Well this is so incredibly stupid but I'm posting it here for my future
self because I'm likely to forget this by the next time it happens.

My weird recurring kitchen radio problem seems to be caused by the fact
that the power plug does not fit tight in the outlet. After several
weeks of door slamming on the same wall with the outlet, the wall plug
gets to where it's barely plugged in and because it is under a cabinet
it's not easy to see that it's loose. I'm surprised anything worked at
all given how it was.

I might need to retire my geek beanie.

Re: [slim] Networking help

2016-11-27 Thread MeSue

Purely by chance, this seems to be resolved. My theory is that it was
all caused by a bad ethernet port on the one and only radio I had
connected by Ethernet. I moved some Radios around to different areas of
the house, and all has been working great since then. No changes to the
server software at all.

Longer explanation: During hurricane Matthew I had unplugged some
radios. When we got power back and I plugged them back in, the radio in
my kitchen which was connected by ethernet got into a weird state where
it was showing both on squeezebox.com and the local server, but I could
not get it to play anything. I could navigate menus and control it from
iPeng, but no sound would come out. Finally I just disconnected it and
set it aside. I put a different Radio in its place and after a couple
weeks I realized I wasn't having problems like I had been before. Later,
I decided to try the faulty Radio in another location on wifi, and it
has been working fine like that.

So so perhaps the Ethernet port was starting to fail prior to the
hurricane and all the power surges from that were the final nail in the
coffin. We had it unplugged from power, but left it connected to
Ethernet via power line adapter during the hurricane. The power line
adapter was not affected. It's still in use.

Yeah, sorry... it's Windows Home Server 2010. It seems like every couple
of years it all goes kerflukey and needs a clean install. Since removing
MusicIP it was good all week until today when I had to restart the
service.

I'll keep the RaspberryPi in mind, but since the server performs a lot
of other functions in our household, I'd just as soon keep it on there.

I know about HP Microservers thanks. We run a couple. Hence the question
as to what it was running. More than likely it's the OS combined with
LMS that's the issue.

I gather you are running LMS on an HP Proliant Microserver but you don't
say anywhere what platform. The sort of issues you are reporting suggest
problems with LMS itself as they get resolved (temporarily) by a
reboot.

Have you considered moving LMS (not the music files themselves) to a
Raspberry Pi 3 running PiCorePlayer ? In the US you can pick one up for
$30-40.
It is very simple and you don't even need to uninstall or switch off LMS
on the HP while you get it all going. You just need to be able to point
the Pi at the HP's files via SMB/CIFS or (if you want to be esoteric)
NFS.

I read your blog posts. LMS on a Pi is easily within your ability even
if you have zero Linux skills as it is all configured via a browser. You
would need to connect the Pi by ethernet to your network - wifi works
but

Lots have moved from LMS on a NAS to a LMS on a Pi + NAS and found that
all their Spotify connection problems have gone with the added benefit
that they can now easily upgrade LMS without waiting for the NAS
manufacturers to release a new compatible package.

No. I forgot all about that. I will next time. The players are 1 Touch,

Too soon to be meaningful, but yesterday I switched don't stop the music
to use LastMix instead of Music IP and haven't had problems since.

I've always had problems with any kind of automatic mixes that involve
MIP, although it works fine if I manually trigger a mix. Thought taking
it out of the equation was worth trying.

Getting much better mixes, too.

had any problems with the networking. Network reach doesn't seem any
worse than with my previous devices, although I have invested in an Asus

(many) other routers I've used.

I thought I would post a follow-up here. I had a couple of good months
of book sales, so I decided to just throw money at the problem since I
don't really have the time or brain power to try and figure out this
stuff anymore. :p I got the Netgear Tri-Band router AC3200 and have had
it up for almost a week. It has the range to cover our property very
well, and reaches out into the outbuilding where my husband works
without any range extender. I have got all my players back to static IPs
and everything is much more stable.

