Re: [slim] Love my squeezeboxes
People are always quick to complain, or moan - so positive threads are a nice change! Like others, SBs of various sorts have changed my musical life totally. It's a winning combination of excellent sound quality, great value and extreme convenience. The range of devices mean most bases are covered - from standalone players like the Boom (which is the one that gets used every day in our house), to "high end" kit like the TP (and the Touch . . ). I can't be the only one thinking this thread has run its course, can I? Can't everyone agree that people's needs/wants are different? I seem to infer from MrSinatra's comments that I shouldn't want to listen to any other Squeeze device since I've got a Transporter - after all everything else would be inferior. However, had the Radio been available when I bought my Boom for the kitchen I would have gone for the Radio since stereo imaging when I'm cooking is not high on my list of priorities; decent enough sound to let me hear my music is all I was after. Visitors who are really impressed with my Squeeze setup - sound quality, convenience etc - glaze over when the talk turns to networks, ripping and tagging. "I think I'll stick to playing CDs" is the usual response - and this from people who are (otherwise) intelligent and well able to cope, but just don't want the "hassle". For computer literate types who like tinkering with stuff anyway, it's no big deal. But a consumer product that demands a committment like this is never going to hit the mainstream. This is probably why the Touch can play from USB etc. It's moving the traditional Squeeze goalposts, but is the only way Logitech will grow the business. Re: [slim] Squeezebox over mains network?
A point to watch out for is the speed of the devices. There are two "standards" - 200 (sometimes called AV), and a slower 85 (often called turbo). I understand both types can co-exist on a "mains network", but an 85 will only see other 85 devices, and a 200AV other 200AV devices (so you could have two independent networks going . . .). The faster standard works ok for video (YMMV!!) so there seems little point in going for the slower speed unless you absolutely know for sure you'll never need it! Both work fine for audio BTW. I do LP rips onto a Macbook and then transfer the wav files to a desktop for editing and on to the server, so a fast a network as possible is very desireable to avoid long file transfer times, so I went for the AV devices after proving the concept with a couple of slower, cheaper units that I found going for silly prices at Maplins. I have intermittant problems with the Real Jazz stream. Sometimes my Boom display just says "file not found", yet when I try it the next day - after making no changes whatsoever to any settings - it works again. Also like Mike, accessing through Staff Picks, has a higher success rate . . (though not flawless, for me at any rate). [slim] Scrobbling RadioIO adverts to Last.FM?
I listen a lot to the Real Jazz stream from Radio IO, and the tracks dutifully get scrobbled [what a lovely word this is!] to Last.FM. The only problem is that the adverts and sponsors' messages get listed too. Now I know that I can buy a "Soundpass" for commercial-free listening, but I'm too tight to do this. Is there a way to block "tracks" from showing up on Last.FM. Apart from not wanting "Pepsi Throwup" and "Webex" in my track listing, the kids's High School Musical tracks don't exactly add to the street-cred :o) Any ideas? Yes - Slim Devices have transformed my listening habits like other posters have mentioned. The ease of access to every track, and the search functions and random play/playlists has opened up my music collection in ways I'd have never thought possible. Having successfully networked music from my Mac prompted me to get a dedicated server to properly network the family's laptops and desktops, and provide backups etc. I've DVD rips on the server now, so the next thing will be a media streamer to plug into the AV system. I've another 7.2 album art issue: Sometimes after a rescan a few thumbnails in SC are wrong - the wrong cover's been picked up (a different cover.jpg from a different folder). However, the full size image file is right, and the controller displays all art correctly. It's just the SC thumbnails that exhibit this behaviour. However nice the controller is to use - and it is! - taking WiFi out of the equation for controlling it is a definite plus for the Classic, and having the display to confirm the choices you make is good for inexperienced squeezeboxers. Re: [slim] Passionato classical music downloads
Items from Universal/Decca are MP3 only, other labels - mainly Chandos/Naxos/EMI are MP3 and FLAC. I downloaded some items today - not entirely painless: the site was slow, and using Opera on a Mac [someone has to] I couldn't download albums as an entirety as you're supposed to be able to do, just track by track. The tagging isn't bad, but needed tweaking to my preferred format. No cover art is included with the download, as it is with Linn for instance, but most albums have a cover image showing on the web page that you can drag 'n drop into the right folder. I haven't played the files yet, but hope for good things. Re: [slim] Report on powerline ethernet (five weeks later)
