Re: [slim] Is there a limit to the number of favourites you can have?

2011-01-22 Thread aubuti

This is great. One of my wife's complaints about switching between SBS
and mysb.com (when we let our server go into suspend state) is that the
Favorites look different, because I have folders on SBS but not on mysb.
I think my favorites.opml will soon be my _only_ Favorite on mysb.com.

When testing I noticed that the mysb.com web remote control doesn't
seem to know how to handle the opml file in mysb Favorites. I almost
never use the mysb remote control, so it's not a big deal, but I am
curious if others are seeing the same thing.

Re: [slim] Is there a limit to the number of favourites you can have?

2011-01-22 Thread toby10

Correct, Remote Control Favorites cannot access the OPML file. I'm
guessing for two reasons:
1. MySB web UI cannot understand folders nor OPML
2. the OPML file is a link to a file, it's not actually a favorite
as MySB web UI would understand it

Re: [slim] Is there a limit to the number of favourites you can have?

2011-01-21 Thread toby10

It really does work nicely. I manage these station favorites on SBS
then do the OPML upload to my online file share service.
But an FYI to others using this concept, there are some catches.

Issues using SBS to manage these:
1. SBS should have a separate MySB (or internet radio) OPML folder so
it does not mix in music files with internet streams
2. SBS displays AAC streams which I cannot use on MySB with my older
players, would be nice to filter out AAC streams on SBS as an option
3. SBS (or RadioTime via SBS) will sometimes not give accurate file
type info, where it says the stream is MP3 (or no designation at all)
when in fact it is an AAC stream

Issues uploading the OPML (not really the fault of MySB):
4. Every time I update my OPML file to my online file share I get a
different URL to use
5. Now I must update MySB Favorites with the new URL

#1 is why I'd love for SBS and MySB to Sync this shared and
individual OPML file.
#4 #5 are why I'd love for MySB to handle this (no URL changes)

correct, and to folks reading this, do double check what you get with
your internet service. I had no idea that I had a small 20MB of
webspace available with my Cox Cable account. Never needed/wanted it,
but it has now come in handy with a place to host my OPML file.

Well, you can vote for 'bug/enhancement request 8692'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8692). It's been open for

Ah, thank you! Boy, did I misunderstand that one. I thought you were
uploading an OPML file via MySB. I am not the most tech savvy.
So, somehow, I need to find a place on the internet to host this OPML
file which MySB Favorites sees as a simple Favorite listed item.

I'd love to play with this, any ideas on a simple way and place to host
such a file?

Having Folders via MySB has long been a feature request.
If you could come up with a basic tutorial on how best (and easiest
way) to accomplish this feature I think it would be quite popular. ;)

Many ISPs as part of brandband servuce offer some free webspace or
backup space which can be used. All you need is somewhere that can
server the OPML file using HTTP. The OPML files are usually v. small
compared to web pages so space limitation usually doesn't matter.

Thanks bpa. I think my ISP offers a personal web page as part of
their service so I might just activate that now.
I wonder if, someday, MySB could have an App like Advanced MySB
Favorites where we could upload such small OPML text files for such
use.
We could manage these Favorites via a separate menu item on SBS (like
Favorites on MySB is currently a separate menu item within SBS
Favorites), then simply upload this separate OPML file through such an
App. Being such small text files it probably would not stress out
MySB.com very much, would it? Or would hosting such a file, times
thousands of users accessing these files, cause MySB server issues?

Re: [slim] Is there a limit to the number of favourites you can have?

2011-01-17 Thread garym

I had never even noticed that I had a small free personal web space
with my COX internet service. Doesn't allow too much space, but way
more than I need for opml files. I activated it, and using the webpage
management page at cox.net, I uploaded an opml file, with folder, etc.
from my local SbS.

First I'm thinking, cool... I can have folders when accessing from
mysb.com (which I do use currently from one location). But then I'm
thinking, nice, I can give the URL to my friends and family that are
using SB products, and they can add it as a favorite and see stations
that I think are interesting, organized by folder. And they'll even
automatically have any changes I make to the favorites. And
previously, I could send my brother my opml file to save as favorites,
but that forced him to use my favorites instead of his. Now he can have
all his own favorites AND have a menu item to see my favorites if he
chooses to.

What use is a personal web page if you can't do anything with it ?
Are you sure you cannot up load a HTML file ?
If there is only one html page that can be edited - put your OPML in
it.

Alternatively - there are many free web space site which will give a
small amount of space for free to hold files but delete them if not
downloaded after xx (e.g. 5) days.

Placed the link URL into MySB Favorites, gives me the error incorrect

But all I get is failed to parse error when I select that Favorite.

Ideas? I'm likely doing something incorrect (there's a shocker).

hmmm, when I try to link to your file, I get to the media fire site
where I can download the file (but it is not a direct link). Looking at
that page I see stuff that says the extra cost media fire pro allows
direct linking. So I think you have hosted the file there, but it
is not available as a link.

To checlk whether the host is suitable - When you have created a link -
if you click on the link in a browser you should see the OPML text.

You could use Google Code and just have a single file in your Project
or perhaps add the opml file amongst a real project. Not sure if
Google would like the number of download but it will serve to test
usability for you.

I'm not aware of a limit of Favorites on MySB.com, but be aware that
MySB.com Favorites is just one long list of individual Favorites, there
are no folders to place them in.
The only organizational tasks on MySB Favorites is Add, Delete, and
moving the individual Favorites up or down in the list (grab move
