Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS

2020-09-24 Thread cathcam

I've just rebuilt my LMS due to SSL problems on Windows 10, as discussed
in this forum,
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?111658-LMS-8-0-repository-problem/page9

and then came across this before logging off.

I posted this description of my Windows set-up in part to describe why I
would prefer not to switch to a Pi or even more general a Linux distro.

Yes, Pi's are super cheap and so is the distro etc. However, if you are
Windows literate, you can buy perfectly capable Dell Optiplex Small Form
Factor PC's for around $25. The Optiplex SFF all have an embedded
Windows license key in firmware. Even if they don't ship with a drive
you can install a small SSD, install Windows 7 and then go through
Windows 10 upgrade for free. What follows is my description from the
other forum. For wifi, we have a 130ft long home, with a full basement.
We run 3x wifi networks, 1-guest, 1-streaming, 1-approved laptops,
phones etc. I have 1x wifi extender that repeats all wifi signals in the
basement. We have LMS players in EVERY room and one on the back patio,
and one in the garage. Most of our video streaming is done via hard
wired systems.

I could indeed switch my LMS Server to Linux from Windows, but I suspect
a whole new set of problems would open up. I use 2x 2008-year ReadyNas
servers accessed from Windows via SMB, one is the primary, the other is
a backup of the primary and backs up weekly directly using rsync. The
primary is linked as a drive into LMS Windows system. The LMS Windows
system also does an incremental backup everyday of any new files in the
music/pictures/documents folder to the cloud using iDrive who allow the
backup of network drives from Windows.

I run the LMS on a 2014 Dell OptiPlex 3020 headless and access via
Remote Desktop Connection. Everything is automated. So yeah I could
switch, but I'd prefer not to.

If I can ever be of any help testing or debugging LMS on Windows, I'm
always willing...

Playing European station from the USA, we definitely get them. Listening

Overtime, I expect to see the end of the album as a concept, and thats
more worrying. As streaming services become more embedded and a way for
the media giants to maintain a profitable lock on the industry, I'd
expect them to start only releasing tracks via streaming services.

While that might be good for streaming receivers, over time those to
will become only the linked to the same streaming services, it's just a
question of time for this to play out. There are two many big companies
with deep pockets and time to play the long game.

We are already light years from the days of MusicMatch and local MP3,
through Napster and on. How long before home speaker devices will be
amazon, google, apple and a few others, with exclusive rights to
specific stream services? The new "cable tv".

I just tried this on Windows 10 latest, and it works fine.

You need to install http://gadgetsrevived.com/download-sidebar/ in order
to add support for gadgets back in. The you can download the gadget from
the wayback machine and load it in Windows 10.

However, its pretty useless to me at the resolution I run my main and
external monitors. The gadget is too small to be useable.

Probably not. Even if it was just a software update it would take a team
of 4-6 people including a PM, test, docs etc. You are looking at over
half a million dollars just for 6-months work, and that doesn't include
shipping and marketing, or ongoing maintenance. To open Sonos up to
what maybe an audience of maybe a couple of thousand potential users at
most. Of those users, how many would be additional Sonos and how many?

I certainly wouldn't be prepared to buy into the Sonos eco-system and
would rather spend my money elsewhere. If Sonos were an open platform,
it could be done outside of the Sonos company and licensed as an app, or
supported by add revenue, but then it would have already been done. You
need a business case of 3x the investment minimum to get anything off
the ground just to look at what it might cost. 10x is normal.

and yes, I used to be an Executive Director and architect/designer for
major software orgs...

For the most part, all cloud services are the same. Pull you in, lock up
your data, charge to access it, add services to maintain it.

How many companies do you know that offer the right to leave and take
your data with you? Facebook does, but its getting increasingly hard to
do, but yes, they'll zip you entire history/pictures etc. How many
others?

This is the holy grail of the VC backed software startup. Some unique
idea that can lead to huge profits by capturing the users data, either
online or in proprietary file formats on your machine. I bought 3x
copies of Adobe PDF creator over the years, but now can't use them, and
their online service only is way, way too expensive and they don't
provide any reasonable upgrade paths. There are a ton of examples like
this.

