Re: [Drakelist] Ten-Tec and Drake Compared

2011-06-18 Thread Duane Calvin
Huh. Of six different pieces of TT equipment, only one ever needed repair.
That was due to an early life (warranty) fail of a bias transistor, and I
did the service with super help from TT guys. Two of the units were HF amps
and neither of them had any trouble (other than a 3-500Z grid that fell into
a cathode after years of service, much of it in RTTY mode.) Since the
majority of folks who post on forums tend to be those with a gripe, I
thought I'd post my experience which is the opposite. By contrast, I've
sent a VHF rig back to Yaesu three times without a resolution of a problem,
and finally gave up. Also had problems with an ICOM IC-765 that was my
first big rig. So, I find the negative criticism of TT to be misplaced,
in my experience

The difference here is that you could almost repair TT radio at home.
You could be back on the air in no time.
On the other hand, you may have to send other radio brands for service and
wait weeks.

Ron -

Perhaps. All I can say is that in 50 years of using Drake equipment, only
twice did I need to
purchase a unique part from Drake to repair a radio. Other minor repairs
were required over the
years, but all were accomplished with locally available resistors and/or
capacitors, with an
occasional diode or transistor thrown in.

I ran three R-4A/B setups for almost three years, 24/7 in autostart RTTY
service with only one
'failure', and open filament in a 12BY7. Yes, a few PA tubes had to be
replaced as the transmitters
were run at full power, with keydown periods of up to 30 minutes.

By contrast, it seemed like everyone I knew who had Ten-Tec equipment was
often praising their
'excellent service support'. :-)

cosmetically somewhat to the TR7...in that the front panel is made from
a single extruded piece of aluminum with a raised horizontal bar that
divides the top of the front panel where the freq display is,from the
bottom section where all the controls are located.
Not exactly the same, but very similar. Even used similar plastic end caps
Coincidence? or was it intentional? Certainly not copied from a

It seems Ten-Tec came along much later in the game than Drake or
Collins, but also has a high regard from their owners. With the head

In the 70's Ten-Tec had the Tritons, and early Omni's, with the Corsairs

So, how about a comparison of the Drake 4 and 7 lines with the above

The 2-B started at s/n 2001, the schematic is dated 4/20/61

12087 is the latest one I've ever heard of, and had to be very near the
end of production. WB4HFN's S/N database shows S/N 12060, date coded 11/62.

The other schematics are

S/N 3001 - 9/22/61

S/N 4500 - 12/4/61

S/N 6290 - 5/31/62

It'll be interesting to see if the transition narrows down to the
changes for Version 2 at S/N 3001

The baby of the 12 submissions is #12087; the elder statesman is

If anyone can accurately date their unit that would be helpful
information as far as establishing a production timeline.
Regarding the change in color: Plastic comes in many forms and
some formulations are more affected by UV/sunlight than others. I
would suspect that the button is one of the cheapest forms of plastic

is much more robust in both coloration and overall chemical

The Lacquer Stik is the almost official way to fill the knobs. i
think it's easiest because you just rub it in and wipe off the excess.

Some use White-out, but that's getting hard to find!

White Testor's model paint works, but requires a deft touch with a small
brush to keep it within the lines.

I haven't tried a China marker yet.

[Drakelist] Drake R-4A for sale - project radio

2010-02-14 Thread Duane Calvin
I am going to sell my R-4A which worked fine a few years ago when I
purchased it as a backup radio for my 4-Line. Now it is not producing
audio, but then it worked fine. AGC action seems to be working as the
S-meter (which moves downscale when the receiver warms up) follows the RF
gain control as you would expect it to do. I simply have no time to work on
repairing it, so I will let it go for a very reasonable price. Copper
chassis has only a small amount of tarnish. Email for pictures.

[Drakelist] National NC-190 - another project radio

2010-02-14 Thread Duane Calvin
I know, this is the Drake list, but let me try one more here. I'm cleaning
the shack, and this was to be my project radio. The NC-190 is one of
National's blue radios. It has a bandspread dial that is calibrated on
both sides - one for ham bands, one for SWL. With a flip of the knob, the
dial switches around to one or the other. This one is currently not
operating - no audio. When I first received it it could hear BC band
stations weakly. Since it was to be a project radio, I didn't worry about
that. Today I put a speaker on it and could not hear BC band stations at
all. So, something is no longer working correctly. Cosmetically it's
average. Front panel is in good condition, knobs need cleaning, and I've
never removed the cover to see what the internals look like. The top of the
chassis looks OK. Everything is here except a cardboard modesty panel on
the rear. I can send photos if interested. I've listed it on Ebay, but
will be happy to sell it to a Drake-ster for $70 plus shipping / packing /
insurance. This one will finish up the boatanchors that I need to remove
from the shack. Let me know if you're interested.

2009-04-08 Thread Duane Calvin
it governs our behavior, this is
why we think that attention deficit and hyperactivity are the symptoms of
prolonged absorption of high-frequency waves in that region, she said.

