[DX-CHAT] Schizoprhenia
I have always thought it would be interesting to be a billionaire and be able to go on a DXpedition to the number 1 most wanted entity. W4?, hmm that sounds like a call of someone who called me a _ because I defended not using phonetics on the county hunter's nets back in 2012. "Sorry OM, too much qrm and qrn, maybe you can work the next DXpedition to get the last one you need for top of the honor roll, QRZ". Seriously though, I really don't need to subscribe to any of these forums. I could bash myself to death. I am a DXer, DXpeditioner, County Hunter, Net Operator, ARRL OO, ARRL VE, occasional echolink operator, contester, etc. So, if my various personalities ever split, I will be in trouble. "You work DX on a net. That's pathetic, expecting to be "spoon fed" all your contacts" "Bam, Bam, Bam". "Oh yea, well it's better than you're pathetic bleating out your "last two" for 2 days straight" "Bam, Bam , Bam". "Echolink, that's not even ham radio" "Bam, Bam, Bam" "Well, at least I can talk to my friend in Australia, You have to repeat your call 10 times before the DX can get it right because you're so weak, then he gives you 59" "Bam, Bam, Bam" "You're a contester? All they do is hog the band and call CQ Contest with a machine, and I can't operate the only day of the week I have off. There is a contest every weekend". "Bam, Bam, Bam" "Too bad, it is such a waste of band for you to talk to the same guy every day for the last 20 years talking about you're gout. Get a life" "Bam, Bam, Bam" "All you Dxpeditioners care about is getting money. Trying to extort us to buy a qsl" Bam, Bam, Bam" "Well my XYL is ready to kill me because I had to charge 3,000 qsls on the Visa, after already putting $3000 on there for the trip. Now I have all these Buro cards, which will be coming for the next 10 years, and US request with no SASE. I will have to put envelopes and stamps on the Visa too. And what am I supossed to do with this request which has a $20 bill in it, but the guys not in the log? Cheap DXers" "Bam Bam Bam" "County Hunting. They get their contacts like fish in the barrel, and the NC tells them the callsign. That's not even a contact in my book. "Bam, Bam, Bam" "You gave me an OO notice for 45 minutes with no id? Why don't you get a life? Don't you have anything better to do? Brown shirt OOs anyway" "Bam, Bam, Bam". I could go on, but, man, I am getting sore. My various factions could beat themselves into oblivion! 73, Duane, WV2B "You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." [DX-CHAT] spots
The point is not to get the call from the spots. But, for example, last Friday I ran counties all day while traveling between NC and NY. I mostly worked from the same group of 25-30 county hunters who were on that day. Many of them I have been working since I started that aspect of the hobby 30 years ago. I know their calls, their names, their wives names, and even some of the dogs names. Does it make sense for me to give my call phonetically every time when the audience is not the whole broad world of hamdom, but the usual 30 guys I often work, and maybe 1 guy who started a couple days ago, and who may stick with it or may disappear? My call is given at the beginning and end of the run by the NC station and numerous times by myself during the run. Yes, it is a very difficult call, but what is the big deal if somemone confirms what they heard by looking at a spot? After all, didn't DXers know the call of ST0R before the operation even happened? Maybe those contacts don't count, since it could be argued maybe they wouldn't have gotten it right if they had not seen it beforehand in a DX bulliten? No one is asking anyone to take part if it is not fun for them and it somehow violates your sense of dignity. But, as we set out to bash other ham activities, remember there is plenty of material for the bashers in our own activities as well, and we might not like that situation. Do unto others and all such. It is just a hobby. When you die your DXCC certificate and my county hunter awards go to the dump. Enjoy it while you're here, and let others have fun with what they want to do. Maybe someone will make DXCC honor roll on echolink. Who cares. If that's what they want to do, let them enjoy it. It doesn't degrade what you have done. 73, Duane "You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." [DX-CHAT] St. Paul island CY9 QSL project
Hi Folks, I greatly appreciate all the help with qsls for the St. Paul Island Museum. I have the album assembled, but I thought I would put out a final call for the cards I am still missing. We still need the following: VE1CR/1 1979VE1BL 1981VE1ASJ/1 1982VE1CER 1982W5KNE/1 1988WA2UJH/CY9 1993CY9CWI {South Island} 1993WA4DAN/CY9 {et al} 1995CY9SS 1997CY9AOE 1998CY9SS 1999CY9RF 1999 While I would prefer cards which had been issued to a station making a contact, I would be more than happy to accept a blank or sample card from the operators. That is a lot of blank spaces in the display book, so hopefully we can come up with at least a few more of them. There may also be more expeditions with cards I don't know about? [DX-CHAT] St. paul island CY9 QSLS for museum