I wrote this yesterday. While I agree that music is moving to the cloud,
I do feel that it's time for the pendulum to swing back the other way.
Cloud services continue to be increasingly risky from a security
perspective. Userid/password management is getting more and more complex
and diffuse, and the "ownership" of hardware is becoming increasingly
questionable where it uses cloud services. I've had absolutely horrid
service from ring.com in the last couple of months.
https://cathcam.wordpress.com/2017/09/18/do-you-own-the-device-you-just-bought/

Home automation is so fragmented its hardly worth trying to do anything
with. Keeping in the game via some form of hardware player would still
be a good idea IMHO.

I'd also support moving to a NAS, you can set it up separately copying
your music over cleaning up tags and duplicates and then making the
switch.

I'd also recommend getting a NAS with at least 2 drives. I have a
netgear readynas nvx and put 4x 2tb drives in it. After 4 years one of
the drives started failing, I replaced and the NAS rebuilt with missing

work in the PC design/manufacturing business, and even if you had all

Those of you not involved in product design and delivery won't
understand how complex a world it is these days. At almost every turn
there is some form of consideration that you need legal and licensing
agreement with,

Just because you can build something from already available components,
hardware or software doesn't mean that once built, you can then sell the
end result. Just because, for example, you can buy a cheap DAC from a
supplier in China, doesn't mean they have the license and the rights to
sell it to you to include in another product.

In the open source software arena, just because you can get Linux,
Apache, Angular JS and a dozen other components which you can build into
an application stack, doesn't then mean you can just call it open source
and resell it with no consequences.

Getting a product to market now, even as a "community" project has all
sorts of risks, costs and due diligence. Thats why you see so many go to
crowd funding. One of my current favorites due to ship anytime is the
Dash Wireless headphones(*1), they raised over $3-million. I hope
they've taken all the required steps, otherwise all their time, effort,
design and IP could come to nothing when a company comes calling to tell
you that the software, hardware or algorithm in your product violates
their distribution, or worse patent.

So, I have no idea what happened in this instance, but can tell folks
that have never produced a product for sale, community, commodity or
otherwise, there is much more to it than you'd imagine, and then there
are people, their egos and feelings

Indeed, again from experience, as a Senior design engineer at currently
Dell but for 22-years at IBM, big companies NEVER deny anything. Why?
Because it is very hard for them to be accurate about what they are
denying. Do they know for a fact none of their employees participated in
the thing they are denying? For the most part no and once you go beyond
a couple of hundred it's to difficult and time consuming to be sure(*1).

While an employee may feel they can comment or be involved in something
as an individual, if a company denies something, you and the law would
asume they mean it and the denial covered all their employees.

This post wasn't specifically aimed at the topic of this post, just an
explanation of why what was proposed won't happen.

*1. At least as of 2013, Logitech had 9,000 employees.

I've dealt with this many times in many 25-years in senior positions for
a couple of the worlds top computer companies. There really is nothing
to be gained by speculating further here, the best thing is for those
that want to pursue something real and related to the product owned by
Logitech, is to contact them through their licensing, partner or legal
team.

One project, an emulator of a specific piece of equipment, survives to
this day 20-years later exactly because once the escalation and war of
words started, it was clearly best for everyone to withdraw from public
debate and settle the disagreement privately. As a result, a book I
co-wrote had to be recalled, and a second issue published without an
entire chapter. It was an interesting and stressful example of backdown
tactics.

All the facebooks, twitters, fora, an interweb comments in the world
won't solve this. There are potentially any number of legal issues to
overcome before building a device capable of providing the same services
as a Logitech Squeezebox, including copyright, trademark, patents etc.

Anyone involved in the original creation of the software and hardware
products and services around these products can be subject to any number
of restrictions. While we can speculate, if there are indeed legal holds
in place in relation to discussion, any one that knows risks serious
penalties if they give any real direction or answers.

