Re: [slim] Re: Starting slimserver in Windows
Of course, every time I update SlimServer to the latest version, it resets to LOCAL SYSTEM and I have to reset the LOG ON parameters to one that has permission to access the music share. That's kind of a bummer because half the time i forget to reset it and I have to think why Slim.exe can't access the music. Right, this is the thing FireDaemon helps with. Set and forget your command line, or tweak it to your heart's content (adding/removing debug arguments, etc.); start and stop the service easily from the FireDaemon control panel. It's a bit less of a bother all around. SBB Visit our website at http://www.ubs.com This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named. For the record, Windows services can access shares just fine. I do it all the time. You just need to set the user context of the service to one that has permission to do so. By default, services run under LOCAL SYSTEM which is usually not granted permission to any network resources. Of course, every time I update SlimServer to the latest version, it resets to LOCAL SYSTEM and I have to reset the LOG ON parameters to one that has permission to access the music share. Re: [slim] Re: Starting slimserver in Windows
The program is called "CMDOW" and can be found here: http://www.commandline.co.uk/cmdow/ It's a very neat and small command line program which can be used to start any other program specifying it's window appearance - minimized, maximized or: HIDDEN! Works perfectly, does not need any ressources, slim.exe starts faster, my Itunes gets updated and I don't have any clutter in my taskbar! Nice utility! I could see a number of uses for it on my PC. Another option is FireDaemon: http://www.firedaemon.com/ It lets you install and run any Windows app or batch file as a service, but have it run as whatever user you wish (which gets around the problem of Windows services not being able to access shares). I've been using it for quite a while and have been very happy with it. (The free version allows you to set up a single service; the paid version is unlimited.) Well - seems I finally found a solution to my problem - even though I am quite dissapointed having to rely for such a basic functionality like starting slim.exe in the background on an external tool. I've tried the solution with a shortcut as well as James was describing but I was bothered being left with a cmd box in the task bar (I've only got a 17'' screen :) I finally found a solution: The program is called "CMDOW" and can be found here: http://www.commandline.co.uk/cmdow/ It's a very neat and small command line program which can be used to start any other program specifying it's window appearance - minimized, maximized or: HIDDEN! Ah I see, Manuel was asking about the "iTunes Update" plugin, which is not the same as the "iTunes" plugin. iTunes plugin reads from iTunes, iTunes Update writes to iTunes. I remember that I exchanged some emails with someone on the list to debug it but despite the registry settings looked correct the software was returning "" as the path... So since then I enter the path where my library is (somewhere in my user profile) and my music folder which in my case is D:\iTunes. That's it. Every time I reinstall a new version of slimserver I just use the installation parameters that says that it should start automatically. I can see the service stopping and restarting during the installation. In the control panel the service is there running on automatic! Perhaps in the meantime the "automatic search for the library" has been fixed but I never bother checking again as specifying the path worked fine for me. RE: [slim] Re: Starting slimserver in Windows
Hi Michel, That is interesting, I could never get it to work as a service and notes in the Moodlogic plugin led me to believe it was not possible. Did you change the service settings at all? What version of Windows are you running? As to Manuel's original question I have a shortcut to "slim.exe --d_plugins" in my startup folder, set to start minimized. Yes you get left with a cmd box in the task bar but that's life (actually I find it quite useful bcos I like to keep an eye on iTunes Update/Slimscrobbler) I did indeed find it started far faster than slimserver.exe. RE: [slim] Re: Starting slimserver in Windows
Thanks for the feedback but given the constant dropouts I had I am not yet willing to change back to the latest build of version 6... Anyway I assume my question will be valid for V6 as well- is there anyway to start Slimserver.exe or Slim.exe silently/minimized in the background as an alternative to having to run it as a service? As mentioned previously I could not find any command line options etc. that would allow to do this. But I cannot imagine such a basic thing would not be possible given all the rest that my Slimbox allows me to do... RE: [slim] Re: Starting slimserver in Windows
Sorry Dan - I was rather vague as I did not want to start discussing my problems I had with version 6 :) I just managed to get everything up and running again with the old version. Basically what happened was: - I had permanent dropouts when playing music and that's with a signal strength of 64% - Version 6 seems to consider more tags than the previous version. All of a sudden my "browe by Artist" showed up Artists I never heared of. Keep in mind that ITunes showed everything correct. I found out that some of my MP3s had tags like "Composer" which were considered as well as "Artist". So much to version 6. At the moment I am not keen on trying it out again. Especially because it's in beta stage at the moment anyway and it did not work for me. Any ideas to my original issue of starting Slimserver?