I do still have a problem where every couple of days a Squeezebox player
will go silent, often right in the middle of a song. I'm not sure why
this is happening. Sometimes I can get it going again by pressing
skip/off/on and such until it starts playing again. But usually it is
faster just to restart LMS on the server and lose my playlist.

Same meter doesn't necessarily mean the same circuit. Where I live one
meter serves a typical 2 circuit house, some houses have 3 circuits or
more on a single meter. Sounds like the circuit where your router is
located and your outbuilding are definitely two different circuits (and
makes sense).

Re: [slim] Networking help

2016-06-15 Thread MeSue

Hi again,

Sorry I haven't had time to write up a better explanation with diagrams
and all. :(

Unfortunately Ethernet out to the other building isn't workable. Our
house is all wood pine tongue and groove cabin-like construction and
running ethernet through the walls is out of the question. Walls,
ceiling floors, are all wood and he won't drill through it. The up-side
is wireless signal transmits pretty good through walls. It's just the
outbuilding that is on the fringes.

I'm really not sure why powerline doesn't work because they are on the
same meter box.

Is there something else I can try that will work between the two
identical routers that isn't using WDS?

Does the Airport Express extend Wifi from a 3rd party router or it is
supposed to replace the primary router handing the WAN connection? I
noticed it only has 2 ethernet ports.

This Alfa router we are using now is such garbage! Keeps dropping the
internet connection. I am desperate to get it out of the equation.

Unfortunately I have to use different SSID, and the extender (Netgear
WN2500RP) is connected via wireless to a Netgear WNDR 3400 which in turn
connects to my router via ethernet (provided by isp) which is doing all
the work (dhcp).

Works perfectly.

This is exactly what I do. the 2nd wifi router has all settings to hand
out IP addresses turned off. And it is connected via ethernet back to
my main router (note that the "2nd wifi router" is connected to ethernet
by pluging the cable into one of the "regular" ethernet slots on the

would typically route the plug coming from the modem itself; this is
sometimes labeled "internet" on the router, indicating a connection to
modem that provides the internet connection). I also use same SSID and

Re: [slim] Networking help

It would still help if you could provide some form of diagram of your
setup.

Also, is the wifi router located in the house as near as possible to the
office/outbuilding? (to get the best chance of getting a strong enough
signal out there)

Any way to run an ethernet cable to the office?

I've had reasonable success running two wireless routers. Primary one
has all the main settings enabled (e.g., configured to provide the
dynamic addressing, with a range of dynamic addresses, and left a
separate range of addresses which I use form Static addressing). The
second router is at the other end of the house - the two are connected
together via wired ethernet. The second router does NOT perform the
dynamic address allocation, it is only a wifi hotspot. I did, however,
configure both wifi routers to use the same SSID and password.
Generally a device will connect to one or the other - but "roaming"
isn't handled particularly well - if I move to the other end of the
house, a device will tend to stay connected to the one it originally
connected to, even though the second device now has a much stronger
signal). If you're OK having two separate wireless networks, you could
configure the two hotspots with separate SSIDs and passwords, and then
just connect a particular device to one or the other. BUT make sure
they are not BOTH trying to provide the dynamic IP configuration.

When the two buildings dont got the same electric meter - forget about
connecting these builings with Powerline. You may connect the two
routers over powerline in one building - but they didnt really work over
electric meters.

That pretty much told me - no gateway or dns is set when you do the
static thing and a massive false configuration - thats why i asked for
facts.

- ip
- subnet
- gateway
- dns

Thanks for the responses. I will run these ideas by him and look into

don't work out there. Anytime I suggest power line for out there, he
refuses to even consider it.

Re: [slim] Networking help

2016-06-13 Thread epoch1970

I would avoid the WDS thing and trying to extend wifi coverage though
wifi itself. Ethernet or powerline are a much better solution.

My advice would be to replace the APs with 2 Airport Express APs. If you
have a mac, win PC or an iThing in the house you can manage them.
The current model is not very recent, it's not AC but dual radio G/N and
sufficient for uncompressed audio or HD video streaming. You can have
them at discount price, refurb price is ~50 USD which makes it a good
value, plus they offer Airplay.

