[Dspace-tech] Using DSpace for hosting Past Exams Online

2013-08-20 Thread amutsikiwa
Hi All,

I have an in-house Past Exams Online running on Linux, Apache, Mysql and
PHP (LAMP). In the in-house system I have tables contain the relationships
between Faculty, Departments, Course Codes and Course titles. During data
ingestion (uploading a past exam script), the use simply selects the course
code and the other pieces of information such as the course title,
department and the faculty are selected in the background without the user
input. Now I want to implement the project on DSpace. My question is it
possible have the value of a given metadata field, e.g Department been a
function of another value, which could be in another separate table, say.

Regards,

[Dspace-tech] Error while attempting to create identifier for Item id: 7330

2013-08-20 Thread Otuoma
I have the error below when I try to submit a new item to the repository
during the last step just after granting the license.
I have tried granting the dspace user all privileges on the repository
database and I also tried running all the database upgrade scripts as the
dspace user but this did not solve the problem. I also ran the update schema
as well though as the postgres user. Am not sure if i have missed something,
any help will be appreciated. This work is an upgrade from dspace 1.7 to
3.2.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Parameters for vocabulary xmlui not working

2013-08-20 Thread bcoballes
Hi Elvi,

I successfully modified the controlled vocabulary splitter, thanks to your
insights I could not do the work around without it. Here are my thoughts
regarding the issue:

1. I completely agree with you that the 'subject code autocomplete' from
dspace.cfg is different from the controlled vocabularies populated by
Subject Categories link (as per your experience).
2. Upon inspecting the codes of Kevin, the developer of this feature, I
noticed a single instance that the delimiter :: appeared. It is on
[dspace-src]/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/vocabulary/ControlledVocabulary.java.
I simply edited the file. But since I am now developing my template in
[dspace-src]/dspace/modules/xmlui/src/, no matter how many times I rebuild
DSpace, the effect won't be applied. So I tried copying
ControlledVocabulary.java file to
[dspace-src]/dspace/modules/src/main/java/org/dspace/vocabulary/. Rebuild
my DSpace and restart Tomcat and it worked like a charm.
3. BTW, I can't have the autocomplete feature work but since my original
objective is to modify the splitter from the vocabulary entries generated
by the Subject Categories' link, I'm fine with it.

Thanks again. I am almost done hard testing our DSpace. Just fine tuning
some stuff and fixing minor bugs.

Best regards,
Brian

 Hello Brian,

 I have now recreated your problem, and I noticed a few things. If you are
 using the Subject Categories link to populate your subject keywords
 field, the :: splitter is being used. But try to use suggest in
 the choices.presentation.dc.subject of your dspace.cfg, this will sort of
 autocomplete the entries as you type in the subject keywords field, and
 you'll notice that it is using whatever values you have set as the
 splitter, in my case I used . Please see attached file. As you can see
 in the attached file, the first entry I have in the subjects area is using
as the splitter whereas the second entry was using the default ::
 as the splitter. If you really want to use your custom splitter, then I
 suggest that you have to refrain from using the Subject Categories link
 to populate your subject keywords field. Perhaps Kevin of atmire (the
 developer of this feature) can help us why our custom splitter were not
 being used when using the Subject Categories link.

 Elvi

 same codes in the dspace.cfg or am I missing something? Thanks again Elvi.

Your dspace.log should contain a line like this:

Caught exception in submission step:

Find it and send the whole line. That should help us find the problem.

Yes, it should be in the dspace.log.* files. Here's the source file
relevant to the error line:

 Caused by: javax.servlet.ServletException: java.lang.RuntimeException: Error
 while attempting to create identifier for Item id: 7330
at org.dspace.submit.step.CompleteStep.doProcessing(CompleteStep.java:103)

https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-3.2/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/submit/step/CompleteStep.java#L103

Try also searching for Error while attempting to create handle which
comes from here:
 Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Error while attempting to create
 identifier for Item id: 7330
at
 org.dspace.identifier.VersionedHandleIdentifierProvider.register(VersionedHandleIdentifierProvider.java:117)

https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-3.2/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/identifier/VersionedHandleIdentifierProvider.java#L117

Try running:
tail -f [dspace]/log/dspace.log.2013-08-20

and watching the output as you perform the submission again.

One more log file you can check is the tomcat catalina.*.log file, but
I'm fairly sure this should be in dspace.log.

 By the way I have also set the owner of everything in the [dspace] folder
 including subfolders and files to tomcat6 user because initially it was
 throwing errors at the file upload stage. Am not sure if this is correct as
 well?

 That's correct. It must be the same user as the user who runs tomcat,
otherwise you'll run into permission issues.

[Dspace-tech] Anonymous members not able to upload documents

2013-08-20 Thread Stephano John
Hi all,

We have almost finished setting up dspace 3.0.1 to be used as an
institutional repository, unfortunately all e-person who are left as
anonymous members are not able to upload any documents in the repository.
I thought its like in dspace 1.8 all those in that group by default are
able to upload documents. But the same e-person if you add them in
administrators group, they are able to upload the docs.

