First there were motorcycles

2001-06-11 Thread Chris Rhine

Wow, what a night. I don't know how to do this without giving a set list or spilling
any surprises. I can say that I had a great time at the Canyon Club last night. I
finally got to meet people who have, until now, just been names on the list. From the
motorcycles to the encore the guys were fantastic. The new songs are all even better
live than they are on SR. Two years is way to long to go between Doobie shows. It will
never happen again. Thanks to Lori for for everything that she did for us. I'm sorry
for being so vague, but I really don't want to give anything away. See everybody in a
couple of days.

Now wait a minute, I just saw Bad Co. last week (they were as much Free as they were

Canyon Club

Well,

I finally gave in and got Canyon Club tickets. Three days before HOB. So I will really
be in the mood for the convention. My son went to a batting cage out in Agoura. My
wife called me from the box office at the club and asked me if she should get tickets.
What was I supposed to say, NO?

Re: Doobies Musical Tastes

2001-05-14 Thread Chris Rhine

That is from Delaney Bonnie Friends around 1969 or early 1970. The band also
included Dave Mason, George Harrison and Rita Coolidge among others. So it is very
possible that Eyes of Silver was done with that in mind. It would be interesting to
find out. I will try and ask Tommy next month at the convention if I get a chance to
talk to him.

A few weeks ago on the radio I heard a recording of Clapton in concert

performance was, but it sure did sound a lot like Eyes of Silver (I came in
after the song had started and at first thought it was the Doobies from the
sound of the guitars). Made me wonder if he had taken a cue or two from the
Doobs. Maybe there's a mutual admiration thing going on? ;-)

Re: Non-Doobie/A message to the new members

2001-05-08 Thread Chris Rhine

You will also find postings that seem off topic, such as the toy drive, blood drive or
various benefits for the NVF that are not. These are causes that are important to the
Doobies and we have tried to do our part to help. Some people (who shall remain
nameless but her initials are Cinderella) post things that have no purpose except to
be strange and amuse people. We look forward to them. We are just here to have fun in
a Doobie kind of way. If things get out of hand (as they sometimes do) our fearless
leader steps in and puts us back on track. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Ron, I know what you're saying about keeping it Doobie oriented, but you
have to realize that many people on this list have been here for years
and this list is more than just a fan club. Occasionally there will be
posts that are off topic, but they are usually posted with good
intentions by people who care STRONGLY for their friends on this list.

There is no way to keep it 100% Doobie oriented when you have the type
of bonding and the special friendships that have been formed on this
list. This is not like your typical average Rock 'n' Roll mailing list.
It's very unique and to be a part of it you have to endure some
off-topic posts to find the true gems that you won't find elsewhere. The
depth of knowledge of many of the members here is stunning! The news and
information you get here can NOT be found anywhere else on the Web, period.

Just wait until there is another Doobie Birthday. You'll see posts like:

Happy B-Day Tommy!

And then someone else will post:

Yeah, Happy B-Day Tommy!

And then before you know it, you've got 50 messages in your in-box
telling Tommy how much we love him. It isn't going to stop but you WILL
hit the delete key and stay on the list because of the contributions by
the people that know this band MORE thoroughly than some of the members
of the Doobie's themselves!

Please try and understand where people are coming from and know that you
can't enforce rules about what should and what shouldn't be posted on a
mailing list. All you can do is hope that it's kept to a minimum and
enjoy the ride. There is much knowledge and happiness to be found
amongst the off-topic stuff on this amazing list.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet. The Dodgers used to have what they called Rock
Around the Park. They had a free concert after games a couple of times a year. One of
them was The Doobies and George Thorogood. Another was Joe Walsh. Unfortunately they
also had KC and the Sunshine Band and the Village People. My son loved it. It was hard

I have enjoyed my time with the fan club up until this time but I feel

Ironic, isn't it

2001-04-06 Thread Chris Rhine

I entered a contest a couple of months ago sponsored by VH1. It was a trivia quiz
about the Hall of Fame. The winner got a trip to the induction dinner. One of the
questions was: Which of these classic rock artists is not in the Hall of fame? The
answer, of course, was the Doobie Brothers. That hurt, but I finished the quiz anyway
and sent it in. Yesterday I received a package from VH1. It turns out I won second
prize. It was a $25 gift certificate to Blockbuster, an ATT phone card with 300
minutes on it and a really nice leather bound CD case. To top it all off I also got a
denim jacket with a patch on it saying Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2001. I
think I am going to sew an X over the patch and get myself a big Doobie patch to put
on the back.