I have setup a 4-AE + powerline system in a large home, and it "just
works". One SSID, one password, and most clients I have tested seem
happy to roam from one AP to an other when they are moved around the
house (with an iPad a running video stream, stream will pause for about
1 sec and restart when changing AP.)
In this setup one of the 4 AEs is set to router mode. It works fine in
this role too, but firewalling settings are minimal and it doesn't
manage a local DNS service, only mDNS.

I have fiddled with OpenWRT and Tomato in the past, all my attempts at
setting up multiple APs (to be fair: using similar but not identical
devices) have failed. Fiddly, and when it "worked" it never provided a
convincing advantage over a single AP setup. The Airport Express is
simplistic, but in multiple AP mode, it's simply night and day.

[slim] Networking help

2016-06-12 Thread MeSue

Hello old friends!

I haven't popped in in ages. Busy, busy. Also because I was perfectly
happy in my squeezebox bubble... up until around last September. That
was when my husband and I each got new Microsoft Surface Pro tablet
computers. Nice machines... We like them. But this has wrecked havoc on
our network.

The problem started because my husband's "office" is in a separate
outbuilding about 30 steps from the main house. With his old laptop he
always got enough of a signal out there to do his work, but with the
SP3, he could not maintain a stable connection.

Everything always worked great with our old Buffalo router with an
upgraded antenna and tomato firmware. But we took the plunge and got a
new 5g AC router thinking it would give us better range. It didn't. :(
Long story short, we took the old Buffalo router and set up both routers
using WDS with the new Alfa router as the primary, and the Buffalo as
the client. Unfortunately it only works with 2 different SSIDs and no
security on the extension node (Buffalo).

Since then it has been trouble trouble trouble. I hate the firmware on
the Alfa (based on OpenWRT, I think). If I set static IPs for the
devices thru the router, they can't get internet. Any large uploads send
the network into a tizzy, even causing rebuffering in the squeezeboxes
playing local music. I am constantly having to reboot the router, the
modem, players, and LMS. Every time I turn on a Squeezebox there's a
50% chance it won't play anything until I go through the whole rebooting
rigmarole. Sometimes one of the players will be happily playing along
for 20 or 30 minutes and then just stop. Then I find out it has randomly
latched on to the unsecured extension SSID, or disappeared off the
network altogether.

I tried swapping the primary and extension routers and that didn't work
out either. Then I found a used buffalo router just like our old one
with tomato already installed on it. I thought, "perfect! WDS should
work with
both routers identical!" I snatched it up, but no joy. The only way I
can get WDS Working between them is with no security at all. So that's
no good.

Im losing my mind here! I hate silence! But I've reached my limit on
what to do. I'm not a networking wiz. Piled on top of that is my husband
is a cheapskate who doesn't give two hoots about the squeezeboxes. As
far as he's concerned I should just use a Bluetooth speaker with my
phone or iPad.

What can I do? The squeezeboxes were rock solid before we got this crap
router.

Ok. Like this?

Or like this?

Ideally what you want is everything on one subnet. So you don't want
two routers. If #1 above is correct, then it sounds like you don't
need a router in this room. If you need to connect multiple wired PCs
and devices then you only need a network switch in this room. (If
there's only a single device, you could just run an ethernet cable from
the D-Link located in the kitchen.) If #2 is correct then you want to
use the D-Link only as a wireless access point and not a router. To do
that:

- Use the Linksys as your DHCP server. Disable the DHCP server in the
D-Link.

- Connect the D-Link to the Linksys by connecting between one its LAN
ports (not the WLAN or 'Internet' port) to one of the LAN ports on the
Linksys.

The D-Link should end up with a 192.168.0.x address and everything
attached to it should also. You may want to give the Linksys a static
IP address in its configuration so that you can always find it easily.
If the D-Link is 192.168.0.1, try using 192.168.0.2 for the Linksys,
which will most likely be outside of the DHCP address pool being
assigned dynamically.

