[libreoffice-documentation] Audio format

2021-02-06 Thread toki

All:

Has anybody converted and distributed the Libreoffice documentation as
an audio book?

If so:
* What was the experience in creating the audio book?
* What was the audience reception to the audio book?

Format is presentation markup.
Attribute is the specific quality associated with the presentation markup.

Presentation markup is the stuff to use to make your document look good,
bad, ugly, etc.

Setting _Comic Sans_ as the font, is setting an attribute (the font) for
the presentation markup.

Setting _Libre Office Green 0_as the foreground colour, is setting an
attribute (ink colour) of the presentation markup.

Note: Attribute can also refer to syntactical markup. However, that
would be beyond the scope of the documentation you are working on.

The various forms of documentation should complement, and supplement

Each video, at the beginning, should clearly state which version of LibO
it is for, and on which platform. "LibreOffice 6" is not enough. It
needs to state "LibreOffice 6.0.4.1". Likewise, not "Windows", but
"Windows 10 Pro", or "Windows 10 S".

> + Security

What are the GDPR requirements here?

> + Cultural localization

What is needed, is a template of what/how to do the video, without
violating the culture norms of the communities of the globe.

For some countries, Israel, Saudi Arabia, etc. a male narrator is required.

In some places, _Torres Straits_ for example, depictions of people that
are dead, or dying, are taboo.

Each country has its own set of taboo colours. Offhand, I don't remember
if there is a colour that has positive connotations, world wide.

When shooting the script, ensure that there is a place for the Sign
Language video window to be inserted, without covering anything that is
either significant, or important. You don't have to include ASL from the
start. However, designing/planing for ASL video in video from the start
makes it much easier to incorporate, when it can be done. (^4)

There are a couple of more criteria to be considered here, but I don't
remember what they are.

> + LibreOffice Branding and reputation

> + Licensing

Consent forms for the voice actors.
Consent forms for the actors.
Consent forms for the props.

Once upon a time, _The Creative Commons Foundation_ had a comic book
explaining what rights needed to be obtained, before making a film.

I don't remember if it was that comic book, or another book, that
covered the interplay of the different CC licenses, and the various
consent forms needed to make a film.

> + Maintainability

The video editor will need to pull together, and keep in sync:
* The Audio Captioning;
* The open captioning and/or the closed captioning;
* The ASL Video in Video;
* The audio content;
* The video content;

Is a dedicated AV content team needed here?

> + Other relevant issues

A11Y requirements are equally important.

Writing the Audio-Captioning script will be the hard part.
Ideally, there is an individual who does nothing but write the
audio-captioning script(^3).

Narrating it will be the second hardest part.

Task # 1: A formal, comprehensive, style manual for all video documentation.

^1: YouTube has more genres of Rules 34 in action, than PornHub. It is a
tossup as to which has the more explicit examples. YouTube is the hands
down winner, in terms of whose content violates the most laws, in the
most countries.

^2: For countries with local content production rules, the hardest part
of compliance, is knowing what the specific restrictions are.

^3: If the script is comprehensive enough, it might be possible for the
audio captioning to be written, before shooting has been completed.

^4: Green screen the Sign Language video. Shooting can be either before,
or after the video has been done.

Before being deployed, organizations require the software to meet
certain requirements. In this specific instance, both Section 508, and
ADA. If those checkboxes aren't ticked, LibO won't be considered.

Expecting an organization to fork LibO, simply to ensure compliance with

One of the vices of agile development is that documentation is
considered to be, at best, unnecessary. This applies for both developer
documentation, and user documentation.

Whilst the theory is that Agile Development has the following for End
User Documentation Creation:

* using a topic-oriented approach such as the Darwin Information Typing
Architecture (DITA) or Information MappingTM
* leveraging user stories to produce task-oriented documentation
*  applying minimalist principles
* participating as an active team member

the reality is that the usual Agile Development creed on end user
documentation is _They Ain't Gonna Read It So Why Bother Writing It_.

>This is one of the biggest open source projects and changes in code (and UI
>and documentation) affect not only many community members participating in the
>project on different tasks, but millions of users.

The other part of the equation, is that there were/are features and
capabilities in LibO that virtually nobody other than the original
developer knows exist. Features that never made their way into any
user-documentation, and only got one line in a developer synopsis.

By way of example, which version of Logo is embedded within LibO?

Only slightly more esoteric is which version of R does LibO have hooks
for? (Who needs VBA when you've got R?)