Well - I can add my tuppence-worth to the throng of satisified powerline users (Maplin 4-port switches in my case). My lounge SB3 is wireless - but is only 15 feet from the router in the next room, with a glass door in between. The SBR however is much further away in the kitchen, and powerline connection is flawless (even with one end plugged into a power strip). The controller however is an issue, since the wireless signal in the kitchen is fairly flakey; but as I leave my laptop on the kitchen table for most of the time (which doesn't have wireless issues, and have just discovered Moose - what a great little program this is!) - it doesn't really matter. I use the controller mostly with the SB3, which is too far away from my favourite chair to have the display readable. It seems to me that if your house isn't already CAT-5'd, then powerline is the way to go unless your wireless is really sorted. [slim] New Slim Website
Ok, so it's a bit off topic for these forums (fora?) - but come on guys, get your CSS right for us Opera using people (on a Mac)! In the forum pages the width expands or contracts with the browser - the main menu bar slides under the SD logo if the window's too narrow. On the main site though, with fixed width pages, the bar doesn't move and the last item - About Us - wraps underneath. Firefox on a Mac's OK; haven't tried IE on a PC yet - but I guess that's what you designed it on (or for) in the first place. I know I'm probably in a very big minority here, but in my day job I manage a University website, and we do lots of cross-browser/cross-platform testing . . . . But the site's got a new, fresh look - and that's good :o) Bob +---+ |Filename: OperaScreenSnapz002.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4978| +---+ -- morris_minor morris_minor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46962 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Integrated Homeplug?
Just a thought: would it be possible to integrate homeplug technology into Squeezebox devices? You'd then have a choice of three ways to connect: wireless, direct ethernet, and homeplug. And homeplug really is "plug and play" :o) Bob -- morris_minor Living Room: SB3/SBC > Sonifex RB DAC1 > Musical Fidelity X10v3 > Sudgen Headmaster > Sennheiser HD 595 Kitchen: SBR > Sony Minisystem [via Homeplug ethernet] Michell Gyrodec SE DC [Tecnoarm, Goldring 1042] > Graham Slee Era V Gold Pioneer DV565 universal player, Yamaha DSPAX750SE, Kef Cresta 30 (fronts), Tannoy Profile 633 (rears) Mac Mini [1.83GHz, 2Gb], Iomega Minimax 500Gb, LaCie Ethernet BigDisk 1TB, D-Link DSL604+, M-Audio Transit USB, Audiolab 8000A, Monitor Audio M2s morris_minor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46627 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Duet and Homeplug - first impressions
Have just installed a Duet - SBR in the kitchen. Wireless strength there is minimal, plus microwave pollution etc, so a wired solution was the only option. And some kind of homeplug device was the only way I could do this. Thanks to another post - which I can't find now - I was alerted to 4-port powerline switches from Maplin selling at less than £20 each - half the price of single "wall wart" devices. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=219368&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=homeplug&doy=20m4 The one at the server end is plugged into a 4-way mains strip, at the SBR end it's directly into the wall socket. At first there was dropout after a minute or so of playing. So I thought I'd just try wireless - and this was predictably worse. But going back to the powerline switch, all seems well now, for some reason. It's been playing continuously for over five hours without dropout. (My next move had been to plug the server end switch directly into a socket - but that would have involved a lot of sweat!). As far as the kit is concerned - the controller is a pretty neat item but I agree with other posts complaining about the scroll wheel. It needs a convex, not concave surface, and also needs some texture rather than being smooth. Moving a single step up or down needs care, as it's really easy to overshoot. But generally I'm really pleased with the functionality. The high gloss finish looks good but shows finger marks very easily. I'd also like the charging cradle (or SBC) to indicate that charging is taking place. Mobile phones, dect phones etc have a little charging icon on the screen. It's not a big issue - but the first time I charged it I didn't know if it was working until I turned the controller on. What the controller does make easy is internet radio - an area of SB I'd so far neglected. Last night I was surfing the airwaves on the SB3 from my armchair.