Nonsense, says Dr. V. Subrahaminayalakshminirayana, head of neurology at
Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. There is absolutely no conclusive
evidence in the literature to support an ambitious and imaginative theory
that ionizing radiation can deleteriously and negatively affect behavior in
children whether the exposure is at a relatively constant low-level or
periodic. He believes that attention deficit hyperactivity is more
 likely a
function of exhaustive over-stimulation of the brain by video
 games,
texting, and television viewing. Ask the Asian parents of your child's
playmate why they never seem to have this problem, he laughed.

In fact, the Stanford study found that Hispanic children were fourteen
 times
as likely to suffer the effects of radio waves than were Asian children.
Hydra Brock-Parker, dean of sociology at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a
consultant named in the Stanford study, says that Hispanics live in
depressed parts of a city where houses and apartments are packed closer
together and the possibility of exposure is much greater. Where are all of
those children going to go to escape radiation from transmitters?
 There's no
backyard to play in and besides, you wouldn't want your children playing
outside in those neighborhoods. If you've got, you know, a ham
 serial-killer
type next door flooding your apartment with high-intensity radio waves, you
have no choice but to sit
there and get sick, she said.

Representatives20from Marin, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties were present
at the press conference and were said to be keenly interested in the
implementation of the new law. A similar measure was introduced into the
L.A. County Board's docket on Monday and may be considered at the next
 session in May.

say other sellers may be gouging.
I just ran the numbers through the UPS site and given the dimensions
and weights of the two packages, the cost comes out to just over
$100
for UPS ground from California to New Hampshire.
BTW, the TR-3/RV-3/AC-3/WH-7 tipped the scales at just under 50
pounds
and was packaged (very poorly) in two boxes.
So all in all I think my little experiment was worth while for me,
and
a little enlightening.

Good point, John. My request was just in passing, but
out of curiosity I plugged in drake 4-line blue filter to
Google and got numerous references to blue lamps, many links to
WA9TGT's filters, WB4HFN's page linking to TGT's, but none that I could
find which linked to the Lee Filters number. I didn't try searching
the drakelist archive because I couldn't find the

That might have worked for you last night, but today if you
go into either the PayPal or the non-PayPal checkout, it stops at one
point (just before confirming in PayPal) and give the error message that
the minimum order amont of $15 has not been reached, and you cannot
progress from there. I got a similar message from the other
checkout option this morning when I tried it. I'll just order two
sheets and sell the 2nd one . . .

Hi Duane and all,

I plugged in an order with FT last night just to see how far it would
go. I got right up to the shipping but didn't give them my card number
and there was no mention of a minimum orderunless I somehow missed
it. Even then, I would gladly pay $15.00 for a sheet of filter if I
needed it. I am sure there are other goodies on that site that one
could order to make up the $15.00 minimum that would be usable items
around the shack. For that matter, one could order several sheets of
filter, keep one and sell the excess.

I happened to load up on the original stuff when it was still
available so I have my own lifetime supply.

I use Lee Lighting #172, which is an exact color match for the original
Drake film. It is only about half the thickness of the original, but the
color is identical.

Some have suggested the Roscolene #853 as being an exact match, but I
have never seen that one. I believe it is also the thinner material like
the Lee Lighting.

A 20 x 24 sheet was about $5 the last time I bought it. The trick is
finding a theatrical lighting supplier that will sell to an individual.
There was one in Atlanta, but the last time I tried to get a sheet, they
had gone out of business.

RE: [drakelist] An Introduction a question about keyer for T-4XB

2007-10-23 Thread Duane Calvin

Duane Calvin [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Frankly, for some things, like calling CQ if you don't do it with an
programmed keyer, iambic is much more efficient. Squeezing off an A for
example is easier for me than hitting thumb then index, even though they
seem like very similar motions. C's and Q's are much easier. I don't use
iambic very often, but I practiced the CQ sequence because I do it manually
when mobile, and it makes calling much easier. Most of the rest of the
time, because I learned on a bug, I tend to slap the paddle more as if it
were a single lever. I've found dual paddle keys to be better built, more
available, and easier to use than the few single paddle ones that are
available, and they work as well with either mode. So, figure out what
works for you, and develop your own opinion. You know what they say about
opinions!

Jeff -

The Drake transmitters are all NEGATIVE voltage to ground, while most
modern transceivers are POSITIVE to ground.

Most keyers will key either, but may require changing an internal jumper
or switch, UNLESS they use hard relay contacts for keying.

The Drake key line is approximately -60 VDC, and only requires a few mA
to key. So any relay would be fine, and just about all keyers with
transistor keying will handle it as long as the polarity is correct.

Personally I use the CMOS-4 from Idiom because it's one of the few that
I can turn off that stupid iambic junk that will drive any bug user
crazy! :-)

Another vote for the needle applicator. Spray goes everywhere, and if you
use it on a phenolic switch, who knows what will happen to the phenolic as
it is absorbed. I put a very small drop next to the wiper contact and then
turn the switch back and forth through its range to wipe that drop over all
the contacts. Repeat on the wiper contact for each section of the switch.

