Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: [Libreoffice-qa] Uploading Edited Manual
Thanks for the info. I'm slightly confused, am I uploading to wiki or following Jean's advice and letting someone proof it before? It's honestly a really simple addition. It's more to address the user who submitted the request and knock one of the 5,000+ bugs off the list :) I can even post it here: *This is pertaining to bug reported here*: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41600 *The original text is located in:* Install the required dictionaries *It reads:* LibreOffice automatically installs several dictionaries with the program. To add other dictionaries, be sure you are connected to the Internet, and then use Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online. LibreOffice will open your default web browser to a page containing links to additional dictionaries that you can install. Follow the prompts to select and install the ones you want. *I changed/added to the following:* LibreOffice automatically installs several dictionaries with the program. To add other dictionaries, be sure you are connected to the Internet, and then use Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online. LibreOffice will open your default web browser to a page containing links to additional dictionaries that you can install. When you download the dictionary or dictionaries that you want, they will be in the open office extension format (.oxt). In order to install these extensions use Tools > Extension Manager...click on Add...located at the bottom of the extension manager dialog. Navigate to the appropriate folder containing your dictionary in .oxt format, select the oxt dictionary and click Open. [libreoffice-documentation] EasyHack - Documentation/User Manual for New Features
Hi All, There are a few new features that have no documentation that we can find (ie no help and/or user manual). We have a meta bug opened: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80430 If you are interested in writing the documentation on any of those please email me or the documentation list and we'll help get you started. If someone is willing to take on one or more of these, we would find who wrote the code and get the person willing to document in touch with that developer :) That way it can "become" an easy hack. Easy hacks always require code pointers and a mentor so we would get that together if someone(s) volunteers to take on the documentation part :) Best, Joel -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-documentation] Could Anyone Put a Netbook to Use
Hi All, We have two netbooks (Windows 8 but you could probably dual boot with Linux) that were bought for QA that are currently not being used. Just curious if anyone could put these to use. Preferably they would stick with QA but if someone outside of QA could use them, I'll talk to Florian to see what we can do. Note that one of them has a German keyboard layout. Email me directly if you could put it to use - let me know what you would use it for, and how much use you would put it to :) I just hate to see machines sitting around not being put to use. [libreoffice-documentation] Seeking Feedback from Documentation Team :)
Hi All! So I'm not sure if you're all aware but I'm responsible for oversight of the documentation teamwhat does this mean you might ask...? Well just that I watch the mailing list and kind of monitor what's going on and keep the board appraised of life in the deep end of documentation. So I'm emailing the list just to get individual documentation member's perceptions of how things are going in this side of the project. Feel free to email me directly if you don't want to be public. Questions: 1) What are the current goals in documentation?; 2) Any pressing concerns?; 3) Anything else on your mind? Hi All, I'm just curious if documentation team is doing anything to clean the wiki. Not trying to tell you guys to do it ;) Just thinking if you have the people (which I think you do...I see requests for ODFAuthors coming through all the time) then maybe that can be an additional project outside of just cleaning and translating the manuals. However, for somebody just starting out with documentation, it looks like a daunting task. Breaking it up into five or six tasks would make it look much less daunting, and more appropriate for an "easy hack": * Duplicate page; * Badly written material; * Outdated material; * Material on this page conflict with material on another page; * Good but not current material; * Both good and current material; Then once those determinations had been made, material can be re-written, updated, etc. jonathon -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-documentation] debug wiki needs love
Hi All, I thought this would be a good project for one (or more) of you fantastic documentation oriented people. Our debug page is not nearly as useful as it could be because it's written: (1) missing vital info; (2) in a way that is targeted towards developers instead of towards users - debugging often times isn't that hard and an "every day user" can do it but the instructions aren't the clearest. If someone is interested in starting, I suggest starting with dealing with valgrind instructions, Norbert has been kind enough to say he'd explain the process to anyone from documentation that is willing to clean up the instructions. He can be found on the developer chat (shm_get) or by email nthieb...@gmail.com. Please don't waste his time if you're not going to take a serious stab at trying to clean the wiki One thing I've noticed is that there are several pages dealing with logs - they should be consolidated to the best location (in my opinion QA not development) and linked appropriately: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugReport/Debug_Information#GNU.2FLinux:_How_to_get_a_Valgrind_log https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/How_to_debug#Valgrinding_.28memcheck.29_cppunit_tests https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/How_to_debug#Valgrinding_.28memcheck.29_LibreOffice_itself etc I'm happy to talk about the scope of the clean up - feel free to ping me. Thanks in advance. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Hi everyone
Hi Clayton, Great to have you back. We're in the process of hiring a documentation mentor who hopefully (in collaboration with the team) can start planning out some of the larger projects. I know I have repetitively been begging for some love to go towards the wiki so maybe that can become a large project that the team tackles over time. Again, thanks for your volunteer hours :) Best, Joel On Fri, Nov 20, 2015 at 9:55 AM, C wrote: > HI everyone. > > It's been a while since I've popped in here. [libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help
Hi All, We have a volunteer (Robert Alexander) who has started making some tutorial videos that are supposed to coincide with help files. My hope is that we can figure out some way to link these files within the help itself. Any thoughts on that being a possibility? If we use youtube (at least at the beginning) I believe that translating is possible for subtitles. A couple examples are below: https://youtu.be/Q8V-5yeTHCM https://youtu.be/DtEzyM28rlc Thoughts much appreciated. This would obviously be an ongoing task but I think that having tutorials for lots of features would be quite helpful for those who aren't capable or interested in reading help files (for whatever reason). Re: Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help
Hi Robert, So the news is not good (at least in my opinion). Of course you can continue doing the videos but it seems like because you can't speak in 200 languages we can't link it in the help files. Having English only would interfere with locale teams (I'm still unclear how but I'm no expert there and one of the experts has guaranteed me that such a link would have dire affects on the community). So what you could do is just create a youtube channel and post the videos...obviously visibility would be substantially less but, that's where we are. You could then create a wiki somewhere useful that links to your videos. Wish I had better news - I'm still looking into the possibilities but right now there seems to be a big blocker in getting such a cool addition to the product. Sophie and I had an extended talk on chat and I'm of the belief that to prevent this from getting into help files because other locales aren't doing the same is not the smartest way to move forward. I instead would prefer including it and then supporting locales to do the same - in the respective languages, with the right GUI, etcThese then would be linked in the locales help files and it would empower the community, expand on the product, and give visibility to a great tool (videos that literally show exactly how to use features). To prevent a significant chunk of our user base to have this tool is problematic. The solution of having a much much less visible "solution" is not in the best interest of our users. I'd prefer discussing a better solution, one where we can agree that the tool is awesome for users, that the more visibility the better, and one that empowers contributors to follow Robert's lead and developer tutorial videos in their respective languages. I look forward to hearing Italo's thoughts after he has healed :) Best, Joel -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Video Tutorial Link in Help
Sounds great Robert! I'm still trying to figure out how we can link in the help files as I really do think that will be the most beneficial for our user base. I'm going to reach out to a couple developers and so long as we can find something that: 1) Doesn't impact local teams workflow; 2) Allows for easy translation for any other contributors I think we can move forward but it will require some backend work. Let me poke around but if you create a channel and start creating videos that coincide with help files that will be fantastic. Thanks again for your great work :) Best, Joel On 12/09/2015 05:07 PM, Robert Alexander wrote: > Hi everyone, > thank you all for putting so much consideration into this discussion. > > I am quite happy to independently create tutorial videos for > LibreOffice if it turns out that this is the best route for the > project as a whole.
