Hi Richard, Your facts are undistorted... and I do have a scope. Thanks and 73! Bill V. I have not had to deal with this problem in my TR-4 but the fact that it affects only AM is a good clue for isolating it. It eliminates the AF amplifier and leaves pretty much the detector circuit. The detector is also the first audio stage so the tube is suspect. I find it difficult to trace circuits in Drake schematics (and others too). I find it helpful to have a couple of large scale prints made of the schematics and trace out the circuits of interest with colored pencil or highlighters. That way you can see what is going on at the switches. Drake mostly used good quality plastic film caps so they are not so often the cause of trouble but even plastic and ceramic caps can go bad. I would also do the usual voodoo for older equipment, namely to work all the screws that may carry ground and very thoroughly clean the switch contacts. Its surprising how much trouble these two things can cure. Also clean the tube pins and sockets. May not help with this but poor contact at tube pins is responsible for a lot of mysterious problems. -- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles WB6KBL dickb...@ix.netcom.com ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

Re: [Drakelist] Drake 2-C noise blanker
Hello, Looks like my cut and paste didn't work. So, I'll type the sheet We would advise that there are several factors which should be taken into consideration in connection with Noise Blanker operation. First of all, it is normal for a blank noise pulse to turn off the receiver for the duration of the pulse. This makes a hole in the received envelope. If the noise has a definite frequency rate, the signal will appear to be modulated at the noise frequency. The noise blanker is the most effective on noise pulses of very short duration with a relatively long time between pauses. A prime example of this type noise is that which is generated by automobile ignition systems. It is least effective with noise pulses of relatively long duration with short spacing in between pulses: an example of this is atmospheric noise. There are occasional conditions when an adjacent signal which you cannot hear in the R-4A output, will operate the noise gate and produce distortion. The reason for this is that the bandwidth of the noise blanker IF following the passband tuner is considerably wider than the passband filter itself. This broadness is a prime requirement for noise blanker operation. It should be kept in mind that the noise blanker is not needed and therefore should not be used, if the noise which you hear is equal to or less than the strength of the received signal. However, if the noise exceeds the strength of the received signal, the noise blanker will be a definite advantage and should be switched on. If after the above suggestions, you feel that your noise blanker is operating improperly, write in more detail concerning your observations and we will try to of additional assistance. On the band switch wafer between the right angle drive and the chassis partition rearward of the right angle drive, with the transmitter inverted, looking into the rig from above, the solder lug closest to the observer, and nearest the bolt holding the switch wafer to the chassis partition--- what is supposed to be connected to this lug, and where does the other end of this component go? 2. On the same band switch wafer, rotating inward about 90 degrees from the above lug, there are no solder lugs. The first lug you come to after this space--- what component(s) are supposed to connect here, and where do they go in the transmitter? Believe me, I am not as crazy as this sounds! Re: [Drakelist] Drakelist Digest, Vol 54, Issue 10 TR 3
The comment about the sideband filter in the TR 3 is not to be passed over lightly. If you have a problem there, you are in deep trouble. I carefully took the surrounding shield off my problem filter and repaired it, then put it together again. I was lucky I didn't break something. All the other comments, concerning historic equipment, TR 3 as a poor CW rig, etc, are spot on. Buy it anyway! These things keep us from going brain dead using multi-band CB equipment. 73, Bill, VE3AUI On 2012-12-12 3:28 AM, drakelist-requ...@zerobeat.net wrote: Send Drakelist mailing list submissions to drakelist@zerobeat.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to drakelist-requ...@zerobeat.net You can reach the person managing the list at drakelist-ow...@zerobeat.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of Drakelist digest... They often go bad on one sideband, still get some thru, but way low. Check output on 20m and on 15m, they should be close, and above 125 watts out. Actual value could be more (hopefully), but will depend upon alignment. Normally 15m output will be a little less than on 20m, but not more than say 20 watts less, if the final tubes are reasonably good. You should be able to load up to about the same plate current on both bands. Other than that possible problem, the TR-3 can be a good rig for SSB operation, usually at a good price, also. S-meter often seems stingy, just turn up the AF gain if needed, signals are there. Definitely check out the p.s. and replace the bias filter cap at least. 