Scott, you need to get with Tony, KG4EXA, who admins the W4BUG
dstar system (www.w4bug.net), We have lots of people who
check into the Florida Dstar Net on Wednesday nights from down

Right now, it is off line, due to factory repair. Should be
back up this week of next, as of the email I got Wednesday.

Hope to talk to you soon.

Re: [dstar_digital] Sync. cable

2008-10-24 Thread Evans F. Mitchell KD4EFM / AFA2TH / WQFK-894 {linux box}
Check Radio Shack. What your looking for is a USB-A to USB-B cable.
USB-A is a mini usb connector
USB-B is the regular 5 pin flat connector.
What you are probably looking for is a Male USB- A to Female USB-B.

Now, your question is rather obscure in the sense that you want to
hook and ID800 to an ID-1.

First of all why?

Second, if your wanting to hook the GPS to the ID-800, your going
to need to get another GPS reciever that has a DB-9 connection.
With that, you then need to build a cable with a DB-9 and then
build a mini-DIN to interface to the ID-800.
(diagram I believe is in the files section of this yahoo group)

I can not speak for having GPS on the ID-1, but would imagine if
you have UI-View32 or something that will output the GPS data to
the USB port of your pc (desktop or laptop), then you should in
this case be able to transmit via low speed data on the ID-1, your
GPS information.

I have not tried that, nor can I at the moment, I use a 2820 for
my D-PRS positions only. The ID-1 I am using, I use for other stuff
plus high speed data to communicate with the gateway.

Wish I could give you some more light on this, but that is it.

Subject: [dstar_digital] Repeater Linking (Help me see my errors please!)

Last night I was attempting to link through our local D-STAR Cluster
to one of our users that was on deployment for Hurricane Ike. I ran
into an issue where my programming allowed him to talk to us, but my
programming here wouldn't allow me to talk to him. Would you please
help me figure out where I went wrong. My settings were as follows:

To represent a space in a callsign I will use the * (asterisk).

Local Repeater: Denton, TX
W5NGU**A
W5NGU**B
W5NGU**C
W5NGU**G

Remote Repeater: San Antonio, TX
WD5STR*B
WD5STR*C

I was attempting to connect from the Denton, TX Port B to the San
Antonio, TX Port C. My programming on the Icom ID-800 was as follows:

MyCall: KD5EOC*E
UrCall: /WD5STRC
RPT1: W5NGU**B
RPT2: W5NGU**G

I was never able to make a connection. Yes, the gateway has a
registered user of KD5EOC in the system also, I know that the call
works as there is an ID-1 that can pull Internet without an issue.

When that didn't work I tried a different setting:

MyCall: KD5EOC*E
UrCall: WD5STRBL
RPT1: W5NGU**B
RPT2: W5NGU**G

I tried the above settings at the suggestion of Dale KB5NFT. I
couldn't talk with these either, but I kept hearing the repeater voice
say Port B Linked.

I also tried to connect directly to the user with the following settings.

MyCall: KD5EOC*E
UrCall: WB5NZV*H
RPT1: W5NGU**B
RPT2: W5NGU**G

This didn't work either. Funny thing is that I could hear them without
any problems. I just couldn't talk to them. Does anyone have any
suggestions? Oh, the ID-800 antenna I was using is on the same tower
as the D-STAR Cluster so signal issues aren't the problem.

Alos, we were trying not to use a Reflector so that we could ensure we
had direct connection in case of a catastrophic infrastructure failure.

Thanks,

Eric Gildersleeve KD7CAO

port to port calling would be the stroke call sign port ( /WD5STRB )
however, they have to do the same back to you.

Other wise, since they are on the Reflector, just connect to the
reflector and call.

meant R slots as in repeater slots... b/c/g to me is repeater ports.

In the cs-2820 there are 2 memory slots for repeaters and Urcall, for 120
combinations.

That was what I was also referring to, if you run out of the 120, you can
use the
other memory channels to add other to.
the 2820 holds 500 memories. I am not sure about the 800.

Greetings all, I am on a mission.

I have in my hands an antenna ONCE produced by Larsen Antennas,
it's a 3dB Gain, NMO mount, 1.2GHz Mobile antenna.
Now that Larsen Antennas had bought out ANTENNA SPEC., I am at a loss for
finding
this neat 16 inch NMO antenna. It has the famous Larsen black base that
you would find on the 800/900 antennas but the whip has two one turn coils
and is in a black finish. The base label has the word SPECIAL on the bottom
and Larsen Antenna on the top of the label. Pretty much looks like a feed
thru type of Larsen Base, other then the tuned whip for 23cm.

