The problem is sometimes setup will not offer to setup Bluetooth when Harmony's database is wrong/out of date, . I have run into this with Android TV devices and the fix is to "lie" to the setup telling it you have another model to coax it into offering bluetooth setup. fletch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71552 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Turn on TV" (or whatever I > want) and all the correct devices and inputs are selected. With my main TV, a Sammy Q9FN 75, and most of the other TVs in my house are also Sammy's, I have to use IR extenders for all of them. Just not practical for me but they all use Bluetooth remotes. Another problem is that Sammy, in their finite wisdom, decided to cripple their (even their flagship) TVs by completely shutting off IP control after a short period after turning off the TV. Thus, IP control is not possible after a short time. Having a uni-remote system (which I though the Harmony system was) with IP and Bluetooth seems to be a necessity these days. But then, I understand the market may be small since too many people seem content to use their phones (or voice) for everything (I don't carry my phone everywhere I go .. I use my cell phone almost exclusively for outgoing phone calls, and web browsing only when I am not at home and "smart" speakers are not really very smart) and the economics of adding those features may just not have been justified. So, I guess I'll be looking at kludging a JP1 or similar and some bluetooth devices for full household control. I also bought a backup from Best buy. I had the "lower end" smart model on both my main tv and bedroom tv. That one was no longer available new so I went the other route and went with high end model, The Elite. It's nice but it's overkill and I ran into some bugs with the setup software that I have never encountered with the Smart remotes. Basically it would not let me remap certain keys as it claimed they were not available. Yet if you use their other app, those keys are there and then it was an easy fix. Support thought they remote was broken and told me to send it back. The remotes are great once setup.. just the setup software and their tech support is very poor. So if you have many devices/complicated setup - yes it is worth it to me. fletch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71552 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Logitech...where innovative products go to die. After Logitech bought the Canadian company Harmony, they screwed up the programming software making the UI harder to use and constant USB cable problems. I would have to provide tech support to my brother and friend because it was so hard to use. That's why it died. I got my remote and dont know why I didn't do it years ago. Makes life simpler. I see Walmart Canada sells them in their website, or rather a website merchant does. At one time you could get the hub and the smart remote for under $60.0. And even that basic model had lots of undocumented features like voice control on Android tv or fire tv. Google never got this fully working last time I checked but the hub could do it with programming on your part. It could do automations like turning the tv on when you walk in the back door after a certain time, etc. Harmony never advertised this because this was for techies not your average consumer. The setup software was a pain and it would say it can't do that when it could- you just had to know how to "lie" back at it. Once I learned the tricks , I realized Harmony was much better than what was advertised. Re: [slim] Logitech is done making Harmony remotes
Where Harmony really excels for us, is when we have things that don't really talk to each other. For instance, we have a Harmony Hub control TV, Bluray and a Mu-so. The Mu-so is connected to the TV for sound. Because our TV doesn't communicate well over HDMI ARC, we have Harmony control the connection, so that when the TV is turned on (on the Harmony remote), it pauses the Roon zone (using the Deep Harmony extension) where the Mu-so partakes to avoid having it continue playing somewhere else in the house. Alas, now that we have ditched Roon and gone back to LMS, this particular feature has become defunct :-). There aren't any other universal remotes that I know of, that supports this. I was hoping a bit to see the Yio Remote take off, but I think it was too expensive and too complicated for people to build. That would probably have worked too. I also have two Harmony units, but continue to prefer the JP1 remotes, the 8820 cited above was/is really the most perfect remote in the hand, almost as good as the TIVO remotes. But 1000% more useful. The RCA RCRP05BR and the Inteset 4 in 1 are also excellent. I even have a few URC-6131s, personally upgraded by Rob, still in daily use. This makes me a little worried about Logitech, but it's hard to be too critical because of the support they've allowed through/by Michael. Thank you! What makes me worried is that Roku followed a similar path with the fabulous SoundBridge streamers and Radio. I have found them to be very durable -- models like 'the URC-8820' (http://www.remotecentral.com/ureview/114.htm) that I've been using, anyway. It takes years for the button text to start to wear off, and even then the buttons keep working. I own one URC that still works fine even though it got mangled by a foster dog who mistook it for a chew toy. I agree, the JP1 community still seems healthy. Just a few months ago I needed to reporgram my main URC for a new DVD player. I dreaded the prospect of having to reinstall and relearn the RemoteMaster and IR applications, but found that the desktop repogramming software had been improved and simplified. My old .ir remote config backups worked fine and reprogramming was easier than before. BTW, web searches in decent years revealed that apparently many US cable TV companies are offering customers remote controls that are JP1-capable, and those often sell for little on eBay. We gave a Harmony to my aged father-in-law (first a 650, now a 655), as it's much easier to use than the mess of remotes he ended up with after the cable TV box was added to his kit even after the cable guy programmed their universal remote. I love the "try to fix" option, and the ability to switch the color screen soft buttons to "device" mode. So much nicer than trying to remember where you remapped a specific orginal button like Night Mode. Those Harmony remotes haven't held up as well -- after a couple years some of the buttons become unreliable. I had the same problem with my personal Harmony remotes --even ones that saw infrequent use!-- and always thought that Harmony would be truly great if they could improve their hardware. (They reminded me a lot of 20th century Sony gear -- good design, nice programming, but inadequate quality on the switches and buttons.) Still, yesterday I ordered a spare 655 as a backup for my father-in-law. Thank you, Tony T, for posting! Another vote for the One-For-All remotes. I've never owned or used a Harmony, so I don't know what I'm missing, but I have a couple of One-For-All 8's which work very well. They have a learning function, and the JP1 software allows me to backup/clone/restore a fully configured remote very quickly. And they're 'disposably' cheap - 'currently £9 on Amazon' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-All-Contour-Universal-URC1210-Black/dp/B01K1DQ2D4). chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Maybe a lone dissenting voice, but I never really got on with my Harmony remote. After struggling to get it working in the way I wanted I ended up buying some One-for-All (UIC) remotes which can be very flexibly re-programmed / hacked using a home made addaptor and "JP1" software. To be honest I've no idea whether you can still buy the (unofficially) programmable types - I bought several end-of-line One for All 5's at £15 / piece some years back, and although they tend to die after a few year's hard use (or children playing with the battery cover ) my stock is still going, but the JP1 programming site still seems to be alive and active. Although at first sight they're far less sophisticated (and far less expensive) than the Harmony range I've never found any IR device I couldn't control with a JP1-hacked OFA remote. Their only snag is a tendancy to run out of memory if you try to get too clever, but kept simple they work very well.