[slim] Networking

2010-05-01 Thread Spooler111

I have been a SB3 user for several years with few issues until today
when I had to reset my router. Now I have problem. I have searched
forums and found similar issues but either I don't fully understand the
proper fix or the issue isn't exactly the same. Anyway here is the
issue:

I have a cable modem connected to a wireless Dlink router (basically
set up as an access point). This Dlink is connected to an SB3 as well
as another router (Linksys). The Linksys is connected to my computer
and a second SB3. The second SB3 works fine, but the one connected to
the Dlink is not working. When I try to set up the non functional SB3 I
can get an ip address, but it will not connect to the network. FYI the
ip address of the Dlink is 192.168.0.1. The Linksys is 192.168.1.1
(this router has DHCP turned off).

What is providing the route from your 192.168.1/24 to your 192.168.0/24

Most home users have only a single subnet in the house.

Re: [slim] Networking

2010-05-01 Thread JJZolx

What are you trying to accomplish with the two routers? Sounds like an
attempt at isolating the wifi network for security purposes.

In your configuration (assuming default router setups), devices on the
.1 network should be able to contact those on the .0 network with no
problem. But those on the .0 network will be blocked from contacting
anything on the .1 network. Devices on the .0 network would be
considered outside by the Linksys router, and treated as though they
were on the Internet and potentially hostile.

If the Linksys permits it, you could perhaps open up a hole in the
router's firewall permitting all traffic to/from the IP address of the
SB3 on .0 network. That will allow the SB3 to 'see' the internal
network, but I doubt that Squeezebox/Server discovery will work across
the subnets. Most likely, you'd have to configure the server address
manually on the SB3.

If you're not trying some kind of funky security thing with the two
routers, then you could just eliminate the Linksys and place everything
on the D-Link. If you really must used two devices for logistical
reasons, then the thing you might do is place the D-Link behind the
Linksys and truly configure the D-Link as a wireless access point,
where it and its wifi devices are on the same subnet as devices
connected to the Linksys.

Code:

  cable_modem
  |-- Linksys
  |-- D-Link
  |~~ SB3
  |-- SB3
  |-- Computer

Re: [slim] Networking

Its a physical location issue.

The cable line comes into the house in the utility room which is not
conducive to setting up a wireless router. This is also where the
network distribution cables converge. As a result, I need to take the
output from the cable modem in two directions - one goes to my kitchen
where the first SB is. The other goes to the wireless router in another
room which in turn is connected to my computer and a second SB.

Re: [slim] Networking challenge

2008-09-13 Thread MeSue

Hi folks. I thought I would report back our results after trying the
Netgear powerline equipment we already had. It works, but it wasn't
without some struggles.

The kit I had came with 1 ethernet bridge (wired to router) and 1
wireless range extender. At some point I had bought another Ethernet
bridge.

Originally we planned to use the wireless range extender out in the
shed so he could use his laptop out there, but upon plugging it in we
discovered it was completely dead (power light didn't come on).

So plan b was to use the other Ethernet bridge on the shed side. That
worked in our initial test just plugging the house one into the most
convenient place for a test. But that was with an Ethernet cable
running across the room, so we had to rearrange the way some things
were plugged in for permanent placement.

Then, when we had it plugged in where we thought would be best, he kept
getting rebuffering on the Squeezebox. ARG. Next hubby went to every
receptacle on that circuit, testing and replacing them. No good...
still rebuffering. So then we rearranged some more plugs in the room so
we could try it on yet another outlet. And that one works!

But we had to unhook the network printer for the test since all the
ports on my router are filled. So for that, we dug out an old Netgear
hub that we still had hanging around and put the printer and powerline
bridge on that. Everything still works with the hub... whew!

So now he is happily listening to my old Squeezebox 2 in his shop with
his old gigantic speakers that I made him remove from the living room
entertainment center and the old receiver that he bought in 1987 and
would not let me get rid of. :-) And we did not have to buy anything.