73, Al, W8UT www.boatanchors.org www.hammarlund.info There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats Ratty, to Mole On 12/11/2012 12:09 AM, lane denune wrote: Hi Guys ; Considering a fully functional TR-3 from the owner of 15yrs. My R4C seemed a bit poor in the sensitivity department so I had an idea to improve it. I aligned the R4C pretty well but it didn't seem very lively. So with the bottom chassis visible I took my screw driver and loosened/ tightend each screw twice on each side of the 4 rows of trimmer bracket ground. Wow.what a difference in sensitivity mainly 160-20M and in between. I estimate a 8-10 dB of more gain. I learned this method of re-establishing grounds from a metallurgist(sp)ham neighbor who showed me what happens to two surfaces create a fine film a lose bonding with time. If the two metals are much different the faster the degradation. Your mileage may vary. I recommend all accessible screws and nuts...it can cure some pretty obscure problems and takes less than 15 minutes. I had to recalibrate the S-meter because of the gain change. However I ordered a aftermarket socket plug to do a sanity check..guess what..it got worse!!! Instead of a S5 level leakage it then went to S9 with the shorting plug??!! Hello, Drake hasn't been Drake as you guys knew Drake for a long time. The company was mainly producing video and cable head end products, see their web-site. Amateur radio manufacturing and or service was history, long gone, even with the production of the R-8 series receivers, SW-8 etc. The company was sold, sold again, and recently sold again to Blonder-Tongue another video and cable product manufacture, This company was Drakes largest competitor and is located in New Jersey, see their web-site. Most of the Drake employees were slowly let go, from the top down, all except for a few from sales, engineering and one guy from service. These people will move to Springboro Pike, there will be NO manufacturing at this building, save for what engineering builds, manufacturing will be done in New Jersey or . The Drake name will be used on some products built by Blonder-Tongue as the name Drake is well known in the video and cable head-end market. Hi Group I recently obtained a Sherwood upgraded R4C (SN 22xxx), the only Sherwood upgrade it doesn't have is the 2K Upper Lower SSB filters. It performs very well but it has one oddity. On CW using the 1.5Khz, 500Hz or 250Hz it works like it should or what I'm accustom to. I've corrected many small problems by treating grounds and filter sockets, tube sockets from the topsidebottom side next. It just seems like I'm getting allot of white noise or bleed through from somewhere to cause the SSB mode oddity. Question? How can it tell if this has the T7C version xfrmer?? These Sherwood upgrades were done 20+ yrs ago and this nice condition R4C has sat unused for many years. Perhaps all is typical as I don't have another to compare to. [Drakelist] New (to me) B Line...
Hi All! My name is Bill and I'm a boat anchor-aholic. ;) My shack consists of mostly 60's era rigs that I have restored including National, Swan, Ameco, etc. I do have some modern stuff like an R8 that I bought new and a few older Yaesu and Kenwood rigs. I just picked up a pretty nice B-line from a local CraigsList ad. My original intent was to clean it up and pass it along, but now I don't want to part with it. It had a few minor issues like the usual dirty switches and pots, a shorted diode in the vox circuit that kept the relay pulled in, a couple of cold joints, etc... The receiver performance is outstanding. The transmitter is a little anemic in the audio department, but otherwise pretty good. One thing that I do need is a vfo dial plate for the T-4XB. I have seen yellowed dials before, but this thing is opaque brown/black! I hope to contribute to this reflector. 73! Re: [Drakelist] R. L. Drake Co., Lobby Display youtube link
Hello to the group, A few details about the Drake display. I started collecting the equipment when Bob Drake was still around. He had a large walk in closet behind his office, in Miamisburg, and I started putting stuff in there, we both had the thought of a museum somewhere in the future. When we moved to Franklin, I designed a museum into the Service Department lobby, in the rear entrance of the plant. That museum sat idle for several years, as we closed the rear entrance. A few years ago, I was given the assignment of moving the museum to the front lobby. The lower left corner displays the early products, filters, etc. John Chenowith gave me several assemblies produced, as he was the plant manager in the early years. The ham gear progress's up and to the right. The home satellite products and commercial satellite products are on the far right side. The items on the bottom or sitting on the floor are mainly plaques and awards received over the years. One of which is for having an excellent Service Department. There are also advertising items, collected over the years, T-shirts, ties, pens, etc. Unfortunately , I wasn't able to collect one of every product, but it is a nice collection, one I am proud to have been a part of. 73, Bill --- On Fri, 9/24/10, Joe Loverti ww8x@gmail.com wrote: From: Joe Loverti ww8x@gmail.com Subject: [Drakelist] R. [Drakelist] R-4B Recap
Greetings, I am a relative newcomer to boatanchor restoration. So far, the Drakes I have purchased have only required some basic switch cleaning and detailing to bring them back to their original glory. I now have an R-4B that requires the installation of a recap kit from the Hayseed Hamfest. I am looking for some advice from the group on the techniques they have used to replace the 4 section can capacitor with the minimal amount of disturbance to the wiring in the radio. I see that 2 of the 4 mounting tabs are soldered to chassis, one of them is tucked under the audio output transformer. I also see that there is a fair amount of wiring that runs by this can. What should I do to make sure I don't booger up the adjacent wiring when unsoldering the can from the chassis? I assume you clip and re-strip the leads you remove from the tabs on the can, rather than trying to unsolder them? Should I unsolder and remove the audio output transformer? Also, are there any good web resources available that can educate me in some of the better techniques in component replacement used by the experts in boatanchor restoration? [Drakelist] L-4B and L-7 power supply: Amp plate voltage drops to zero when PTT pressed, help please