Anything to be done in authorization??

All the best

Re: [Dspace-tech] How to import metadata in bulk for dspace

2013-08-20 Thread helix84
CSV is just a generic format, like a TXT file, the data in it can be
encoded in many ways. Therefore to save effort, I suggest you go ahead
with RIS. This is the command to import a RIS file:

[dspace]/bin/dspace import -b -m mapFile -e exam...@email.com -c
123456789/1 -s /export/export-ris -i ris

* [dspace] is the directory where your DSpace is installed
* mapFile is a file created by the import process containing newly
created handles that can be used to revert a failed import
* exam...@email.com is the email of the dspace administrator (this
user must exist in DSpace), the first administrator created during
DSpace installation logs in using PasswordAuthentication
* 123456789/1 is the handle of the collection where you want to create
the new items
* /export/export-ris is the .ris file with records you want to import

1) When I started the server at 2013-08-20T08:00:00Z am and I checked
the rss feed at 2013-08-20T08:01:00Z, cFeed.timeStamp = 2013-08-20T08:01:00Z
If nobody click on the RSS link before 11am,
the line
   if (cFeed.timeStamp + (cacheAge * HOUR_MSECS)
System.currentTimeMillis())
is equivalent to
   if (2013-08-20T08:01:00Z + 2 hours  2013-08-20T11:00:00Z)
which is always true and the FeedServlet sends the feed that was cached
at 2013-08-20T08:01:00Z

I think the code should be :

if (cFeed.timeStamp + (cacheAge * HOUR_MSECS)
System.currentTimeMillis()) {...}

2) If we assume that the first if (see above) gives false, the servlet
calls the function itemsChanged()
 in function itemsChanged, we call
 Harvest.harvest(context, dso, startDate, endDate,
 0, 1, !includeAll, false, false,
includeAll).size()  0)
   where startDate and endDate are truncated date ( startDate =
dcStartDate.toString().substring(0, 10))
   in this case, in my example, we call
  Harvest.harvest(context, dso, 2013-08-20T00:00:00Z,
2013-08-20T00:00:00Z,
 0, 1, !includeAll, false, false,
includeAll).size()  0)
   If new items are archived in the repository (e.g: archived at
2013-08-20T10:30:00Z) we don't see this items in the rss feed because
itemsChanged(context, dso, cFeed.timeStamp) return false and the
FeedServlet sends the feed that was cached at 2013-08-20T08:01:00Z

I think the code of the function itemsChanged should be :

 private boolean itemsChanged(Context context, DSpaceObject dso,
long timeStamp)
 throws SQLException
 {
 // construct start and end dates
 DCDate dcStartDate = new DCDate( new Date(timeStamp) );
 DCDate dcEndDate = new DCDate( new
Date(System.currentTimeMillis()) );

//// convert dates to ISO 8601, stripping the time
//String startDate = dcStartDate.toString().substring(0, 10);
//String endDate = dcEndDate.toString().substring(0, 10);

 // this invocation should return a non-empty list if even 1
item has changed
 try {
 return (Harvest.harvest(context, dso,
dcStartDate.toString(), dcEndDate.toString(),
 0, 1, !includeAll, false, false,
includeAll).size()  0);
 }
 catch (ParseException pe)
 {
 // This should never get thrown as we have generated the
dates ourselves
 return false;
 }
 }

Hi Stephano,

it's normal behaviour that anonymous users cannot upload into the repository.

You probably had your DSpace 1.8 repository set up in a different way
and those users were not anonymous. How did you do the migration to
DSpace 3? Did you reuse the database? If you did, the the users,
groups and permissions should remain the same. If you did a fresh

It's not necessary to give them administrator rights. You can simply
give them the right to submit to a particular collection. In XMLUI,
log in as administrator, go to that collection, click on Edit
Collection, then on the Assign Roles tab and create a group of
submitters, this will be called e.g. COLLECTION_1_SUBMIT. Now next to

all collections where you want to allow anonymous submissions.

Re: [Dspace-tech] migrate from Windows to Linux

2013-08-20 Thread Bram Luyten
Dear Eileen,

it's quite challenging to give a comprehensive answer because of the many
different aspects involved. I will try to start with a few pointers, feel
free to follow up with more specific questions.

*General information about DSpace upgrades*

The general documentation for upgrading a DSpace installation can be found
here:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Upgrading+a+DSpace+Installation

An upgrade from 1.5.2 to the most recent version, 3.2 will entail that you
need to run the database update scripts for each intermediate version.

*Migrating from a Windows based installation to Linux*

A major area of work associated with your migration will be the
installation and configuration of the dependencies DSpace needs in order to
be installed and operated.

The installation documentation at
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Installation gives a good
overview of the installation of these dependencies.