Now wondering if the Flight Simulator game was removed from LibO.

> So we do need to copy or thoroughly adapt some of the "corporate" workflow

Sun practiced waterfall development, in which specifications for
everything were written out in advance.

TDF practices agile development, in which nothing is specified until
after delivery.

The adoption of these models reflect what was considered to be "best
practices" when the organization started developing the program.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these models.

>but there must be a workflow where such changes, when already thought through
>by its native team,

The thinking through, as such, happens during/after construction, not
before construction.

This is why the _only_ way that l10n teams can get a hint of what will
happen, is to have a designated l10n team member, whose sole function is
to sit in on each and every call, and follow both the Bugzilla, and
Commits list, and the use-case and user-story storyboards for each
proposed function, capability, etc.

I realize that that is literally a full time job.

_Section 508_ is a US Law.

This is the federal regulation (^1) that requires government agencies,
and organizations with government contracts, to make _everything_
accessible to those with disabilities. ADA is a different law in the
United States, and it applies everywhere.

For a blind person, Audio-Captioning of a video, is a "reasonable
accommodation".
For a deaf person, Close-Captioning of a video is a "reasonable
accommodation".
For the deaf-blind, neither of those options are usable. What does work
is a transcript of both the audio-captioning and the closed-captioning,
but even that is generally considered to be little more than a work-around.

Is an audio-captioned transcript available?
Is a closed-captioned transcript available?

_If_ both of those are available, and integrated into one document,
then, if that was placed within the video, such that a deaf-blind person
could read it, it _might_ be Section 508 compliant.

Audio-captioning takes a long time. Budget one minute for each second in
the video. A five minute video would take 300 minutes to audio-caption.

>BTW I'm sure Olivier didn't want to make wrong but didn't realized the

Section 508 is the type of regulation that nobody pays attention to,
unless they have a11y requirements.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the video fails legal criteria in
Canada, for a very different set of reasons --- not locally produced.

>We need to enhance the help files,

True.

Several times this year, I've started to write documentation, but it is
a huge task, that feels utterly overwhelming. Even breaking it down into
sub-tasks of sub-tasks of sub-tasks has an air of intimidation to it.

(About a year ago I concluded that the only way forward, was to throw
away all of the existing documentation, and rewrite everything from
scratch, because so much had changed, and the future promised even
bigger changes, with even less advance notice. Shortcuts that worked in
4.0 don't work in 6.0. Functionality that was present in 4.0 doesn't
exist in the 6.0.3 daily build. OTOH, one can do things in the 6.0.3
daily build that aren't doable in 5.x.)

>I'm only sad that we are not part of the discussion when we are highly

What has been periodically discussed, is listing topics for which

being that the articles could be massaged for the specific output media
format. In theory, this would mean documentation was consistent across
media formats, and, when the base article was updated, it would ripple

In practice that hasn't has happened.

I'd hazard that the following are the primary reasons why that
hasn't/won't happen:

* Topic Completeness;
* Document reuse is, at best, non-trivial;
* This is not how ODF Authors has historically created documentation;

Topic Completeness

Going by the Design Survey for Draw, the following are the most common

* Flowcharts;
* UMLs;
* Drawings;
* Block Schemas;
* Block Diagrams;
* Algorithms;
* Vector image editing;

Will an article that describes how to do Block Schemas with Draw,
suffice for those that want to know how to do a Block Diagram?
Will a how-to for UMLs suffice for algorithms?

Equally problematic is appropriate indexing.

One can write a great article describing how to create and use Radar
Charts with Calc, but will it occur to anybody to also index the article
under Star Plots, Spider Charts, Polar Charts, or any of the dozen other
names used for that type of chart?

Document Reuse is Non-trivial

Every type of media has its own set of editing and layout requirements.
* The purpose of the material affects how it is formatted. By way of
example, a psychology research article will be formatted according to
_The APA Publication Manual_ guidelines, whilst a research article on
the Bible will be formatted according to _The SBL Handbook of Style_;
* The target audience affects both vocabulary and syntax. Look at the
textual differences between the British and the American edition of any
book that was first published in England;
*The output format affects how material is put together. Consider the
differences between a script for a theatrical play, a script for a film,
a script for a radio play, and a script for a TV production;

ODF Authors document creation history

What is useful, is examining why things are currently done the way that
they are. A switch to "topic orientated articles" as a focal point
requires a major shift in the creative psyche of ODFAuthors.