[slim] Networking challenge

2008-09-04 Thread MeSue

Now that I have a Boom, I would like to give my SB2 to hubby. There is
an all-metal building on our property that he uses as a workshop where
he would like to use it. However, I fear getting Ethernet out there is
going to be a challenge. It's not finished in this picture, but you can
get the idea of what I'm talking about:
http://picasaweb.google.com/sue.chastain/RussSWorkshopBuilding#5079669562153442098

The building is about 20-30 paces from the back of the house, and
probably twice that distance from where our router is situated. I'm
wondering if powerline adapters would work for bringing Ethernet out
there? Or is there a better solution?

My only word of caution is don't buy cheap ones. I found that the

Re: [slim] Networking challenge

2008-09-04 Thread andynormancx

I would personally recommend not going with the Netgears. Though I
normally like Netgear's kit their 200M powerline adapters are a bad
choice.

The first issue with them is that they don't interoperate with other
200M adapters. So you get tied into other Netgear adapters if you want
to add to the network.

The second issue is that in my experience at least they don't cope well
with noisy mains. I bought a set and they were completely hopeless or my
admittedly very noisy mains. I had to replace them with Devolo's which
work much much better than the Netgears on my mains. Which reminds me,
must ebay the Netgears sometime...

Even though the electrical is already run, perhaps now would be a good
time to dig the trench up again and toss some conduit and CAT6 in
there? Assuming it wasn't done long ago, you should see exactly where
it was dug up and grass wouldn't have really estblished itself yet.
This way, if he were to set up a PC in there for some reason, it would
be easy to do with a hub/switch.

It's a bummer you guys didn't think of it before.

It's not so much that we didn't think of it... but... it's complicated.
For one thing, the router is is on the opposite side of the house from
where the electric conduit had to be run. Also, the house has wood for
the interior walls, ceiling, and floor plus wood siding on the outside,
and hubby HATES to put holes in the wood for anything.

Oh, how I have longed for a house that was wired for Ethernet, but I'm
stuck here for the foreseeable future, especially now that hubby has
the uber shed. Don't get me wrong... I love all the wood in our
country home, but it makes any kind of wiring a pain in the rear. Thank

The SB2 has the advantage of being able to replace the stock antenna.
So I wonder if it would be possible to attach a directional antenna
outside of the building run inside to the SB2 over coax. I've never
done anything like this, so maybe someone else could comment on whether
or not it's feasible.

Could this be done purely on the receiving end, pointing the antenna in
the general direction of the house, or would it need directional
antennas at both ends?

Can an antenna signal be run over coax for a distance of 20-30 feet or
so?

well, if powerline doesn't do it for you, maybe get a linksys WRT54GL,
install tomato on it, and put it into remote access point mode. Run
cat5 from linksys to squeezebox. Put the antennas in a shed window and
you should be good to go. (note - this is with the linksys in the
shed)

Alternately, you could put the linksys into repeater mode and put it
close to that side of the house. The tomato firmware lets you control
which antenna does what so you can put a directional on one and point
that at the shed. (so this is with the linksys in the house.)

I would go with a Parabolic antenna such as:

It is a whole lot cheaper and has 1 more dB of gain. It is also easier
to line up a parabolic for beginners over flat panels due to the built
in structure pointer. You would only need the Parabolic on one end. The
Parabolic can also be installed in either the horizontal or vertical
plane to best match your router.

Depending on what type of high gain antenna your wireless router has IE
its radiation pattern and take-off angle due to gain, you might actually
be better off going back to a standard antenna. In most vertical
antennas, as the gain figure increases so does the take off angle. I
like using the parabolic antennas with the new routers that have three
antennas.

[slim] Networking question: wireless gateway without connection to the internet

2008-08-10 Thread justNigel

Hi All,

Forgive me if this is a stupid question... my networking knowledge is
limited, to say the least.

I have a Duet and a Qnap 109II singing (figuratively and literally)
happily along, connected to a Thomson Speedtouch 585 wireless gateway.
(PS: huge thanks to flipflip for all the work on SSOTS. With QPKG,
install was easy enough for me.)

