2014-05-15 Thread Becca Salchak
Andrew
About point two:
I have never sat through an interview for SYNHAK let alone a job interview
that questioned the applicant about how a place they are joining works. All
the questions I have heard and wee asked of me were: cat or dog? What makes
you happy? What's your favorite drink? Operating system of choice?
If those were not accurate enough questions then I feel all the members who
had this line of questioning should be reinterviewed as well as the from
the beginning Hackers that didn't go through interviews
On May 15, 2014 12:34 AM, a l leit...@gmail.com wrote:

Sorry for the double post. I didn't want my comments to get mistaken as
meeting minutes. I tried to put headings on things in case people didn't
want to read a lengthy email

 1) Apparently I wasn't clear with my wording regarding Wills membership. I
('the secretary') did not say that 'Everything is ok, and last weeks vote
is upheld.. What I said was Last week was a fairly involved interview,
you don't need to do that again. Be sure his(and AJ9's) memberships get
brought up. Meaning his membership needs voted/consented on properly at
 this meeting.
That said: no one expressed any desire to block his joining and no one
 protested at the meeting.

 2) While AJ9's interview was a bit hostile those are important questions
that need asked more frequently by more people. If someone has no idea how
or why we govern the way we do how can we expect them to follow the rules
and help build a better community? Perhaps you could respond to the some of
the questions via email? Particularly consensus and do-ocracy. Feel free
disagree with them! We're an organic collaboration(or at least bill
ourselves as such), we won't grow if we don't get new ideas. On that note,
I'm going to add a question of my own: You mention you're interested in
non-profit work and need a cause to work with right now. What draws you to
SynHak compared to the other non-profits in the area?

3)Regarding the Community Working Group. There is already a proposal that
a few people have contributed ideas to. I feel that since this changes the
way we govern ourselves that it does warrant a full blown proposal. If we
want the suggestions to carry any weight when they are made it needs to be
part of the operating procedures. Xander brought up the idea of formalizing
the face to face mediation style and incorporating it into the proposal.
Having a few mediation templates is a great idea. My only concern is that
we not require them to be used. Getting the disputing parties to
communicate is goal 1A. How they do it is less important so long as they
both agree to it and it occurs in a timely manner.

I'm not convinced that using fractal groups will help. We are(were?) a
community, intentionally dividing us further seems counter productive and
bureaucratic. By having more mailing lists to subscribe to it makes it far
easier for a member to be out of the loop on things that may affect them.
 People are lazy.

 4) The front door. The landlord has told us not to modify it. Would we be
able to convince him to change his mind if we(or a mutually approved
price-quoted-prior-to-work contractor) replaced it in such a manner that
did not prevent the easy re-installation of the original door? We need to
balance our members physical safety with their perception of safety. By
installing a door with a push bar we could still 'lock' the door so outside
entry was not possible during the odd hours but in the event of a fire you
 could get out.

 5) If we're going to assign blame and distribute penalties to someone for
various signs, graffiti and other unexcellent behavior I want verified
 proof.

 6) Last one I promise. Will's key application. You're a new member and a
new face to the community. I like your enthusiasm and apologize that this
is going to come off as an attack, it is not. You want the keys to the
castle but a couple meetings back you were concerned with not knowing
anyone. 24/7 is a lot of trust. Not only that our key holders won't strip
the warehouse for machines and copper but that they'll lock up when they
leave and be excellent hosts to visitors from the public. I don't expect
everyone to know every other member as best friends but I find it hard to
put faith in someone we've just met.
Admittedly my recent and future attendance is lackluster so I welcome
people's anecdotes to instill faith in me about this.

One last time: None of the above are meant to be personal attacks. If any
wording can be construed as such I would appreciate it if you attribute to
poor proofreading, failure to appreciate the situation, and hasty word
 choice.

 regards,
 Andrew L

the CWG is designed to help overcome one of those three catogories of
dispute. Each dispute will be different and coming up with an action tree
for every scenario will be laborious as well as likely tend towards
 people
wanting to institute punitive measures, which the CWG(as written) has no
authority to enforce. If there are flaws in the logic of the proposal, or
oversights I don't see why we can't talk about them here and at a meeting
solely with the intent of polishing the idea.

 Consider this:

Lots of people come to the Tuesday Meeting.

Only some of those people are actually interested in resolving conflicts.