As far as switching to DITA goes, the first step would be for
LibreOffice to be able to import/export to that markup language. Until
that happens, adopting DITA is a non-starter, with topic focused
articles as being the closest possible adoption.

More precisely, it is the result of a deliberate policy to _not_ have a
formal team to translate the strings into English.

As such, whenever somebody decides to clean up the English translation,
were the translators paid normal translation rates, it would cost
roughly US$1,000 per string, per location, regardless of any change in

What should happen is:
Source document: Whatever variant of English/Pidgin the devs, etc. write in.

Target Document:
* French;
* German;
* Spanish;
* English;
etc;

* _The Chicago Manual of Style_. University of Chicago Press;

I'll grant that the absence of a specific edition of _The Chicago Manual

 The dev guide to creating help files can be found here:

 and a somewhat dated edition here:
 http://www.openoffice.org/documentation/online_help/

One needs to find:
* Helpauthoring.oxt.

work on the built-in help documentation.

As best as I can determine, there is no documentation on how to use
either the template, or the extension.

The other barrier is setting up GIT/Mercurial/whatever SVN is really
used, on one's local system, to import the data onto one's system.

sudo apt-get install GIT is easy enough, but to use it is a slightly

Over the years, individuals and organizations have submitted extensions

OOo, and then LibO or AOO.

After I wrote that email yesterday, I went browsing the LibO and AOo
extension sites, and only two extensions popped up under a search for
project management. DatabaseRangeManager, and AuthorSupportTools.
* DatabaseRangeManager, when correctly configured, ensures that sane
values are inserted into spreadsheets. (I didn't test this extension out.)
* AuthorSupportTools looks like a fork/updated version of Writer Tools,
and Writer Extras. In both LibO 4.3.2 LibO 5.0 beta, it crashed on me,
with an unsupported Java call. It wouldn't install in EuroOffice 2014.

At Libreoffice Templates, there is a Gantt Chart Template, and a Project
Manager Database.
* I used The Gantt Chart Template for a project a while ago, and it
works fairly well, provided one has a list of required resources, and
all the other data it requires, before creating the chart. (This is a
major issue with Gantt Charts.)
* I just briefly looked at the Project Manager Database, and it looks
promising. However, I haven't tried it out, so looks may be not be accurate.

There are ten templates at Apache OpenOffice Templates that purport to
be for project management. The ones I looked were straight conversions
from Excel. At least one required whatever scripting language Excel
uses, to be available.

Something I didn't find, that I thought I'd seen, but on reflection
probably only saw the spec sheet/wishlist of, was an extension that kept
the data in BASE, used Calc for data input/output, exported
dates/schedule to IC and Lightning, and sent reminder/status report
emails via Thunderbird.

http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/resources-for-contributers

Wandering through the projects listed in the column on the left hand
side, will provide a more current status of the documentation process.

http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/ is where to start, to
find a reasonable current list of what is being done, in English.

 Is it fair to say that I could just pick something to work on because,
 essentially, little to nothing is being worked on?

Most of the focus is on the core manuals:
* Getting Started;
* Writer;
* Calc;

Secondary manuals are:
* Draw;
* Impress;

Tertiary manuals are:
* Math;
* Base;

If you know contemporary geek German, and want to help get the material
ready for LibO 5.0, my suggestion would be translate the German manual
on Base into English, then update it to LibO 5.0.

I just discovered that _Using Assistive Technology in LibreOffice_
hasn't been updated since 2010, and at that, it is extremely incomplete.
«IMNSHO, this document should be platform specific, describing how the
various a11y do, or more commonly don't work with LibO, and what the
viable workarounds are.»

 or they aren't doing anything simply because they're getting lost in such a
 huge project

Part of it is that there are very few people producing anything in the
way of documentation. This applies both to creating original content,
and translating existing content from one language into another language.

Part of it is that there is a lot of work to be done, but no single
document that either lists everything that needs to be done, or even
lists everything that is currently being worked on.

«Creating that groups of documents would be a good test of the
functionality of the Project Management tools for Lib0.»

especially if those volunteering are new to documentation.

That is a good point.

Some people have selected their own specialty within documentation, and
are working on it at a glacial speed.

 Defaulting to CC/AL, in my opinion, means to legally steal the work of all

The issue is that there is nothing in non-legalese that explains the

For all practical purposes, the database component of OOo was treated
like the red haired stepchild. Under the TDF, LibO has simply continued
that mistreatment.

