[DX-NEWS] ZL8X update 3 Dec 2010
http://www.kermadec.de/news/news_archives/index.php?task=shownewsid=22 News 03.12.2010 Written by DL1MGB, December 3rd 2010, 02:27 160m operation update With over 3,500 QSOs already in our log one might think that pile-ups are getting smaller on Top Band. But there are still a lot of stations who want to get their chance to make it in our 160m log. In the last days we observed bad behaviours of cluster users which makes our and the caller's life very hard. We have following advice for all of you: * Do not spot our split frequency! Those who hear us also can copy our split frequency, those who do not hear us should also not call us! * Do not spot us if we are already spotted! It just produces more QRM! * Do not spot us if we have to move our TX frequency to avoid additional QRM! * Tell us in the cluster when we are jammed on our TX frequency! We will read the cluster spots and can move immediately to another frequency. * We will only work SSB when there is no pile-up on CW. So please do not ask for SSB when there is a CW pile-up! We are very sorry but last night our beverage to North America was broken. So it was very hard to copy NA stations in the S9 noise of the ground plane. We will repair it during daytime today. RTTY operation update You already might observed that we extended our RTTY operation to more bands than originally planned. This is due to the decreasing pile-ups on the bands. So if the pile-Ups in CW or in SSB are not too high we also offer RTTY operation on that band. Because the demand for a CW QSO on 80m is still high we will definitely not offer RTTY operation there. --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. However, it was also being used by the Principality of Seborga in May of 1995. Talk about confusing! I don't know who had it in 1981. T8 may have been one of the many prefixes used by South African homelands, i.e.: S4 (Ciskei) = ZS S8 (Transkei) = ZS T4 (Venda) = ZS H5 (Bophutatswana) = ZS V9 (Venda) = ZS (ref: http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/prefix_refs.html) But that's just speculation. T8 was used from Seborga starting May 1995 (ref: http://freenet-homepage.de/dl8aam/Seborga.html) T8 was allocated by the ITU to Palau in 1996 (see above reference). [DX-NEWS] Club Log
Club Log is a web-based application which uses a database to analyse amateur radio log files, which are uploaded in the common ADIF format. Using the logs, it is possible to build band-mode league tables of amateurs' QSOs, provide efficient log search tools and create most wanted lists for DXCC entities (both over all time and in recent history, or by mode for example). Also, Club Log can give back to its users the ability to find wanted DX spots, and other analysis of their logs which might be hard to do with normal logging software. [DX-NEWS] Removing cats to protect birds backfires on Macquarie Island
By MICHAEL CASEY, AP Environmental Writer Michael Casey, Ap Environmental Writer – Tue Jan 13, 9:18 am ET BANGKOK, Thailand – It seemed like a good idea at the time: Remove all the feral cats from a famous Australian island to save the native seabirds. But the decision to eradicate the felines from Macquarie island allowed the rabbit population to explode and, in turn, destroy much of its fragile vegetation that birds depend on for cover, researchers said Tuesday. Removing the cats from Macquarie caused environmental devastation that will cost authorities 24 million Australian dollars ($16.2 million) to remedy, Dana Bergstrom of the Australian Antarctic Division and her colleagues wrote in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090113/ap_on_re_au_an/as_australia_rabbit_infestation_1 -- Jim Reisert AD1C/Ø, jjreis...@alum.mit.edu, http://www.ad1c.us --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-NEWS] WAS LoTW Account Information
WAS LoTW Account Information Jan 9, 2009 11:25 ET Bill Moore, NC1L Some users may have noticed that their WAS totals have changed or have completely gone away. On Jan 1, 2009 LoTW refreshed all WAS accounts to accommodate the new Triple Play award. Your Triple Play record is shown as a sub award in your WAS account just as band and mode sub-awards are shown. If your account had no QSO rules then the system had no way of applying your QSO credits. This is easily fixed by adding a rule to your WAS account. All WAS accounts must have at least one rule. To add a rule to your WAS account simply access your WAS account then select 'MODIFY ACCOUNT'. Follow these steps to complete the process: Click 'Add Rule To QSO Set' Next, select the type of rule you want to apply. Drop the box down, make your selection then click 'Add Rule' (Next it may ask you here to select a callsign if you have more than one account. If so, select the callsign you want to change). If there is only one callsign in the account the next screen will say 'Save Account Changes' Click this and your account should be OK now. Note, if you feed more than one WAS account for different locations you must do this for each account. Some accounts are very simple and will only require a callsign rule. Other accounts may be more complex requiring multiple rules to accommodate your operations. WAS accounts can be configured to automatically select those of your QSOs that both qualify for a WAS award and also match a set of rules you specify. A QSO Set is a list of rules that define QSOs that will be matched. Your account can include more than one QSO Set if needed to encompass all of your QSOs that are eligible for the awards. The rules that make up a QSO Set each compare the value of a field related to the QSO. The fields that may be used for this comparison are the call sign you used to make the QSO, the QSO date, and several geographical fields. At least one rule must be included in a QSO Set in order to match any QSOs. If more than one rule is present in the QSO Set, you may choose whether the QSOs must match all of the specified rules or any of the specified rules. 73 es DX! [DX-NEWS] ARRL's New Triple Play Worked All States Award