Hello, As you may know from my prior post, I have a homebrew 6m 3-500Z amp that I am trying to get to work with a Drake L-7 power supply, so far without success. The amp has an internal power supply, with the HV disconnected. I have the B+ of Drake p/s connected directly to the same spot where the B+ from the internal p/s had been connected, and I have the B- of the the Drake p/s connected to chassis ground. Using a high voltage probe, today I verified that the Drake p/s is providing 2800 vdc directly on the plate of the 3-500Z, when everything is turned on but the PTT is not engaged. But when the PTT is engaged, even with no drive, plate voltage immediately drops to zero. My first thought was a B+ to B- short, but this would have caused a big bang, and nothing is banging or smoking or doing anything unusual at all. No fuse or circuit breaker pops. When the the PTT is pressed, a DPDT relay closes. One side activates the T/R coaxial relay, and the other side grounds the center tap of the filament transformer via the plate current meter. These are the only things that happen when the PTT is engaged. In the absence of a filament to plate short (which would have self-diagnosed with a bang), I can't imagine any reason why pressing the PTT would cause the plate voltage to drop to zero. Anyone have any idea at all what might be going on? It almost seems like the Drake p/s is shutting itself off when the PTT is engaged, and then turning itself back on when the PTT is released. The Drake p/s does not have any sort of internal shut down mechanism, does it? [Drakelist] L-4B and L-7 power supply question
Hi, The B- of the power supply for the Drake L-4B and L-7 goes to pin 6 of the Cinch connector. Inside the amp, the B- is floated above ground by a one ohm resistor. The one ohm resistor that floats B- above ground is said to be for the purpose of plate current metering. I do not quite understand how this resistor is needed for plate current meter accuracy. Could someone please tell me how that works? I have an L-7 and a homebrew amp that uses a similar power supply. However, in the homebrew amp the B- goes directly to ground. I'm trying to understand the difference in the configurations. Thanks and 73, Bill NZ5N ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
Re: [Drakelist] L-4B and L-7 power supply question
Garey, Thanks for the reply. I still don't get why the resistor is needed. The ammeter is in series with the flow of the current, so what does the resistor do? What would happen if B- went directly to ground? I'm sure the answer is simple but for some reason it is evading me. 73, Bill Bill - It's just a relatively safer way (low voltage) to measure current of a high voltage supply. Any current that goes OUT of the supply on the positive end MUST come IN via the negative end, or vice-versa depending upon whether you learned your electronics in the military or civilian schools! Anyway, the resistor is near ground, (unless it opens!,) and so connecting it to a panel meter is much safer than having the meter connect across a shunt resistor somewhere up in the HV area of the supply. 73, Garey - K4OAH --- On Sat, 5/29/10, Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com wrote: From: Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com Subject: L-4B and L-7 power supply question To: drakelist@zerobeat.net Date: Saturday, May 29, 2010, 9:56 AM Hi, The B- of the power supply for the Drake L-4B and L-7 goes to pin 6 of the Cinch connector. [Drakelist] Using HV from L-4B and L-7 power supply on another amp
Thanks to Garey and to those who replied off-line to my question about the one ohm resistor. May I trouble you with another question? I have a homebrew 6m 3-500Z amp with similar circuitry to the L-7 and L-4B. Unfortunately, its power supply is not that beefy (2000v) and I don't get full output. So I came up with the idea of trying to connect my L-7 power supply to the other amp. To do this, I disconnected the homebrew amp's internal p/s HV connections (leaving in place the internal p/s's filament, relay, and blower connections) and attempted to connect the Drake p/s. I connected the Drake p/s's HV cable to the homebrew amp's B+ connection, and I connected the Drake p/s's B- connection (pin 6 of the Cinch connector) to ground on the homebrew amp. I also grounded the chassis' together. To turn the Drake p/s on, I jumpered pins 1 and 3 of the Cinch connector. After hooking all this up, I turned everything on and it did not work. There was no RF output at all from the homebrew amp. The plate current meter showed some plate current, but much less than usual. What am I doing wrong? All I can think of is that I'm forgetting to make some connection, or that I have the Drake p/s AC input wired wrong. Jumpering pins 1 and 3 seems to be the equivalent of turning the Power switch to On and turning the CW Tune/SSB switch to SSB, but perhaps I'm reading this wrong or forgetting something. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. 73, Bill NZ5N --- On Sat, 5/29/10, Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com wrote: From: Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com Subject: Re: L-4B and L-7 power supply question To: drakelist@zerobeat.net Cc: k4...@mindspring.com Date: Saturday, May 29, 2010, 11:26 AM Garey, Thanks for the reply. [Drakelist] Power supply connectors for L-7 and L-4B
