Re: [slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-02-06 Thread pnharrison

Inspired by Marth, I checked / refreshed the system time on my Ubuntu
server which runs Squeezecenter; (it looks like it wasn't being updated
correctly)
And this seems to have resolved the issue immediately; my SB2 + Boom
now sync perfectly.

Thanks for the help all.

Your log shows repeated reconnects from both players. Do you have some
sort of problem with your network?

To track down the sync problem you also need to enable
player.sync=debug and network.protocol.slimproto=info in the logging.

I seem to finaly have solved the problem, but thank you for helping me
out.

I changed two things, don't know which one solved the problem. First I
thought about why the clocks were not in sync, and I changed the
timezone of my router which had a different timezone then my PC.
Secondly, I left the squeezeboxes running over night. I used to have
them connected to the recievers so that they lost power while not being
used. As I said, it works fine now so those are things to concider if
experiencing sync problems.

Re: [slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-02-03 Thread Neil Sleightholm

It has stayed in sync for a nearly a whole day now. I have been doing
some reading up on VMs and time keeping is a known problem. They tend
to drop interrupts and hence the time can drift, the recommendation
seems to be to ensure they sync with a time server regularly (which I
have done now). My SB2 had lost quite a lot of time relative to the
server (~20s) and if it only goes forward in 5ms steps that might
explain why it never caught up. In an early post you will see I thought
the 7.3 upgrade fixed it, I suspect it was actually the fact that 7.3
upgraded the SB2 firmware and hence it did a resync.

I appreciate that I might be in a minority by using a VM but would it
be possible to allow the SB to reset its time at other times, for
example at power on?

Re: [slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-02-03 Thread awy

Unlikely. The clocks in the S2s are generally very stable. More likely
that the server clock is drifting; perhaps there is a problem with it
running in a VM.

The adjustment mechanism, by which SC tracks relative drift between the
SC server clock and the player clock, is deliberately slow, so as to
avoid big jumps due to short-term network congestion and similar
effects. Actually it is slow only in one direction: the biggest
positive adjustment you will see is +5ms, while it will jump as much as
necessary in the other direction, on the basis that network latency
cannot be negative :-).

So, if you reset the SC server clock, it is probably necessary to force
the player to reconnect, either by rebooting it, going through the
network connection dialogue again, or disconnecting the network link
long enough for the connection to fail.

Once you got it in sync, did it stay in sync for an extended period

2009-02-02 Thread Neil Sleightholm

awy - I have used many versions right from the early days but prior to
7.2 it was 7.1. Interesting about the clock, my server is actually
Windows 2003 VM (VMware server is the host) and I have set the option
to sync the time from the host but I am going to try letting it free
run and sync with my time server. The DHCP config gives out this server
and may be being used by the squeezeboxes but not the VM host (the VM
host is not the time server).

I'll report back what I find, thanks,

Neil

They don't really get time from anywhere. They have a free running 1kHZ
clock (jiffies) that starts at 0 on boot. SC tracks the jiffies epoch
relative it its time. It assumes that the SC host (server) time is
stable.

The problem definitely seems to be time related. I reset the server so
it was at the correct time but it took a while before the time on the

matched then playing a track was perfectly in sync. Is there some
reason why the squeezebox2 would drift away from the server time?

It does appear to be a recent problem. Previously synching SB2 to Duet
worked OK with my setup. However, I don't use the sync much. My new
Boom arrived Saturday; so in setting it up I tested the sync to an SB2
and was suprised at the lag.

Happy to capture logs for comparison when I get a moment at home, if
that would be helpful.

My setup:
SC 7.3.2, on Ubuntu Server 7.10 on a headless server (wired to router)
SB2 (wired)
SB Boom (wireless)

Re: [slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-02-01 Thread awy

Neil, what version of SC were you running before 7.2?

Thanks for the log. It is interesting. I appears to show a discrepancy
between you server's clock and SC's idea of the player's clock. The
series of adjust jiffies epoch messages shows an unusual pattern.
There is not a long enough period covered in the log to be sure, but is
appears to show that your server's clock is drifting at quite a rate,
occasionally being reset. What operating system and hardware are you
using?

If you could get another log, also with
network.protocol.slimproto=debug added to the mix, that might help to
narrow it down a bit. Also, if you could stand leaving it to play a bit
longer out of sync, perhaps across a couple of track changes, without
manually changing things then that would enable me to see some more
context.

Ben is right. The track info shows the file format, not the transmition
or streaming format. By default, when transcoding is used the highest
possible quality transcode is used, so if it can SqueezeCenter will
keep the stream lossless. The only time LAME is used is if you are
streaming to a SliMP3 which only understands MP3, you are using
http://serverip:9009/stream.mp3, or you have bitrate limiting turned

Do you have any mp3's that you could try just for diagnostic purposes?
This might help pinpoint whether or not the sync issue is due to a
difference in streaming format or transcoding that needs to happen for
your SB1. The SB1 and SB2 will both play back MP3 natively.

I have tried it with an MP3 and disabled FLAC (which I think means they
both use WAV). With the MP3 I just tried, I hear the squeezebox start
then 13s later I hear audio from the squeezebox2 but both displays show
the same time, i.e. the squeezebox2 says it is 13s in to the track
before I hear anything. If I unsync or turn off the squeezebox the
squeezebox2 behaves correctly - it starts playing immediately. I have
used synchronisation before I have never noticed this until I updated

[slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-01-25 Thread Neil Sleightholm

I have several squeezeboxes and have noticed that I get a massive delay
when trying to synchronise between squeezebox's and squeezebox2's, the
delay is a about 2-3s with the squeezebox's first. Should these 2
generations of squeezebox be able to sync?

I am using SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 and my music is flac format. Both the
squeezebox and squeezebox2 seem to be playing the music in flac format
so there isn't any transcoding going on. Both players are on wired
connections, although I also see the problem with a wireless player.

The Squeezebox (SB1) has no hardware decoder for FLAC while the SB2
does. So your SB1s are definitely playing a signal transcoded by
Squeezecenter. Unfortunately, they can't sync well.

I think it should do better than that. I've successfully synced
(sunk?) a SliMP3 and SB2 and had very good results. It could be due
to the transcoding that is required though for your case. 7.3.2 fixed
several sync and transcoding bugs I believe, so you might give that a
shot. Otherwise, check the Synchonize settings for each player in
the web interface and make sure that none of them have odd values for:

Player Start Delay (0=default)
Player Audio Delay (0=default)
Minimum Synchronization Adjustment (30=default, maybe)
Network Packet Latency (2=default, maybe)

Note that these settings are on a per-player basis so check all your players.

Great news. The original Squeezebox rev 1 cannot play FLAC directly
and the FLAC will be decoded to PCM (or wav?) and then streamed. I
think you're just conflating the file format with the stream format.
The file format is the format of the actual file being played, not the
in-transit representation.
