Re: [slim] ANNOUNCE: iPeng for iPad - Your Squeezebox Remote Gets Big

2010-12-31 Thread jimzak

Ok.

So I built the i3-based server for SBS, and it's much snappier. The
cache synchronization takes 3-4 minutes now.

However, I'm having trouble with iPeng for iPad.

When I press and hold an album cover to bring up the menu to play the
entire album (from Albums or New Music), the menu comes up, I press
Play and nothing happens.

I can do a short press on the album cover, then play any one song
perfectly and quickly.

I just can't play the entire album.

What's up with this?

OK, so the problem is probably that iPeng synchronizes it's cache each
time you start it up due to overnight changes to the database. Can you
see whether the time the progress bar is shown under Albums coincides
 with the delays?

As is true so often: upgrading to 7.6 beta would probably help, it has
an optimized albums query that is much, much faster. The problem with
the old one is that for some reason it was very inefficient in
retrieving artists together with albums which is what iPeng does.

10,000 albums is quite a number. I've seen a library with 40.000 albums
sync in around five minutes even on older server versions but that was
 using a very fast server.

Ok. I checked the status indicator under Albums and sure enough it
correlates with the unresponsiveness of the app.

However, perhaps I was inpatient and may have turned the iPad off or it
turned itself off during the sync process. I timed it this morning at 8
minutes instead of the estimates above. However, waiting 8 minutes for
the first use FEELS like an hour.

I'm tempted to get a faster server, maybe one with an i3 processor.
Any other ideas?

I guess I don't have to sync every night especially if it's going to
affect iPeng and I don't really put new music in every day. I can just
rescan manually when I add music.

Re: [slim] ANNOUNCE: iPeng for iPad - Your Squeezebox Remote Gets Big

2010-12-22 Thread jimzak

So what's the secret to the first use of iPeng each day?

The first time I turn on iPeng it takes 15-30 minutes for it's UI to
become responsive.

As soon as the thumbnails appear in the new music list, then the rest
of the app works well and is very responsive.

But that first use of the day is tedious. I can use my SB remote,
Squeezeplay, or the web UI during that time, but using iPeng until the
thumbnails have refreshed is an exercise in frustration.

How can I speed up that first refresh? Do I need a higher powered
server computer?

You are correct. The performance issues are related to getting the
thumbnails displayed. I just checked on that issue.

Once the thumbnails are displayed, iPeng for iPad works fine.

However, while the thumbnails are being loaded, the performance is
slow. Yes, it takes two presses for Play to work because the first
press does nothing.

Today, it does not seem to be crashing but I will turn on the crash
notification if I can find it.

Re: [slim] ANNOUNCE: iPeng for iPad - Your Squeezebox Remote Gets Big

2010-11-27 Thread jimzak

Great app.

However, I'm still having performance issues and lately, crashes.

I have 100 CDs in the new music list, and it takes a very long period
of time for the thumbnails to appear with album art. How long? That's
unclear because I haven't sat down long enough to time it. I have
checked your website regarding performance and the only think I have
not done is upgrade to 7.6 beta.

Also when I touch and hold a CD in that list, I get the menu to play
the album or add it to the playlist; however, I have to tap each
command twice to get that command done.

I just upgraded to iOS 4.2, and iPeng has started crashing quite a bit.
I will activate it from the running tasks and when I attempt to perform
a function, such as that above, it will simply disappear; however, the
icon in the iPad running taskbar is still present. By the way, I
didn't restore my apps onto 4.2; I reinstalled everything fresh, app by
app.

Anyway, I love the app. I just wish it performed better and wasn't so
crashy lately.

I really like iPeng for iPad.

However, with both iPeng for iPad and the iPhone version on the iPad, I
experience delays of up to a minute after each touch on the iPad before
the attempted action happens on my SB setup. Sometimes I have to touch

Re: [slim] Touch - exclusive to Logitech website?

2010-10-23 Thread jimzak

The Touch exclusive to the Logitech site seems to have leaked back over
to Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-930-74-Squeezebox-Touch/dp/B002LARRDA/ref=pd_ts_zgc_e_322215011_2?ie=UTF8s=electronicspf_rd_p=1269277102pf_rd_s=right-6pf_rd_t=101pf_rd_i=507846pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DERpf_rd_r=1TB969NXH5BHFNW7SJ8T

Yea, I'm sure this is old news.

Likely there was just some sort of production bottleneck?

There's certainly no advantage to buying on Amazon.com unless you get
free shipping with their Prime program.

