[libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help

2015-12-09 Thread Joel Madero
Hi All,

We have a volunteer (Robert Alexander) who has started making some tutorial
videos that are supposed to coincide with help files.

My hope is that we can figure out some way to link these files within the
help itself. Any thoughts on that being a possibility? If we use youtube
(at least at the beginning) I believe that translating is possible for
subtitles.

A couple examples are below:
https://youtu.be/Q8V-5yeTHCM
https://youtu.be/DtEzyM28rlc

Thoughts much appreciated. This would obviously be an ongoing task but I
think that having tutorials for lots of features would be quite helpful for
those who aren't capable or interested in reading help files (for whatever
reason).

Best,
Joel

Re: Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help

2015-12-09 Thread Joel Madero
Hi Robert,

So the news is not good (at least in my opinion). Of course you can
continue doing the videos but it seems like because you can't speak in 200
languages we can't link it in the help files. Having English only would
interfere with locale teams (I'm still unclear how but I'm no expert there
and one of the experts has guaranteed me that such a link would have dire
affects on the community).

So what you could do is just create a youtube channel and post the
videos...obviously visibility would be substantially less but, that's where
we are.

You could then create a wiki somewhere useful that links to your videos.

Wish I had better news - I'm still looking into the possibilities but right
now there seems to be a big blocker in getting such a cool addition to the
product.

Best,
Joel

Just for full transparency here. Sophie and I had an extended talk on
chat and I'm of the belief that to prevent this from getting into help
files because other locales aren't doing the same is not the smartest
way to move forward. I instead would prefer including it and then
supporting locales to do the same - in the respective languages, with
the right GUI, etcThese then would be linked in the locales help
files and it would empower the community, expand on the product, and
give visibility to a great tool (videos that literally show exactly how
to use features).

To prevent a significant chunk of our user base to have this tool is
problematic. The solution of having a much much less visible "solution"
is not in the best interest of our users.

I'd prefer discussing a better solution, one where we can agree that the
tool is awesome for users, that the more visibility the better, and one
that empowers contributors to follow Robert's lead and developer
tutorial videos in their respective languages.

I look forward to hearing Italo's thoughts after he has healed :)

Best,
Joel

Best to keep Sophi in the loop also as she has a very different
interpretation of how to proceed.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help

2015-12-09 Thread Joel Madero
Sounds great Robert! I'm still trying to figure out how we can link in
the help files as I really do think that will be the most beneficial for
our user base. I'm going to reach out to a couple developers and so long
as we can find something that:

1) Doesn't impact local teams workflow;
2) Allows for easy translation for any other contributors

I think we can move forward but it will require some backend work. Let
me poke around but if you create a channel and start creating videos
that coincide with help files that will be fantastic.

Thanks again for your great work :)

Joel

Hi Clayton,

Great to have you back. We're in the process of hiring a documentation
mentor who hopefully (in collaboration with the team) can start planning
out some of the larger projects. I know I have repetitively been begging
for some love to go towards the wiki so maybe that can become a large
project that the team tackles over time.

Again, thanks for your volunteer hours :)

[libreoffice-documentation] debug wiki needs love

2015-11-07 Thread Joel Madero
Hi All,

I thought this would be a good project for one (or more) of you
fantastic documentation oriented people. Our debug page is not nearly as
useful as it could be because it's written: (1) missing vital info; (2)
in a way that is targeted towards developers instead of towards users -
debugging often times isn't that hard and an "every day user" can do it
but the instructions aren't the clearest.

If someone is interested in starting, I suggest starting with dealing
with valgrind instructions, Norbert has been kind enough to say he'd
explain the process to anyone from documentation that is willing to
clean up the instructions. He can be found on the developer chat
(shm_get) or by email nthieb...@gmail.com. Please don't waste his time
if you're not going to take a serious stab at trying to clean the wiki

One thing I've noticed is that there are several pages dealing with logs
- they should be consolidated to the best location (in my opinion QA not
development) and linked appropriately:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugReport/Debug_Information#GNU.2FLinux:_How_to_get_a_Valgrind_log
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/How_to_debug#Valgrinding_.28memcheck.29_cppunit_tests
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/How_to_debug#Valgrinding_.28memcheck.29_LibreOffice_itself

etc

I'm happy to talk about the scope of the clean up - feel free to ping me.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Joel

Is there a wiki somewhere with "tasks that need done" for documentation?
I think it would be great to have one and tasks like this could be added
- tracking the areas that need attention is the first step to addressing
the problems.

This would be OK if I could use the column the way I've used the
toolbar. I click the X, click on the item I want to use. The column
 disappears, and nothing has happened.

I hope I've described the problem sufficiently for you to tell me how
to get the toolbar back to its accustomed place.

I've tried reading the help items, and the toolbar portions of the pdf
Writer Guide, but they do not seem to address my problem.

When I click on View/Toolbars, my Formatting Toolbar is checked, which
gives me hope that it is still around even though I am unable to see

 Thanks for your assistance, Art

If a notice-template that automatically places the page into a specific

badly written, outdated, conflicts with, good but not current, good and
current, any other categories needed to clean up pages), be made.
I can walk through the wiki, placing the appropriate notice-template on

I don't have the disk space to pull the entire wiki onto my laptop, and

On the face of it, that sounds like an easy hack.
However, for somebody just starting out with documentation, it looks
like a daunting task.

