[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Ham Radio D-Star Demos-PLEASE READ!
I was recently asked about doing a demo of ham radio for a local school science club. Steve-NU5D, Steve-KE5KLV, Mike-WB5PBS, Paul-N5NIR and myself went and demo'd to a class of 50 to 60 10 year olds. The reaction was more that I could have ever hoped for. I am getting stopped almost daily and being asked for information on getting a license, not only from students, but teachers also. Here is where I need your help. We are now being asked to set up more demo's in more schools. As we get these set, I will post here with the same heading as above and a date and time. Any ham in ANY country with 3rd party agreements are asked to monitor and check in with us. We have several of the kids ask questions and they love it. I feel dstar has opened a new avenue for us to attract the next generation of hams. Please stay tuned, more to come. 73 Hal Pagel - N5JLL Temple, Texas
Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Invitations to other ham groups.
I have also recieved those invitations but I accepted and joined the group. While most of the conversation is above my head in the technical sense, I still find it interesting anyway. I keep hoping there will someday be some D-Star activity here in Palm Beach County, Florida but for now, I'll keep my Icom IC-2820 ready and waiting (meanwhile, it's a fine analog unit. I would expect that you should be able to hit the Ft L:auderdale repeater in some location. [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Programming For Simplex?
Our area is scheduled for a D-Star repeater when funding is available, so a few of us are planning to get the radios and operate Simplex until the magic day arrives. My question is - Do I need to use MYCALL and URCALL when operating Simplex? I suspect that I do, but wanted to check with someone who has used Simplex. Hank KI4UMX

Hank KI4UMX Hank, Technically no, but you probably want to use them anyway. When you have MYCALL set to KI4UMX you ID every tinme you key up. If you set URCALL to CQCQCQ that is generally the CQ message. BTW, if you have MYCALL set it will show on the other station's display when you key up. There may also be a few folks who will want to try Callsign Squelch, in which case you will want to put their callsign in the URCALL slot. -- John, K7VE

If I understand your explanation, using URCALL of CQCQCQ will reach anyone on frequency UNLESS they are using Callsign Squelch? Only one of us has a D-Star radio so far (can you say Santa?) Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: Programming For Simplex?
Hank, That is correct. Actually, it doesn't matter what is in the URCALL field if the receiver is not set to either callsign or group squelch, but CQCQCQ is the convention (and will be useful when you get a repeater/gateway). Welcome to D-STAR and may Santa be generous.
