07-24 Thread Skinny

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88916

Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ?

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that
  works good ?
- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to
  something else that supports this
- I would consider switching if someone offered something with
  similar functionality
- I have already started to look for something else but haven't found
  anything interesting yet
- I have already started or completed the transition to something
  else

I voted on the 1st alternative, but there were other valid points as
well. Such as having recently bought more .. :D Well I wouldn't have if
they didn't work well for me, would I?

I don't know if there is anything better out there, and honestly
couldn't be bothered. The Squeezebox system is so good that once I
found it some 3 years ago, I stopped looking at once. Haven't looked
anywhere else since then and probably won't find the need to anytime
soon.

flac. So I have SB server on my desktop and iTunes aren't really
necessary from what I'm understanding in order to get my music files to
my larger system. It is 5.1 but I'm using a Meridian system so I would
go 2 channel via SPDIF from whatever into my processor I think. Then I
could use an iPad for control? In that case the SB Touch downstairs
connected via ethernet (wall adaptor) is the best way to go?

That's right, you don't need iTunes for Squeezebox, as it is completely
unrelated and SBS has its own database for the music library. Depending
on your NAS, you may be able to run SBS on it, otherwise on the WHS. In
the latter case you could use either the ALAC library (on your WHS,
right?) or point to the FLACs on your NAS.

Yes, a SB Touch is perfect for your stereo system, as it supports
hi-res audio. Unless you already have powerline adapters I suggest
trying wirelessly, it might very well work. You can get them if/when
you actually need them. 5.1 DD DTS work great as well with
Squeezebox.

[slim] SqueezePlay Running on Canon Network Printer

2011-03-31 Thread Skinny

As a small weekend evening project, my software engineering buddy and
I have been working on getting SqueezePlay running on my Canon Pixma
MP620 multifunction printer. The printer has network connectivity, a
color screen (320x240, same as SB Radio), a scroll wheel and some
buttons, card reader, USB port.
Here are some results so far: Ability to browse menus, and act as a
controller for players (button mapping needs some work, but for most
functions there are logical buttons already), ability to set up SBR.
Planned: Playback through USB soundcard.

This is a low priority project, so don't expect fast progress. It may
become ready in a year or so.

How it looks so far:

It should work, depending on how the network is set up where you are
going to stay. If it requires you to log in each time to access the
Internet, you may be screwed, as you can't enter account credentials
using the Boom. If it is a protected/unprotected WLAN with free
Internet access, you should be fine.

As for power, just get a travel adapter equivalent to

The Boom should make a nice companion indeed.

OK,

on your PC, go to the Web UI on your browser (http://[serverIP]:9000),
to the lower-right you will find Settings -- Plugins tab.

At the bottom of the Plugins page, tick the box Show all 3rd party
plugins [x], click Apply. Then a plugin Tablet Skin should appear.
Tick the box and click Apply. SBS may want to restart, that's OK.

Now (still on your PC) you shold be able to go to

It has Lan Audio VGA 2 sata ports, 7 USB2, one slot for DDR2 800, Intel
Atom CPU included with passive heatsink. I'll be adding a 1GB DDR800
stick and 1TB internal Sata drive (WD green). I'll be running either XP
sp3 lite (nlited)' or maybe I'll run Vortexbox. What do guys think? Will
this be enough for SBS? I might even use this machine to run Torrents in
 the background.

One more question: Could this setup be enough to run FreeNas?

 Thanks

I am using that very MoBo in my SB / Storage server. I run Ubuntu
Server 10 (headless) and have 2 GB RAM. The board actually has 2 slots
for memory, for a max of 4 GB. It's very quick and responsive both as
SBS and NAS, no problem at all. GB ethernet is great for moving files.
I'm sure it would handle a lot more tasks, but right now I don't have
the need. FreeNAS should be no problem, nor torrents.

I even built another box for my parents using the single-core D410
(it's still Hyper Threaded), which is absolutely sufficient as they
don't need anything else than SBS on it.

For any server application, I can only recommend a Linux OS (VB is
supposedly great). Consider 2 GB memory, it's inexpensive. 667 or 800
MHz makes no difference here, get whichever you can find cheaper.

Yes, it's a good base for a SB server, and I've been very happy. I have
the OS on a CF card (CF-SATA) and a 2 TB Samsung Eco HDD for storage.