Hi folks, I am interested in creating a display of qsls from DXpeditions to St. Paul Island {Nova Scotia, Canada} CY9, for donation to the St. Paul isand museum located in Dingwall, NS. Sorry, i just can't afford to pay $10 for each one on eBay, but would like to be sure the museum is able to recognize the history of DXpeditions and radio operation from the island with a display of actual QSL cards issued for contacts from the island. So, if anyone has old cards they no longer want, have duplicates of, from an SK or whatever, I would sure like to have them. Just need one from each activation in good condition for framing and display. Incidently, the lighthouse from SW st. paul which had been on display at the Coast Guard HQ in Dartmouth is now at the museum and being reassembled there. [DX-CHAT] IRC Answer
Here is the answer I received from another clerk on a Postal Forum. It deals with the POS system {the windows system in larger offices}. "There is a key on the POS, Foreign Exchange Key that you use to do the transaction. Round date the coupon, put it with your stamp stock, the coupon will be counted as a stamp, when the PM returns stamps that are no longer saleable, they will return the IRC to get credit. Close out in the evening as you normally do, it does not affect the deposit." Go to your PM armed with this info and it should help. For IRT or Manual offices it should be no problem, they can just do the exchange and do not have to enter anything at that time in the system. I hope this helps. 73, Duane, WV2B USPS Clerk To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. [DX-CHAT] Pileup control

DX- Was that Whiskey four Alpha Mike Papa? Whiskey papa, Whiskey Papa, Whiskey Papa, Whiskey papa, Whiskey Papa, Whiskey papa, roger roger Whiskey four Alpha Mike Papa, KD8??, KE4???,N1???, = 100 more. DX- QRZ. That was a transcription of an actial qso, you can copnfirm with W4AMP if you would like, other calls left incomplete to protect he guilty. W4AMP was left not knowing if he was in the log correct, TI9KK was left not knowing if she had it correct, but moved on out of desperation, and that's how every contact went. Now, was it TI9KKs fault? How should she have controlled the pileup? Should she have just qrted? Shoild she have gone split, if she knew how? Here's another suggestion- Why can't the DXer have some miniscule partical of self-control? If it's not for you, why is it immpossible to stand by? If repeating your partial or call over and over again isn't working why continue? Is it the DXers fault for not maintaining control and keeping a good rate, or is it the pileup's fault for not listening? Should something extraordinary be required to force all stations not W4AMP to stand by, or should they have the brains all on their own to understand if they allow the DX to work W4AMP quickly she will get to them more quickly, but if they make it take 4 minutes to work W4AMP the liklihood of their getting into the log has been seriously diminished? I found it interesting to read that some DXpeditons fake a contact to keep the pace, or say a partial they didn't hear and often someone with that partial comes back. Yes, if the DX asks for a specific station, and doesn't follow through that is not a good thing, but if the DX station has persisted for 4 or 5 calls and others refuse to stand by whose fault is it? What option does the DX then have to maintain control. Should they then stop and lecture and scold as if to children? Or what is the solution? Also, I don't buy that it is people new to HF. The calls I looked up were long time licensees. Virtually all were extras. One of the best ops {unfortunatley} was aGeneral operating out of his band who had been licensed since 1989 {at least when the license was last modified}. So I don't think it can all be blamed on the newcomers. 73, Duane "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."- Ralph Waldo Emerson _ Click for a credit repair consultation, raise your FICO score. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2121/fc/Ioyw6i3m2LZ619tSIzF21Bly424gdKBH5FF0tZb93T1byD8airpC6o/ Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] Ungrateful
Last evening I spent a good amount of time listening to the TI9KK operation on 14.205. Frankly I was amazed that the YL op could get anything out of the undisciplined, coontinuous-callling mess. But I was absolutely horrified when after the YL signed off stations started commenting that they hope they have better operators, and harshly criticizing the operator. Do these ill-mannered people {without the nerve to identify} realize that even though the op signed off she was likely still listening on the frequency? Perhaps the operator was not the most experienced, but did the pileup operators do anyhting to make it the least bit easier on her? No. What about the station in the Carribean who repeated the first 2 letters of his call phonetically for 20 seconds or more at a time? Or all the others who continued calling when the call identified obviously was nothing similar to theirs? Multiply that by 10 and that was what the yL had to work through. What about the General Class operators heard? Come on guys. If you want to be a DXer spend $25 for the manual, memorize the answers and upgrade. Why do you think you should be adding to your DXCC total by operating on frequencies not allowed by your license? Too bad ARRL doesn't have the nerve to disqualify these guys. It amazes me that DXers appear to be reasonable people in their lives otherwise. Most are professionals, but they can't figure out that transmitting while the DX station is transmitting, when the call identified is not them, or continuously for long periods of time is just stupid. And, even on a simplex operation the policeman are there. The YL asked folks to