I'm moving to Scotland soon (from Canada) (for love, to answer your
next question). I know we'll have a wireless network where I'll be
living, but my concern is that the Duet won't work as well as it does
now. So my crazy idea is to bring the gateway with me and have it
running just for the Duet/NAS, but without connecting the whole rig to
the internet.

Obviously, I won't get internet radio and updates will involve moving
files from my laptop. I'm also not sure how (if) I could connect my
laptop to two networks simultaneously (internet on one; SqueezeCenter
on the other), but losing the convenience of always-on PC SqueezeCenter
isn't a deal breaker.

So, can this work? Do any of the puzzle pieces require a live
connection to the internet? If the Duet doesn't work nicely with the
existing wireless, would it be simpler to just try and make the
Speedtouch the main gateway?

Thanks in advance for reading this far and any help you can offer. (And
job offers for an experienced carpenter in Edinburgh would be welcome as
well.)

Nigel

Other than internet based services, nothing requires an internet
connection, so I wouldn't expect a problem there. However, I don't see
any reason you couldn't just wire the Thomson unit to your network once
you get to Scotland and use it as a second AP (or disable whatever's
there) if it works better with the Duet.

Oh and don't forget the voltage difference!

to provide a local routing function as I described.

If you were able to swap the Server Mac and your own Mac over so that
the server had the wireless connection and your Mac was connected to it
over ethernet sharing the wireless. With your wireless configured as it
was previously then it should allow the SB3 to see the music and you to
control it via a web interface from your own Mac. However, there are
limitations in that config which probably won't affect you at the
moment but may if you add further devices.

It would be better long term if you can have both Macs wired to the
router. Connecting the SB3 by wireless would be OK.

[slim] Networking Assistance - SB3 and SC7

2008-03-16 Thread Symbiotic

I'm reconfiguring my network at home to allow for a new server, which
I'm using for my media and SC7.

The problem is, this server is using a 'shared' network connection from
my other Mac, and it seems like the SB3 can't 'see' the server.

SB3 IP is 192.168.10.4 (connected directly to WiFi router)
Primary Mac IP is 192.168.10.3 via WiFi (shares this connection with
server over ethernet)
Server Mac (running SC7) IP is 192.168.2.4 (shared connection from
Primary over ethernet)

I can't seem to get this to work, but I think it must be do-able. I
don't have WiFi in the server, nor do I want to run an ethernet cable
across the house to the router.

Any help is appreciated!

You'll want the server to be on the same subnet as the other machines,
i.e. a 192.168.10.x IP.

Hmmm...I suppose that isn't possible using OS X's built in network
connection sharing is it? OS X appears to automatically assign the
192.168.2.4 address, rather than a 192.168.10.x address (which is what
the router would assign...)

I would think that you could either change the Mac to use 10, or change

Re: [slim] Networking Assistance - SB3 and SC7

2008-03-16 Thread Zaragon

If I have this right you have a router which connects to a Mac over
wifi. From the back of this Mac you have an ethernet connection which
you have connected to the server Mac.

The SB3 is connected by ethernet to the router.

The subnet mask value is important here. I am going to assume that it
is 255.255.255.0 as this is most likely the default with the addresses
you have given.

To make this work will require a couple of things. But first a
question. Can the server Mac communicate with the ethernet?

If it can then I am going to presume that the non server Mac has had
routing configured on it (in Windows terms it might be called Internet
connection sharing).

In this case it would be necessary to tell the router that network
192.168.10.0 is available via 192.168.1.3 Unfortunately not many home
type routers have this capability. Even then it may not work as I
believe that the SB3 uses a broadcast to find the server and this won't
pass between networks.

An alternative would be to reconfigure the non server Mac from being a
router to being a bridge. Subnet mask again comes into this but
assuming you keep it at 255.255.255.0 then give the ethernet port on
the non server Mac and the ethernet port on the server Mac an IP
address in the 192.168.1.x range. Not one that is already in use and
not one that is within the DHCP range of the router.