[slim] Problem: Skipping Effect Heard During Flac Playback

2010-10-20 Thread jimzak

I was listening to some flac files I downloaded the other day from the
11 disc reissue of John Lennon's CDs.

During the Imagine CD, I thought I detected a skipping sound, identical
to a CD which is skipping slightly but continuing to play.

I thought that whoever had ripped the CDs had had a faulty CD player.

Well just now, I was playing the reissue of David Bowie's Station To
Station CD (now a multidisc set) and I heard the same glitch.

I then played the flac file that I heard skipping via Foobar2000 and
as suspected, the skipping effect was NOT present.

Any ideas on this new irritating problem?

My system is pretty well outlined in my signature.

Thanks.

Jim

I tried using the server software to save it as a favorite but couldn't

I then used the Boom that it was playing on to save it to favorites.

I cannot find the tiny little edit icon.

There's a play icon and an add to playlist icon, but that's it.

To add to favorites on the Boom, just use the right hand direction
selector to move to the right one step from the currently displayed
item of the stream, and then down one menu choice to Add to
favorites.

Re: [slim] Touch - exclusive to Logitech website?

2010-08-16 Thread jimzak

Yes. I guess that was my poorly expressed point:

1. Less availability means lower sales
2. Exclusivity means less competition (like none) and less of a break
for the consumer meaning potentially lower sales

Why do I even care?

...because I want the product line to do well so that there will be
upgrades in the future and better support.

And yes, I thought the whole point may have been posted, but I didn't
do the ritual pre-posting search of the forum.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2010-06-09 Thread jimzak

I'm running SBS on a Win XP SP3 machine with an Atom processor and 2 GB
of RAM.

I download the zip file for ACC 3.4 and then unzip it to the desktop.

I then double-click the .hta file and the application opens.

I check off the options and then hit the generate button.

It runs for sometime and then I get an error stating that Javascript is
stalled or running very slowly and that if this continues the computer
may crash.

I click continue and come back in an hour only to find that no catalog
has been generated.

Any suggestions? I have about 75,000 files.

I'd like to plug the iPeng app for the iPad.

iPeng works pretty well and purchasing it will help the author to
develop the ultimate iPad app.

Ron's correct.

Nice artwork looks decent.

The app itself is a little crude looking.

But, hey, it works. I'm glad to have it.

[slim] Another Catastrophic SB Failure

2010-04-03 Thread jimzak

Well, catastrophic for me anyway...

My Linksys WRT54GL router failed early this week.

I just got a replacement. I am using the Linksys firmware.

I have just spent 4 hours trying to get my system back up, and I can
only get one Boom playing.

I'm running the SB system in my signature.

My router has the same SSID and password as the old one.

I have set wireless security settings through many permutations. The
setting with which I get the one Boom to connect is with WPA-Personal
(TKIP).

However, the Radio, the other Boom, and the Duet report WPA2-PSK
encryption when I run the Diagnostics selection. I cannot figure out
how to make them aware of the new encryption.

Although I am a faithful SB fan, I am beginning to see why Sonos is
attractive. I have wasted a beautiful Saturday morning on something
that should take 20 mins.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

Thanks.

Okay.

So I reset the encryption on the router to WPA2-Personal (TKAP+AES).

I also set the router wireless network mode to G-only.

I could then connect the two Booms, but the Duet and the Radio
stubbornly refuse to connect to the music library or MySqueezebox.com.

Am I getting warmer?

Can someone just give me their settings for this router?

Re: [slim] Another Catastrophic SB Failure

2010-04-03 Thread jimzak

The two WRT54GL routers are the same router and the same revision 1.1.

I oould connect my two laptops wirelessly and a desktop via wired
Ethernet without a problem.

I have abandoned the Linksys router and gone to an older NetGear
WGT624.

It does not support WPA2, only WPA.

I have been able to connect two Booms and the Radio. I cannot seem to
get the Duet to connect. The diagnostics on the remote refers to the
security mode as WPA2 despite a factory reset of the remote.

Ideas?

Thanks.

DUH!

Put that in extra bold print.

I can only blame myself.

I believe that I accidentally left the old router plugged in and this
produced interfering RF which completely frelled my day.

My apologies to my good ol' SB equipment and to Logitech.

My system is now back up with the new router.

With 72k+ files on my system, I would have to install WHS to have a
Sonos system. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense if everything

I'm a Windows guy, too, but I don't see a problem with Apple much.

My question is why run SBS on the latest version of Windows if it
adequately runs on practically nothing.