Even fewer of our entire membership cares about building a mechanism for
resolving conflicts. A number would rather instead inflict punishments for
 minor infractions:

 https://synhak.org/pipermail/discuss/2014-March/007790.html

Therefore, the Tuesday meeting is not the best place to find folks who care
about building mechanisms to resolve conflicts. Have a meeting where you'll
have people with valuable insight instead of a general meeting where the
 idea
can get pecked at picked at by everyone and slow down the process.

Consensus is for decision making, not planning and fleshing out ideas. Does
anyone really want a three hour Tuesday meeting again?

Re: [SH-Discuss] [SYNHAK-Announce] Board meeting 5/5/2014 7pm

2014-04-30 Thread Becca Salchak
I'm sorry I was trying to stay out of this conversation because I feel like
my points are always misconstrued over the mailing lists but I have to say
something now. SYNHAK does not live and die by Torrie Fischer. We are not
trying to get rid of her through removing her from her office. I can't
speak for all of us but I know that most respect Torrie for her major
contributions to SYNHAK. This board meeting was called because some of the
membership are very VERY upset in how she is treating her office she hasn't
been removed yet and we can not guarantee that she will be removed. But
there are quite a few unhappy members.
SYNHAK is having some internal problems right now. I was saying that we are
going through some growing pains and like a child growing into an adult
there are some painful moments where the body must stretch and change to
accommodate as such. But the pains we are suffering now are not growing
pains they are pains from a cancerous growth. (I never thought I would say
something like this because I like Torrie I think for the most part Torrie
has great ideas , is a very creative person, and a fun person to hang out
with.) There obviously is a problem. She is perceiving hatred and judgment
about personal issues when the majority of the time there isn't any
judgment. The only judgment now is people judging her on her over
reactions. The only fires at SYNHAK are a result of Torrie hold a
magnifying glass over problems until the combust. If Torrie does get voted
out of office there are people who are willing to step up and fill the void
. if Torrie does decide to leave and burn SYNHAK down as she goes We will
survive we will rebuild.

Re: [SH-Discuss] Proposal: Keys and Dues

2014-04-25 Thread Becca Salchak
The issue of the family discount and keys was consensed on and passed on
Tuesday. As it reads in the minutes the policy is what we agreed on at the
sub committee meeting except that Robert Walter was grandfathered in with
the ability to apply for a key. We then went through the proper steps of
his application where in after discussion with the membership, himself, his
mother and grandfather the membership consensed and he received a key. He
will never be in the space with put his mother or father or other
responsible guardian present. He also understands that the key is his and
he can not share it with anyone else. no one at the meeting blocked the
idea of Robert having a key.
The student discount and senior discount were not included in Torrie's
proposal. Why?I'm not sure I remember discussing it at the meeting but
honestly it slipped my mind during the weekly meeting. if you so wish you
can write up a proposal and we will go through the measures of consensus.

The minutes do not reflect any consent on family dues nor restricting
keys to minors. They do reflect consent on issuing Robert a key.
I asked for clarification on the discussion that was conducted
surrounding this proposal and the response was:
The wording had not been changed, no one saw this as two separate issues,
and that it was still an open proposal.

 TWIMC at SH,

Since I have been isolated on my private island for the past week or so,
I may have missed some details.

If anybody is interested, here is my position and thoughts on several of
the points under discussion about membership, dues, and key access.

 dues

 * regular rate of $35 per month for anybody over age 18

 * discount rate for families - $35 per month for first adult, plus $15
per month for each additional person over age 18, plus $5 per month for
 kids under age 18

 * discount rate for high school and college students - $15 per month

 * discount of 10% off the monthly amount for pre-payment of 3 or more
months for any membership, paid in advance

What happened to the long-discussed senior discount? I brought up the
issue way back in Oct or Nov at one of the first weekly meetings I ever
attended, but no definitive action has ever been taken.

*I suggest that a senior discount be established at the rate of $25 per
 month. *

 *membership*

 * should be open to all, with exceptions, subject to approval by the
 existing membership

 * should be denied to illegal immigrants, convicted felons, known drug
users, and anybody on the Ohio/any other state sex offenders list

 * should be suspended for members who have not paid their dues after
30days and rescinded permanently if the dues are not paid after 90days.

 *key access*

 * should be available to all active members (over age 18) in good
standing, on written request and after a discussion of the request at a
weekly meeting, with an open vote or consensus by members present
 (unanimous vote required)

 * should be available to one or both of the parents/guardians of an
active member under age 18 in good standing - the member can have the key,
but can only use it when accompanied by their parent or guardian

 * should be immediately rescinded and the key recovered from any member
who fails to lock the building (front door and/or garage door) on exit, if
they are the person responsible for closing the space

 * should be immediately rescinded and the key recovered from any member
who shares the key with anybody else not authorized to have key access

 ---

I am in full agreement with the comment by Andrew about minors and their
parents/guardians while at the building. A minor should never, ever be
left alone in any area of the space (except the bathroom), but must be
under constant supervision by the parent or guardian or a member (as chosen
or approved by the parent or guardian). Members present should not be
expected or encouraged to babysit the younger members while the parent is
outside smoking/chatting/stargazing or engaged in their own project,
 ignoring the kid.

