Re: [slim] Any new Squeezebox Devices on the horizon?

2011-10-24 Thread Bery

I'd like to see a device similar to Touch ( 96/24 playback ) but with a
display of SB3/Transporter!

+ Boom II with color touchscreen.

The analog part of Touch is quite good enough for most of consumers and
you can always add a DAC of your taste. This is most flexible solution.
Why spend money on an expensive Squeezebox i.e. Transporter?

I'd settle for any new version of the Boom, whatever the screen. I'd
have bought another, already, but I'm afraid of not being able to use
it (or my other three SB devices) at all if Logitech dumps the line
altogether and abandons the msb.com service. Not all of us use local
servers...

I'd really love to see a new Transporter. None of the current squeezebox
family members have displays that are readable from more than a few feet
away, so one has to resort to controlling them using either the
Controller or a smartphone/Ipad type device. I'd buy any new squeezebox
with a display with similar text size and contrast to the old Classic
and Transporter, especially if it kept the WordClock Input and/or added
I2S-over-HDMI (PS Audio format) output as well as 24/192 support.

I reckon that they're only interested in getting customers to buy the
Revue at the moment having spent much time cash on its RD.

Once LMS 7.7 is officially released I would think there will be some
sort of relaunch that highlights all of the added functionality (for
the Revue) that LMS brings. Once all that's out of the way then maybe
they'll update the SB range.

Here's hoping anyway

I think the Squeezbox is under-marketed and misunderstood. I think it
has the genuine potential to appeal to both the plugplay crowd with
multicolor touch screens (UI needs to be dumbed down), and to us
fiddlers.

I agree with those ho propose a Boom v2, which could become the most
popular device if priced right and with UI improvements for the PP
crowd.

Equally, I think the next Touch simply needs a revised UI as does the
server software, hiding a lot of the complexity and more plug and play.
Then there should be an expert mode (with disclaimer) that allows us old
school users to continue with our ways.

What I really miss in the SB range, personally, is an upmarket device
in the $500-1000 range (between the aging Transporter and the Touch),
something like the current Touch but with upgraded and latest gen
electronics. Anyone else feel that way?

How about something that automatically FLACs any analog source that
flows through its DA and sends it back to the server, and prompts you
to name it from the UI? I still have analog material I have not
converted because of the cumbersome factor... I can't think I am the
only one.

2011-10-19 Thread Metazargo

I simply wait for:

- A new version of the Radio with a touch screen like Touch.
- A new version of the Boom with a touch screen like Touch is nice to
have.

Will not buy another Radio of the current series.

I have one Duet, but I'm fine to use Touch for such 'hidden'
appliances. Still nice to have, a new version of a boxed receiver.

My personal wish for Radio:

- Temperature measurement In and Out
- Hygrometer In and Out

No need for a separate weather-station; one display less standing
around.

Re: [slim] Any new Squeezebox Devices on the horizon?

MacFrugal;603528 Wrote:
I was wondering if there will be any new Squeezebox products or updates
coming out this year? Something like a Boom 2 with bigger speakers or a
 larger display?

They always keep their roadmap very close to their chest until a
product is almost ready for market. What we don't know is how
successful the Squeezebox line is and whether Logitech consider it
financially viable to extend the range further. It is a pretty niche
product so that could be a major limiting factor.

The obvious move would be to extend the use of SqueezeOS (used in the
Radio and Touch) across the range together with more powerful
processors and DACs. This permits the use of the colour and touch
screens as well as native support for a broader range of file types
and at higher bit-rates which will reduce the need for the SqueezeBox
Server to transcode and/or down-sample.

Obvious developments would be:

1. Boom v2 with Radio-like colour screen
2. Duet v2 with more capable Receiver with the processing power of the
Touch and an improved Controller with a bigger screen.

I doubt they would want to make the Boom bigger, part of its attraction
is its portability and big sound from a small device.

Longer shots would be:

3. A SqueezeBox badged server - a headless mini PC or NAS offering
full support for the SB clients out of the box. I have been hoping
for this ever since I bought my Duet in 2008!
4. A high quality amplified, but speaker-less, player more in the line
of the products supplied by Sonos, but with the Touch screen.

These last two would be a major departure from their current ethos
which is to supply the simple network client hardware and let the open
source and add-on community do the rest. Then again the Boom and Radio
were a departure from this so who knows?

What do others think?

An updated Duet would be the most likely but with people using Android
and iPhone apps I can't see them developing the existing controller
much. Perhaps they'll just update the screen to OLED with full 24 bit
colour?

An updated Receiver with better processing power and 24/96 capabilities
would be very welcome though.

What I'd really like to see is for Logitech to subsume the Controller
into a next-generation Harmony. I think this would be a great product
for them.

1. Logitech has brand-equity in universal remotes. It's ridiculous to
have to use one remote to optimally control your Receiver and another
to control your stereo (or Logitech-powered speakers).
2. It could have a bigger screen for navigating the Squeezebox
3. Everyone still needs a universal remote with all the IR-controlled
devices they have, so their is still a need for a Harmony-like
product.
4. More and more consumer devices are controlled over the home LAN, so
the great wifi-capability of the Squeezebox controller is almost a
necessity for any Harmony successor
5. Having a headphone jack on the controller is of some utility for the
Squeezebox, but it's great for other devices. For example, if you are
streaming a movie in your bedroom TV/PC/Revue and your wife is trying
to go to sleep, just plug a headphone into the controller, which has
Squeezeplay to listen without disturbing her. Obviously the device
would need to be able to send the audio over the network, but that
doesn't seem impossible. This is a little different than watching the
video on your iPhone.

Although I concur that we don't know profitability, we DO have hints at
volume. We know that the European sales of SB radio were higher than
Logi expected - to such a degree that the server architecture has
suffered (various Logi staff posted regarding this over the last 12
months). Now I agree that volume sales doesn't necessarily equate to
profitability, but an organisation of Logi's size will surely have a
fix on the required margins...

I think the rage has further to go, yet. (Fingers crossed)

Hmm. They produced the boxes that sold and so quantities were known in
advance. Updating the server architecture and horsepower to match
production should have been a comparatively quick and simple matter.

Having seen the way Logitech work I'm more inclined to put it down to
the ineptitude of their management and the blinkered and short-sighted
nature of their simple sales-driven organisation.

I can definitely see #1 - only a matter of time. For #2, package an

headphone setup working consistently. #3 and #4 seem a bit off target
considering their past direction. How about a #5, as mentioned above I
can see a market for a larger Boom. Certainly several other companies
have gone that way. I think also #6 might be coming at some point - a
Squeeze device integrated with their new Google TV device. All in one
multimedia.
