Re: [slim] Love my squeezeboxes

2010-01-15 Thread morris_minor

People are always quick to complain, or moan - so positive threads are a
nice change!

Like others, SBs of various sorts have changed my musical life totally.
It's a winning combination of excellent sound quality, great value and
extreme convenience.

The range of devices mean most bases are covered - from standalone
players like the Boom (which is the one that gets used every day in our
house), to "high end" kit like the TP (and the Touch . . ).

Brilliant stuff!

Re: [slim] Official iPhone/iPod Remote App?

Neither of my two controllers gets half as much use as iPeng. For me,
this was the killer app that steered me towards the iPhone in the first
place; it even made up for the iPhone's crap camera (after the old N95 .

The latest update to iPeng was a big improvement, too. Thanks Pippin!

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-10 Thread morris_minor

I can't be the only one thinking this thread has run its course, can I?

Can't everyone agree that people's needs/wants are different? I seem to
infer from MrSinatra's comments that I shouldn't want to listen to any
other Squeeze device since I've got a Transporter - after all everything
else would be inferior.

However, had the Radio been available when I bought my Boom for the
kitchen I would have gone for the Radio since stereo imaging when I'm
cooking is not high on my list of priorities; decent enough sound to let
me hear my music is all I was after.

If you think I, and others who have/want a Radio silly - then fine.
Let's agree to differ and move on - PLEASE!

I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head here.

Visitors who are really impressed with my Squeeze setup - sound
quality, convenience etc - glaze over when the talk turns to networks,
ripping and tagging. "I think I'll stick to playing CDs" is the usual
response - and this from people who are (otherwise) intelligent and well
able to cope, but just don't want the "hassle". For computer literate
types who like tinkering with stuff anyway, it's no big deal. But a
consumer product that demands a committment like this is never going to
hit the mainstream.

This is probably why the Touch can play from USB etc. It's moving the
traditional Squeeze goalposts, but is the only way Logitech will grow
the business. Us "early adopters" will just have to hope the goalposts
don't move to a different pitch entirely.

If you read this Matrix, you should choose the Radio, Boom or Touch if
"You already own a Squeezebox Duet and want to add more zones."

Wouldn't it be more sensible to omit the word "Duet" in this sentence,
and then add it to the Duet column as well?

For someone new to Squeezeboxes, it could be inferred that you get a
Radio, Boom or Touch only after you already have a Duet - and as we know
the Duet is certainly not the easiest device to set up (for a lot of
people), and a negative experience of the Duet will put people off from
trying other products.

Perhaps I'm being ultra-picky about this :-/

Re: [slim] Squeezebox over mains network?

2009-08-22 Thread morris_minor

A point to watch out for is the speed of the devices. There are two
"standards" - 200 (sometimes called AV), and a slower 85 (often called
turbo).

I understand both types can co-exist on a "mains network", but an 85
will only see other 85 devices, and a 200AV other 200AV devices (so you
could have two independent networks going . . .).

The faster standard works ok for video (YMMV!!) so there seems little
point in going for the slower speed unless you absolutely know for sure
you'll never need it! Both work fine for audio BTW.

I do LP rips onto a Macbook and then transfer the wav files to a
desktop for editing and on to the server, so a fast a network as
possible is very desireable to avoid long file transfer times, so I went
for the AV devices after proving the concept with a couple of slower,
cheaper units that I found going for silly prices at Maplins.

Hi Frank,

I'm getting an error when trying to connect to the database from a
Vista pc (and I have installed the MySQL 3.51 driver).

I get error 3716: Safety settings on this computer prohibit accessing

My music library is on a WHS machine, and I've mapped the Music share
on the Vista pc. I can't see how to allow ACC through the Vista pc's
firewall (if that is the issue, of course).

I have Moose running on the same machine, and that has no problems
connecting.

Any ideas??

Many thanks,

A "Mail-on-Sunday" newspaper piece about the ex-EMI pressing plant in
Hayes said:

"You might imagine that in a world where new music is routinely
downloaded off the internet - and in 95 per cent of cases, illegally -
paying for something as old-fashioned as a record in a cardboard sleeve
would be the last thing any groovy kid would want to do.

In fact, though, the opposite is true. Owning the vinyl product of your
favourite band has become a badge of honour, the ultimate proof of
serious fandom. Any old lightweight can nick music online. But to pay
for an actual record buys you the thing that matters - and has always
mattered - more than anything else in rock: authenticity."

Re: [slim] Off Topic - Large basement - audio options

2009-08-13 Thread morris_minor

With a Squeezebox frame of mind, how about a Classic or Duet for the
home theatre and a Boom in the bar and pool zones? Sychronised or not;
no additional wiring . .