This has been discussed numerous times before, although some may have
missed it. Discontinuing the Classic was not entirely a Logitech
decision, as the VF display used is no longer being manufactured. It
was too expensive (the VFD), power hungry and what not. I'm not saying
they would not have replaced the Classic anyway, but as it is now, they
couldn't possibly have continued it. This is just what I've read around
here earlier.

For what it's worth, I'm a big fan of the cool look of the display on
my Boom. It has a serious no-nonsense look and feel to it. I'm not sure
that can be said of the SP generation. Great players, nonetheless.

In the Players Music Source view, click on your server after you have

When you start playback of the MP3 stream on a client, it appears as
another player on SBS. You have to choose it (upper right in web ui)
and play some music.

Re: [slim] Player Sync Questions

2010-11-04 Thread Skinny

A good rule of thumb regarding the direction of inheritance of
playlists, for adding more players to sync, etc. : The player you sync
from (the one you are controlling atm) inherits the playlist. Using
the same logic it's easy to understand how to add more players. Ok,
it's perhaps not intuitive but it is very clear and logical once you
know it. This way it is also logical that you can desync a single
player from a bunch of synced players while allowing them to continue
playing.

But I do like how it's done in SqueezeCommander for Android.

By default, when you play a format not supported by a player (such as
Apple Lossless Audio Compression on the SBR), it is converted to FLAC
for streaming to the player. You can disable FLAC compression if you
wish to ease the CPU load a little. The audio is then streamed as
uncompressed PCM to the player. The only difference is a small increase
in your local network traffic. Sound quality is unaffected.

In the Web UI, go to Server Settings -- Advanced -- File Types. For
Apple Lossless, choose FLAC [Disabled] and make sure PCM is enabled
[faad]. Click Apply.

You may need to restart the server.

Re: [slim] Problem: Skipping Effect Heard During Flac Playback

2010-10-20 Thread Skinny

Well, it obviously shouldn't happen, but when the two players for some
reason play at slightly different speeds skipping may occur when they
are re-synced. I've had this happen A LOT when using the Controller in
sync. The Controller plays so much slower, it is heard as a difference
in the pitch. (At least this was the case some time ago. Hopefully it
is better now, I haven't tried lately.)

You can try decoding FLAC-PCM server-side, and fiddling around with a
setting called something like sync frequency found somewhere in the
server settings (will check this later) to make it less noticeable.
Would it matter which way the players are synced, just a thought..?

Are others who mix the old and the new generation of players
experiencing this? I never thought about it in these terms before, as I
mostly only use the Receiver Boom in sync, Radio only occasionally.

[slim] Volume synced to MAX!

2010-09-09 Thread Skinny

This is what happened yesterday: I was listening to some music through
the Duet. It's digitally connected to the stereo, so volume is locked
at 100%. My better half was working on the PC in the next room and
wanted to get some music in there as well. So I synced the Radio in
there to the Receiver. What I didn't take into consideration was that I
had earlier set the volume to sync on the Radio, for syncing it with the
Boom. So, the Radio started playing at max volume in the middle of a
song. She got so scared followed by mad that she wanted to kill me at
that instant (well, she wasn't happy..). She thought I'd done it on
purpose, trying to be funny.

Needless to say, that was not a good SqueezeBox experience. I don't
want it to happen again, ever, to anyone!

I propose that some logic is implemented that in some smart way
prevents volume sync to a player that has it set locked at 100%, at
least for the Radio and Boom.

Other than that, we keep enjoying the music. The good SB experiences by
far outnumber that bad one. I promised her to keep volume sync off for
now. And she did calm down eventually :)

playing. Can the SB Radio then be used to change the song on both
units, or is it just going to play whatever is happening on the Boom in
 the other room?

Yes, the Radio, being one of the new generation of Squeezeboxes, can be
used to control what's playing on both units. In fact, the Radio can be
used to control what's playing on the Boom while something else (or
nothing, for that matter) is playing on the Radio itself..

One more question - I start the SB Boom in the bedroom and turn on
Pandora. From the Boom can I turn on the SB Radio in the other room
and have it start playing Pandora, or do I need to physically go to the
SB Radio and turn it on and sync it? If that doesn't work, can I turn
on and start playing units from the computer or iPeng iPhone app?