I would be interested in locating some of these for use in Florida.
This antenna was purchased at AES Orlando back in 1995. I have not
been able to locate any sort of antenna resembling this one I have,
as it seems the Diamond N Mount tribander and I think two others, is
all I have been able to Google. If anyone knows a contact at Larsen
could you pass this on and find out if it can be special ordered still?

IF a photo is needed, I will try to see if photos can be uploaded to
the group photo folder. If not, I will try to push a photo over to
our KJ4ACN gateway for people to take a look at it..

Hi Bob,
One would think that would be the consensus to one's thought
for regional reflector setups... I would think one reflector per state
would be over kill, but something like 4 reflectors per time zone would
be easier to maintain.

Who to contact for one? Robin Cutshaw, AA4RC

So if a number of local D-STAR systems would like to
create a regional network the best approach would be
to probably setup a region specific "reflector" ...

Where does one find info about how to set one up?

Please visit the following sites:

tools and DPLUS INFORMATION: www.opendstar.org/tools/readme.txt

How To Dstar Calculator, www.dstarinfo.com
(this shows you how to setup your radio in various forms)

As for Reflector information, that is somewhat a behind the scenes
kind of thing. The gateway that has DPLUS installed on it, knows what
and where the reflectors are. As to how many since it's inception, there
are now 10 reflectors online since Robin's latest update of DPLUS.

When an admin connects a gateway to a reflector, the link is via DPLUS,
therefore, your talk as you would locally.
URCALL (your call) is set to CQCQCQ
RPT1 (repeater your talking on) is set to your local call sign and module
RPT2 (your gateway call sign)

That's it.

Also, backing up Pete's DPRS interface to APRS, when using GPS-A mode
on a 2820, you will want to have your default memory channel setup the
same way, local repeater on RPT1, and the gateway RPT2. Use CQCQCQ as well.
Your (or anyone in this matter) with a 2820, and GPS-A turned on, there
position will report to the APRS network, and also to dstarusers.org.

I hope this is helpful enough for you.
Happy DIGITALING!!

2008-08-19 Thread Evans F. Mitchell; KD4EFM / AFA2TH / WQFK 894
I will have to blast both of you for this... not flame now

2820, best used for EMCOMM operations... why?
you can dual monitor, better yet, you can send data on
UHF or VHF and still listen to your local ANALOG repeater
on the opposite bandV/U DATA or V DATA / U, fits my needs
as an EC.

Second of all, with the HUD with the GPS COMPASS and RANGE, makes
SAR work simple, EVEN when you have ui-view hooked up and reading
data from the data port, or using it for GPS. Yeah, I like that too,
kinda techie, but it serves it's purpose. I can be on uiview with
GPS pushing into the laptop on com1, or using com1 to read the GPS-A
from the data side and have it plot on uiview, without having to use
the dstar monitor application... pretty nifty.

Price, priceless when it comes to saving lives. worthless if you bicker
about it.

$859.95??? I've purchased two, both in the low $500's, but that was
before the price increase a month or so ago. Just for comparision,
Gigaparts is asking $579.99 today. Others may be a few bucks cheaper.

Excellent point! I'd not thought of that because I could not swallow
the price tag, but you would need two AMBE decoders to listen
simultaneously to two digital bands (and it only comes with one), so
it's really still a mono-band digital radio.

NO HARM no fault (foul) that is an ok output.

when using dplus to connect to a reflector or to another repeater,
the normal mode of communication would be URCALL = CQCQCQC.

I'd suggest starting at the basics. Restart the server and make sure that
all of the services are running. Then check the DPLUS.log to make sure that
it started correctly. If you have the GUI loaded, then try browsing the web.

My first recommendation would to be to make sure that DNS is working
correctly.

Greetings all,
Just got a phone call from Ralph, n0lo, the
W4BUG G2 gateway is now hooked up and live! Now that they have
Internet service at the repeater site, they now join the growing
list of gateways in Florida.

Currently there is a minor issue with the 2m side, but the 440 B side is
alive and well.

We will have a couple of items to adjust this evening, but for the most
part,
"W4BUG G" is now the Southern Most G2 Gateway in Florida. Look for the gang
to come up on the south eastern Skywarn net tonight at 9 pm on REF001 port

I like your write up, BUT, there is something missing here.