Continuing to push for disclosure will likely end in "if want something
really bad, thats how you get it, really bad" category

Well the great thing about opensource is it can be fixed. While I don't
have time to learn the whole SQ infrastrcuture, I for one have some
25-years programming experience, I typically don't code in perl but can.
In a couple of years I will be retired with enough time on my hands to
give back to this great project. There are many others I'm sure.

The down side is its all too complex, which is the up side for those of
us here. We can get it to do almost anything. Unless the server and
clients are dumbed down and made much easier, it will always be a hard
sell for music aficionados. Logitech tried to dumb down the Squeeze
radio with the UAE, and we all complained... and were delighted when we
could turn them back into a Squeeze radio.

The first I'm most interested in is a SB Touch like device with quality
audio components, and a good(low noise) power supply. If you doesn't
exist by the time I retire, I might have a go, I have all the design and
manufacturing contacts...

2015-02-07 Thread cathcam

I'd planned to upgrade my server and for the last week have been
reorganizing and re-tag most of my music library. Prior to that, I
shutdown LMS 7.7.2 and removed the installation and all the config,
cache etc. I'm running LMS on a NetGear ReadyNas NVX with 4x 2TB drives

I installed the latest 7.9 nightly build, when through the set-up,
deactivated all the plugins I don't use, and added errlands BBC plugin
and a few I do use.

I restarted the LMS, and I have much better BBC than ever than I did
under 7.7.2. The BBC London stream is working, as is BBC R2, R4, and 6
Music. Best of all I'm now able to play iPlayer radio recordings. This
definitely never worked before.

I get a 128kbs AAC stream and have squeezeplay, touch, boom, radio all
synced up and working.

I'm currently streaming this

I've exchanged a bunch of email with the founder of OnAir about adding

he'll look at it.

I don't think it's quite what you were looking for, but if they add it

was really more hoping they'd get their kickstarter funded, but they
cancelled it mid-stream and its not clear quite whats going on

I'd certainly buy a few of these as backups and eventual replacements
for my Boom, Radio and touch if they fail.

err, I'd rather cut off my right arm than use iTunes. I've no idea but
some of them date back to when I did the first install of LMS using 7.4,
I've now got LMS 7.7.2 which has been running pretty well minus the
scanner problems since I installed it. Time to update.

Asides from migrating the podcasts from mysb.com, is there anything else
I should know about moving from 7.7.2 to 7.9? Where is the best place to
read up?

Thanks again for all the great help...

Excellent.

Which begs the question, prior to podcasts moving to mysqueezebox.com,
were they stored locally?

I ask because this is what started this whole thread off. I was browsing
through folders on my ReadyNas, which is where I run my LMS, and there
were hundreds of MP3 files from the podcasts I'd been listening to.

That may well explain it then... I've not updated the server in a while,

[slim] Podcast Setup/Configuration

2014-11-21 Thread cathcam

I've had my LMS running on a local ReadyNas for maybe 4+ years. Sometime
back when I installed it I setup some podcasts, all but one still
works.

So I went to add a new podcast, and delete the old one, I just can't see
how to do that!

If I go here:
http://192.168.1.3:9000/plugins/Extensions/settings/plugins/Podcast/settings/basic.html
it shows me podcasts I don't have, and doesn't show me the podcasts I
have. I'm confused... as far as I know, I've never used mysb.com

How id I set these up, and how do I change them?

I've had similar problems withe Squeezeplay on two different Windows 7
x64 laptops. One has been attached to my home theatre system and
installed for nearly 4-years without problem. The only things that get
changed are Windows Update, and the latest Avast antivirus. The other
player is on my work issued laptop, Windows 7 x64, this time protected
by McAfee. Both are only ever used on a private home network, with
either radio or mp3/music from a NetGear ReadyNAS LMS.

Both are syncronized in a ring with 4x Logitech hardware players. I
mostly only use the worklaptop as a remote when I'm sat out on the front
porch, I started it tonight, and the syncronized music started playing
on the lpatop, but the player wouldnt connect to the LMS. I had to add
security rules for both players in order to get them to work.

FYI, somethings changed in both Antivirus programs to make this happen.

