Jim,

I wish Dayton was closer to your QTH. Then I would tempt you with some pics
and test report on an L-7 and MN-2700, hi hi. I have the packing down and have
never had an L4B or L7 damaged in shipment. But yes, shipping costs have gone
up. It is only a matter of time and you'll find exactly what you need within
driving distance.

Have a great weekend.

Hey, Doug -

I ordered one from International Crystal in Oklahoma. They'll take your order
over the phone and will take plastic but you can't order on the web. The good
part about that is that you tell the person on the phone you need a Drake
crystal and they know exactly what you need.

They'll give you a delivery estimate that has to be absolute worst-case
scenario, as I had my rock in about 4 days (I think they tell you two weeks).
It was dead-on.

Costs about 20 bucks with the shipping. Worth it over trolling eBay and
possibly getting someone else's headache.

Interesting in the different perspectives. I always found my R-4C to

At least

on the noise here, it worked very well with a GUF-1 installed.

Dynamic range is another issue, but the NB was outstanding.

Hummm, the Noise Blanker on my R4C (unmodified) seems to work better at
eliminating the noise I have around my house better than my Icom IC-775DSP
which is a great radio with IF-DSP so I would say my unmodified R4C works very

SAY WHAT? I could not disagree with you more.

A unmodified R-4C has a Narrow Spaced Dynamic Range of 58dB while the
Sherwood modified R-4C has a dynamic range of 84dB. So in affect what you
have just said is that having a noise blanker that works is more important
than having your receiver blown away by adjacent QRM. I'll take the roofing

Don -

You answered your own question/statement. I believe the words 'heavily
modified' were tossed around! :-)

The Sherwood mods essentially render the 4NB useless, as you have
discovered. The CW roofing filter is particularly bad, as it narrows the
noise bandwidth seen by the NB, and delays pulses through it so they no
longer match up with the blanking pulses.

The NB is very effective as some have stated, when used with the original
receiver topology. Like so much in the world of RF and electronics in
general, a receiver is a 'system'. The original design was optimized (within
cost constraints) as a whole. Anything that alters that design takes the
risk that it 'may' alter that basic, optimized design, 'possibly' improving
one characteristic. Unfortunately the characteristic it improves almost
always causes another characteristic to decline, perhaps obviously,
otherwise not so much.

The basic Drake NB is the same design from the R-4A through the R-7, and
most find them VERY effective on high level, short duty cycle impulse noise.
As soon as the noise pulses are 'stretched', either by source
characteristics or group delay through filters, the effectiveness drops off
quickly.

Those 'soft' filters are what makes the R-4B audio 'sweet'! :-)
Very

little group delay, if any, and no distortion caused by sharp skirts of
crystal filters with 1.8:1 shape factors. But it you want to hear a
station for 'communication' purposes, hard to beat a crystal or
mechanical filter system.

The soft skirts don't give you a single signal like a code oscillator
or
FM radio station, so you have to develop a brain function that let's
you
separate one signal or voice from another and concentrate until you
only
'hear' one. Kinda like carrying on a conversation in a crowded
cocktail

party! :-) Before the advent of those sharp filters, you HAD to
develop that skill or you were out of luck. I developed it many years
ago out of necessity, because my first receiver had an IF that was
about

30 kHz wide. I could hear almost the entire Novice CW band without
touching the dial I actually feel a little claustrophobic
with

narrow, steep skirted filters, I like to hear what's going on around
'my' frequency, just at a reduced level.

A couple of 'Y' patch cables and a few diodes would allow using either
receiver, as long as you don't care about transceive operation. The
PreMixer signal is too sensitive to capacitive loading to allow it to
split.

IMHO the ideal setup is to have the Sherwood C line for serious

Would be nice to actually have a nice way to switch the T-4XC to either

I doubt there is an 'easy' way to do it. There is an optional NB for
the 2-C, the 2-NB that could probably be replicated and tucked away in
the 2-B. It's a fairly effective NB in the 2-C, and uses standard parts
with the exception of a transformer that shouldn't be too hard to duplicate.

To All,

The R-4C noise blanker is effective depending on the type of noise. In my
case it handles the 20 over S9 raucous, pulsing hash generated by defective

is far less useful on other types of noise.

Would I sell my 4NB noise blanker? NO. As you might recall I have one
of those Sherwood / Drake R-4C’s (late production SN), the service
receipt for it from Sherwood totals more than $900.
Bottom line, be prepared to be disappointed if you pay high dollar for
a 4NB noise blanker and it does little or nothing. Experiencing what I
have with my R-4C and 4NB, I would never throw away money on buying one
for my TR-4C.

Be careful what you wish for.

Hi All,

I went to a vintage radio even over the weekend and was able to sell
some heavy metal and come back with much lighter cash.    Now, I
would like to find the noise blanker for my R4C.  Does anyone on the
list have one and what would you need for it?

Thanks much and very 73.

OK - I am going to stir the pot some.
I have one of those 4NB noise blanker's installed in my R-4C. To be honest

1)5K ohm 5 Watt pot. Power control in the final
screen grid circuit.(this one is frozen stiff)

2)Clip on socket for the #47 lamp used to
illuminate the meter. (for some reason removed
 this unit)

3)1 small knob or just the chrome insert. One
insert missing from one of the knobs.

4)Crystals. I'd rather use crystals than a VFO of
some type to make this a historically accurate
 novice station.

I

Re: [drakelist] Wanted: R-4C Function Switch

2003-10-19 Thread kenneth.winterling

Garey,

Thanks for the advice but I know about Lubriplate on the detent. I wish the
previous owner(s) had used it. Unfortunately, when I purchased this
receiver a few years ago it was already broken. Except for that minor
defect the receiver is in nearly perfect condition. The only other thing it
needs is a 6 KHz AM filter to complete it.

The next time I have it open I'll take your advice and check the switch to
see if it is assembled with screws. I just may have a good "front end" in
the junque box, hopefully with a ball bearing detent.

Ken -

You may want to consider swapping the switch wafers
onto a new "front end" from a standard switch. Many
are assemble with screws making it an easy swap. I
have repaired a couple this way. I don't recall the
size of the Function wafers, but they are a standard
size. Centralab offered a line of switches in "kit
form" for a while that allowed you to assemble switches
from various wafers and detent mechanisms. I still see
these at hamfests now and then.

For those switches that haven't broken yet, a little
Lubriplate in the detent mechanism will prevent this.
If your switch is hard to turn or snaps loudly, lube it!