Oh well,

Re: Who are the doobfans?

Gary you don't have to turn 30 if you don't want to. I've been 29 for years, just ask
my kids. You just have to keep adjusting your year of birth. Unfortunately this means
that as of next year I will have been a Doobie fan for longer than I have been alive.
But hey, that's possible isn't it?

OK, my turn I guess

My name is Gary Banton (a.k.a The Limey Doobie), I'm 29 years old (30 in
about 6 weeks time! aaaggghhh!! help!!!) and I live near Epsom, Surrey which
is just south of London in England! I was born and raised in Wimbledon,
London (home of the tennis championships) and have a brother Paul
(married/lives in Australia) and sister Debra (single/lives in London).

I am single, though in a serious relationship with a very exotic beautiful
half-Balinese 'Tia Carrera' lookalike called Linda! YUM!! I still don't know
how I got her!!?!?!

My fave bands include The Doobies (of course!), Chicago, KISS, REO
Speedwagon, Steely Dan, Ambrosia, Queen, Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin
Lizzy, Atlanta Rhythm Section House Of Lords... I like most forms of music
except hardcore dance/rap...

I'm a semi-pro bass player in the evenings and I work in Music Copyright
Royalties for PRS in the daytime. PRS is the UK equivalent of your ASCAP
BMI. I play bass, as Gene Simmons, in the UK KISS Tribute Band 'Dressed To
Kill' (see http://www.kissinuk.com/tribdtk.htm) which has enabled me to
travel the world playing and firebreathing (!!!) at Fan Conventions and our
own shows in Japan, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Sweden Norway.
I was also lucky enough to have a CD released with a band called 'Mystic
Game' which I also toured Romania Poland with.

I had always liked the songs of The Doobie Brothers but up until about 5 or
6 years ago I didn't really know who they were. I first saw them live with
Foreigner at London Wembley Arena on a co-headline tour in about 95 or 96
and I was blown away by them! I immediately bought everything I could find
by them and especially fell in love with the Tom Johnston period up to, and
including, the classic Stampede. Tiran Porter's wonderful basslines
instantly elevated him to my 'bass hero' status alongside Peter Cetera
(Chicago) and Gene Simmons (KISS).

The next time I saw the Doobs was at the Saratoga Convention 1999 where I
had the pleasure of interviewing them all (including Tiran) and saw 3 great
shows. They were all very gracious with their time and I would like to thank
them ll again for their approachability. I returned about 6 weeks later for
3 shows of the Chicago/Doobie double bill (how could I miss this?!?) in
Virginia Beach VA, Bristow VA Charlotte NC and had the privilege of Laurin
Susie and Miles' hospitality during my stay. Most recently, I came over
again for the 2000 Convention in Saratoga. Unfortunately, due to poor
finances (I'm still paying off the last 3 trips!!) I won't be able to make
this year's LA Convention, a shame as I'd love to meet The Skunk!!!

I have met and made many good friends in the is fanclub including Laurin
Susie, Miles Lumbard, Ed Contreras, Steve Wice, Marla, Marti, Doobie Dan,
Doobster, Nancy, Steve Debbie, Rick Santangelo, etc etc (too many names to
list but you know who you all are!!) and have had a dream come true by
becoming very good friends with my bass hero... yes, the one and only Tiran
Porter! I consider myself VERY priviliged and try not to take ANY of it for
granted!

Well, that's me... sorry it was so long...hope I haven't bored any/all of
you..!

Take care all,

Gary (The Limey Doobie!)