So, something that was compatible with the SB Touch power supply, or a

Hmm I don't think it will work, since the actual file structure on my
RAID array is root/data/userid/media/music and on my laptop with Windows
7 C:\Users\Mark_Cathcart\Music and in the car it would be different
again. I guess I could write editor macros called laptop, car_sd, car_hd
etc. to post process. I guess what I was thinking of in my head was
creating profile driven playlists. ie somewhere on a SB, either on a SB
Touch which has an SD slot(can it write on read only?) or on the LMS, to
select a playlist and choose export to "profile" either laptop, car_sd,
car_hd etc.

But thinking about it, to export to the laptop it would have to be
laptop initiated, ie copy from the file server and change the path.

Re: [slim] How do you want to create/manage playlists ?

2012-05-24 Thread cathcam

1. What kind of device would you like to use when creating the playlists
?
- A computer
- A tablet
- A smart phone
- A Logitech Controller, Radio or Touch display
- A IR remote
- Something else

I own a Radio, Touch, Boom and use SqueezePlay, I also have an Android
controller app on a 7-inch tablet. I've not found any of these conducive
to creating long playlists from a large music selection. In fact, I
find the differences in UI between the touch, boom and radio, when you
can/can't get to the playlist etc difficult to use playlists at all, and
so I have not. Also, since I moved music from a PC to a RAID array at
the sametime I seriously started using the LMS, all my old playlists
were rendered useless as they had PC based absolute file locations ie C:
and D: etc. - Yes I know I could have edited them, but I also
reorganized my folder structure when moving.

So, I find my way here because I want to start creating playlists again
that are based on a collection of tracks from different genres, bpm
etc.

I have 3x laptops, the main one used for music has a Dell Inspiron
17inch touch screen and is actually my media center, however, it is
Windows 7 based and as of today wouldn't be that useful, even though it
does support touch screen, it would be difficult to rapidly assemble a
playlist from folders etc.

So, I guess my current choice would be traditional Windows 7 laptop with
a mouse.

2. How do you decide what should be part of a playlist ?
- By selecting the individual tracks you want to include
- By selecting the albums you want to include
- By selecting the artists you want to include
- By automatically selecting 100 tracks that matches some search
criteria (genre, ratings, ...)
- Something else

Probably individual tracks, buy having tracks presented based on
type/genre might be useful, BPM or somesuch would be more useful than
human tagging. I'd then edit, re-organize and save.

3. How do you decide which order the tracks should have in the playlist
?
- Random ordered tracks
- Random ordered albums
- Drag and drop albums to put them into the right order
- Drag and drop tracks to put them into the right order
- Something else

I'd like to drag and drop, then maybe randomize and finally move into a
specific order. ie to start the playlist I'd like to just drag and drop
them into a playlist, so if I picked 3 tracks from a single album that
would be one drag and drop; then if I wanted to split up the 3x tracks
and mix them amongst all the others in the playlist, randomize; finally
I'd want to tweak the playlist by dragging and dropping within the
playlist.

4. What's the most frustrating limitation with SBS/LMS playlist
management today ?
- That it doesn't support relative paths in playlist files which are
scanned
- That it's too hard to reorder tracks in existing playlists
- That it's too hard to create completely new playlists
- Something else

All the above. I regularly find myself trying to create a playlist on
the radio, getting 4-5 tracks into it and then managing to
delete/overwrite it somehow.

5. What kind of device would you like to use when modifying existing
playlists ?
- A computer
- A tablet
- A smart phone
- A Logitech Controller, Radio or Touch display
- A IR remote
- Something else

I'd like to be able to tweak the playlist using either a Logitech player
or a laptop.

6. What kind of modifications do you usually do on already existing
playlists ?
- Reorder tracks in the playlist
- Remove tracks, albums or artists from the playlist
- Add new tracks, albums or artists to the playlist
- Something else

I think mostly remove tracks. When I've put 30/50/100 tracks in a
playlist I'm not 100% sure of all the tracks, so I play the playlist and
then would like to remove the tracks I don't like.

Is there anything else than the above you feel is important to take into
consideration if anyone would like to improve the playlist management ?

