What can the FSF do to help?

2006-09-11 Thread John Sullivan

The Free Software Foundation had listed http://r300.sf.net/ as a High Priority
Project. We recognize that the lack of 3D video drivers for their specific
hardware is one of the primary obstacles preventing people from running
entirely free systems.

The development status and location of that project has changed, and we would
like to update our recommendation.

We are interested in ideas for how we can help contribute to the project's
development (and to the overall goals of performing 3D video drivers for free
software operating systems).

I'd like to hear any suggestions or feedback that the developers on the list
have for what could be done.

(I'll stay subscribed to the list -- or please point me in a different
direction if there is a more appropriate list for this.)

Thanks,

Honestly, it'd be nice if the R300 project focus would change to getting the
driver to work on hardware that it doesn't already work on that is R300
family hardware (including hacking Xorg's 2D driver) instead of prioritizing
unsupported features.

As such, I'd love to use the R300 driver (and maybe even help development, if
not just testing), but as it stands, on my run of the mill RV350 AP revision
hardware (a Radeon 9600), initialization of X hangs if I enable DRI, but
continues fine if DRI is off (ie, its not the 2D driver's own code hanging
X).

This I'd think is a severe bug, as RV350 hardware of all revisions is quite
common (and, in fact, many revisions of RV350 hardware do work fine), but
adding features over fixing bugs like this is, well, stupid, especially if I,
and others like me in my position, cannot use them.

R300 driver development now takes place within the Mesa tree
(http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net/). The driver is mostly working now.
There are still bugs and hardware features that are not supported.
Fixing driver bugs that are caused by bad interactions with the hardware
tends to be a tedious game of guess and check. This can be particularly
annoying when one version of the R300 chips works, but a very similar
version has problems for some users.

We are interested in ideas for how we can help contribute to the project's
development (and to the overall goals of performing 3D video drivers for free

I'd like to hear any suggestions or feedback that the developers on the list

The biggest problem with all hardware supported by open drivers is the
lack of documentation. The hardware documentation that is available is
often only available to a few developers under NDA (e.g., R100 and R200
documentation). Anything that the FSF could do to convince hardware
vendors to at least make hardware documentation more available would be
a tremendous help.

(I'll stay subscribed to the list -- or please point me in a different

Either this list or mesa3d-dev at lists dot sourceforge dot net are
basically equivalent.

It still continued not to work.

I think I did file a bug, but the xorg.log was virtually empty. There are no
errors recorded, and I have to kill -9 X over ssh to get anywhere. X
literally just froze in place and stopped.

I also did raise it on this list, but it went nowhere.

Meanwhile i think fsf can help only by trying to work with hardware vendor.

I really hope AMD just releases the damn specifications.

I also think we lack people to work on that, or at least people working on
 that
lack time, i would like to contribute more but my time is already almost
 fullfill
 by my work.

It isn't quite the lacking people problem, its the fact that a) driver hacking
isn't easy for the average hacker, b) everyone is just saying fuck ATI and
switching to nvidia.

I may even switch to nvidia if this keeps up. fglrx sucks, ATI has no interest
in helping DRI, and DRI just doesn't have the man power to do stuff quickly.

Maybe the FSF should start funding driver development by hiring programmers
and buying hardware?

Hell, I'll even trade any of you R300 developers my card for a DRI-functioning
Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb /w VGA+DVI (or better), as long as the driver is fixed
to work with the card I'm trading you.

 best,

The FSF may be in a better position to lobby ATI / AMD to release more
documentation, particularly for the cards which are completely
unsupported, such as the Xpress cards. I'm quite satisfied with the
progress being made on my particular card ( r300-based, Mobility X700 -
it works great ). However without the ability to support later Radeon
cards, a decent portion of future ( and some current ) users will be
forced to use ATI's binary drivers. I'd therefore concentrate on these
completely unsupported cards ( I believe initialisation of the memory
controller is basically the only problem ). I've read on the unofficial
ATI Linux forums that some guy who has access to more info under NDA has
made patches to add support for these cards, but is being prevented from
releasing them by ATI.

Just a thought. I'm only a DRI user ...

It is common knowledge that r300 is slow, but UT 2004 is playable provided you
set UseVBO=True. This should give a 3x speedup.

I've changed that, it seems to make a big difference if s3tc is enabled, but
still not playable. I have a somewhat serious interest in working on r300
though, and I've been trying to reproduce the texture corruption issue with my
own simple opengl commands. So far, I have a spinning cube with a texture on
the sides, and I have r300 warning my about the multitexturing problems, but the
texture still looks fine. I'm going to find out about how to use multitexturing
and add to my code till I hopefully reproduce the problem. Anyone have any
advice for me?