[May not be the best forum to post this, but couldn't think of a better one.] From the ARRL Logbook of the World web site: Jan 1, 2009: ARRL's New Triple Play Worked All States Award -- 1. The Triple Play WAS (Worked All States) Award is available to all amateurs worldwide who must use Logbook of the World (LoTW) to confirm QSOs with each of the 50 states on voice, CW, and digital modes. The Triple Play WAS Award is a serial-numbered award starting with # 1, as determined by the time stamp of the electronic application submitted via LoTW. Awards issued will be tracked and presented on the ARRL Website. 2. Two-way communications must be established on amateur bands with each state on each mode. There is no minimum signal report required. Any or all bands (except 60 Meters) may be used for the Triple Play WAS. The District of Columbia may be counted for Maryland. 3. Contacts must be made from the same location, or from locations no two of which are more than 50 miles apart. Club station applicants, please include clearly the club name and callsign of the club station (or trustee). 4. Contacts must be made after Z on January 1, 2009 to be considered for this award. LoTW will be programmed to automatically use this criterion. Contacts must be confirmed via LoTW. Written confirmations will not be accepted. 5. There are no endorsements for the Triple Play WAS Award. 6. Contacts made through repeater devices or any other power relay method cannot be used for WAS confirmation. A separate WAS is available for Satellite contacts. All stations contacted must be land stations. Contact with ships, anchored or otherwise, and aircraft, cannot be counted. EXCEPTION: Permanently docked exhibition ships, such as the Queen Mary and other historic ships will be considered land based. 7. A US applicant must be an ARRL member to participate in the WAS program. DX stations are exempt from this requirement. 8. Attempts to falsify data, logs, or other application operations may be grounds for disqualification. The decision of the ARRL Awards Committee in such cases is final. 9. Please follow the instructions presented on the LoTW website. The cost of the Triple Play WAS award is $12 for a certificate delivered to a U.S. address, or $13 delivered to an address outside U.S.A. Per-QSO fees associated with using LoTW credits as normal will be charged via the online application. Read more about the award in QST and see the certificate. [DX-NEWS] ADIF to CQ DX Marathon
The CQ DX Marathon is an annual recognition issued by CQ Magazine. It is the sum total of the number of different entities, plus the number of CQ zones, worked in a given year. This conversion program reads an ADIF log and writes a comma-delimited spreadsheet that can be copied/pasted into the official CQ Scoresheet. [DX-NEWS] Sun Shows Signs Of Life: Long-Awaited Solar Cycle 24 Starting To Take Off
ScienceDaily (Nov. 12, 2008) — After two-plus years of few sunspots, even fewer solar flares, and a generally eerie calm, the sun is finally showing signs of life. I think solar minimum is behind us, says sunspot forecaster David Hathaway of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. His statement is prompted by an October flurry of sunspots. Last month we counted five sunspot groups, he says. That may not sound like much, but in a year with record-low numbers of sunspots and long stretches of utter spotlessness, five is significant. This represents a real increase in solar activity. Even more significant is the fact that four of the five sunspot groups belonged to Solar Cycle 24, the long-awaited next installment of the sun's 11-year solar cycle. October was the first time we've seen sunspots from new Solar Cycle 24 outnumbering spots from old Solar Cycle 23. It's a good sign that the new cycle is taking off. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/11/08230341.htm -- Jim Reisert AD1C/Ø, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-NEWS] DX SUMMIT ALERT