I must admit, if the LMS server UI had somelike the dropbox web ui where
I could drag from Windows folders onto the UI, one or more than one
track and then reorder, randomize and save using the LMS server UI, that
would be great.

One thing that I'd really, really, really like is top take a playlist on
the LMS Server, and be able to export the playlist and tracks to an SD
card, harddrive etc. and have the playlist work because it uses relative
pathnames. In my case I have some 6,500 MP3 files, my media PC has an SD
card slot and USB drives, my car audio system also has an SD card slot,
and a USB hard drive port, I'd love to be able to export a playlist and
the tracks, and just plug-into the car and play...

Much of my music is acquired using the laptop I'm on now. It goes pretty
much everywhere with me, so for example, I just bought an MP3 album from
amazon. I'd like to be able to copy that folder over to my home music
collection with a playlist that starts in album order and can have
tracks re-ordered, or removed as needed on the laptop and later on via
the L

I would like to go ahead and create some playlists, although some of
what I want to achieve could be done by re-tagging the original MP3's

2012-05-21 Thread cathcam

I have all my music stored on a network attached RAID array, over 6000
tracks.

I'd like to create some playlists now, I've never much used them in the

What are people using to create playlists and save them away? I assume
something that would be Windows compatible and allow drag and drop and
then saving the playlist away... or are using something else??

Re: [slim] Dear Squeezebox, still love you

2012-05-21 Thread cathcam

I'll show my public love too.

I bought a Boom and sync'd it with a server running on a media center
Windows based laptop. Saw the potential for it, bought a readynas RAID
array and switched the server to there; put the SqueezePlay client on
the media center. So I have Squeezeplay in my mainroom downstairs, I
have a loft style striaght through house, no rooms downstairs just a big
open space. The mediacenter laptop is connected to a Bose Lifestle Home
Theatre System.

Next up I bought a Touch to attach to the BOSE Wave Radio in my Bedroom,
and a Radio for the guest bedroom and to become the portable with a
rechargeable battery. I use the boom in the garage where I do a lot of
my cycling sessions and weight training. I then bought a Netgear N6400
router and set-up 3-seperate wifi channels, including one dedicated to
music streaming...

This is now my major entertainment system, I rarely watch just TV/cable.

My wants.
It would have been great to have a quality home theatre system, similar
to the Bose that would have hosted the Logitech Music Server with
extendable storage options, ie that could front-end a RAID array. This
would have significantly simplified the cabling setup.

I'd like a Touch that is waterproof and has a built in amp for
outdoor/deck use, that could be used with passive outdoor speakers.
Passive only because it reduces the complexity of set-up and cabling.

Like many others, I'd like to think there was a new boom coming which is
a radio with two spears for stereo, but also has SD card slot for local
playback. I'm not bothered by the lack of an FM radio. It would be good
if this new "radio/boom" had a take-away menu that you could save items
for takeaway much the same as a favorite...

Re: [slim] Problems with BBC London live stream

2012-05-21 Thread cathcam

I agree, I made debugging more complicated by trying numerous things to
get it working again, however, something created the initial problem,
which I guess was a problem with the AAC feed for that particular BBC
station. I then started changing and just confused things. Either that,
or one time when I selected the favorite I had stored on the radio
button wasn't for the iPlayer, the Squeezeplay wasn't started, and not
synced and the WMA feed was started and then when I started the
squeezeplay and it tried to sync. Whatever, my apologies.

I appreciate the clarifications and help I got here on the use of the
SqueezePlay software with the readyNAS. That helps my understanding.

So here is what I've done. Cleared the favorite for the BBC from the
server; cleared the favorite from the SB Radio.
Got the BBC London channel playing on the Squeezeplay, via the iPlayer
app running on the ReadyNas. Created a favorite on for it on the
Server.
Synced the touch, radio, boombox to the Squeezeplay and now everything
has been working for 36-hours or so.

One final question. The iPlayer app has an option for AAC > FlashAAC >
FlashMP3 > WMA - as a non-UK user, should I change this to AAC >
FlashAAC thus ensuring a WMA stream is never started and so I'll always
be able to sync, or will get nothing?