Do most of you folks share your work computer with SBS or do you have a
dedicated server computer in a closet somewhere?

If it's a dedicated computer like mine, why bother running such an
advanced OS?

Just curious.

I'm seeing similar previously reported behavior under New Music after a
rescan with 7.4.0 (and the behavior persists with 7.4.1)

The album is listed several times under New Music with 1-3 songs under

It's always the most recent CD added to the database only.

A complete rescan corrects it.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox fan, quick Sonos pro/cons?

The main thing for me is as stated by the first poster: size of music
collection.

My digital music collection is just slightly under 50,000 files right
now and growing.

My understanding is that Sonos only goes up to 45,000 music files.
Naturally I see this as a critical problem.

Re: [slim] Portable FLAC Players

2009-07-25 Thread jimzak

I have had a Cowon X5 30 GB hard drive-based playerfor sometime. It
sound good and I found a nice third party case and arm band for the gym.
However, the battery runs down quickly playing .flac. Unfortunately I
had to have it serviced for a headphone jack that became unstable and
that cost $45 plus shipping one way. Now the battery charge life is
down to about one use and I'll need to send it in for the $45 battery
change.

So I got a Sansa Fuze which is solid state. It's only 8 GB but it
takes a 16 GB microSD card to expand it to 24 GB which is nice for .flac
and very nice for .mp3. The battery life is much better and the cost of
the player is less than the service I've had to pay for the Cowon. The
sound is not quite as good but it's smaller and the user interface is
better. I have actually transcoded a lot of .flac to .mp3 for the
player and have about 1000 songs on it.

Cowon is a nice piece of kit but the battery change issues on all their
devices holds me back. If I was going to get another Cowon, I might get
the 32 GB O2 flash-based player which accepts expansion SD cards, but
I'd have to prepare myself for the inevitable expensive battery change.

[slim] File Deficit after Reloading SqueezeCenter

2009-06-13 Thread jimzak

My Vista SqueezeCenter server is a slim-profile, energy efficient HP
machine in my homerun closet.

Its nearly sole use is to serve my music files to 2 Booms and a Duet.

However, over the past month it has started to lock up more and more
frequently.

So yesterday I rolled it back via the Windows restore function by a
month. However, it continued to lock up so I uninstalled and
reinstalled SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 or whatever the latest release is.

I also moved all the music off the C-drive onto one of the 2 external
hard drives prior to the roll-back. I have about a terrabyte of .flac
files on those hard drives now.

However, I noticed that the song or file count in SqueezeCenter
decreased by 6000-7000 files. I checked the folder that SqueezeCenter
scans and it contains valid shortcuts to all the music and yes, I did a
total rescan when I reinstalled SC.

I browsed to the folders in question via SC also. So clearly SC is
recognizing the folders in question:

F:\music
K:\music
K:\music3

I did a file count in the folders in question and came up with over
40,000 but there are graphics files, some .cue files, and some .log
files as well as a few others.

current file count per SqueezeCenter: 32,000+
current file count per Windows explorer: 40,000+
file count per SqueezeCenter prior to reinstall: 42,000+

Was the pre-reinstall file count erroneous and contributing to the
unstable behavior?

Most of my music files are .flac but there are also .mp3 and .ape
files.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Well, I decided to answer my own question:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=r2dc31r_KbedOT-GSU_gT3woutput=html

That page shows all the files and their distribution and totals.

Apparently (?) SC was reading all the non-music files and counting them
(?) and this may have resulted in the system instability I was seeing
(?).

Interesting.

[slim] last.fm - a few questions

2009-06-07 Thread jimzak

1. So far, I've had to reconfigure my last.fm settings every time I
reboot my Squeezecenter server (Vista). Is that behavior expected?
Currently I have to reconfigure SqueezeNetwork and Squeezecenter (latest
release version) every time I reboot the machine.

2. When I play My Radio Station on a Squeezebox device, what exactly
am I playing? Is it one of my playlists from last.fm or is it an
assembly of artists I play from last.fm or???

3. If there is a detailed how-to on configuring last.fm for

Whatever I've cobbled together seems to be working.

I would have liked some step by step directions.

[slim] last.fm setup

2009-04-19 Thread jimzak

Okay.

Is there an exact procedure for setting up one's last.fm account to be
scrobbled by SqueezeCenter detailed somewhere?