With bridging configured this should work.

This isn't an easy configuration and relies on the non server Mac being
on all the time. It might be simpler to reverse the roles of the two
Macs if you can.

Instead of moving the Macs can you move the router and it's internet
connection?

Unfortunately I can't help you with OS X commands as I've never used it
and it is years since I did it on Unix.

Re: [slim] Networking Assistance - SB3 and SC7

2008-03-16 Thread Symbiotic

The Mac wont allow me to set it into a 'bridge' mode, but I can change
the router configuration. I have a Motorola WR850G, and I believe it
will allow me to specify the IP address of the router, the subnet mask,
and the default gateway. These are set, currently, to:

192.168.10.1, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.10.1 respectively.

Am I correct in assuming that since the Primary Mac wants to share its
internet connection by using 192.168.2.x for the IP - if I set the
router to use 192.168.2.x as well, then all should work properly...?

So, for example - change the router to read 192.168.2.1, 255.255.255.0,
192.168.2.1. change Primary Mac IP to 192.168.2.2, and hopefully the IP
address assigned to the shared connection is 192.168.2.4...?

Re: [slim] Networking question

2007-07-02 Thread egd

Now that I've had some time I've thought this through and have corrected
the issue without resorting to a single subnet - the key reason I
implemented two to begin with (which I should have mentioned at the
outset) is that the 192.168.168.x subnet provides gigabit connectivity
between all PCs and NAS devices. Changing to a single subnet would
force the 10/100 broadband router into the equation, which, if I'm not
mistaken will adversely impact network performance when copying between
two devices on the subnet etc - from memory gigabit NICS will negotiate
down to the lowest common denominator on the network, effectively
turning everything into a 10/100 network.

The wireless EOP is a Netcomm NP290W. I now have it configured to
allow wireless access to slimserver (looking forward to the N800, in
the meantime my PDA will suffice). If I'm wrong about the single
subnet performance issue I'll happily implement it.

Further thoughts/comments appreciated...

is this possible or do i need cross over cable.

Router is the sky router (netgear) and the switch i was thinking of
getting is netgear gs605.

i was wanting to do it this way is because i want to use dchp server on
the main router so i can reserve ip addresses also switch i was thinking

Yes, that's the way to do it. You don't need cross over cables.

You could also make a straight run from the basement to upstairs and
put your router there.

All I can say is that you're gaining nothing in terms of security with
that configuration. For increased security and peace of mind you'd be
better off putting a good firewall between the network and the router.
Then create firewall rules saying (for instance) that the NAS at
192.168.1.5 and the NAS at 192.168.1.6 are blocked from making outgoing
connections. Incoming is already blocked, but go ahead and make a
couple of explicit rules just to feel better.

This would be identical to your current situation - you cut off any
possibility of either outgoing or incoming connections to/from those
machines. But IMO that's a little bit over the top, since those
machines probably never even make any outgoing connections.

Your main security risk, as I see it, is that one of your PC's (laptop)

That and your own lack of network understanding. It's probably
impossible for a non expert to build a really secure network with

to be interested in your family's videos or pictures (you have backupped

[slim] Networking question

2007-04-05 Thread egd

_HISTORICAL_STATE:_ a
- I have two PCs, two NAS devices and two SB3s networked via an
unmanaged gigabit switch, all with hardcoded IPs using the
  192.168.168.x range.
- The SB3s are located outside of the study and take their audio feed
from one of the NAS devices located in my study.
- Slimserver is running on one of the PCs
- The wired link between my study and SB3s is provided by three
  Ethernet over Power connectors.
- Each of my PCs is connected to the Internet via a broadband router
linked to a 2nd NIC with IP assigned by the router's DHCP and takes
  the form of 192.168.1.x
- The 192.168.168.x range is not exposed to the Internet and I want
  to keep it that way

Everything works nicely.