Of course this does imply a network and many, many hours of ripping :O/

Thanks I'll try 7.4 when it's out of beta. I'm reluctant to go to 7.3.x

I have intermittant problems with the Real Jazz stream. Sometimes my
Boom display just says "file not found", yet when I try it the next day
- after making no changes whatsoever to any settings - it works again.
Also like Mike, accessing through Staff Picks, has a higher success rate
. . (though not flawless, for me at any rate).

Plus I have the problem of the remote host resetting the connection -
which is a major reason why my wife hasn't accepted internet radio. I've
tried with a playlist of several instances of a station, set to repeat,
but it nearly always just stops after a random period of time between a
couple of minutes and, say half an hour. I just restart it, but my
wife's given up using it . . .

[slim] Scrobbling RadioIO adverts to Last.FM?

2009-07-07 Thread morris_minor

I listen a lot to the Real Jazz stream from Radio IO, and the tracks
dutifully get scrobbled [what a lovely word this is!] to Last.FM.

The only problem is that the adverts and sponsors' messages get listed
too. Now I know that I can buy a "Soundpass" for commercial-free
listening, but I'm too tight to do this. Is there a way to block
"tracks" from showing up on Last.FM.

Apart from not wanting "Pepsi Throwup" and "Webex" in my track listing,
the kids's High School Musical tracks don't exactly add to the
street-cred :o)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob

Not only do they sting you £7k+ for the privilege, they have the nerve
to charge £250+ to install it - which is not optional. I suppose by
insisting on installing it themselves they get over all the niggly
problems us Squeeze-owners have to deal with ourselves.

But think of all the CDs/downloads you could buy for seven

The SB3 (Classic) is definitely the "entry" player to get
(notwithstanding the forthcoming Touch - which may be best to avoid for
a bit as there are bound to be some issues with it), as it is as near
plug'n'play as the Squeezebox experience gets . . .

Thanks to all who've responded!

I think I will get an HDX1000 as it seems to do what I need - I think I
can put up with a rubbish interface (been using Windows for years, after
all).

I agree with Pale Blue Ego that audio-only streamers are going to face
a tough time as video-plus-everything-else kit get more sorted.

But my shiny new Transporter's on its way to me now, so my audio
colours are truly nailed to the Squeezebox mast (apart from vinyl of
course...).

[slim] Experiences with HDX1000 NMT unit?

2009-06-14 Thread morris_minor

Sorry, not a Squeeze-issue at all!

I'm thinking of buying an HDX1000 media streamer for movies, photos and
web content (audio is already taken care of!).

Searching forums produces the usual split between those who love it
(does what it says on the box etc), and those who are spitting with
anger about to lob the box into the nearest skip - or eBay it. I suspect
the truth lies somewhere inbetween.

Do any of you squeeze-folk have experiences you feel like sharing to
help me decide?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Like most (all?) posting here I have to say that not only are
Squeezeboxes the best value audio products **ever**, but they've
revolutionised the way we listen to music. I've never bought as much
music in such a short space of time since going networked with SD gear,
since listening to it is so easy, so flexible, with such high quality
sound.

It's also the only product/topic that's encouraged me to contribute to
a forum!

Anyway - good luck Sean.

Re: [slim] Thank You Slimdevices / Logitech & Community

2009-01-18 Thread morris_minor

Yes - Slim Devices have transformed my listening habits like other
posters have mentioned. The ease of access to every track, and the
search functions and random play/playlists has opened up my music
collection in ways I'd have never thought possible.

Having successfully networked music from my Mac prompted me to get a
dedicated server to properly network the family's laptops and desktops,
and provide backups etc. I've DVD rips on the server now, so the next
thing will be a media streamer to plug into the AV system. The ease of
setting up Squeezecenter with my first SB3 has a lot to answer for . .
. The smile just keeps getting wider :o)

(http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-av-push-piggy.htm ) run
lukewarm to touch. I certainly wouldn't say they get "hot" . . .

Re: [slim] enough "election" off topic discussions

2008-11-09 Thread morris_minor

One thread in fora of many thousands about an event of global
significance doesn't seem too much bear - especially when conducted
with pretty good restraint and reasoned arguments. Had it degenerated
into the mother of all flame wars it would be different.

Ignore it if you don't like it!

But my 2 pennies worth about the election result is that the
repercussions around the world could be enormous. US foreign policy
might change to one of "think first", then barge in mob-handed. The
perceived war-mongering stance of Bush is hopefully a thing of the past
- which is why Obama's victory has been so well received outside the US.
World faith in the US has been restored!