Here's what I have done, yet my last.fm account is not being
scrobbled:

1. I setup a last.fm account on the last.fm website (zzzoneDOTnet)
2. I went to www.squeezenetwork.com and setup each of my players (a
duet and two booms) to send data to my last.fm account (I did not check
the box to the left of my account on the last.fm tab of the
squeezenetwork.com page). On that tab it now says zzzonedotnet
(Authorized for Last.fm Radio)
3. I also installed the Audioscrobbler plugin to my SqeezeCenter
computer (Vista) but I'm not sure if that is necessary. It does not
seem to recognize SqeezeCenter as a player.

When I go to my last.fm account under settings applications, it
indicates that Logitech SqueezeNetwork has access to my account.

Still, no scrobbling is happening.

What critical step have I omitted?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] last.fm setup

2009-04-19 Thread jimzak

Okay.

I couldn't wait for someone to help me.

I finally found the SlimScrobbler plugin and installed it in the
plugins folder.

I then stopped and restarted SqueezeCenter 7.3.2.

I then went to the settings panel and to the players tab.

I selected the last.fm audioscrobbler setting from the dropdown and
configured each player to send data to last.fm.

Scrobbling commenced.

Surely there must be a step-by-step somewhere for this procedure?

[slim] Unable to listen to Live365

2009-04-06 Thread jimzak

Starting today, I am unable to tune into Live365.

The station in question is one of my favorites and has been that way
for several months.

I can hear the station by listening on the Live365 web player.

I logged into my SqueezeNetwork account and checked the login for the
station and logged in again.

I also rebooted my router and the machine on which SqueezeCenter is
installed.

I am getting the following audio message when I attempt to tune in:

8018 Your session is invalid. Please verify that you are logged in
properly and try listening again

I get the same error on my 2 Booms and a Duet.

Any ideas on how to handle this issue?

I have made no changes to my Squeezebox setup recently. Other internet
radio stations play fine.

Setup: Windows Vista SP1 with Squeezecenter 7.3.2, Linksys WRT-54GL
router

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Unable to listen to Live365

2009-04-06 Thread jimzak

Unclear what my solution was.

I deleted the station which happened to be a favorite on SqueezeNetwork
as well as on SqueezeCenter.

SqueezeCenter crashed at some point, and I restarted it.

I deleted the Live365 login info from SqueezeNetwork and added it back
in...no changes.

Anyway it's working now.

Whatever. It only took me an hour to iron out this weird bug.

Re: [slim] Synchronised players randomly stop playing

Although I do not use playlists, the same thing has happened to me.

The players would not restart until unplugged and plugged them both
back in.

[slim] No Sound from Duet and Boom

2008-12-14 Thread jimzak

Suddenly while listening to music this morning, the sound went out on
both my Boom and Duet which were synchronized with the 7.3 upgrade
since yesterday.

I have rebooted the server computer and Squeezecenter appears to be
working normally (Vista SP1 with Windows firewall)

The display on both the Boom and the Duet remote both indicate that
music should be playing (time ticking off the track, volume control
adjusts, CD art displayed, etc.) but there is NO SOUND from either.

I rebooted the router too (Linksys WRT54GL running the Tomato
firmware).

I even de-synchronized the players. No happiness there either.

I will be music-LESS until someone gives me an idea of what to do.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Re: [slim] No Sound from Duet and Boom

2008-12-14 Thread jimzak

I unplugged the Duet receiver and plugged it back in. I was then able
to start the music up.

I then tried the Boom. There was no sound until I unplugged it and
plugged it back in.

Although I now have then de-synced, at least I have music.

Any theories or fixes? Should I grab the latest build of firmware?
Anyone else seeing this behavior.

It was truly painful to lose the music.

Jim

[slim] Small Amplifier for Duet

2008-10-05 Thread jimzak

Hi.

I got another Duet just before the Boom was released.

I would like to set up a small amplifier in my office with a couple of
smaller speakers with the new Duet.

What would folks recommend for this setup?

Naturally I don't want to spend a lot of money ($400 for sure). Super
hi-fi is NOT needed or wanted for my crappy music.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter - Not Starting

2008-09-14 Thread jimzak

When I was using Comodo Personal Firewall, I had the same problem
installing Squeezecenter.

Interestingly, I could not get SC to start until I UNINSTALLED the
firewall.

I would first turn off your firewall and see if SC starts. If no luck
with that, then UNINSTALL the firewall.

Sames goes for antivirus.

I'm sorry you have to go through this mess. It seems like there should
be a FAQ for various known problematic software conflicts.

I just ordered the Duet yesterday.

I already have one Duet. This one is quite a bit cheaper.

I don't have speakers or an amp for it, but I will start the process of
getting one soon.