Are you switching from 5Khz deviation to 2.5Khz deviation while
doing your test???

D-Star transmits at 2.5KHz, not 5KHz.
There is a difference there...

Focus needs to / could be with 900MHz equipment since it already
does 2.5KHz bandwidth, even though the lack of 900 gear, though
I would also like to see a 220 D-Star too, lots of band
but lack of equipment.

Heck to make it worth while, for the HSMM junkies,
why not have a 1.54Meg BW 220MHz ID-220 ??? Think about it,
2.4 has too much part 15 noise to say, but bring it down
where the Fresnel zone does not become an issue LONG DISTANCE
HOPS that are NLOS or NON-LOS for Emcomm use, NOW YOUR DOING SOMETHING!

Hello,

As part of our Dstar/Analog testing (see the thread posted several
months ago) we modified a Mastr II repeater to transmit, alternately,
Dstar and analog signals: For analog, we used the radio's phase
modulator and for Dstar, we used the direct-FM on the compensation
line. In our opinion, the Mastr II produced a better-quality signal
than the IC-91AD, mostly because it didn't suffer from the "PLL
Bounce" problem that the direct-FM modulated Icom radios have (e.g.
associated with the PLL trying to track the low-frequency components
of the modulation.)

WD8MKG, NS9RC, and VE6GHZ have positive longitudes for their DStarMonitor

negative longitudes (west longitudes are negative).

WD8MKG is using a negative latitude in DStarMonitor (and therefore
javAPRSSrvr). This should be positive (south latitudes are negative).

With the G2 DStarMonitor, simply modify dstarmonitor.properties in the
directory where DStarMonitor.jar resides. Then, run "/etc/init.d/dsm
restart".

RE: [dstar_digital] Re: DD with ID1

2008-05-10 Thread Evans F. Mitchell KD4EFM / AFA2TH / WQFK-894
I was involved in a simple discussion today (Saturday) about
ID-1's and the INTERNET

KEEP THIS IN MIND, Are you using the ID-1 that will not violate the
understanding
of PART 97 ( or your countries laws on Amateur Radio Operations)

In the INTRANET world, where you are using it for EMCOMM purposes,
and not just surfing the internet, then everything would be well within
our practices of preserving amateur radio, anything other then that, would
or can, be a violation. This has been something that the HSMM Committee has
been
worried about, and still, to this day still.

This discussion is VERY important to all of us, not just in the US, but
world
wide.

I for one, have not put too much thought into the ID-1, and what it REALLY
can
do. Therefore, I could just as easily put myself and my license in harms way
without even thinking about it. Never again would I, even in my own home,
use
an ID-1, to just go surfing the net via my own PART 97 802.11 wifi

I had the biggest wake-up call hit me today at a simple ham function where
there were several of us demonstrating and showing off what we can do with
D-Star. AND most of all, my Internet provider, an ARRL Life Member, was
the one to tell me so, as he took part of the ARRL HSMM committee.
OOPPP. the statement "Las Vegas is Calling", came to more then a
crashing HALT.
I am not one to bend Part 97, but when it does come to how we up hold
ourselves,
in the eye of the public, and our Emergency Management Agencies.
OH yeah, I am all about making sure what I, along with the others in
Florida,
do is that we protect what we hold dear to our hearts, OUR HOBBY.
We don't get paid to do what we do best, we just DO IT.

Now, as far as the DD box and multiple radio's, with what "IN HOUSE" testing
I have
done, both on the internet, and INTRANET, radio to radio is not that hard,
you just
use CQCQCQ, as far as a DD box goes at a tower site, with internet access, I
will not
comment, I have not moved on to this testing phase YET... Therefore anything
other
then radio to radio, I am NOT going to make any statement on, because I do
not know
the true answer. I would like to know more on the DD stuff with a
controller, and
hope to see more questions and answer on this sole topic. If I am going to
present
this on a bigger scale then what I thought I was doing already, then I need
more
information on this method of operation. IP is IP, but do know this, if you
are using an RP2C, and along with it, the G2 software on a gateway, we all
need to
take a break (stop and think moment) and look at this a little more
carefully.
YES, this is new technology, and while there's that squabble about those
last two
motions the FCC turned down, we very well could damage ourselves with the
carelessness
of using the ID-1's and the DD's on gateways for things that ought not to
happen,
PERIOD. You know the phrase, Would you be using the interconnect to order
pizza???