Has anyone got a Popcorn Hour? Would this be able to play DVD images or

but some confirmation (or not) from users would be helpful.

[Yes - silly name - on a par with "Boom"!]

Re: [slim] Artwork (sort of) missing in 7.2

2008-10-06 Thread morris_minor

I've another 7.2 album art issue:

Sometimes after a rescan a few thumbnails in SC are wrong - the wrong
cover's been picked up (a different cover.jpg from a different folder).
However, the full size image file is right, and the controller displays
all art correctly. It's just the SC thumbnails that exhibit this
behaviour.

Another rescan often fixes the original errors, but sometimes
introduces new ones. Clearing the browser cache has no effect, either.

[slim] Mystery of the Disappearing Playlists

2008-09-30 Thread morris_minor

Here's a problem I've sorted, but might be of use to others.

For some reason SC stopped responding and on restarting I was
confronted with the setup wizard. Annoying, but easily remedied. After
a total rescan my playlists had disappeared.

Checking the server verified the files were still there. Another
playlist scan: SC reported scanning around 25 playlists, but after the
scan no playlists were visible in SC. Saving a new playlist worked
fine.

Copying my backed up playlists over the original files and doing a
rescan restored them to their former glory - including one that hadn't
been included in the backup.

I've no idea what the problem was, but do know that keeping a backup
was really useful.

I agree. Discontinuing the Classic would be a mistake. However nice the
controller is to use - and it is! - taking WiFi out of the equation for
controlling it is a definite plus for the Classic, and having the
display to confirm the choices you make is good for inexperienced
squeezeboxers. The receiver definitely has its place in the lineup, but
if one product had to be dropped I'd vote for the receiver anytime.
Hopefully Slim/Logi can continue with both . . .

Re: [slim] Passionato classical music downloads

2008-09-12 Thread morris_minor

Items from Universal/Decca are MP3 only, other labels - mainly
Chandos/Naxos/EMI are MP3 and FLAC.

I downloaded some items today - not entirely painless: the site was
slow, and using Opera on a Mac [someone has to] I couldn't download
albums as an entirety as you're supposed to be able to do, just track
by track. The tagging isn't bad, but needed tweaking to my preferred
format. No cover art is included with the download, as it is with Linn
for instance, but most albums have a cover image showing on the web
page that you can drag 'n drop into the right folder.

I haven't played the files yet, but hope for good things. For lovers of
20th Century British music the inclusion of large chunks of the Chandos
and Naxos catalogues is really welcome.

SBR = Squeezebox Receiver, SBC = Squeezebox Controller

SBR+SBC = Squeezebox Duet.

I use my controller mostly with the SB3 in the living room [for the
ultimate couch potato experience!] as wireless strength in my kitchen
is marginal. But I keep a laptop almost permanently on the kitchen
table, so control my receiver from that (the laptop's wireless
reception is better than the controllers).

I think the consensus round here is to use ethernet if you have the
choice since it is **generally** more reliable than wireless. That
said, if your wireless connection has been rock solid . . .

But if an extra ethernet socket is a low- (or no-) cost option then you
will have the choice of which to use. And you can always use the wi-fi

Squeezeboxes are never actually "off" unless disconnected from the

Re: [slim] Report on powerline ethernet (five weeks later)

2008-06-26 Thread morris_minor

Well - I can add my tuppence-worth to the throng of satisified powerline
users (Maplin 4-port switches in my case). My lounge SB3 is wireless -
but is only 15 feet from the router in the next room, with a glass door
in between. The SBR however is much further away in the kitchen, and
powerline connection is flawless (even with one end plugged into a
power strip).

The controller however is an issue, since the wireless signal in the
kitchen is fairly flakey; but as I leave my laptop on the kitchen table
for most of the time (which doesn't have wireless issues, and have just
discovered Moose - what a great little program this is!) - it doesn't
really matter.

I use the controller mostly with the SB3, which is too far away from my
favourite chair to have the display readable.

It seems to me that if your house isn't already CAT-5'd, then powerline
is the way to go unless your wireless is really sorted.

Question: Which user category do you belong to most ?

- The geek
- The audiophile
- The structured music lover
- Massmarket Joe
- Other (None of the above fits me, see wiki page before choosing
  this)

As a confirmed Squeezophile with a collection that's 50% "classical",
40% jazz, 10% world - pop - "other", the tagging limitations are the
only downside to a great system. Having to pull out a CD booklet to
find some essential piece of trivia about a jazz date goes against the
whole ethos of the system. I happily spin vinyl - and even buy new and
"previously cherished" discs still, but CDs as a product are so last
century.