Duane Calvin [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Short answer: That S9+ signal that is 10 KHz away from you can't be heard
by the radio except when he is transmitting, the noise floor level raises
up. This is easily heard when that signal is CW and you can hear the noise
increase enough to copy the CW via that noise. It can also be heard on a
rig with significant phase noise on transmit. My neighbor (500' away) used
to have a Kenwood TS-430 that had serious phase noise problems on transmit.
If he was within ~100 KHz of me, I could hear my noise floor follow his
signal. I was surprised to find him, one evening, and I didn't hear him
until I was practically on top of him. I asked him a week or so later when
I next saw him if he got a new rig - yep, got a new TS-570. It was
significantly better on transmitted phase noise, and I was happy. (My Orion
doesn't have any distinguishable phase noise issues.)

I guess that wasn't as short an answer as I had intended. FWIW.

Question on the subject of hear/not hear.

Although I know the book definition of phase noise. Can anyone describe
to me what it sounds like? I actually have a couple early fully
synthesized rigs here to sell for a friend (one I guess actually noted for
its phase noise). I would like to set them up and listen to hear what I
am missing with the TR7 (yes the TR7 has some too, as do all synthesized
signals).

Is it simply background noise, or noise modulation/intermod of the
TX/RX signals, or both or ???

Thanks.

[drakelist] For Sale: Original Drake 4-Line w/orig boxes, manuals

2006-11-27 Thread Duane Calvin
I have an original Drake 4-Line for sale. It is in good operating condition
overall with one exception. The R-4 is getting weak on the higher bands,
but the lower bands are good. Both are cosmetically good condition - the
front panels are very clean but the R-4 has some spotting along the right
edge, and the T-4's frequency dial has darkened considerably centering on
the 250 KHz mark (dark amber from 175 - 325 and lighter amber for 25 KHz
each side of that.) The T-4 operates fine and puts out good power (100w+).
I can forward photos to interested parties. Set includes R-4, T-4, MS-4 and
AC-3. All have the original boxes, and these would be double packed (inside
overpack boxes) for shipment to you. I've used this station occasionally,
like for SKN's and enjoyed it very much.

$325 + I'll split shipping/packing with you.

[drakelist] FS: Drake R-4, T-4X, MS-4, AC-3 + original boxes, manuals

2006-04-23 Thread Duane Calvin

Ive decided to sell my original
Drake 4-Line. It comes complete with the original boxes for all pieces,
and the original manuals for the R-4 and T-4X. Even the sales receipt for
the R-4 is there! Id prefer this to go someone who appreciates the
original nature of these, but if I get no responses here, it will go via the
big auction house we all have heard of hi!

FOR SALE: Drake 4-Line, the
original 1964-65 version. This station consists of:

Drake R-4 S/N 0667 Good Condx,
tuning Good sensitivity on 80m 40m, 20m, but falls of on 15m and 10m.
Probably needs new RF amp tube. Sounds good. Front panel and case
are good, with a few small scratches. Chassis is darkened with a few
small rust spots.

Drake T-4X S/N 10127 Good
Condx, including final tubes. Tuning dial has discolored apparently due
to sunlight exposure from .175 - .325. Still very readable.
Operates well on lower bands, but due to R-4s lack of sensitivity, I
have not tried it on the higher bands. Front panel and case are in good
shape, chassis is darkened a bit, but no obvious rust spots.

Drake AC-3 Power Supply (working well)

Drake MS-4 Speaker Works well.

These each have their original shipping
boxes and the R-4 and T-4X have the original instruction manuals as well.
(The sales receipt is still in the R-4 manual). Interconnect cables are
also included.

Photos are available on request.

Price: $350 plus shipping, will drive
reasonable distance to meet you in Texas for delivery. Or, I am driving
to the Dayton Hamvention and would be OK with delivering to you there.

Reason for sale I have a 4A line and
a 4-B line, so I need to do some thinning of the herd!

so its time to let go of my favorite Drake station.

Not to belabor this too much (too late, I know!) but in the USAF we sent
newbies over to the AP shop (airframe powerplant) for a bucket of
propwash. Sometimes a joker there would say they were out, and send him
over to the washracks to bring them back some so he could bring us some.
Then there were others sent for a few yards of flightline. Initiation
rites are peculiar, aren't they?!

Reminds me of things new soldiers were asked to retrieve:

Or new boy scouts

You need to bring back:

Polka Dot Paint
Tent Stretchers

I worked in the maintenance department and we got numerous requests for the

above...so we developed a nonesense language which added insult to injury
and
confusion to the mix.

BTW, the game could more interesting if you specified the size of the
stretcher
or the colors of the paint.

We sometimes told folks we were fresh out of the correct size/colorand
asked
them to complete a requistion.