Would that not be the same thing as you using your ID-1 in data mode
to order pizza on line, through the gateway?

This is a very important subject that needs to be handled with due care.
No more then we have been getting this (D-STAR) rolling quickly,
the FCC can just as quick KILL IT, and then we are S O L when it comes to DD
and D-Star.

I am not calling for flaming or anything else, just admitting I did
something wrong.
I have been told that I was doing something wrong,
and never thought about it, therefore, why let others experience
the same when I can share it, we all learn from it, correct it,
and make it BETTER. FOR ALL OF US.

Thanks.

2008-05-08 Thread Evans F. Mitchell KD4EFM / AFA2TH / WQFK-894
Robert, Buddy is NOT against this as you have mentioned...

We have ham's 100 miles away, using an analog on the same frequency,
and our D-Star repeater is walking over their analog output

It has nothing to do with him accepting the new technology, he, like
myself, are pushing it full speed ahead. So no, Buddy was commenting on
the fact our dstar system is built so good, on worse case scenario, we
can use the system out 50+ miles. Now that being said, 50 miles towards
Daytona Beach, yeah, a mobiles transmission would in fact be heard on
an unsquelched Analog repeater, even though there is a separation of 108
mile from each site. Our site is 620 ASL where as the Daytona Bch site is
at 230 ASL (on the coast), we put out 75 watts into the duplexer, they put
out 25. Who is gona win this tropo contest?? Well, we did, cause we were
out talking the Daytona repeater and there were station UNDER the site
who could not hear the repeater because of our transmissions

Case closed.

Evans

[ED - Let's not get personalities into the discussion. There are technical
issues to understand, but every area is different and one size solutions will
not suffice. For example, tropo is extremely rare in the mountain west, and
populations are sparse, but repeaters are often over 4000' HAAT and present
unique co-channel challenges as compared to relatively flat land. Local
experience and coordination bodies will learn and adapt.]

I doubt there will ever be one just yet... a 10 watt AP better then a 10mW
2.4 AP

I don't see one coming just yet... what needs to happen is Kenwood and Yeasu
got their acts in gear and catch up... D-Star train is fixing to leave the
station with out them

I'm considering making the D-STAR plunge via a pair of ID-1s. Does anyone
know if a replacement is imminent?

RE: [dstar_digital] GPS-A

2008-05-04 Thread Evans F. Mitchell KD4EFM / AFA2TH / WQFK-894
I would like to add to this just a little more, because I am
one to use both of the GPS modes that are available with the 2820.
The ID 800 on the other hand, I think is not GPS-A, but straight GPS. So
I think the 800's could use a firmware up lift but never
less, it too is useful for one thing for sure. Search and Rescue, and
RDF.

With the 2820 as a command station, use of the GPS only mode,
you can use the position screen to see who where, and how far they
are from your location. Still need mapping functions to plot there
locations visually thou...

Weather or not we use GPS or GPS-A, should not be a controlled thing,
it is more or less up to the user. With the latest update on DSM
(DStarMonitor) each mode can now be captured and become visible
to those who have the need to see it, or those who are just curious
enough to want to know. Both modes are fun, and for me, when I make
a long distance call over the gateway, I sometimes enable G mode just
in case someone with a 2820 elsewhere can capture my location and
see actually how far I am from them kinda fun seeing my friends
in Missouri are 931 air miles from me, yet it's a 1100 mile pavement
road trip in 19.5 hours.

Have fun, but make the best of both, not just one.

The Position screen on the 2820 is not more then a how far away they are and
what their lat lon is it is not a map type deal like the Kenwood
tm700d

either way, you still need a pc with a mapping program or aprs type program
to get the full effective advantage.

Hi folks,

I thought I'd offer this radio here before putting it up on eBay.

I have an IC-2820 with the GPS/D-STAR board and programming software for
sale. It's roughly a year old and is in good shape. It has NOT been returned
to Icom for the mic/firmware fix.

$750 via paypal secures with free USPS Priority shipping. Buyer pays
optional insurance.

did that here in Florida... used a crossover cable, Linksys befsr41, was
able to set to CQCQCQ and was able to pull DHCP, and work it from my house up
to one mile.

antenna was only 7 feet off the ground... mobile was with an antennax 1.2 5Db
mobile with mag mount...

wish I had more to validate, but one on one, CQ mode, no problem surfing and
sending email, and AOL IM's.