Breaking it up into five or six tasks would make it look much less
daunting, and more appropriate for an easy hack:
* Duplicate page;
* Badly written material;
* Outdated material;
* Material on this page conflict with material on another page;
* Good but not current material;
* Both good and current material;

Then once those determinations had been made, material can be
re-written, updated, etc.

[libreoffice-documentation] Seeking Feedback from Documentation Team :)

2015-04-13 Thread Joel Madero
Hi All!

So I'm not sure if you're all aware but I'm responsible for oversight of
the documentation teamwhat does this mean you might ask...? Well
just that I watch the mailing list and kind of monitor what's going on
and keep the board appraised of life in the deep end of documentation.

So I'm emailing the list just to get individual documentation member's
perceptions of how things are going in this side of the project. Feel
free to email me directly if you don't want to be public.

Questions:
1) What are the current goals in documentation?;
2) Any pressing concerns?;
3) Anything else on your mind?

Feel free to literally tell me anything - if you take it off the message
list I'll keep your name private when I report back to the board.

Joel

 Hi :)
There is a page either on the TDF site or the official LibreOffice

I'm not sure if there is one on the wiki.

It's becoming a constant theme that people actually cannot find the paid
support easily so I think that having a link in the manual to a concrete
page that directs to paid support would be useful. Else...what's the
point in having the sub-section? Force users to go and google around to
find the answer?

I think it would be great if his privileges on ODFAuthors could be
escalated so that he too can register new people. I think at the
moment it's only Jean and Sigrid that are able to do so and it would
be great to have a back-up. OTH maybe everyone can do it but just
doesn't know how to, in which case teaching Joel would achieve the
 same result.

 Hi :)
It sounds like you might be happier with doing proof-reading rather than
reviewing - at least for Base. For Base that is especially useful. Most
of the other guides have been largely proof-read many times already. There
are always new things added and it's always possible that someone new might
spot an even better way of saying something but the Base Handbook has
hardly ever been proof-read in English.

As far as reviewing the Base Handbook goes it might be trickier for you to
do later chapters but earlier ones might be fantastic if they've not been
 done already.

With Base, unlike other modules/programs/apps in the suite, the later
chapters might depend on you having followed through earlier chapters so
that you have the same sample database set-up. I'm not sure if it's
possible to just jump straight into later chapters.

Also since it's all so new it might be useful to start off by doing one of
the later chapters in the Writer Guide first, just to get used to the
work-flow, how the team works, how ODFAuthors works and generally settle in
a bit before jumping further into new territory.

However, it is your choice and whichever way you go is going to be very
 useful!
 Good luck and regards from
 Tom :)

 Hi,

I wouldn't mind helping out for the review for base if you havent already
 got enough.
I've had very little experience using base (or any database) and I might
learn something myself whilst being of service to others.
I don't have oodles of time, i've got quite a few things on the go - also
i've got limited access to internet at home - only on my phone - but access
in the office where I work 2.5 days/week, but I'm sure I could find some
 time to do this.

If you think I could be of help, do let me know!

This completes the draft book. As soon as chapters have been reviewed,
and revised as necessary, I will publish the chapters and compile the
full book. Please note that any major changes suggested (that is,
improvements rather than correcting errors) will probably be postponed
to the next update of the book. Improving the book is a very good
thing to do, but not at this stage of production... unless nobody
(except me) cares whether this book gets done in a reasonable time or
 not. It's already very late.

How do I choose a chapter to review? I am particularly interested in the
forms area and would like to review this chapter.

 Regards

 Peter Goggin

Sorry to be a pain but when I select a chapter how do I set so others know
I am reviewing it and how do I tell if a chapter is under review? My
interests cover both the forms side (gui fort end) and the data base
setting up tables, views queries etc. As I was a database manager and
designer for many years I have spent many hours dealing with both the front
end (gui user forms and controls) and the back end data base design.

Please advise me where you think I would be most useful.

 Regards

 Peter Goggin

[libreoffice-documentation] EasyHack - Documentation/User Manual for New Features

2014-06-23 Thread Joel Madero
Hi All,

There are a few new features that have no documentation that we can find
(ie no help and/or user manual). We have a meta bug opened:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80430

If you are interested in writing the documentation on any of those
please email me or the documentation list and we'll help get you started.

Thanks!

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: EasyHack - Documentation/User Manual for New Features

2014-06-23 Thread Joel Madero

Hey Alex,
Every other link I clicked in that list produces a 500 Internal Server
 Error.

Most of the cases lacking documentation appear to be Calc functions.
Writing documentation for them actually requires that we understand what
it is that each function is supposed to do in the first place. Without
the developer's input, at least for the parameters required (and their
order), it would appear to be more than just an Easy Hack.
My bad I should have been clearer. If someone is willing to take on one
or more of these, we would find who wrote the code and get the person
willing to document in touch with that developer :) That way it can
become an easy hack. Easy hacks always require code pointers and a
mentor so we would get that together if someone(s) volunteers to take on
the documentation part :)

Best,
Joel