The Boom, being of the old generation, cannot control other players,
except for those that are already synced to it. You can manage sync
from the WebUI on a computer, or the Radio (or SB Controller or
Touch).

I am not familiar with iPeng myself, but I'm sure someone else can fill

Of course, the most common thing to do would be to connect both your PC

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Remote - Please Wait

2009-12-16 Thread Skinny

Hello!

Yes, the Controller (or SBC for SqueezeBox Controller as it is more
familiarly known on the Forum) does go into suspended mode and usually
takes a while to recover. You can disable this by going to
Settings-Advanced-Factory Test-Power management. Here you can set the
Sleep and Suspend timeout somewhat longer than default. The values are
seconds, so the maximum Suspend timeout is one hour. It's even possible
to disable Suspend altogether. Be aware that the battery will run flat
if you leave the Controller outside of the cradle with Suspend
disabled.

I'd guess most Duet users here have tweaked these settings to get the
Controller into an usable state. What you experienced and described
clearly isn't quite that.

Server performance doesn't affect this behaviour.

I'm sure you'll grow to love the SqueezeBox!

references. What I wanted to say was:

1. I would absolutely prefer buying FLAC files from music stores. But
they aren't widely available. One big reason is that 95% of iPod users
would just go What the FLAC?!

1.1 In this sense, mp3HD would make sense. Advanced users could buy it
because of the lossless audio, and maybe some because it works om my
iPod and hey, it says HD. The latter bunch would obviously be
screwed over in a way..

2. I don't see any point in anyone with even a little knowledge
maintaining their music library in mp3HD.

3. For music stores it's a format that's directly compatible with
existing mp3 players, so no one could complain about not being able to
listen to it.

Does copyright actually differentiate between lossy and lossless? The
legacy mp3 part is not CP:ed, so why should the lossless part be?

Anyway, in case they would decide to introduce unfair use stuff to the
lossless portion, there would still be the CD-DA workaround. There
would absolutely have to be a way of burning lossless - CD-DA for
mp3HD sales to make the slightest sense. And yes, I've made my fair
number of burn-rip tests to convince MYSELF (and that's well enough for
ME, thank you) that I get 1:1 lossless perfect results every time that
way. I could lose one or two samples (offset) in the process, but who
knows at what offset they were encoded originally?!

Now for the record, I don't think we need another format, since there
are better ones for both lossy and lossless purposes. I don't like
mp3HD. But if it becomes an easy way of purchasing lossless music, then
welcome as there's really nothing right now! And I don't see mp3HD
happening.

Re: [slim] mp3HD

(...)To me the value will be that this may contribute to making more
online sources of lossless content available. Sure, they will probably
price the 'HD' edition of music tracks higher (hype + money). And I
will need to convert the mp3HD to FLAC. But in this day and age, I'm so
tired of having to buy physical CDs (sometimes whole album). Just to get
a lossless edition of a single music track that interests me.

So if mp3HD in some ways contribute to lossless music beeing more
avilable online. Bring it on :)

This is a very good point, indeed! I would absolutely prefer buying
FLAC files from music stores, but this doesn't seem to catch on very
well. I guess it's just too much fuzz for tech support to teach
customers to convert their newly bought digital music into a format
that is compatible with their digital music player (into mp3 that is).

So, I'll gladly start buying mp3HD:s if they start showing up.
Converting to FLAC would be no problem for me. Anything that helps
bring us lossless music purchases is a good thing, no matter how silly
the suggested idea of carrying a 10+ MB/min lossy sounding file in your
mp3 player is. So in a way, I kind of hope this will make it into the
big time. I just don't think FLAC will be mainstream anytime soon.

For once it doesn't matter - they are both digital. Save your money for
 fat speaker cables!

I'm with you on that. Bits will be bits.

Maybe, just maybe, if you have a badly wired house (that is the outlets
are at different ground potential) and you go plugging your equipment in
these different outlets you may succumb to ground loop problems. Then
the optical toslink (aka spdiff) cable would be safer.

With you on that as well.

Just so set some of the terminology straight, no offense:)

The name of the plugs on optical cable is TosLink (something Toshiba
developed).
S/PDIF (Sony / Philips Digital Interconnect Format just describes the
protocol used to transfer audio digitally. The same data is transmitted
in both TosLink cables and coaxial ones, they are both used for S/PDIF.
An S/PDIF cable could then be either one.