stand by for 5 minutes. of course, some kept calling. So certain stations felt obliged to lecture the pileup for the whole 5 minutes about how they were suppossed to be standing by, somehow missing the fact that they were also ignoring the direction and not standing by. What good were they doing? And of course, unidentified. So, when criticism of the DX is considered, consider turning the DX mirror the other way as well. If we take a good look we might be surprised what we see if we take an honest look. That YL went there to help others by giving them a contact. And they rudely insulted her, and harshly criticised her. That was totally uncalled for, If you want to criticize, criticize the operators who prevented her from doing a good job. If a guest came to your house and brought you a gift, would you criticize them because you didn't think they did a good job wrapping it, or maybe wasn't what you were expecting or hoping for? No that would be rude. So why do it to Dxpeditioners. Threy went there to give you a gift, the actions of the recipients prevented many from receiving the gift, and they blamed the giver. Of course, surely these were all inexperienced Dxers just getting started, right? Given a chance, hopefully they will learn better and not keep repeating the same mistakes, right? And, when they take the time away from work and their families, and travel on a boat for 40 hours, and live on the boat, and take a rowboat into the jungle and operate I am sure they wikll show us just how it is done, won't they? Hopefully the YL did not hear those comments and won't decide to lump the whole thing. She has good reason to. 73, Duane, WV2B "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."- Ralph Waldo Emerson _ Click to become a designer and quit your boring job. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2121/fc/Ioyw6i3l7L9qdPkAScyWszJgtZjN1tij43VnEhqQVoKXjfBoaclkCA/ Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] a disgrace to ham radio
While I agree with the observations, amateurs cannot expect these government agencies to solve our problems. They do not have the money, personnel, or interest to soend on something so trivial in the grand scheme of things {not trivial to us, but to them}. What can we do? Well, I can't help but notice that the Official Observer post for the Maritimes is vacant, and has been for as long as I can remember. Also many other areas of Canada as well. One reason may be that there are way less problems in Canada than the US in general. Also, I'm not sure what kind of promotion RAC gives the program, or how well it supports its volunteers. It does have a different slant from the US program, relying almost excusively on positive reinforcement, and not encouraging advisory notices at all. But that is somewhat off subject, as the stations in question do not id, hence cannot respond to any type of voluntary compliance efforts. That said, I can say the FCC can and will enforce regualtions in the US. But, and its a big but, the amateur community must supply foolproof and lawsuit proof evidence before they will act. The burden is on us. If we can provide reliable evidence usable in court and reviewed by the legal department of the ARRL first, they will act. When you see the enforcement letters which reference evidence they have regarding violations it is often the result of many hours of evidence gathering on the part of Official Observers around the country. The type of interference described is virtually immpossible to refer to the FCC, unless perhaps an OO lives next door to a perpetrator. It is of very short duration, unidentified, and maybe not repeated until the next big DXpedition {we know it has to be fellow DXers}. To expect the FCC to send out a van to track down such interference would be ridiculous. So, what is the solution? I don't know, do you? I can't explain why things have gotten so much worse lately, unless the general downturn in society in general. many people have no regard for anyone but themselves. There is no quick fix for that. Perhaps better training early would help, but then most serious problems originate with htose holding the highest class licenses, who have been licensed for many years, and perhaps passeda 20 WPM code test. These jammers also would seem to have built up a respectable station if they can cause that much havock. They are not the newbies with a vertical and 100 watts. I guess the only solution is to ignore if you can and steal their pleasure. If you can't, then do what you have to to make contacts somewhere. Swift and sure justice might cause some to mend their ways. Then again, I have heard examples where operators knew they were being monitored and evidence gathered and they keep right on, even after FCC station inspections, warning letters, etc. There is a certain segment that just have emotional problems, ego problems, or whatever, and refuse to become a part of polite society. Any ideas of combating the problem are encouraged. 73, Duane, WV2B {VA1ZZZ} www.sabledx.com "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."- Ralph Waldo Emerson Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] JA DX Groups
hi Folks, Thanks for all the ideas. I have sent info to JARL, etc. But, haven't recieved much response. There are many groups which have supported DXpeditions, but can't find any comntact info. Here is an example: Tokyo 610 DX Group http://www.catv296.ne.jp/~dxweb/ They have supported Dxpeditons, but no contact info, not even the call of one member! 73, Duane, WV2B "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."- Ralph Waldo Emerson Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] Japanese DXpediton support