_DESIRED_FUTURE_STATE:_
- Same as above, except I want to add a WAP in the lounge so that we
can surf etc from our laptop
- If technically feasible I also want to add a 2nd WAP in the lounge
to interact with the SB3 via a Nokia N800 or something similar

*_Current_state:_*
To solve point 1 above I did the following (after consulting with the
vendor):

- purchased a Wireless Ethernet over Power connector and installed in
  lounge
- connected broadband router to gigabit switch
- configured wireless Ethernet over Power connector to accept IP from
broadband router's DHCP. Broadband router assigns 192.168.1.2 to the
  wireless Ethernet over Power connector

Outcome is that Internet is now accessible from the Lounge, however,
devices in the the 192.168.168.x network become inaccessible to one
another as soon as the wireless connectivity is established ie it
pretty much looks like I can have the one or the other operational, but
not both.

I have connected the broadband router to the switch with and without an
Ethernet over Power connector in between - both options give me an
active WAP.

Any ideas as to how to get the two to coexist (the vendor specifically
said I could run both networks on the same power line infrastructure)?

Finally, apologies if my networking terminology is incorrect/laughable
- I've learned through trail and error.

[slim] networking novice considering switch to wired from wireless due to dropouts

2006-08-17 Thread markmarz

Hi,

New user of Squeezebox, running latest released (6.3.1) Slimserver on a
new HP laptop (dv5220us, 120gb hd, 1gb ram, lightly loaded) serving
mostly .flac files over wireless. The .flac files reside on a WD 250gb
network drive.

Occasional dropouts have turned me towards a wired solution. Got a
Transporter on order and will not be keeping it if I can't find a
dropout solution. But I'm confused on basic network setup. I know just
enough about networks to hook up a wireless router using large diagrams
and lots of little words.

Suppose I run a wire between the router and my laptop, and another wire
between the laptop and the Squeezebox. There is already a wire between
the router and the WD network drive. So then everything between the
network drive and the Squeezebox will be wired. I assume I'll then have
to tell the Squeezebox to hook up to my wired ethernet network rather
than wireless.

Once that's done, how does the Squeezebox pull from the internet for
(say) internet radio? Or Squeeze Network? Will it be necessary to
'switch' the Squeezebox between wired wireless to hear .flac vs
internet?

Thanks!
Mark M.

[slim] Networking issue with Linksys WET54g bridge

2005-11-13 Thread Michael Amster
I have two SB's - an SBg and an SB2. I decided that I wanted my
wireless to be single mode-G rather than mixed mode to work on
stability. To do so, I hauled out an old WET54g bridge to work with my
WAP54g access point. I have another WET54g in another part of the house
feeding a small LAN in my home office and it works fine.

My settings and network is the following:

1. WAP54g running HyperWAP/1.0 with WEP128 and G-mode only. MAC
filtering on. Running on Channel 6.
2. WET54g in home office running Linksys 2.06 and connected to local
switch with 2-3 machines

3. WET54g in kitchen with SB1 connected on ethernet
4. SB2 in living room on wireless G
5. Linux server running SlimServer 6.2 on FC4

So, the problem is that the SB1 seems to knock the WET54g off the
network. I setup the SB1 to connect on ethernet. I can get the DHCP
address, but when it tries to contact my SlimServer, it drops the
wireless signal. This is reproducible each time I hold the power button
and cause a reset. Are there any thoughts about this? I could go back
to a mixed mode network and run the SB1 as wireless, but the signal
strength is only about 30% and I was hoping G-only would help with that
a bit (and some of the AP's flakiness about needing to be reset once a
week or so).

[slim] Networking Issues

2005-11-06 Thread tomryan17

I have a SB2 on my wireless network (D-Link DI-524)and it was working
fine (after I disabled my WEP). Now all of a sudden it cannot find the
slim server which is running on my P4/XP machine. I tried restarting
both the PC and the SB2 several times. I even tried disabling the
firewall to see if it was the issue, although it worked before without
the firewall disabled. This product is consuming much more of my time
than it is worth. Any ideas on setting to review for the most reliable
performance