One other area that I can think of, which is definitely different in Linux
compared to Windows, is how scheduled tasks are configured. Information
about these cron jobs is also covered in the installation documentation:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Installation#Installation-'cron'Jobs

I realize this was rather vague and general, but I still hope this helps to
put you in the right direction! In case you are considering outsourcing the
actual upgrade work, @mire could provide you with such services.

with kindest regards,

Re: [Dspace-tech] migrate from Windows to Linux

2013-08-20 Thread Hilton Gibson
Hi Eileen

I was waiting for Bram to reply.
I have more details about using Linux for DSpace here:
http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Dspace
As far as upgrading AND changing platforms, the answer would be that you
export all the contents from the old version and simply import them to the
new platform.
However the facility to export a whole archive does not exist with DSpace
1.5.2 as far as I know.
Somebody on the list may be able to help you or @mire.

But you can go ahead with the guide to build the new platform, ready to
receive content.
As far as automated tasks go, see:
http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Daily_Admin for more details.

[Dspace-tech] Question about search highlighting in DSpace 3.2

Hi...

I am using DSpace 3.2 (XMLUI with modified Mirage interface). We are testing
it in preparation to migrate to production (Our production is currently DSpace
1.8.2 JSPUI).

I have been testing the search snippets, so that I can explain this new
feature to our users, but I do not seem to be getting the search highlighting
(ie., search term highlighted in the snippet).
I assume that I am doing something wrong. Can someone direct me where I should

Hi George,

there is no need to configure anything, although you can customize it
once you get it working. The two things that may be preventing you
from seeing highlighting are:
1) Did you reindex when upgrading? Run update-discovery-index -f to make sure.
2) Did you customize your theme? If you did, some updates are
necessary, check the updates Mirage received. To verify that this is
not the problem, test with Mirage.

precede the newline, there can't be other whitespace) or some other gotcha.
Try typing it on a single line:

plugin.sequence.org.dspace.authenticate.AuthenticationMethod
= org.dspace.authenticate.IPAuthentication,
org.dspace.authenticate.PasswordAuthentication

Also make sure you're looking at
[dspace]/config/modules/authentication.cfg, not
[dspace-source]/config/modules/authentication.cfg.

Hi George,

there is no need to configure anything, although you can customize it once you
get it working. The two things that may be preventing you from seeing
highlighting are:
1) Did you reindex when upgrading? Run update-discovery-index -f to make sure.
2) Did you customize your theme? If you did, some updates are necessary, check
the updates Mirage received. To verify that this is not the problem, test with
Mirage.

Re: [Dspace-tech] How to import metadata in bulk for dspace

2013-08-20 Thread c_sugumaran
I have done batch import of excel meta data to dspace in version 3.1
(windows xp / windows 2003 server). as it is having a GUI for it in both
jsput and xmlui. If you are using the same OS, I can help you by mailing to
me csuguma...@gmail.com .

Your metadata excel file should be mapped with dubline core metadata field
in title line as a model attached with it. 123456789-47.csv

http://dspace.2283337.n4.nabble.com/file/n4666717/dspace-config-modules-bulkedit-cfg.pdf

Also you may have to edit bulkedit.cfg file which is availble in
rootdirectory - config - modules.

If you need any help you please send me your excel file with 3 or 4 lines of
data with title mapped with dublin core meta data field. I will give
correct procedure for it. Well

Re: [Dspace-tech] migrate from Windows to Linux

2013-08-20 Thread Eileen Brouddus

Hilton and Bram,

Thank you for the information. If I understand correctly, I can build
the new Linux server and install 3.2 version with dependencies. Then, I
need to install all upgrades on the old version and then export the data
(HOW?) and move it to the old version.

Hi Eileen

I was waiting for Bram to reply.
I have more details about using Linux for DSpace here:
http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Dspace
As far as upgrading AND changing platforms, the answer would be that
you export all the contents from the old version and simply import
them to the new platform.
However the facility to export a whole archive does not exist with
DSpace 1.5.2 as far as I know.

Somebody on the list may be able to help you or @mire.

But you can go ahead with the guide to build the new platform, ready
to receive content.
As far as automated tasks go, see:
http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Daily_Admin for more
details.

Dear Eileen,

it's quite challenging to give a comprehensive answer because of
the many different aspects involved. I will try to start with a
few pointers, feel free to follow up with more specific questions.

*General information about DSpace upgrades*

The general documentation for upgrading a DSpace installation can
be found here:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Upgrading+a+DSpace+Installation

An upgrade from 1.5.2 to the most recent version, 3.2 will entail
that you need to run the database update scripts for each
intermediate version.

*Migrating from a Windows based installation to Linux*

A major area of work associated with your migration will be the
installation and configuration of the dependencies DSpace needs in
order to be installed and operated.

The installation documentation at
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Installation gives a
good overview of the installation of these dependencies.

One other area that I can think of, which is definitely different
in Linux compared to Windows, is how scheduled tasks are
configured. Information about these cron jobs is also covered in
the installation documentation:

https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Installation#Installation-'cron'Jobs

https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Installation#Installation-%27cron%27Jobs

I realize this was rather vague and general, but I still hope this
helps to put you in the right direction! In case you are
considering outsourcing the actual upgrade work, @mire could
provide you with such services.

with kindest regards,

Bram Luyten