For example, if Robert (age 7) would like to have a 2x4 sawed in half on
the chop saw, I would be happy to do it for him, subject to approval by Rob
or Jenny. If Robert wants to help paint a wall, I would be happy to have
him on the painting team while Rob or Jenny is off doing something else.

Feel free to reply or comment in person. I am always open to
 suggestions and constructive criticism.

 Philip

[SH-Discuss] Silent auction

2014-04-21 Thread Becca Salchak
I plan on sharing my ideas for the silent auction at the meeting tomorrow.
It would be really beneficial to the planning of this event if my fellow
hakkers came up with lists of companies local and otherwise to solicit
donations from. I have letters to send to these companies after I verify
the location and finalize the date of the event. Things to keep in mind for
donations:
1.tangible gifts bring in more money then vouchers I.e. a basket containing
a bottle of wine and glasses from a local winery would fetch more cash then
a voucher for a free tour of the same winery.

2. Any small donation can be combined with others to make bigger gifts I.e.
a gift card to a hotel , a restaurant and a bottle of wine can be put on a
basket to make a date night basket.

3. We will have a variety of guests so we should have a variety of gifts
fun gifts for single folks as well as families

4. Also I would like to request donations from members
I.e I would donate a skirt or piece of jewelry , g could donate a boat
ride and picnic on the lake etc.

This is a huge endeavor and I can't plan it alone. But with everyone's help
we can make a successful annual fundraiser that we can turn into a night
that friends of SYNHAK look forward to every year

There's no difference in member privileges. There still are different

That membership table is also pretty out of date, since we don't offer web

Properly formatted, a single page (with an adhesive back) could yield 4 to

The cost per sticker would no more than 10cents each (4up), if printed in
color. It would be less if printed in grayscale.

If the sticker needs to be weatherproofed for some reason, it can be
inexpensively laminated on one or both sides.

A cheaper way to protect against the elements is to use the regular
sticker and brush one coat of clear nail polish on the surface.

As you can surmise, I am not a fan of spending org money on things that we
 can do in house.

Also, why buy 200 or 500 stickers when SH needs way less - at the present
 time.

We can make what is needed, whenever.

paper can be sprayed with 3M adhesive)

Mostly the idea was to have some vinyl kiss-cut stickers that are a lot
 more
weatherproof and durable than whatever an inkjet or color laser could
 produce.
We currently do not have that capability at the space, unless I'm
 mistaken.

They wouldn't be DO NOT HACK stickers, but just the SYNHAK logo.

Noisebridge always has a pile of stickers around. If a piece of equipment
 is
tagged with a vinyl Noisebridge sticker, the general assumption is that it
means This particular thing is the property of Noisebridge and you should
really take care of it for everyone!

Different concept from DNH, but thats the background behind purchasing
stickers. For an example of one such Noisebridge sticker, check the back
 of my
 laptop or phone.

No need to pay an outside vendor for something you can do yourself on
 your
computer or one of the many computers at SH or the Main library.

It is cheaper and easier to make stickers or signs by yourself, as
 needed.

If you want sticky, print the sticker/sign on full-adhesive paper.

If you want the rainbow effect, print the sign/sticker in color.

For my projects, I will make and use the red circle with a slash sign I
made in Publisher, saved as a PDF and printed 4-up in color for a
 quarter
  at the library.

That's about 6cents a sign for a personalized sign with my name and my
  email address.

All were taken on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at SYN/HAK, *after* the
 regular meeting of the GARC.

Included are shots of Tim S, Andrew L, Martin P, Chris N, and a guy named
 Warren.

There are three photos of the three-wheeled, battery-powered,
remote-controlled Rover made by Martin P. Because of his medical
training and experience, there is a rumor that he might try to convert it
into a mini-ambulance for dogs and cats needing remote controlled
transportation to the vet. The Rover would go to the accident site, pick
up the injured animal, and scoot down the sidewalks and back alleys to the
animal hospital - with all the movements being controlled by Martin as he
 relaxes in his leather Lazy-Boy.

