Could someone point me to a source for the little two-pole relay plug
for the back of the AC-4 power supply, which I use to key an

in place with duct tape, not an elegant way to do it, but it works!

eBay is a great place, and makes a global market which makes the

I have to disagree with your statement. This is a good place to discuss this
issue. Guys like myself that buy Drake equipment from E-Bay could have been
made aware before we purchased a dud.

I had an unpleasant experience with this seller as well. If I had been
cautioned before I dealt with him, I would have been more careful.

This is a Drake list and as far as I am concerned, anything relating to
Drakes, selling, repairing, operating or any other matter is pertinent.

"Darwin, Keith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

I do a lot of e-bay transactions, both as buyer and seller. So far,
very few issues and nothing unresolved. E-bay provides a source of gear
that is hard to find elsewhere and provides a pool of buyers that is
hard to duplicate. It works, period.

I disagree with people who say e-bay means you'll pay too much or
everything there is junk, or (my favorite) that all e-bay sellers are
crooks. Sorry, but a lot of sellers are no more honest or dishonest
than the sellers on QTH.com or any other classifieds site.

In all cases you need to know what your buying and do the deal with your
eyes open.

Personally, I prefer e-bay sellers with feedback rating in the 100's,
accumulated over many years to the sellers with ratings in the
thousands. A feedback rating in the 1000's means he's a dealer and
you're more likely to be treated as a number. Three of the four issues
I've had have been with these sellers.

And I very much appreciate the "warning" about Radio-Mart. I've looked
at his stuff and have been tempted many times, but so far he's never had
just what I was looking for. With the new info, I can be a bit more
wise about reviewing what he has for sale. Thanks!

Re: [drakelist] RE: On Selling Drake Gear

2006-11-30 Thread W4AWM

Hi Lee and everyone,

I had a similar experience with an estate last year. The local vulture
swooped down almost before the decased was buried and made off with the good
stuff
for pennies on the dollar.

About 3 months later, a friend called and asked if I wanted to look at what
was left with him. Thre was a gigantic amount of surplus gear, mostly WW II and
much of it in decent shape considering its age. Some of it I recognized and
some I didnt, but I told the XYL that I thought there was substantial money
there and that iof she wasn't in a hurry, I would see if I could help her out.
She was ready to give the stuff away again for pennies, but she told me to go
ahead. I did not sell any of it on thet place. I have sold there before and
will
again, but there was entirely too much stuff to start with pictures,
descriptions and you know what all else. I actually expected to sell the bulk
of it
locally but to my surprise, that didn't happen.

I put out quires about the gear I wasn't familiar with on some of the
reflectors which resulted in some immediate high dollar sales which blew my
mind. I
inventoried everything and posted it in its respective catagory on some of the
reflectors, Eham and the ARRL site. While I was there, I took some digital
photos of unusual pieces and others that I thought might be questioned. Orders
poured in. Like you, I found myself in the packing and shipping business. I
didn't expect that to happen, but it did. Before it was done, I was on first
name basis with all the clerks at the local Fed-Ex office! The good thing is
that the gas prices were still reasonable back then, since the estate was some
45
miles away from here and I made dozens of trips up there to get sold gear,
bring it back to the home QTH to pack and ship. I did not charge for packing,
only the actual Fed-Ex charge.

To take any hanky panky posibilities out of the deal, all payments were sent
directly to the estate from the buyers and the estate cut me a check for
receipted shipping charges.

I am happy to say that all this resulted in a huge amount of money for the
estate at no charge to them. It was one of those random acts of kindness and I
really enjoyed seeing how much money I could bring in. By the way, everything
was sold as is with a no return policy. I tested nothing, described it as
truthfully as possible and had no complaints that I heard about.

Happy holidays and 73,

John, W4AWM

I have only been stung once on e-bay and that was when I first started
buying vintage equipment there. I bought a Vibroplex bug that was in
mint condition and had been tested. When it arrived, the broken parts
were also lovingly packed in the box. It was missing the connection
straps underneath the base. It was not even functional, much less
tested. Fortunately, Mitch there at Vibroplex had the necessary parts
and it now works just fine. His is a rare company that can supply parts
for a product more than 50 years old. I expect that most equipment that
is vacuum tube based is as cantankerous as I am, and it is mostly newer
than I am. So, one can plan on having some work to do with anything
bought on e-bay or elsewhere. My objection is that vendors misrepresent
equipment they are selling. I have bought items which the seller was
honest and said that there were problems. No problem with that. I
prefer buying and selling on lists such as this or on the Boatanchors
list, or from people I know from these lists. Still a thread like this
is useful since it makes me aware of potential problems in advance.

[drakelist] TR7 PS7 Sherwood 7SP for sale

2006-11-30 Thread Paul
Have the following for sale:

TR7...the goodworks all bands, full output. Has noise blanker installed. has
1.8 & 500hz cw filters. All LED segments work. Gets good audio reports.

the bad..sticky cabinet paint. needs an alignment. display reads
slightly off frequency (reads 3.800.3 when it should read 3.800.0). Appears
someone touched one button (agc f/s )& plastic side trim with glue on their
fingers,left an ugly mark.

PS7...fair cond. Works like it should.

Sherwood 7SP speech processor / extra recive filter, with 7SP documentation.
Nice condition, has two filters installed. Wired directly into TR7 filter card.
Sherwood still sells these new, somewhere around 375.00

Asking 600.00 for all, will reluctently sell 7SP seperate from TR7. Make offer
for 7SP if that's all you want.

email me off list.

[drakelist] ON SELLING DRAKE GEAR

John,  W4AWM

SV: [drakelist] That e-bay shark....

2006-11-30 Thread Karl Henrik Laache
Hi guys

Now I think it's time to terminate this discussion. I've been following it
for a couple of weeks, and now everything that needs to be said is said.

I have been dealing with this individual a couple of times, and have nothing
to complain about. This said, I don't defend shill bidding (which is a
violation of eBay rules) or misrepresentation of the items you want to sell.
But I don’t hink this list is the proper place to handle this sort of thing.
File a complaint to eBay if you suspect fraud or other violation of the eBay
rules.

eBay is a great place, and makes a global market which makes the
ham-community even bigger than before. I check prices regularly on
different kinds of equipment, and do not see higher prices on eBay than on
the various sales lists around. And it is voluntary to bid. Those of us
who don’t like this seller naturally won’t buy from him.

This is a great place to discuss Drake-matters. Keep it that way. Keep
cool!

He obviously thinks he's really smart, but to me the serial number
phraseology suggests that the plate on the chassis may or may not be the one
that was on it when it left the factory.

Used car salesmen have been known to switch them around, and that seems to
be where his business model comes from. There's a big UK based camera dealer
with the same 'ethics' - Presumably e-bay/Paypal make too much money out of
them to care about their own reputation.

[drakelist] RE: On Selling Drake Gear

2006-11-30 Thread

"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--

I now appreciate what sellers go through when selling radio equipment on
E-bay. I have bought a lot of stuff on there but never sold anything until
this year. A friend of mine died and I helped his widow sell his fairly
extensive collection of equipment both at ham feasts and on E-bay. It has
taken me close to a year to dispose of all of it. ( I never asked,
received, nor would take a penny for my efforts). In that time I learned a
lot about selling on E-bay

You have to analyze the equipment's condition which may take some time
doing this. Otherwise you have to say, "as is" if you want to be truthful.
You have to weigh it and figure out what the shipping charges will be.
That is, if you want to be accurate. You have to take pictures and then
write up the review on the item and then put all this on E-bay. This is no
fast process. At least it was not for me. Then you have to answer all the
questions which range from proper and understandable to the insane. Then
you need to watch during the auction. Then you need to correspond with the
winning bidder. Then you need to handle the money end of it sometimes
meaning running down to your bank and deposit funds. Then you need to box
the item properly and then burn gas taking it to the Post Office or UPS and
having it shipped. You have to find the proper size and weight box. Of
course if you are trying to help the new owner out and keep costs down, the
packing takes time doing it yourself and running down to a "real" UPS
office rather then a private shipper's office which also takes a lot of
time. It didn't happen to me but I can see over time boxes will get lost
or damaged by the shipper no matter how well you mark them or package them.
That means more trips and burnt gas plus more time and then maybe some bad
feedback even though it may not be your fault. Then you get the guy who is
surprised he did not get some "free" accessories that never came with the
radio in the first place. Or, you sold a transmitter and he "thought" the
accessory power supply should have been in the box too along with the radio
free. Then you risk having a nut case not knowing anything about radios
blowing up or burning something up and thinking you should be responsible
for his damage. Or when the 45 year old piece of equipment finally breaks
2 years after he purchased it from you, he expects you to "make good" on
his purchase. Or, he wants to modify the radio and expects you to give him
unlimited technical training so he can become an expert on this device.

Yes, I learned a lot selling on E-bay. I also know, understating the
radio's condition by micro analyzing it, so I could honestly describe the
radio, cost me money and at the same time made my investment time
dramatically increase. After all was sold, I can tell you my friend's
wife and I had to really "work" to get this stuff sold through auction.
Buying .is one thing, but selling is a whole new ball game. I now better
appreciate what a seller goes through. To go through all this for an
inexpensive item is hardly worth the effort. My hat is off to those that
do it. I have purchased many small priced items I depersately have needed
off of E-bay for my radio projects. I now really appreciate what the
seller has gone through for his small reward.

2006-11-30 Thread Ron Baker

"Ron Baker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

I have been following the discussion regarding eBay and the one seller in
particular. Probably enough has been said and the points well taken. For
the moment I want to step up on the soap box for the ebay sellers.

I will agree there are a few bad sellers but you will find a certain portion
of that in every part of business. I for one have been selling on eBay for
years, mostly refurbished Drake and Collins equipment. With over 400
pieces sold to my knowledge have never had a disappointed customer and I
still have 100% feedback. I also take care of my customers, promptly answer
their questions and offer any assistance they may need to setup and operate
their purchase.

To my point, there are a lot of very good ham radio equipment sellers on
eBay. I have also bought a lot of equipment off eBay and have learned to
hard way a few times who the bad guys are. I would not discourage anyone
from buying equipment off eBay. However, I would strongly suggest before
you make a purchase, know who your seller is, his background and previous
selling experience. Check the sellers feedback, read those comments
closely, the comments say a lot about the seller. Ask the seller a
question about the sale, how fast did the seller respond, did he directly
answer the question or give a vague answer or skip over it entirely. There
is a lot that can be determined by just communicating with the seller and
how the seller responds to your inquiry.

Not to labor the subject any further, I just wanted to say there are a lot
of very good sellers of ham equipment on eBay. You just need to be a
careful shopper, just like you would be buying at a hamfest. Don't be
afraid to kick the tires and ask questions and go with your gut feel. Most
of the time its probably correct.

Now stepping off the soap box ;o)

2006-11-30 Thread W4AWM
Hi Doug,

Tarnishing of silver plated tank coils, switch contacts and other plated
items is normal. Unless you live in a sealed, environmentally controlled room,
there is nothing you can do about it. If you feel that you have to clean the
parts, only use a high quality silver polish that contains NO abrasives. Do not
use anything like Tar-Nex. There are also polish impregnated cloths that can be
had at fine silverwear stores. Whatever you do, do it extremely carefully, and
of course, be sure that all HV circuits have been discharged and the primary
power disconnected before beginning.

My advice is to leave it alone as long as it is working. You may wind up with
shiny components and a non working rig due to something you messed up while
cleaning. The old addage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here!

What I've used for years are pins from a discarded 8 pin (octal) tube

the wires of the gird, plate etc., solder the new wires in...the tube
pins go all the way into the AC4 jacks, so they can't short...If your
using an L4B, they work great on the amp end too

A very useful link. If you replace the "radio-mart" with any eBay ID,
you'll get just their neutral and negative feedbacks. If not very
experienced with eBay, the only thing that matters is the negatives -
ignore the positives. Look for common threads and repetitive
complaints. In this case, 97.5% positive sounds not so bad, until you
realize that 118 people were shafted and chances are that they not only
got screwed in the deal, but got their own negative feedback from

Clair -

Those two pin connectors are one of the most "unobtainium" items in the
4 & 7 Line. Even Drake gave up on them, and offered a small metal plate
with an RCA phono jack on it and two holes that matched the mounting
screws for the two pin connector in the AC-4.

If I didn't have one, I'd seriously consider doing the modification with
an RCA Phono jack like Drake did. And I'm one of the worst when it
comes to preaching the "keep it original" mantra...

Once in a great while one of the two pin connectors will show up on E*
for an exorbitant price. The last one I saw a few years ago went for
over $20...

The pins are 0.093" in diameter. Some have made a connector from #11
solid copper wire. Various schemes have been tried with plastic and/or
epoxy to build up a connector body around the two pieces of wire. #11
wire is 0.0907", and tinning it with solder should make it just about
right. I would tin it to ward off corrosion. Unfortunately, #11 is NOT
a common size (to say the least!). #10 is 0.1019", which is a little
large, and is probably what the "plug builders" used. I don't know if
that is large enough to damage the female connector or not. The pins
are spaced 0.350" c-c. A better choice might be some 3/32" dia (0.0937)
brass tubing from the hobby shop. It would give a more reliable
electrical connection to the wire. Think that's what I'd do.

internally, the tank coil, parasitic supressor, and other connecting

if the metal is actually tarnished from an environment. Is this a typical
issue, and what would be the best way to remove this without damage to the

I have to throw something in before the thread is closed...

The thing that makes me laugh the most is where he says it is a "radio
supporting a serial number x" - so the first thing that comes to mind is
whether or not he expects me to take it up with the Radio if It decides to
change its own serial number. I mean, it reads as if it's between the Radio
and I to duke it out if one day It says its serial number is 12345 and
another day it says 54321... I guess he has a knack for finding and selling
gear with symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder (not to be confused
with schizophrenia) nature which forces him to leave it up to the radio to
support its own serial number, since he is not taking it upon himself to
bear the burden of assuring the buyer what the radio's real serial number
is.

Whatever the case, it's a knee-slapper to read the descriptions.

ps. Sorry Thom, I couldn't resist...

He obviously thinks he's really smart, but to me the serial number phraseology
suggests that the plate on the chassis may or may not be the one that was on it

Used car salesmen have been known to switch them around, and that seems to be
where his business model comes from. There's a big UK based camera dealer with
the same 'ethics' - Presumably e-bay/Paypal make too much money out of them to

Buyer be ware, as the "almost mint" means missing a few tubes.

And this type thing is not just with Radio equipment. I was again enticed

was that they had been in a dishwasher and run through the dry cycle and
were all warped. Yes you can return them, at your expense so that they

[drakelist] ON SELLING DRAKE GEAR

John,  W4AWM

Re: [drakelist] That e-bay shark....

2006-11-30 Thread Jason Buchanan

eBay rarely chastises their sellers. The fancy listings that radiomart uses
cost a bundle. They probably make $400-500 a week from his listings. The
hapless buyer complaining about getting ripped off only interferes with ebay
making money. On the other hand, something interesting gets yanked by ebay
without any reason or notice - if you put up for auction a blank sheet of paper
for $5 they will yank it and give you a warning but if you put up for auction a
fraudulently represented Drake R-4B they will give the buyer a warning not to
complain! hi

The only serious buying I do is through swap.qth.net.

He obviously thinks he's really smart, but to me the serial number
phraseology suggests that the plate on the chassis may or may not be the one
that was on it when it left the factory.
Used car salesmen have been known to switch them around, and that seems to be
where his business model comes from. There's a big UK based camera dealer with
the same 'ethics' - Presumably e-bay/Paypal make too much money out of them to
care about their own reputation.

[drakelist] Fwd: L-4 Cleaning

I have read postings here about cleaning Drakes and like several of the
ideas. I have aquired an L-4 that outside looks almost perfect. However,
internally, the tank coil, parasitic supressor, and other connecting
components almost look tarnished. I don't know if this is due to heating or
if the metal is actually tarnished from an environment. Is this a typical
issue, and what would be the best way to remove this without damage to the
amplifier?

Thanks,

Doug Coffman

[drakelist] On Selling Drake Gear

2006-11-30 Thread Thom R LaCosta

Thom R LaCosta <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Over the years, I purchased items that were offered on this list...and neve had
a problem.

While I'm in no place to insist on where and how gear is sold, I have imposed
some stipulations hereand that this list is NOT to be used to shill your
auction on EBay

But, on the other hand, feel free to advertise your gear to members of the list,
ONLY if you're not in the reselling business. Those of you that are know that
you are...others on the list suspect it, and now and again, I get ticked off
that the folks "in the business" think it's perfectly fine to abuse the list
and use it for free advertising.

I've heard just about every excuse in the bookthe items are listed to help
the list members, or they come from the estate of someone andits stuff
that you've had around for the last 100 years...blah blah blah.

You wanna be in the radio businesspay your dues, and don't expect to
underwrite your venture. You wanna extract maximum bucks via an auction...don't
expect me to underwrite your money-collection efforts.

If you don't like the things above, I will not be insulted if you unsubscribe
from the list.

As far as giving fair warning to others on the list...If you must "drop the
dime" on a Ebay seller, or anyone else for that matterdon't even think about
posting it here unless you can document it. I can document every single low
life that I've nailedand the States Attorneys and Police Department tell me
a do a decent job of it.

So, now that I've grumbled, I'll crawl back in the cave and hibernate.