Re: [slim] Problems with BBC London live stream

2012-05-18 Thread cathcam

I'm outside the UK too, Austin TX.

I assumed there must have been a change somewhere since I've had this
setup working, since 12/2010. I first bought the ReadyNas and a Boom,
then added the Touch, then the SqueezePlay and finally a radio. They've
all worked, all synced for at least 18-months. The Squeezeplay has
always run on WIN7. It's baffling, although see below. Maybe I was using
the iPlayer app and somehow managed to change the favorite, or possibly
BBC London stopped for a brief time transmitting AAC, looking at the
options for the iPlayer app it has a selection of formats shown as AAC >
FlashAAC > FlashMP3 > WMA and does selection using preferred from left
to right.

Certainly using the mms uri posted in the above, it returns a stream
based on Windows Media Audio 9.1 48 kbps, 44 kHz, mono 1-pass CBR when
run from a Windows based browser.
I assume the is the ReadyNas server saying what you said, it can't convert to
WMA?

I've got the iPlayer app installed on the ReadyNas. Using that I can
navigate Internet Radio; iPlayer; Listen Live; BBC Local Radio; BBC
London and it plays on the Radio, checking it reports:
File Format: AAC
Bitrate: 32kbps CBR
URL:
rtmp://cp80234.live.edgefcs.net:1935?app=bGl2ZT9fZmNzX3Zob3N0PWNwODAyMz(etc...

and I've been able to sync up great, except the boom which is out in the
garage, and I'll try and connect that later. So I guess I'll be ok so
long as I start the stream via iPlayer.

Thanks again for your feedback, that helped me it at least get it going
again by forcing me to look at the stream formats...

Thanks. Hmm, I guess from that we can deduce that for what ever reason,
the BBC Radio London has stopped or converted from what ever stream it
had to WMA only now. Which would explain why all the other BBC Radio
streams worked and this one didn't.

It's interesting that the Squeezeplay can't handle WMA, since its the
only player running on a native Windows platform. I assume by
extrapolation that if I can find a stream that will work on the
Squeezeplay that I can then resync them all and it will work. Hopefully
BBC London is in some error kinda of situation and will eventually
restart.

Finally, is there a way I can test or establish what streams are
available for any given site/station? Are they listed anywhere? IS there
a discovery tool?

Yes, synced between all four and running local using the server on the
readynas.

I tried individual players and they work if not synced, thanks. Any
clues on what has stopped the synced players from working?

[slim] Problems with BBC London live stream

2012-05-17 Thread cathcam

I have a Squeezebox boom, play and touch, and the Jive/SqueezePC, all
have been working off a ReadyNas running Squeezeserver Version: 7.5.2 -
r31632 since December 2010.

My usage is 60% my local music, 40% live streaming on iplayer recordings
on BBC Radio London. Recently the livestreaming has failed. I can still
get almost any other BBC station, both local and national streamed and
all the iPlayer recordings of BBC London shows seem to work. If I paste
the URL's below into my PC browser, they stream ok so this isn't, or
doesn't seem like a BBC problem.

I get one of a couple of errors depending on how I try to stream the BBC
London station.  using my Squeezebox radio, I select Internet Radio;
then world; find a city; then europe; then United Kingdom; then London;
All stations; finally BBC Radio London, which resolves to this link
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s24849 which returns an m3u file
containing this link
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/bbclondon.asx - this generates a
an error on the Radio something to the effect of Problem: Unable to play
file type...

Looking in the server log I get
[12-05-17 14:40:36.1589] Slim::Player::Song::open (408) Error: Couldn't
create command line for wma playback for
[mms://wmlive-nonacl.bbc.net.uk/wms/england/lrlondon?BBC-UID=941db324b14fcd2fcad5bf81f1d030e8fc9c5f069050115404cf3aafd5717cdc&SSO2-UID=]

Can anyone help with this? Any ideas? I've also tried playing it live
via the iPlayer app, similar problems but a different error. The only
other error I have in my log files is as follows, are these related?

[12-05-15 16:00:44.7112] Slim::Schema::Storage::throw_exception (82)