In terms of the poll - well: 30% geek, 20% audiophile, 50% music
lover.

For me the term audiophile implies a love of quality sound, not
necessarily a love of music. . . .

On the controller you'll find a menu item "choose player". Here you can

Yes! My SB3 power connector is flaky, too. I need to set it "just
right" for it to work OK without re-booting etc. But since I rarely
touch it I haven't really found it a problem. But it's interesting to
know the fault is not just with mine . . .

This aside I love my squeezeboxes - apart from the sound quality (which
is top notch IMO) they've altered the way I listen to music - for the
better!

The SB3 and SBR use different DACs, and you should head over to the
audiophile forum to find out if one's better than the other. For most
people, the performance will be equally good! The main difference
between the two is the lack of display on the Receiver, and the
pricing. Eventually the Receiver and Controller will be sold
separately, so you can add cheaper Receivers to your system without
doubling up on Controllers. One controller can control any number of
SB3/SBR/Transporters since it connects to Squeezecenter, not the
devices themselves.

Since I don't use my controller on multiple wireless networks I'll have
to pass on that one . . .

My Maplin switches worked without configuration as well; just plugged
one into my router, the other into the SBR. All works great - even
sitting next to a switched-on microwave.

But, as can be seen from other threads (eg.

can, and sometimes do, have problems.

For UK viewers, who remembers the BBC micro? 32 Kb of RAM. Wow! At Uni
I prgrammed an ICL mainframe with punched cards. . . .

But . . . the SB architecture is it's own worst enemy. The openness,
the flexibility are its strengths. But it relies on so many things
outside its own control. Wireless networks, any networks can screw up
big time. My Duet and SB3 sometimes need total resets (but not often).
I'm happy - kind of - to cope with this, but Joe Public would never
stand for it.

This is cutting edge (if not bleeding edge) technology, and not ready
for general consumption IMO.

SB is the best thing that's happened to my listening since I can store
all those nasty little silver discs and just play vinyl and FLACS. But
there's a few more steps needed for the non-tech.

My living room SB feeds into a Sugden Headmaster pre-amp - via a Sonifex
dac and Musical Fidelity X10v3 tube buffer - for quality 'phone
listening, but the tape out from this goes to my home cinema amp, where
general listening is mostly done with [shock] "7-channel stereo"

The kitchen Duet is 2 channel.

[slim] New Slim Website

2008-04-29 Thread morris_minor

Ok, so it's a bit off topic for these forums (fora?) - but come on guys,
get your CSS right for us Opera using people (on a Mac)!

In the forum pages the width expands or contracts with the browser -
the main menu bar slides under the SD logo if the window's too narrow.
On the main site though, with fixed width pages, the bar doesn't move
and the last item - About Us - wraps underneath. Firefox on a Mac's OK;
haven't tried IE on a PC yet - but I guess that's what you designed it
on (or for) in the first place.

I know I'm probably in a very big minority here, but in my day job I
manage a University website, and we do lots of
cross-browser/cross-platform testing . . . .

But the site's got a new, fresh look - and that's good :o)

[slim] Duet and Homeplug - first impressions

2008-04-20 Thread morris_minor

Have just installed a Duet - SBR in the kitchen. Wireless strength there
is minimal, plus microwave pollution etc, so a wired solution was the
only option. And some kind of homeplug device was the only way I could
do this.

Thanks to another post - which I can't find now - I was alerted to
4-port powerline switches from Maplin selling at less than £20 each -
half the price of single "wall wart" devices.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=219368&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=homeplug&doy=20m4

The one at the server end is plugged into a 4-way mains strip, at the
SBR end it's directly into the wall socket. At first there was dropout
after a minute or so of playing. So I thought I'd just try wireless -
and this was predictably worse. But going back to the powerline switch,
all seems well now, for some reason. It's been playing continuously for
over five hours without dropout. (My next move had been to plug the
server end switch directly into a socket - but that would have involved
a lot of sweat!).

As far as the kit is concerned - the controller is a pretty neat item
but I agree with other posts complaining about the scroll wheel. It
needs a convex, not concave surface, and also needs some texture rather
than being smooth. Moving a single step up or down needs care, as it's
really easy to overshoot. But generally I'm really pleased with the
functionality. The high gloss finish looks good but shows finger marks
very easily. I'd also like the charging cradle (or SBC) to indicate
that charging is taking place. Mobile phones, dect phones etc have a
little charging icon on the screen. It's not a big issue - but the
first time I charged it I didn't know if it was working until I turned
the controller on.

What the controller does make easy is internet radio - an area of SB
I'd so far neglected. Last night I was surfing the airwaves on the SB3
from my armchair. Great!