Hello, I have a homebrew 6 meter RF deck using a 3-500Z tube. I was thinking I could power it with my L-7 power supply. The big 8 pin connector appears to be a standard Cinch connector. What about the High Voltage connector, what is that? Re: [Drakelist] Power supply connectors for L-7 and L-4B
Yes, Evan, Millen no. 37001-D, in case anyone else is thinking about building an RF deck using the Drake power supply. It's not cheap ($15 shipped) and some say it is unreliable and even dangerous, but I don't want to change the connector on such a classic amp. The Cinch connector was also expensive ($20 shipped) and quite tough to find. 73, Bill NZ5N --- On Mon, 5/24/10, k9...@aol.com k9...@aol.com wrote: From: k9...@aol.com k9...@aol.com Subject: Re: [Drakelist] Power supply connectors for L-7 and L-4B To: billdz@yahoo.com, drakelist@zerobeat.net Date: Monday, May 24, 2010, 8:30 AM Bill, That connector is a standard Millen connector. Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Now with video
Many thanks to all who watched the video and emailed me with ideas. I have watched it 50 times and I'm now convinced that the arc occurred in the plate cap stator that has the white graffiti-like traces, as described in a prior post. The flashes on the coil are just reflections. If you look carefully through the plastic bubble on back of the plate current meter, you can see the arc originating in the plate tuning capacitor. Suggested fixes have included: * replacing the mica caps mounted underneath the rear wafer of the bandswitch, * replacing the plate blocking capacitors, * polishing or totally removing the stator with the white traces, * Carl's suggestion below to try a piece of insulation between the coil and the cap. Have not yet tried any of these suggestions, but please keep the ideas coming. 73, Bill NZ5N --- On Tue, 5/18/10, Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com wrote: From: Bill Dzurilla billdz@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Rig was connected to a Heathkit Cantenna dummy load. As suggested by several, I set the Load control to 5 at the start, to prevent under-coupling. I made a video of the procedure and, as you can see at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJRyNQnkEWA There was arcing again. The arc occurs near the end of the video clip, at the 1:18 mark. You can see it on the first 2 turns of the coil that is on top of the Plate capacitor. Not sure if this is a reflection or if the coil itself was arcing. I did not see any arcing from the capacitor. Not sure how visible it is on YouTube, but I have watched this several times in slow motion. You can see a bit of the rotor of the Load capacitor on the left side of the screen, and also a bit of the output meter. At least in slo-mo, you can see output going up as I start to turn the Load cap to the left, then the tubes start to redden and the arc occurs. If the turning of the Load cap to the left resulted in under-coupling and caused the arc, I'm not sure how to proceed, because output was very low with the Load cap set at 5. Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Now with video
Thanks, John. I noticed the black dot as well and it drove me crazy trying to figure it out. After many attempts to duplicate, it turned out to be the rotor on the Load cap. It disappears a moment before the arc because I was turning that control to the left at the time of the arc. That is what led me to believe, as explained by W8JI and others, that the arcing was being caused by inadequate loading. When I tried again and left the Load control on 5, there was no arcing. I had not noticed the difference between the 2 tubes until you mentioned it. Possibly just a result of the camera angle. If not, what could it mean? 73, Bill NZ5N --- On Wed, 5/19/10, w4...@aol.com w4...@aol.com wrote: From: w4...@aol.com w4...@aol.com Subject: Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? Thanks for the reminder about the cooling, Evan. The source of the arc is difficult to see in the video, but if you look through the plastic bubble that forms the back side of the plate current meter, you can see the source of the arc, in the Plate tuning capacitor. 73, Bill --- On Wed, 5/19/10, k9...@aol.com k9...@aol.com wrote: From: k9...@aol.com k9...@aol.com Subject: Re: [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc - plate capacitor issue? [Drakelist] Drake L-7 arc and loose band switch knob
Hi, I recently acquired an L-7 amp and I tried it out today. I used my Pro II as the exciter and an amp keyer. I got 1250 watts out into a dummy load on 40, 20 and 15, and 1000 watts out on 10. My understanding from a Google search is that this is about right, as the power supply is not beefy enough to push it to the 1500w legal limit. However, I did see some claims of this amp obtaining full legal limit, is this real with the stock p/s? There seems to be some problem on 80, unfortunately. On all bands, I started with 20 watts drive and slowly increased the drive while tuning for max output. When I got up to about 600 watts out on 80, I heard and saw through the meter a blue arc. I have not yet tried 160 or any of the WARC bands. Only other issue observed is that the band switch knob is a little loose. I tightened it as best I could but it still shifts a bit.