There are a few shots of the GARC robot on a table and some of it in
action on a movie screen. Tim was kind enough to take the time to discuss
the robot with me and show me two movies from the competition it was part
 of.

Also, there are two photos of the air-powered robot owned by Andy B.

Feel free to view, copy, share, or print any of the photos, as long as
you are doing so in a personal, non-commercial way. Let me know if you
need to use any in a commercial way and we can talk about it.

If you want a better print or a larger print, contact me and I will make
the original 16 MP file available. There might be a cheeseburger involved

outline a few other points that could fall in this realm:

1: The parking lot across the street is private parking and does not
 belong

2: The military recruiting office is 50ft from our door, there is no

I'm not trying to side-step your suggestion, I'm not even against the

is indicative of the fact that there is no formal statement from Synhak
 on
the subject. I'm trying to come up with a resolution that doesn't come
 off
as Synhak has a substance problem (because Synhak does NOT), that
protects the organization's interest, and requires little effort to
implement or the need to go back and change as society changes. What I
don't want is to foster a climate where if a person has a problem with
something or someone, that they point their finger and say You fix it.
 It
is the antithesis of a hackerspace. Individual responsibility and
 community
are paramount at Synhak and using the board to address minor issues
 between
a few individuals with general legislation is a detriment to future of
 how
Synhak is governed/operates. The only time the police should ever be
involved at Synhak is when someone refuses to leave when asked by a
  Champion or other officer.

Since the dawn of time, we've all stressed that the board exists simply so
that SYNHAK, Inc exists as a legal entity in the eyes of the State of Ohio.
The Membership has always been in charge.

I mean, whats the point of having weekly meetings, consensus, champions,
mediation, excellence, and everything else associated with our governance
process if the board feels that they're free to jump in at any time and
 decide
what is best for us all?

I think it would benefit us to talk to some people with experience with
summer youth programs (Suzie graham who use to run Lock 3 summer arts
experience , Wendy Duke of miller south and a few others I have in mind) .
Take the remainder of the year to make contacts , get comfortable in our
new space, perhaps find funding set up open DNS incase the kids are on the
computers , make detailed plans for the program and launch it next year.
This would give us chances to come up with lesson plans and test them out
on a group of volunteer kids ( children, friends and family members of
synhakers) so we can see the lessons carried out like a tech rehearsal for
a play . Perhaps come up with a survey to distribute to a few schools to be
sent home with kids asking key questions like:
1. When in the summer would be best for your family?
2. What time during the day?
3.would you as a parent want to chaperone the program?
4. Under proper supervision would you be comfortable with your child using
tools such as drills, soldering irons, computers?
Etc. etc.
I requested lesson plans from Bethany on the previous thread and she did
not respond.

 would be as follows:

 * Matt has offered to step up and help run the Young Aristotles program
should the current program maintainer need or want the assistance. He
has stated an interest in renaming the program to Lil' Archimedes.

The way I worded it in the minutes does not accurately reflect the
announcement or conversation that followed thereafter. I apologize for
the inaccurate wording causing drama. The above line item more
accurately reflects what happened last night.

Beth, Matt's announcement was not that he is tearing the program out
from under you, throwing away the work you've done, torching the
concept, and creating his own kids' program. He simply offered to help
 run it.

I would recommend that Beth and Matt contact each other outside of the
list to resolve any communications issues that aren't being solved here.

To clarify on the use of the word office, I apologize for that. I
misused a word that has a defined meaning within SYN/HAK's governmental
structure, apparently implying to some people that the person running
the program in question held some sort of elected, official position
within SYN/HAK. This is not the case. The proper term to use to
describe the person running the program would be maintainer, since we
have a definition for that word which more accurately matches the role
Beth holds in regards to Little Aristotles.

If anyone has any questions regarding last night's minutes, please ask
soon, while the meeting is still somewhat fresh in my head.