From: Martti Laine [EMAIL PROTECTED] DX SUMMIT ALERT The Old OH2AQ DX Summit Goes Offline November 19, 2008 at 1000 UTC The new DX Summit website at http://www.dxsummit.fi/ debuted on May 23, 2008. The site has been redeveloped from the ground up and uses the latest technology available. The new DX Summit has been ramping up steadily and today the number of hits is approaching 1 million a day. In addition to providing the same functionality as the old DX Summit, the new platform offers the necessary flexibility to easily add new features which are currently on the drawing board. The old DX Summit homepage at http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/ redirects users to the new DX Summit website. However, all the old DX Summit data pages are still online but the trend for daily hits has decreased, as we expected. The number still remains high but the time has come to shut down the old DX Summit machine which may cause your software to stop working. To try and maintain compatibility with older software which may no longer be supported, the new DX Summit includes a series of DX spot webpages which are 100% HTML compatible with the same pages on the old DX Summit. Simply changing the URLs in your software according to the information below should keep it working with the new DX Summit. If your software does not allow you to edit the URLs, please contact the author of your software and ask them to change the URLs according to the information below. URLs to change Latest 25 DX spots page Old URL: http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dx25.html New URL: http://www.dxsummit.fi/text/dx25.html Latest 1000 DX spots page Old URL: http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dx1000.html New URL: http://www.dxsummit.fi/text/dx1000.html Latest 1 DX spots page Old URL: http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dx1.html New URL: http://www.dxsummit.fi/text/dx1.html Software authors who wish to implement data exchange with the new DX Summit should visit http://www.dxsummit.fi/technical.aspx for information on data formats and URLs. If your software does not work with the new DX Summit, we encourage you to forward this information to the author of the software you are using. We hope all software relying on the DX Summit can be successfully updated to work with the new DX Summit. We look forward to providing you with this valuable DX resource for many years to come! 73, OH8X Team --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Are the dx-news archives at this web site up-to-date? http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org/ The reason I'm asking is that I don't see any ARRL DX bulletins there since this date: [DX-NEWS] ARLD028 DX news Thu, 03 Jul 2008 13:56:44 -0700 I'm trying to figure out if something is wrong on my end. [DX-NEWS] VK9DWX News #13 - 30.10.2008
News #13 - 30.10.2008 The “VK9DWX-Willis Island DX-pedition 2008” is history. We closed the log with more than 95.000 QSOs (that’s our first merger of all logs except the VK9DWX/mm qsos during the voyage). A great adventure full of unforgettable moments and sweet memories lays behind us. We enjoyed a beautiful time of ham radio operation and are very happy of being able to serve so many hams around the world with a new one or at least with new and additional bandpoints for the DXCC. We enjoyed nice and trusty fellowship within our team. Our two rookies Josh, W4WJF, and Rhy, ZS6DXB turned out to be a real surprise for us: They not only slipped into the team very easily but they also shouldered the operating burden in amazingly good performance, they became a valuable support for the DXpedition. After 10 days of operation we welcome the sailing boat “Rum Runner” which brought us new supplies (food and fuel) as well as the exchange of our rookies: Josh had to leave and Rhy was coming to replace him. Also our DXpedition visitor Gerd, DK2JW, came in as well as Dale, VK4DMC, our valuable, trusty and very important support in Australia. They were very happy to have solid ground under their feet again, because the voyage was somewhat rough and not a real pleasure. We spent a nice evening with exiting talks and a few cool beers. They stayed over night with us on the island. Next morning it was time to say good bye, because the “Rum Runner” went back to Cairns. Operation on this DXpedition was a real challenge to everyone: Fresh to strong winds every day, some days so powerful that the tents were threatened to be blown away or at least heavily damaged. High tide climbed the beaches often higher than expected and swept over the feed points of the arrays, (perfect ground conductivity at least !!) disordering the radial system completely. Turtles are really heavy (some 75 kg!) and snagged the coax or other cable from time to time, but fortunately caused no major trouble with that. Hundreds (or were it thousands ??) of different birds, screaming (and smelling !!) all day and night and whom you might have noticed as the background noise in our SSB-QSOs. Small crabs, flies and moths were perennial companions in our tents, but luckily did not bite at all. Day after day the sun poured down and let the temperature soar to 35 to 40 degrees Celsius in the tents. Unfortunately we could not open tents due to the wind and the brightness of the sunlight: We simply would not have seen anything on the laptop-screens anymore. Fans were only of little help and not a real relief. In spite of these unfavourable conditions, the equipment worked to our satisfaction. No major faults to mention. Only internet access was limited to several hours a day, which made it impossible to update the log in shorter periods. Food was cooked on the MV Floreat daily and supplied to us day by day. A great hug to our chef Susy who did a marvellous job in feeding the team with delicious meals and perfect