Re: [Dorset] Using ZOOM on Linus
Thanks for all the comments and will try on the desktop PC as my '/' directory is nearly full with 21 of 26 Gb's. Don't know why as I've removed some progs but that's another problem for later. Will also try Ralph's idea of using the browser to our daughter in CH. Re: [Dorset] Using ZOOM on Linus
I used Zoom on Ubuntu MATE 18.04 the other week, It was a support call with a vendor so didn't use a webcam but voice and screenshare was ok. I used the deb file from the Zoom site. There is also the option of running Zoom within the browser which should be fine for voice and video, while the browser only version allowed me to show my screen, they couldn't control it which is why I went to the .deb install. The same thing that's often done with other packages, like Adobe Flash and the Microsoft core fonts for the Web, as a workaround for restrictions on distribution. I can't say whether it works or not, as I've never come across it before. I would probably try the .deb directly from their download page. I tried the other way: https://flathub.org/apps/details/us.zoom.Zoom[1] I found the process a bit convoluted because I'd never used flatpaks before, but eventually got it to install. Particularly obscure was that after I'd followed the procedure at the link, I then had to run the installation in the shell which resulted in: *terry@OptiPlex*:*~*$ flatpak install zoom * ID Arch Branch Remote Download* ✓] org.freedesktop.Platform x86_64 19.08 flathub 224.2 MB / 238.2 MB ✓] org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.defaultx86_64 19.08 flathub 94.9 MB / 94.9 MB ✓] org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-435-21 x86_64 1.4 flathub 103.3 MB / 103.3 MB ✓] org.freedesktop.Platform.Localex86_64 19.08 flathub 16.7 kB / 318.2 MB ✓] org.freedesktop.Platform.openh264 x86_64 2.0 flathub 918.1 kB / 916.8 kB ✓] us.zoom.Zoom x86_64 stable flathub 72.7 MB / 72.7 MB *terry@OptiPlex*:*~*$ I was then left with a rather obscure launcher which is buried in /var/lib/flatpak/app/ us.zoom.Zoom/ (how bizarre!) which seems to be clickable. I then got a dialogue called 'Zoom Cloud Meetings' and choices of 'Join a Meeting' or 'Sign In'. I selected Sign In and created an account. Once I had logged in I was provided with a dialogue which will allow me to Setup a new meeting, Schedule a meeting, Join a meeting or Share the screen. So I obviously haven't actually set up any meetings yet, but everything seems to work OK, including the Camera and Audio settings. -- Terry Coles [1] https://flathub.org/apps/details/us.zoom.Zoom -- Next meeting: BEC, Bournemouth, Tuesday, post-lurgi 20:00 Check to whom you are replying Meetings, mailing list, IRC, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread, don't hijack: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk

Re: [Dorset] Using ZOOM on Linus
I had a similar situation and found that tryin to connect with Zoom on Linux complained when attempting to run xdg-open, with an alert saying "Failed to open URI zoommtg:// web04.zoom.us/join?action=join=yadayadayada". Since I am running a Linux VM on a Windows laptop I just opened it in Windows instead. A quick Google implied that there are issues that can be worked around but not easily. best regards, 웃 Victor Churchill, Netley Abbey, Southampton 07970 844083 On Thu, 26 Mar 2020 at 13:44, Keith Edmunds wrote: > On Thu, 26 Mar 2020 11:38:48 +, ci...@cewland.uk said: > > > Does Zoom work and is there any problem with it please? > > Try it! [Dorset] Using ZOOM on Linus
Hi all We are both OK but we are being asked to go onto Zoom so w can use video linking with various groups (family in CH, Lace groups in UK & Africa & Australia). My question is:- Linux Mint 19.08 has it in the repository but comments something about it being a wrapper only. Does Zoom work and is there any problem with it please? -- C A Wills -- Next meeting: BEC, Bournemouth, Tuesday, post-lurgi 20:00 Check to whom you are replying Meetings, mailing list, IRC, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread, don't hijack: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk
