I have an Arduino based DDS VFO with a buffer amplifier that drives my Heathkit

It makes the DX-20 frequency agile.

So great! HI HI

Solid state rigs, especially those from Asia is difficult if not
impossible to fix when it breaks. You will nearly always be able to find
parts for tube rigs. Keep the TR-4C as a spare if nothing else.

In order for me to enter the solid-state ham radio world I need to sell
some of my coveted Drake equipment to folk who appreciates vintage Drake
 quality and its history.

For sale is a Drake TR-4C transceiver, serial #36799 (with full set of
10-meter crystals), accompanying AC-4 power supply, MS-4 speaker, and Drake
729SR microphone. No noise blanker installed.

I purchase all three units in 2008 from Ron Baker (WB4HFN). Ron fully
re-furbished the TR-4C and re-painted its case. All units are currently in
?excellent? condition (cosmetically and functioning), and were always dust
covered and pampered in my non-smoker household. Far less than normal
usage of the rig has been made since its purchase. 95% listening, 5% short
duration transmitting. No tinkering, alterations nor tube replacements
 have been made by me.

Asking price for all three units is: $500

Shipping charges extra. Must be shipped in two separate packages.
 Carrier of your choice.

 Thank you.

Hi again,

The small schematics and all the switching sure does makes circuit tracing
a challenge...

I was also thinking along the same diagnostic lines, but hoping for a I

Already been through the switches, tube pins, variable caps, alignment,
etc as normal routine. My gut says it's a cap.

I will investigate further when I have a chance. It's a nice rig and
bench time is always good time.

Hi Richard,

Your facts are undistorted... and I do have a scope.

Thanks and 73!

   Bill V.

I have not had to deal with this problem in my TR-4 but
the fact that it affects only AM is a good clue for
isolating it. It eliminates the AF amplifier and leaves
pretty much the detector circuit. The detector is also the
first audio stage so the tube is suspect. I find it
difficult to trace circuits in Drake schematics (and others
too). I find it helpful to have a couple of large scale
prints made of the schematics and trace out the circuits of
interest with colored pencil or highlighters. That way you
can see what is going on at the switches. Drake mostly used
good quality plastic film caps so they are not so often the
cause of trouble but even plastic and ceramic caps can go
bad. I would also do the usual voodoo for older equipment,
namely to work all the screws that may carry ground and very
thoroughly clean the switch contacts. Its surprising how
much trouble these two things can cure. Also clean the tube
pins and sockets. May not help with this but poor contact at
tube pins is responsible for a lot of mysterious problems.

Hi all!

 I have an early (16k ser. #) TR-4. I’ve done all the
usual maintenance and it works great in SSB mode. The issue
is distorted AM Mode Only Receive audio. It’s the same on
either filter and not effected by signal strength. The AC-4
voltages are free of ac. There’s no hum and V2 (12AV6) is
good (swap made no difference).

 Any thoughts?

 Thanks and 73!

  Bill V.
Just to clarify (no pun intended) you are getting
distortion on received AM signals but not on SSB? Have you

The 2-NB noise blanker, for the 2-C receiver, originally sold for around $27.00

Re: [Drakelist] Drake 2-C noise blanker

2013-04-15 Thread Bill Frost
Hello,

Looks like my cut and paste didn't work.  So, I'll type the sheet

We would advise that there are several factors which should be taken into
consideration in connection with Noise Blanker operation.

First of all, it is normal for a blank noise pulse to turn off the receiver for
the duration of the pulse.  This makes a hole in the received envelope.  If the
noise has a definite frequency rate, the signal will appear to be modulated at
the noise frequency.  The noise blanker is the most effective on noise pulses
of very short duration with a relatively long time between pauses.  A prime
example of this type noise is that which is generated by automobile ignition
systems.  It is least effective with noise pulses of relatively long duration
with short spacing in between pulses: an example of this is atmospheric noise.

There are occasional conditions when an adjacent signal which you cannot hear
in the R-4A output, will operate the noise gate and produce distortion.  The
reason for this is that the bandwidth of the noise blanker IF following the
passband tuner is considerably wider than the passband filter itself.  This
broadness is a prime requirement for noise blanker operation.

It should be kept in mind that the noise blanker is not needed and therefore
should not be used, if the noise which you hear is equal to or less than the
strength of the received signal.  However, if the noise exceeds the strength of
the received signal, the noise blanker will be a definite advantage and should
be switched on.

If after the above suggestions, you feel that your noise blanker is operating
improperly, write in more detail concerning your observations and we will try
to of additional assistance.

Charles,
A large part of it depends on whether your 2-C suffers from the type of noise
(pulse type) that the noise blanker can help with. I have bad power line noise
at my QTH that a blanker won't touch.

[Drakelist] C-4 for sale

Hello Drake People,

I have a C-4 for sale. Recently I obtained a Drake line from the Toronto
club station of a Fortune 500 company. It included the C-4 I have for sale.
This item is complete. The remote switch has never been out doors. The
whole station was lightly used and is like brand new. The C-4 was probably
never used for anything except to turn the station on and off, and perhaps
meter RF power or SWR. I will consider realistic offers. Thanks for

[Drakelist] T 4 XC Help?

2012-12-12 Thread Bill skidmore
Can someone help me? I am attempting to to repair a T4XC which has been
owner repaired before, but which has been working properly on all bands.

I can not find a couple of things I see on the schematic. And I see
something else I can not account for.

I would like someone to tell me what component(s) are supposed to be
connected to the following band switch lugs:

1. On the band switch wafer between the right angle drive and
the chassis partition rearward of the right angle drive, with the
transmitter inverted, looking into the rig from above, the solder lug
closest to the observer, and nearest the bolt holding the switch wafer to
the chassis partition--- what is supposed to be connected to this lug, and
where does the other end of this component go?

2. On the same band switch wafer, rotating inward about 90 degrees from the
above lug, there are no solder lugs. The first lug you come to after this
space--- what component(s) are supposed to connect here, and where do they
go in the transmitter?

Believe me, I am not as crazy as this sounds!

The comment about the sideband filter in the TR 3 is not to be passed over
lightly. If you have a problem there, you are in deep trouble. I carefully
took the surrounding shield off my problem filter and repaired it, then put
it together again. I was lucky I didn't break something.

All the other comments, concerning historic equipment, TR 3 as a poor CW

Buy it anyway! These things keep us from going brain dead using multi-band

 Hi,
The deal killer in the TR-3 is the SB filter. They often go bad
 on
one sideband, still get some thru, but way low. Check output on 20m and
on 15m, they should be close, and above 125 watts out. Actual value
could be more (hopefully), but will depend upon alignment. Normally 15m
output will be a little less than on 20m, but not more than say 20 watts
less, if the final tubes are reasonably good. You should be able to
load up to about the same plate current on both bands.
Other than that possible problem, the TR-3 can be a good rig for
 SSB
operation, usually at a good price, also. S-meter often seems stingy,
just turn up the AF gain if needed, signals are there. Definitely check
out the p.s. and replace the bias filter cap at least.

[Drakelist] R4C Interesting Find

2012-09-01 Thread Bill Becky
My R4C seemed a bit poor in the sensitivity department so I had an idea to
improve it. I aligned the R4C pretty well but it didn't seem very lively.

So with the bottom chassis visible I took my screw driver and loosened/
tightend each screw twice on each side of the 4 rows of trimmer bracket ground.
Wow.what a difference in sensitivity mainly 160-20M and in between. I
estimate a 8-10 dB of more gain. I learned this method of re-establishing
grounds from a metallurgist(sp)ham neighbor who showed me what happens to two
surfaces create a fine film a lose bonding with time. If the two metals are
much different the faster the degradation.

Your mileage may vary. I recommend all accessible screws and nuts...it can
cure some pretty obscure problems and takes less than 15 minutes. I had to
recalibrate the S-meter because of the gain change. It should work on R4any
receiveror any old boatanchor.

[Drakelist] R4C SSB Leakage

2012-08-21 Thread Bill Becky
Hi Group I have written previously about my R4C having signal leakage in the
SSB mode only affecting the PBT control and S-meter levels.

Someone suggested that the 4NB was causing the leakage so I removed the 4NB and
put some wire jumpers as I didn't have a 4NB plug, no change. However I
ordered a aftermarket socket plug to do a sanity check..guess what..it
got worse!!! Instead of a S5 level leakage it then went to S9 with the
shorting plug??!!

I guess I've narrowed it down to something on or near the NB4 jack underneath.
So much for the sanity check..bizarre.

Hello,

Drake hasn't been Drake as you guys knew Drake for a long time.  The company
was mainly producing video and cable head end products, see their web-site.
Amateur radio manufacturing and or service was history, long gone, even with
the production of the R-8 series receivers, SW-8 etc.  The company was sold,
sold again, and recently sold again to Blonder-Tongue another video and cable
product manufacture, This company was Drakes largest competitor and is located
in New Jersey, see their web-site. Most of the Drake employees were slowly let
go, from the top down, all except for a few from sales, engineering and one guy
from service.  These people will move to Springboro Pike, there will be NO
manufacturing at this building, save for what engineering builds, manufacturing
will be done in New Jersey or .  The Drake name will be used on some
products built by Blonder-Tongue as the name Drake is well known in the video
and cable head-end market.
This is ONLY what I have heard !!!

However when I removed the bottom cover almost 6 S-Units of PB feedthrough were

the interference is being conducted by the metal bottom cover to key area's of
the bottom chassis. Next I will attempt adding metal shields to isolate
internal RF from conducting to nearby by circuits that are prone.

I have many years RF experience in a factory setting doing just this for 200

[Drakelist] R4C Questions

2012-07-01 Thread Bill Becky
Hi Group I recently obtained a Sherwood upgraded R4C (SN 22xxx), the only
Sherwood upgrade it doesn't have is the 2K Upper Lower SSB filters. It
performs very well but it has one oddity.

When in SSB mode and the PBT is adjusted Upper Lower end of travel it varies
the S-Meter from S6 middle center PBT to S1 either PBT endpoint. On CW using
the 1.5Khz, 500Hz or 250Hz it works like it should or what I'm accustom to.

I've corrected many small problems by treating grounds and filter sockets, tube
sockets from the topsidebottom side next. It just seems like I'm
getting allot of white noise or bleed through from somewhere to cause the SSB
mode oddity.

Question? How can it tell if this has the T7C version xfrmer??

These Sherwood upgrades were done 20+ yrs ago and this nice condition R4C has
sat unused for many years.

Perhaps all is typical as I don't have another to compare to.

Re: [Drakelist] Can You Identify this?

2012-01-18 Thread Bill Frost
Hello Marty,

You have obtained one of the RF/IF click boxes that was used by Drake
technicians to test and/or troubleshoot the Drake products.  These were
designed and built in house for use on several product lines.  If you go to the
Drake Museum of LA6OP and the late Jean-Marie Cherry you will find a
description of this unit that I wrote for their web-site.
http://www.dproducts.be/Drake_Museum/rf__if_test.htm

We had several dealers with service departments and we produced the RF/IF test
fixtures for each dealer that wanted to service Drake equipment on site.  They
sent their service technician down for a weeks training and they were given the
test fixture upon completion of the training.

Let me know if you have additional questions after reading the article on the
click box.

Bill,

I hope all is well with you. I recently bought this and would like to know how
it was used. Before I bought it and it arrived here I thought it had a built in
power supply (Maybe a clone of an AC-4) but apparently it was used with an
external supply for the rig under test. I see that it does have built in
supplies for the RF and IF signal generators. I also got three sheets of
schematics with it in an envelope with Amateur Electronic Service of London.
Ontario on it. I bought it from a Canadian ham with the last name of Shack.
Was this used mainly for repair or for new rig calibration?
I plan to share some pictures and what info you can give me with the Hams on
the Drake List. The rigs listed on it are the T4-X, TR-4, TR-44, TR-6, TC-2 and
TC-6. The schematics have a 1969 date on them with a Miamisburg address and
drawn by a EDF

Hello Kihwal,

If memory serves, I believe your T-4X was originally built as a T-4
reciter.
The T-4 was not a big seller, so somewhere around the end of the life of
the
T-4X, the T-4's that were in stock, where unpacked and converted into
T-4X's by

adding the VFO sub-assembly. The serial number stayed the same, as it was
already stamped on the chassis, carton, etc.

Hi All!

My name is Bill and I'm a boat anchor-aholic. ;) My shack consists of
mostly 60's era rigs that I have restored including National, Swan, Ameco, etc.
I do have some modern stuff like an R8 that I bought new and a few older Yaesu
and Kenwood rigs.

I just picked up a pretty nice B-line from a local CraigsList ad. My
original intent was to clean it up and pass it along, but now I don't want to
part with it. It had a few minor issues like the usual dirty switches and
pots, a shorted diode in the vox circuit that kept the relay pulled in, a
couple of cold joints, etc... The receiver performance is outstanding. The
transmitter is a little anemic in the audio department, but otherwise pretty
good.

One thing that I do need is a vfo dial plate for the T-4XB. I have seen
yellowed dials before, but this thing is opaque brown/black!

I hope to contribute to this reflector.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but if you don't own one of
Garey's CD's for your Drakes your really missing the boat. I am not a

them out to someone else. In the past two months my TR4C has had two
problems both of which I fixed myself with Garey's advice and being able to
refer to his CD giving detailed HI-RES pictures of the components of the
Drakes. Everything is labeled and easy to find. I was able to identify the
component I needed to check and make the necessary repairs. I owned the CD
for my Drake twins, which I sold and one for my TR4C. I just wish he would
produce one for my Collins KWM-2A. The older radios are upwards of 60 years
old and things are going to go bad, its fun and very rewarding to be able to
fix things yourself even if you are not a qualified tech.

Re: [Drakelist] R. L. Drake Co., Lobby Display youtube link

2010-09-25 Thread Bill Frost
Hello to the group,
A few details about the Drake display.  I started collecting the equipment when
Bob Drake was still around.  He had a large walk in closet behind his office,
in Miamisburg, and I started putting stuff in there, we both had the thought of
a museum somewhere in the future.  When we moved to Franklin, I designed a
museum into the Service Department lobby, in the rear entrance of the plant.
That museum sat idle for several years, as we closed the rear entrance.    A
few years ago, I was given the assignment of moving the museum to the front
lobby.
The lower left corner displays the early products, filters, etc.  John
Chenowith gave me several assemblies produced, as he was the plant manager in
the early years.  The ham gear progress's up and to the right.  The home
satellite products and commercial satellite products are on the far right side.
The items on the bottom or sitting on the floor are mainly plaques and awards
received over the years.  One of which is for having an excellent Service
Department.  There are also advertising items, collected over the years,
T-shirts, ties, pens, etc.
Unfortunately , I wasn't able to collect one of every product, but it is a nice
collection, one I am proud to have been a part of.

don't get a lot of white area without printing for each sign you buy but
they are cheap. I have tried contacting the companies that make the signs in
hope of buying blank sheets, but have never received an answer.

Re: [Drakelist] T-4XB Dial - White Diffuser Material

2010-08-08 Thread Bill Scott
In my previous resonse regarding the white diffuser replacement I probably
was not clear regarding the link I posted and the product made by
EZ Quilting by Wrights. They make a mylar sheet that is 12 x 18 that is
used for pattern making. This mylar sheet comes in various colors and is
excellent for making both the blue filter and white diffuser replacements.
One sheet can make several. I was shown this by a fellow ham who has
refurbished several Drakes and replaced the filters and diffusers. I used it
on a recent B-Line project and it works great.

If you go to this link look at the white mylar pattern material for $3.99.

[Drakelist] R-4B Recap

2010-07-08 Thread Bill Jackson
Greetings,

I am a relative newcomer to boatanchor restoration. So far, the Drakes I have
purchased have only required some basic switch cleaning and detailing to
bring them back to their original glory.

I now have an R-4B that requires the installation of a recap kit from the
Hayseed Hamfest. I am looking for some advice from the group on the techniques
they have used to replace the 4 section can capacitor with the minimal amount
of disturbance to the wiring in the radio.

I see that 2 of the 4 mounting tabs are soldered to chassis, one of them is
tucked under the audio output transformer. I also see that there is a fair
amount of wiring that runs by this can. What should I do to make sure I don't
booger up the adjacent wiring when unsoldering the can from the chassis? I
assume you clip and re-strip the leads you remove from the tabs on the can,
rather than trying to unsolder them? Should I unsolder and remove the audio
output transformer?

Also, are there any good web resources available that can educate me in some of
the better techniques in component replacement used by the experts in
boatanchor restoration?

Thanks!

[Drakelist] L-7 blew circuit breaker when turned on, what's up?

2010-06-05 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Hi,

I have arrived in Europe and the L-7 seems to have made it without damage, at
least no visual damage.

The amp was wired for 220v when I had it in the USA. Upon arrival here, I
switched the USA AC plug for a European plug. But as soon as I turned on the
amp, the house circuit breaker blew. My first thought was that I had
incorrectly installed the plug, but I have checked with an ohm meter and no
sign of a short. There is infinite resistance between each pin of the AC plug
and ground, and there is infinite resistance between each of the two pins when
the amp's on/off switch is turned off. When switched on, resistance between
the two pins is about 1 ohm, which I believe is as it should be.

There should be no polarity issue between the 2 pins, correct?

Any thoughts on what might be wrong and how to test it safely before applying
AC power again?

Re: [Drakelist] Repacement for R12 fuse resistor on L-4B and L-7 power supply?

2010-06-01 Thread Bill Dzurilla
OK, a local ham kindly gave me a spare glitch resistor as a replacement for
R12, and the Drake has been repaired, tested, and then packed for the trip.
The homebrew 5m amp has been reconnected to its internal HV p/s, tested, and
then packed. I may never find out what caused R12 to blow, because I'm
disinclined to mess with the power supply switch again. Sure would be nice to
get higher voltage on the 6m amp, because I'm sure the 3-500Z would give me
double the current 350w output with a better p/s, but c'est la vie.

Thanks to all who responded, both on the forum and offline.

Well, I have determined that the
cause of my power supply problem is R12, the .82 ohm 2 watt
resistor on the B+ output of the power supply.  It is
 visibly damaged.

I have searched this list and elsewhere and it seems there
is a split of opinion on whether to replace R12 with a
similar resistor.  Rich Measures and others have
suggested using instead a 10 ohm 10 watt wirewound
 resistor.

I am leaving for Europe on Wednesday and need to find a

Don't think I have time for any mail order.

[Drakelist] L-4B and L-7 power supply: Amp plate voltage drops to zero when PTT pressed, help please

2010-05-30 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Hello,

As you may know from my prior post, I have a homebrew 6m 3-500Z amp that I am
trying to get to work with a Drake L-7 power supply, so far without success.
The amp has an internal power supply, with the HV disconnected. I have the B+
of Drake p/s connected directly to the same spot where the B+ from the internal
p/s had been connected, and I have the B- of the the Drake p/s connected to
chassis ground.

Using a high voltage probe, today I verified that the Drake p/s is providing
2800 vdc directly on the plate of the 3-500Z, when everything is turned on but
the PTT is not engaged. But when the PTT is engaged, even with no drive, plate
voltage immediately drops to zero.

My first thought was a B+ to B- short, but this would have caused a big bang,
and nothing is banging or smoking or doing anything unusual at all. No fuse or
circuit breaker pops. When the the PTT is pressed, a DPDT relay closes. One
side activates the T/R coaxial relay, and the other side grounds the center tap
of the filament transformer via the plate current meter. These are the only
things that happen when the PTT is engaged. In the absence of a filament to
plate short (which would have self-diagnosed with a bang), I can't imagine any
reason why pressing the PTT would cause the plate voltage to drop to zero.

Anyone have any idea at all what might be going on? It almost seems like the
Drake p/s is shutting itself off when the PTT is engaged, and then turning
itself back on when the PTT is released. The Drake p/s does not have any sort
of internal shut down mechanism, does it?

Thanks for any thoughts and 73,
Bill NZ5N

[Drakelist] L-4B and L-7 power supply question

2010-05-29 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Hi,

The B- of the power supply for the Drake L-4B and L-7 goes to pin 6 of the
Cinch connector. Inside the amp, the B- is floated above ground by a one ohm
resistor. The one ohm resistor that floats B- above ground is said to be for
the purpose of plate current metering. I do not quite understand how this
resistor is needed for plate current meter accuracy. Could someone please tell
me how that works?

I have an L-7 and a homebrew amp that uses a similar power supply. However, in
the homebrew amp the B- goes directly to ground. I'm trying to understand the
difference in the configurations.

Thanks for the reply. I still don't get why the resistor is needed. The

Bill -

It's just a relatively safer way (low voltage) to measure current of a
high voltage supply. Any current that goes OUT of the supply on the
positive end MUST come IN via the negative end, or vice-versa depending
upon whether you learned your electronics in the military or civilian
schools!

Anyway, the resistor is near ground, (unless it opens!,) and so
connecting it to a panel meter is much safer than having the meter
connect across a shunt resistor somewhere up in the HV area of the supply.

[Drakelist] Using HV from L-4B and L-7 power supply on another amp

2010-05-29 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Thanks to Garey and to those who replied off-line to my question about the one
ohm resistor. May I trouble you with another question?

I have a homebrew 6m 3-500Z amp with similar circuitry to the L-7 and L-4B.
Unfortunately, its power supply is not that beefy (2000v) and I don't get full
output. So I came up with the idea of trying to connect my L-7 power supply to
the other amp.

To do this, I disconnected the homebrew amp's internal p/s HV connections
(leaving in place the internal p/s's filament, relay, and blower connections)
and attempted to connect the Drake p/s. I connected the Drake p/s's HV cable
to the homebrew amp's B+ connection, and I connected the Drake p/s's B-
connection (pin 6 of the Cinch connector) to ground on the homebrew amp. I
also grounded the chassis' together.

To turn the Drake p/s on, I jumpered pins 1 and 3 of the Cinch connector.

After hooking all this up, I turned everything on and it did not work. There
was no RF output at all from the homebrew amp. The plate current meter showed
some plate current, but much less than usual.

What am I doing wrong? All I can think of is that I'm forgetting to make some
connection, or that I have the Drake p/s AC input wired wrong. Jumpering pins
1 and 3 seems to be the equivalent of turning the Power switch to On and
turning the CW Tune/SSB switch to SSB, but perhaps I'm reading this wrong or
forgetting something.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Now with video

2010-05-19 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Many thanks to all who watched the video and emailed me with ideas. I have
watched it 50 times and I'm now convinced that the arc occurred in the plate
cap stator that has the white graffiti-like traces, as described in a prior
post. The flashes on the coil are just reflections. If you look carefully
through the plastic bubble on back of the plate current meter, you can see the
arc originating in the plate tuning capacitor.

Suggested fixes have included:
* replacing the mica caps mounted underneath the rear wafer of the bandswitch,
* replacing the plate blocking capacitors,
* polishing or totally removing the stator with the white traces,
* Carl's suggestion below to try a piece of insulation between the coil and the
cap.

Have not yet tried any of these suggestions, but please keep the ideas coming.

Thanks to all who responded on and
off line.  I removed the cover and tried it
again.  Rig was connected to a Heathkit Cantenna dummy
load.  As suggested by several, I set the Load control
to 5 at the start, to prevent under-coupling.  I made a
video of the procedure and, as you can see at:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJRyNQnkEWA
There was arcing again.  The arc occurs near the end
of the video clip, at the 1:18 mark.  You can see it on
the first 2 turns of the coil that is on top of the Plate
capacitor.  Not sure if this is a reflection or if the
coil itself was arcing.  I did not see any arcing from
 the capacitor.

Not sure how visible it is on YouTube, but I have watched
this several times in slow motion.  You can see a bit
of the rotor of the Load capacitor on the left side of the
screen, and also a bit of the output meter. At least in
slo-mo, you can see output going up as I start to turn the
Load cap to the left, then the tubes start to redden and the
 arc occurs.

If the turning of the Load cap to the left resulted in
under-coupling and caused the arc, I'm not sure how to
proceed, because output was very low with the Load cap set
 at 5.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Now with video

2010-05-19 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Thanks, John.  I noticed the black dot as well and it drove me crazy trying to
figure it out.  After many attempts to duplicate, it turned out to be the rotor
on the Load cap.  It disappears a moment before the arc because I was turning
that control to the left at the time of the arc.  That is what led me to
believe, as explained by W8JI and others, that the arcing was being caused by
inadequate loading.  When I tried again and left the Load control on 5, there
was no arcing.

I had not noticed the difference between the 2 tubes until you mentioned it.
Possibly just a result of the camera angle.  If not, what could it mean?

I notice 2 things:

The tube nearest the transformer is displaying a red plate before the
tube nearest the side panel and it appears to be more than the tube
toward the panel side.

I also notice what appears to be a small black dot near the first full turn
of the plate coil. This is not on the ceramic as far as I can tell and is not
one of the rivets holding the ceramic. It seems to disappear a split second
before the arc is heard on the sound track. I don't have the cover off my L-7
so
I can't duplicate what I am seeing bit that might be a clue to the
problem.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.

2010-05-19 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Thanks for the reminder about the cooling, Evan.  The source of the arc is
difficult to see in the video, but if you look through the plastic bubble that
forms the back side of the plate current meter, you can see the source of the
arc, in the Plate tuning capacitor.

Caution is in order when testing the amp for any significant period of time.
With the top off, the base of the tubes will not get adequate cooling.  Even
though there are slots on the bottom side of the cabinet, with the top off most
of the air to cool the tubes will come from above with little from below.

Seeing the source of the arc is difficult in the video, it almost seems like it
is coming from the green PC board type of capacitor.  Hard to tell.

Evan

Jim,

The arc occurred with a dummy load, so the antenna system is not to blame.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Now with video

2010-05-18 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Thanks to all who responded on and off line. I removed the cover and tried it
again. Rig was connected to a Heathkit Cantenna dummy load. As suggested by
several, I set the Load control to 5 at the start, to prevent under-coupling.
I made a video of the procedure and, as you can see at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJRyNQnkEWA
There was arcing again. The arc occurs near the end of the video clip, at the
1:18 mark. You can see it on the first 2 turns of the coil that is on top of
the Plate capacitor. Not sure if this is a reflection or if the coil itself
was arcing. I did not see any arcing from the capacitor.

Not sure how visible it is on YouTube, but I have watched this several times in
slow motion. You can see a bit of the rotor of the Load capacitor on the left
side of the screen, and also a bit of the output meter. At least in slo-mo, you
can see output going up as I start to turn the Load cap to the left, then the
tubes start to redden and the arc occurs.

If the turning of the Load cap to the left resulted in under-coupling and
caused the arc, I'm not sure how to proceed, because output was very low with
the Load cap set at 5.

Comments, ideas, advice?

[Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc and loose band switch knob

2010-05-14 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Hi,

I recently acquired an L-7 amp and I tried it out today. I used my Pro II as
the exciter and an amp keyer.

I got 1250 watts out into a dummy load on 40, 20 and 15, and 1000 watts out on
10. My understanding from a Google search is that this is about right, as the
power supply is not beefy enough to push it to the 1500w legal limit. However,
I did see some claims of this amp obtaining full legal limit, is this real with
the stock p/s?

There seems to be some problem on 80, unfortunately. On all bands, I started
with 20 watts drive and slowly increased the drive while tuning for max output.
When I got up to about 600 watts out on 80, I heard and saw through the meter
a blue arc. This happened twice on 80, and I did not want to try it again.
Not sure what this means, no arc on any other band. Any thoughts on what might
be wrong on 80?

I have not yet tried 160 or any of the WARC bands.

Only other issue observed is that the band switch knob is a little loose. I
tightened it as best I could but it still shifts a bit. Is this normal for an
amp of this age, and is there any fix?

Any thoughts, particularly on the 80m issue, would be appreciated.

work on either the L-7 or the L-4B.
