If you really wanted to make use of streaming you had to download the
stream yourself, cache it and then play from memory.

This might help a bit, indeed.

Add to that they will *hopefully* integrate the streaming sufficiently
so that it can run in the background, controlled by the music app.

At the moment I think something similar is possible, where one of the
music sites streams via Safari on the iPhone/iPod, and you can
'minimise' Safari but the stream keeps running.

Oh I see. Probably just wishful thinking that the streaming will be
integrated into the music app, although that would make sense - you can
surf and check mail while listening to local music, so why not an

squeezebox or amp remote around. Would be nice if iPeng could cope with
this, but probably hard to implement in a really 'neat' way. But super
handy if you could as a lot of audio people (ie iPeng users, gadget
fiends etc!) much prefer not to use the digital volume

I don't quite understand how that work, then? How does IRblaster
change the volume if it's fixed in SC? Is there a special plugin
menu? Does it only work with the IR remote? Anything where I can step
 in to do something?

IR Blaster allows you to input the correct IR codes so that an IR
transmitter (often called a 'bug') connected to the headphone socket on
a Squeezebox will send these codes to control another device.

You can set it up so that when you press Volume-Up or Volume-Down on
the SB3 remote, it doesn't alter the SB3 volume, but instead sends a
volume IR command to your amp.

Because you don't have 'traditional' Volume-Up or Volume-Down buttons
in the iPeng app, this functionality is lost. An alternative would be
to have an option to use such buttons instead of the volume slider, but
that doesn't fit with your design model particularly. Also, I don't
know what CLI commands would need to be sent by iPeng to mimic the V.Up
and V.Down actions, and whether they would automatically trigger the
IRRemote actions.

If someone uses an SBC with IRRemote: Is there a Volume Up/Down button
on the Controller, and does it trigger the IRRemote actions?

would come. I just don't want to make promises
on dates. As you can see, unexpected things can happen, and right now
I'm still a bit busy coping with some other issues. But one way or the
 other, it will come.

Having tried for some time to use stream.mp3 from my SC to the iPod
touch over the local wi-fi network, I have had no significant success,
mainly because the data rate of the stream pushed out by SC is
unrestricted (see bug/enhancement
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=249 for more info).

The upshot of this is that:
(a) The SC web interface gets way ahead of the actual music being
played - I played a 10-track 45 minute album, and the SC web interface
said the whole album had finished playing before the player was
half-way through the second track. This isn't due to buffering either,
because buffering results in a fairly constant 'time lag' which you can
cope with.
(b) Most of the iPod Touch players can't cope with the metadata being
pushed through at the unrestricted rate, and choke. CastCatcher (from
return7.com) turns off metadata requests for http://*:9000/stream.mp3;
URLs which helps, but then you can't look at the iPod to see which track
is playing because it is out of sync, and it crashes after the playlist
finishes playing anyway.

A side issue about the stream players is that they may not run in the
background because Apple will not allow it. This is why iPeng will be
the best solution - one app to control *and* listen to the stream.

Slim Devices say that it is the stream player which should restrict the
data rate to what it needs to play the stream, and most other stream
players (e.g. WMP) do this, but the guy who wrote CastCatcher says that
he can't restrict the incoming data rate without making the interface
with the network more complicated (dropping down to socket level). I
am guessing that all the other App Store stream players currently
suffer from the same issue. Notably they all play ShoutCast etc.
streams with no problem, which indicates that the SC implementation of
stream.mp3 is non-standard.

Roll on iPeng stream playback!

When I drill down through: Artists Tori Amos All Songs, it puts
all the Tori Amos tracks on compilations at the end, which is good, but
the other tracks are *all* listed under a heading which is the title of
*one* of her albums.

This doesn't make any sense - either album's tracks should appear under
their own album title, or they should all appear with just an All
Songs header, or no header at all. I don't have a preference, but at
the moment it looks messed up.

(I tried flushing the cache and restarting)

Definitely on 1.03 now (it says it in the help file), and yet I seem to

do I have to wait? I have done a full server rescan, and then clicked

Edited to add: Just uninstalled and re-installed and I still get the

Another thing, in the Albums list there is no cover art, just the

I would try (and I'm not saying it will work):
1. Uninstall iPeng

4. Wait for a bit while it loads the database

and see what happens...

[slim] Slow re-scan on Leopard 10.5.5 with external USB2 FAT32 hdd drive?

2008-11-27 Thread bat400

Hi,

I just upgraded my Mac Mini from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5.

I run my music library off a 400GB freecom external USB2 HDD, and on
Tiger it would scan the ~6000 FLAC tracks in about 5 minutes. Now it
takes an hour. At first I thought it was the USB2/USB1 problems that
some people have reported in Leopard, but I tried simply transferring
some files from the external to the Mini hdd and 20GB transferred in 15
mins which is about right. I tried changing the music library to those
files on the Mini hdd and they scanned at the speed I would expect.

This makes me think that Leopard is the problem, but only when scanning
my music library on the external USB2 drive.

Anyone else had similar symptoms? Would changing FAT32 to HFS+ help?
Would a firewire drive definitely be quicker?

Thanks in advance,
Al

OK, tried CastCatcher 1.3 which is advertised as compatible with
SlimServer/SqueezeCenter. Started perfectly, allowed me to enter my
own stream, but then crashed after a couple of tracks (small section of
sound repeating over and over). Posted a support request on their
forum, and to their credit they are already working on a fix.

Apparently part of the problem is that the data is sent through at a
much faster rate than the bitrate of the song (which allows for quick
buffering), but there is also much more than the usual amount of
metadata being pushed through and this overloads the software (I
think).

Have a look at this thread on their support site:
http://forums.return7.com/index.php?topic=33

Out of the ones I had tried it was the most promising, so hopefully
they'll get the crashing sorted out.
