My connotation of bit image is a bit-by-bit copy of
every sector on a disk whether or not it has any valid
information on it as far as the file system would be concerned.

By default Acronis True Image recognizes the disk partition's
format and makes copies of information in that partition ...
probably based on a table of allocated sectors.

There is a box you can tick when making your backup selection
to do that full disk copy - I've only used that on one
occasion where the disk was corrupted and I was working
on data extraction.

 3. Do you boot from the Acronis CD to run the program?

Yes.
Buy the product - which you can do easily on-line and download.
Install on a system (even if temporarily).
Create the recovery (boot) optical media.
Optionally remove it from a system if you don't want it there.
Use the optical media for your backup and restore needs.

 4. If #3 is not the case, does Acronis make a version
that will run under CentOS 5.1?

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
http://eqca.download.acronis.com/pdf/TrueImage2009_datasheet.en.pdf

No - according to the aforementioned PDF.

Supported file systems:
- FAT16/32, NTFS, Linux Ext2/Ext3, ReiserFS, Linux Swap
- Raw Images support for other partitions and corrupted file systems
(the latter is maybe what you mean by bit image?)

Here are some of the approaches I use with True Image Home
where I typically dump my images to:
- a dedicated backup disk running in the system
- a IEEE1394 800b disk and interface
- over the network to a server (SMB/FTP/etc.)

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Ham Radio D-Star Demos-PLEASE READ!

2008-11-08 Thread Hal Ray Pagel
I was recently asked about doing a demo of ham radio for a local school
science club. Steve-NU5D, Steve-KE5KLV, Mike-WB5PBS, Paul-N5NIR and
myself went and demo'd to a class of 50 to 60 10 year olds. The
reaction was more that I could have ever hoped for. I am getting
stopped almost daily and being asked for information on getting a
license, not only from students, but teachers also.

Here is where I need your help. We are now being asked to set up more
demo's in more schools. As we get these set, I will post here with the
same heading as above and a date and time. Any ham in ANY country with
3rd party agreements are asked to monitor and check in with us. We have
several of the kids ask questions and they love it. I feel dstar has
opened a new avenue for us to attract the next generation of hams.

Please stay tuned, more to come.

I have also recieved those invitations but I accepted and joined the group.
While most of the conversation is above my head in the technical sense, I
still find it interesting anyway.
I keep hoping there will someday be some D-Star activity here in Palm Beach
County, Florida but for now, I'll keep my Icom IC-2820 ready and waiting
(meanwhile, it's a fine analog unit.

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Programming For Simplex?

2008-11-08 Thread ki4umx
Our area is scheduled for a D-Star repeater when funding is
available, so a few of us are planning to get the radios and operate
Simplex until the magic day arrives. My question is - Do I need to use
MYCALL and URCALL when operating Simplex? I suspect that I do, but
wanted to check with someone who has used Simplex.

Hank,

Technically no, but you probably want to use them anyway. When you
have MYCALL set to KI4UMX you ID every tinme you key up. If you set
URCALL to CQCQCQ that is generally the CQ message. BTW, if you have
MYCALL set it will show on the other station's display when you key
up. There may also be a few folks who will want to try Callsign
Squelch, in which case you will want to put their callsign in the
URCALL slot.

John,

Thanks for the reply.

If I understand your explanation, using URCALL of CQCQCQ will reach
anyone on frequency UNLESS they are using Callsign Squelch?

Only one of us has a D-Star radio so far (can you say Santa?)

I have been using a Dongle for several months, but our local (and

Georgia Public Television has installed the antennas, power, and
Internet to all their towers - Only waiting on FEMA funding for the

Hank,

That is correct. Actually, it doesn't matter what is in the URCALL
field if the receiver is not set to either callsign or group squelch,
but CQCQCQ is the convention (and will be useful when you get a
repeater/gateway).

Welcome to D-STAR and may Santa be generous. (My family went together
and bought me a nice 2820H for my birthday this year).
