Well, back in the 70s I did obtain a BSc in Electronic Engineering and,
although I spent most of my working years doing IT, I have always
dabbled in electronics

Anyway, as a quick fix while I find suitable caps, I removed the
offending (de)coupling cap, lifted one leg of the decoupling cap
between op amp o/p and the output sockets, and connected the dac output
to this second decoupling cap. Thus, I've eliminated the op amp from
the circuit, but retained one of the original decoupling caps and the
passive low pass filter. I repeated the same mod on the other
channel.

My SB3 is now back to full working order! :)

Re: [slim] SB3 Left channel has gone very quiet.

2011-01-01 Thread peterbell

Thanks for the pointer. I did manage to find that myself, after I
posted it helps if I spell Xilinx correctly!

Unfortunately, none of that improved matters.

However, further searches led me to this posting about a very similar
problem: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71914

With the help of the schematic, and the suggestions there, I am
convinced that it is the coupling capacitor on the output from the dac
(C7 on SB2, C20 on SB3) which has failed. The rms voltage on the
output from the cap is an order of 10 lower than the voltage from the
dac.

So, looking at replacing the coupling caps on both channels, I came
across the modifying SB3 thread, here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19822

>From this, it seems that I would do well to eliminate the output driver
op-amp and replace the coupling caps with better quality devices. If I
can obtain the better spec'ed dac here in Philipines, I may well change
that too.

If all goes well, I can then apply the same mods to my other SB3.

[slim] SB3 Left channel has gone very quiet.

2011-01-01 Thread peterbell

I have two SB3s. I've just noticed that the left channel on one of them
has become very quiet (almost, but not quite, silent - perhaps 40dB
down?). This affects both the analogue (phono) outputs and the
headphone jack - I've not tried the s/pdif output yet, but I'm guessing
that the digital output will be okay. My other SB3 is fine.

To the best of my knowledge there has never been a balance control in
SB/SBS, so I presume that this must be a hardware failure.

Am I likely to be able to find/fix anything if I dismantle the SB? Is
it possible that this is caused by a flash failure (I updated to f/w
135/SBS7.6 just a couple of days ago)?

I brought the units with me from the UK to Philippines when I emigrated
three years ago. I am not aware of any marketing/sales/service activity
for the Squeeze devices in the Philippines.

Yes, as I wrote, I did wonder whether the firmware makes a difference.
However, I am unsure whether SN imposes a specific version of firmware,

I note that the 'progress bar' in the web interface whilst playing a

The other point to consider is that if the value of your CDs is not
included in the value of contents for which you pay insurance premiums,
and the loss adjuster becomes aware that you had CDs, the insurance
company may decide that you were under-insured to the value of the CDs
and adjust the total of any payout against the items for which you
claim.

Oh yes, of course there is loss of information (and addition of false
information) in the anologue domain but I would guess, unless there are
some very serious non-linearities, the effect is seldom as obvious as
the infidelities which could be introduced in the digital domain.

However, it may be worth, as you suggest, setting up an ABX test so
that I can judge for myself.

I guess that, from a purist point of view, having elected to use FLAC
coding for all my music, it goes against the grain to, knowingly,
introduce unneccessary digital processing.

This is a shame, because it does seem to me that, for the analogue
outputs, it ought to be possible to adjust the analogue gain in
response to the replaygain value and maintain a lossless reproduction.

I guess that I'll leave Volume Adjustment turned off on my main system,
but leave it turned on on the other SB which is used for
casual/background listening.

[slim] Where/how is gain adjustment carried out?

2006-10-08 Thread peterbell

I have all of my CDs encoded using FLAC. I recently added replaygain
tags to the files.

My first question is:

Does the gain adjustment get performed at the Server or the player?

Secondly:
Obviously, if the first answer is 'Server', then the adjustment is
carried out in the digital domain. However, if the adjustment is
performed at the player, is this done in the digital or the analogue
domain?

If the adjustment is performed in the digital domain, then it must be a
'lossy' process and not conducive to good perfect reproduction of the
original waveform. However, if the adjustment were to be carried out
in the analogue domain, then it would probably not be detrimental to
the sound.

[slim] Elapsed time jumps backwards just before end of song

2006-09-13 Thread peterbell

Is it just me ... or perhaps this is a known bug which I haven't picked
up on.

Im running Slimserver 6.31, originally on Win XP, but latterly on a
Qnap (therefore with f/w 55 in the SB V3), using FLAC encoding
exclusively.

Quite frequently I notice that the elapsed time displayed in the Now
Playing screen saver jumps backwards to a much lower value (but not
zero) shortly before the end of a song/track. This jump backwards is
evident in both the digits and the graphical display.

I have not yet determined any consistent pattern to the occurrence of
this feature.

I would check the Bugzilla lists, but I don't appear to be able to log
in!
