Hi, I came along to the last meeting so it's probably about time I introduced myself on this list. I'm a software engineer working for Red Hat, mainly on areas to do with printing. I will try to come along to the Bournemouth meetings -- I live locally. I don't have a car so I'm unlikely to be able to make it to any that are further afield. Try the CWJobs website. You probably won't get local work, but there are requirements for scripting specialists popping up quite frequently. Good luck! Re: [Dorset] Boot up fault Ubuntu 10.04
Hi Clive, So it's complaining that /tmp/.X11-unix exists but it isn't a directory that has `drwxrwxrwt' as its permissions. That directory is created by /etc/rcS.d/S70x11-common so for some reason that either isn't working, or it's work is being trampled afterwards. There's been some progress. I've raised a bug on the `chmod 1777' in /etc/init.d/x11-common that attempts to set the permissions on /tmp/.X11-unix to drwxrwxrwt. (If you think that should work, given we're root, think again before the spoiler in the bug report. :-) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/623294 and what does ls -ld / /tmp /tmp/.X11-unix show now, when it's all working? Clive, it would be helpful if you were to do that command just before shutting down and record the result. Then we'd be able to see if there's a pattern that matches whether the following boot works or not. I'd suggest (date; ls -ld / /tmp /tmp/.{ICE,X11}-unix) ralph.txt If you wish, after a successful boot you can edit the file and add an OK line. Cheers, Ralph. -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-09-07 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset

[Dorset] ACPI control
I have been wondering why I am having trouble setting up an HP Parallel printer, and every time I try and install anything, like cups, It terminates with an error due to acpi control. My grub file ends with a statement that I added a couple of months ago: # added 22-6-10 to enable temperature sensors GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_enforce_resources=lax If I take out this line I won't have the temperatures showing in Conky, which I guess I could do without now, But is there any better way to sort it out? Re: [Dorset] linux mag
Hi Nicky, whilst on my travels i came across a new linux magazine in whsmith, its called Linux Open Source Genius Guide Volume 1. I saw it today. It's a spin-off from the _Linux User_ people I think, I suspect a lot of the content is hewn from previous issues of the magazine. and its massive with over 200 pages, it has tutorials aswell as the usuall stuff that a computer mag has, but at £14.99 its a bit expensive, the free dvd has lots of software including googles new operating system which is essentially based on ubuntu. One of the other Linux magazines also had a spin-off, a big carboard thing for a tenner. i usually buy linux format, i have tried linux magazine but that one seems to be for those that use linux in their jobs. i just wondered what do other users in the dorset lug like to read? I flick through all of them in WHS and _Linux Format_ seems to be the best from my point of view, but not good enough to make me shell out £6.49, especially for a DVD I don't want. :-) The other two, _Linux User Developer_ and _Linux Magazine_ are a shade cheaper at just under £6. Out of curiosity I picked a few car, camera, and caravan magazines at random and they all came in at £3.95; seems we're being ripped off. Are they available in non-DVD versions? Years ago, like mid-90s, I used to subscribe to _Linux Journal_ from the USA, and that was good, but I haven't read it in years. Later, I used to see it on the shelf in Borders but that's gone now, as jr said. It seems they put articles from older issues on the web to read. http://www.linuxjournal.com/magazine Cheers, Ralph. -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-09-07 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ -- Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... Re: [Dorset] linux mag
In my earlier Linux days I used to buy `Linux Format'. I slowly stopped buying it as I discovered most of the content I could find online (in various guises, not just the actual article). If I knew someone new to Linux or someone who wanted to show off what they `could do' with Linux then I would say to give the magazine a go. -- Robert Bronsdon -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-09-07 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ -- Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ...