What can we sell at a silent auction ? we are a fracking maker space!!
there are tons of possiabilities for what we could sell. I started writing
out plans for a silent auction last night after talking with Andy. This
isn't an instant solution but it is defiantly one we can do a couple months
down the road. examples of what could be sold are (these are all
hypothetical these rant actual required donations) :
- I could donate a skirt that i made ... Probably a star wars one because
people seem to love it (valued at $40)
-Beth could donate a necklace and ear ring set
-Nicole could donate one of her metal pieces
-Matt Smallwood and Steve IV could donate a free consultation plus a coupon
for $100 of a service from Brewbeck IT services
-using the magical interwebs i could print out a few cookie cutters on the
3d printer and make a baking gift basket that probably would in the end
cost me no more then $10.
-Torrie if she so desired could donate a tiny robot or something
- G could offer a picnic and boat ride out on the lakes which would just
cost him the picnic supplies gas and a few hours out on his own boat ( my
grandmother has a pontoon and auctions the same thing off at the African
Sky silent auction every year)
-Omar could put together a laptop that has been donated that would be good
enough to play video games on it load a copy of portal on to it and put
portal related items into a basket and auction off that.
- Matt Smallwood could auction of a curry dinner for 6 at the winners house
where he goes to their house one night and prepares and serves dinner. ( my
father use to auction off a pasta dinner for the knights of Columbus every
year)
- Devin could put together a paintball basket with a $5 gift card to a
paint ball range,a small thing of amunition, a few monster and a camo hat.
( all this stuff we could probably get as a donation from location)
-we could contact local art students from U of A, Firestone and Miller
South or professional artists like PR Miller and Don Drumm and ask them to
donate works of art .
again these are just ideas not one person has to donate exactly what i said
just brainstorming ideas to get those cogs turning.

This is not an instant fundraiser it would take at least 2 months to plan
and launch. the most expensive part we face is location, food, and drink
we could have it at the space if we can hold off on loud hacking for a
night and make the space presentable.
food we can either have members make food or we can buy a frack ton of
stuff from GFS like meatballs , egg rolls, little smokies
we also need to serve booze we don't need a full bar but we need an open
bar and two nicely dressed hackers to hand out the beer and wine. I was
thinking we could go totally local and get maybe donations or discounts
from the hopping frog, the thirsty dog ,the Ohio brewing company, and
wineries like the red horse which is in Barberton and the winery at wolf
creek also in Barberton. The booze is key because we need attendees loose
with there money. So that if we can't get donations may be our biggest
expense
So that is my idea in a nut shell there you go

Oh my gosh you should do something similar to junk yard wars. That would
 be a riot.

For all who have never seen the show, two teams (you can do many more)
were let loose in a junkyard with an objective. Some sort of obstacle
course awaited them and they had to build a machine to complete that
 course.

Thank you for the update. As far as the south wall. I do not want this
 being

 design

 lawyers

  Hello Pat,

As we get further along with the renovations I would like to get your
 input
on several projects we have coming up.

First off we have removed the wall that divides the lunch room from the
 main
office area as per your approval.

We are now looking at removing the wall and adjoining closet that
 separate
the small office from the rest of the

now larger lunch room. I do not wish to hurt the resale value or
 usefulness
of the property in the event SYNHAK

Inc. does not purchase this property. Please advise.

We are also in talks about adding windows to the top half of the south
facing wall (the long wall). My concern is

the wall movement that is centered on the exhaust vent becoming
 amplified.
  Also please advise.

I have asked Mr. and Mrs. Herman to edit their sublease to reflect
Blue Crab Ventures as the land owner. I will

forward you the final copy as soon as I receive it.

  Thanks for your attention,

them from ever being used as a dialysis machine again. This is due to some
liability issues with the company I work for. I may have two more machines
available in the near future. It just depends.
However, there are a couple of things I would like to do with some of
the parts I have removed. Each machine has 3 small stepper motors, just
like the ones on the 3-D printer. Each printer takes 4. The machines also
have 4 out runner motors which are the size that 600 size RC helicopters
 are using.
The first thing I would like to do is make a 3-D printer. The second
thing I would like to do is make a quad copter with the out runner motors.
I am curious if any one else might be interested in also building a 3-D
printer as maybe a group project; meaning, each person in the group is
actually building a 3-D printer. So if there are 4 of us in this group,
there will be four 3-D printer completed and running at the end of the
project. And the same would be true of the Quad copter project group.
Is there any interest in something like this???

Guess what we're doing on Tuesday and Wednesday?

Cleaning and making everything as safe as possible.

   Thanks for the heads up.

Hello all and Merry Christmas! So next week, New Years Eve, Tuesday, we
will be having a party at the space. It will be the last hurrah at the
old space! At this point, as far as I know, it is BYOB. I wasn't sure
if people would want to bring food. If you want to bring something, just
let everyone know what you are bringing in this thread, and I will add it
to a list! I hope to see as many people there as possible!
Merry Christmas, enjoy you the day! Happy Hacking! -Beth

Hey is the space going to be opened on new years eve? I think it should
 be
have a new years open house since our last open house was so successful.

Now that I think about it, SYNHAK legally turns 2 years old on Februrary
 28th.
That also might be worth a bigger open house at the next location since
 we'd
be a bit more moved in.