 I'm planning to try using it as interface to an sqlite backend very soon, as
 that engine will surely meet my needs.

When the discussion about which _additional_ database engine OOo should
include. HSQLDB won, and SQLite lost. From my POV,the only reason HSQLDB
won, was because it used Java. At the time, it was technically inferior
to SQLite.

In an ideal world, there would be an extension that installs SQLite as
if it were built into LibO, and provide a usable UI for database
creation, editing, and viewing.

 but the real issue for me isn't the db engine but the interface.

This relates to who creates databases.

There is a lot of useful theory, and practice in database construction
and maintenance. For most projects, applying that theory would be
helpful. Which is why database designers are very reluctant to allow
non-database designers to create databases. Or, more bluntly, don't
like pre-built tools that non-database designers can use, to create, and
use databases.

The simple reality is that when there is not an obvious, easy way to
construct a database, people will use spreadsheets, blithely ignoring
the fact that spreadsheets can, and will destroy their data. Then, since
most people use spreadsheets instead of databases, development of
database tools for Joe Sixpack gets lowered in priority, eventually
reaching the point that databases for mortals are considered irrelevant.

 I need to be able to design and run forms. If I don't use Base to do
this, what else is there in the opensource world?

PERL, Python, Ruby, etc.

 I'm a bit baffled by the database engines that present themselves to the
world bare. Apparently one just writes one's own interface for them,

Historically, database engines have shipped without an interface. The
user was expected to write their own UI. This presents the fewest
restrictions on the database designer.

By way of example:
I create resources for various Bible study programs. These all use
databases for the content. With a generic UI, I can't force record 31102
to be Revelation 22:21, or validate Vulgate versification as it is
entered. With a custom UI, Vulgate versification can be input, and the
data automatically converted to KJVA versification.

For the non- IT-professional this is essentially a non-starter.

Database designers are the last hold out in the IT World, thinking that
they are gods, and nobody else is pure enough to do what they do.

All that said, I do think that a manual that focuses on using the Base
component as a front end to PosgreSQL, MySQL, Mariadb, Drizzle, MS
Access, etc. A second manual, focusing exclusively on SQLite might be
justified.

 Go forward with using Base as frontend to sqlite (which looks really

The only thing that _SQLite Manager_ is good for, is eye candy.
Databases can only have one table, and there is a limit on both the
number of fields, and number of records it can hold.

The major problem with the SQLite extension for OOo, was that it wasn't
updated. Changes in either SQLite or the Base component were not
incorporated into the extension.

Arguably, a minor issue is/was that it relied on the Base component for
the UI. Something that doesn't work to well, when dealing with binary
blobs as data.

 The key to is constructing a domain specific language (easy with ruby),
 reserving direct SQL access for rarely encountered needs (as is normally
 done), and do output and input via text files. No pretty GUI, but real
 results for sure. I can live with this, AND it just might be useful to
 other people.

That pretty much is the simplest way for Joe Sixpack to get data into a
database, when all they want to do, is have their data in a database.

The last time I saw a database front end that required virtually nothing
of the user, was for a shareware clone of dBase 3 that was out of Redmond.

 Sad what you say about the database design community, but all too true.

They do have valid points. However, for the typical database used by
Joe Sixpack, the only data normalization that is needed, is that the
correct data is put in it in the first place.

 Spreadsheets as an alternative? May the gods preserve us from that dark
 day.

The Human Genome Project is just one major scientific research,f or

 Beyond the Klaibson's ebook, we have another book about completion of course
 work formatting (like monographys). I think can be a good idea translate it
 to English, if don't exists another similary. It is Creative Commons as
 well.

Could you be specific about which book you are referring to:
* Apostila do Curso Básico de LibreOffice;
* Faça seu TCC usando o BrOffice Writer;

Both of them are CC-BY-SA 3.0 BR

In reading through them, I didn't think either of them were too
specific to Brazil to be useful for those outside of Brazil.

When I read it, I instantly thought cheat sheet.

IMNSHO, the only addition it needs, is how to do spell checking, and it
would be perfect for the LibreOffice NA DVD. (Maybe the measurements
would have to be converted to inches, to satisfy people in the united
states.)

 Is there a tool to show what fonts are being used in the document?

TestFonts can generate a list of fonts used in a document. That doesn't
mean that it catches fonts used in the wrong place, thought.

You can obtain it from
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/TestFonts .

Note: It works with some builds/versions of LibO, but not with others.