Dear fellow DXers, I am looking for someone who may be able to help with contacting clubs and groups in Japan. Many of the pages on the web either have non-functional E-mail contact addresses, or in some cases none at all. Others have generated no response. Any help would be appreciated, as the language barrier is perhaps a significant problem. [DX-CHAT] DXpedition radios
Hi Folks, Seems the 706 gets the worst reviews, and the data on the elecraft web page concurs. This is valuable info as we were considering a 706 as the 6 meter/beacon rig, but sounds like it is not a very good choice. The K3 was recommended often, but no one mentioned any actual experience, but the data looks the best. We will likely have at least one K3, as one op mentioned possibly purchasing one for the trip, but yes, they are expensive, especially if you get into the ATU and other options. The other choice seems to be the IC-7000. I know this has been used by several major expeditions. Cheaper than the K3, and hopefully not with the same troubles as the 706. No mention of any Kenwoods, other than a big negative on the TS-50. So not sure how the 570/480 class rank, but certainly not as good as the K3. There are probably other larger radios better suited, but weight limitations make the 8 lb class radios the ones of choice. Thanks for the input. [DX-CHAT] DXpedition radios
Hi folks, Anyone have experience with the current smaller size radios in a strong signal environment? Looking for something smaller like K3, FT-450, IC-7000, or ? Need something which will perform well with at least 3 stations closely spaced, questionable grounding, etc. Typical DXpediton situation. Ideally need to be able to operate 3 stations at once, with minimal inter-station interaction. Will use bandpass filters, etc., but any comments on which rigs have been better in this situation? [DX-CHAT] Old QSL routes needed
Hi Folks, Found some old qsls I had never sent among some of the stuff rescued from our house fire a few years ago. Need routes for the following: 0J0/JH1ARJ- July, 2001 3B6RF- May, 2001 5X1GS- Dec, 2000 5R8GY- May, 2001 D68C-- Feb, 2001 3DA0WPX- Jan, 2001 Any help appreciated. 73, Duane, WV2B www.sabledx.com "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."- Ralph Waldo Emerson Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] Surveys
Yes, I agree totally with Markus. The current surveys are next to useless for DXpeditions, not that I am putting down the efforts of those involved. But, DXpedtioners need to know a lot more detail. For example, there is little support for a DXpedition to Sable Island from the US because it is not currently in the top 100 for the US. At the same time, many comments are received like: sorry we can't support your DXpedition, because it is not in the top 100, but If you go I hope to work you on 160. We don't just need to know overall where it is on the big list. We need to know what bands/modes are most needed. What different areas of the world to target, even how many hams of what license class might need/want a contact {is it worth listening in the General band, for example}. That would be helpful with planning equipment, antennas, and operating strategy, even who to take as operators. Just knowing what number it is isn't a lot of help. A country may be number 100 on the list. What does that mean? Does that mean it is a waste of time to go there? Or perhaps is it desperately needed by a significant number of hams on certain bands/modes? Does being #100 mean you will call cq with no takers, or does it mean there are still 47,000 dxers in the US who would like to work it? BTW- I think we should shift this from news to chat, before the moderator has to tell us. The first post was news, now it is chat.
[DX-CHAT] Most wanted
First of all, any survey is a miniscule sampling. They are only answered by either subscribers of the publication, viewers of the web site, or the most active in the area of DX. There are many, many others who need a entity, and will work it if it is on, and ask for a QSL, but who will not respond to a survey. The DXCC survey was better, it listed countries that participants had not confirmed with DXCC. But, they discontinued that. While the top few on the surveys certainly merit support, there are many worthwhile DXpeditions worthy of support also. For many entities, there are a fair number of Dxpeditons, but many are "vacation" style. They work the 2 easiest areas, and give a year tic to the many DXers who have it. But, little is done to lessen the need in the hard to work areas. Well experienced and equipped DXpeditions which can fullfill the needs of the difficult areas and provide band/mode slots are important. A hundred Dxpeditions with a trap vertical and transceiver mainly on 20 meters will not satisfy the need. Each expedtion works the same guys as the last one. I think the most wanted list has little value in determining DXpedition support. Obviously the ones needed by the majority deserve support. But, many of the "lesser needed" ones will not happen without support, and the top of the honor rollers who reply to surveys may not need it, but many thousands of others need it for the first time, and even the honor rollers may need it somewhere for a band/mode slot. Just my opinion.