sandwiches as well as fresh fruit most of the days. MV Floreat’s skipper Marcus Oke inspected the weather forecast very thoroughly, took the development of wind and waves as well as the tide in consideration and came to the conclusion that Sunday would be the best choice for ferrying our material safely from the beach to the ship. Safety of all our members first and the material second was our biggest concern and we would never doubt the decision of our experienced skipper. So - sad to say - but we had to finish the CQWW SSB –Contest already by Sunday morning. We took down all the 4 squares, vertical, and Vertical-Array-Dipoles (VDAs) which served us as trusty companions throughout our DX-pedition and made these many contacts possible. To tear down the whole stuff turned out to be much easier than erecting it. We began very early in the morning - just on sunrise - to get most o the job done before the tropical sun would burn out our brains. It was a perfect manoeuvre, everyone knew what to do. We packed all material in boxes, pelicases and Skipper Marcus took all the stuff safely back to the MV Floreat. We did not miss a single item and nothing got wet at all. So we luckily managed to finish the complete work already by early afternoon. Once we were all back on the ship, the MV Floreat hoisted the anchors and headed east back to Cairns. We waved a last Good Bye to the island each of us with his own personal memories, leaving thousands of boobies, frigatebirds, hermitcrabs and green turtles in their ancestral environment. After Norfolk Island in 2007 as VK9DNX we are very happy having performed a new adventure with VK9DWX now in 2008. We enjoyed it very much and hope that we could meet at least part of your expectations. May be not every one could make it into our log. We are sorry for that and hope that there will be a next chance for you soon. We thank you very much for
[DX-NEWS] VK9DWX News #11 - 16.10.2008
The Willis Islands Group, Mid Isl. Thursday, October, 16th This is the seventh day of operation. We had two days with heavy gusty winds. The long enduring rainfall for more than a day gave us some relief. It was refreshing to have a sweet-water shower from the sky and temperature dropped to 28 degrees C. Today the sun is back again and we are experiencing 39 degrees in the operator tents, with linears running. Our receiving situation on the lowbands is heavily influenced by static noise, which usually comes up to 20-30 db over S9, a real challenge for our operators. We obviously built the 30m 4 square too close to the water, because two Verticals were nearly washed into the sea by the heavy surf. We managed to fix the guy-ropes and pegs again and could keep the antenna into operation. For the same reason, we also moved the 40m 4-square a few meters away from the beach. We also put up a 6m-antenna, but there is no activity at all so far. Today we crossed the line of 40.000 Qs. Stations are pouring in in great numbers still. Unfortunately especially the W-path is interfered and jammed heavily on 160m. but we will do our very best to get as many of you as possible in the log. We also have set up a fifth station and now are able to operate from all five positions at the same time, to cater the needs of all of you even better. Tomorrow, we are expecting the Rum Runner, who will bring us more supplies, out friend Dale, VK4DMC, Bernd (DK2JW; our tourist) and the new rookie Rhy, ZS6DXB. Unfortunately Josh, W4WJF will be leaving with the Rum Runner in the next day, but this also means that Rhy will be joining our effort. Josh says he has loved working you all on the bands and has greatly enjoyed his experiences so far. He came in mainly as a SSB operator but has made quite a few CW contacts with you on-the-air. Even though he said some operators complained of his slow speed, his proficiency has improved so far. He is lucky since he doesn't have to help break down the antennas and the camp AND can go home and put VK9DWX in his log! He thinks the idea of inviting rookies along on DXpeditions is a great idea. In the US, he said many DXers were inspired by this idea and he hopes to give a few presentations about his trip in order to motivate others to sponsor a rookie on their next DXpedition. We are expecting a great weekend and another exciting week full of pile-ups on the Island. We will enjoy to work you in CW, SSB and RTTY on all bands! 73 de the VK9DWX-Team P.S.: Just a few minutes ago the Rum Runner arrived at Willis Island. Around noon we will start to transfer the persons and the ordered supplies. We would be delighted if DX editors would publish this information as widely as possible and DXers bring it to the attention of their clubs and fellow DXers. --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-NEWS] CQ News: Chinese hams secure emergency nets
From the CQ Newsroom... CQ Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, reports that hams in China have secured their earthquake emergency nets on HF, but note that one or more may be restarted if needed as a result of continuing aftershocks. According to the Chinese Radio Sport Association (CRSA) website, personnel and equipment have been removed from the disaster zone, and the frequencies of 7.030, 7.050, 7.060 and 14.270 MHz are no longer in use for emergency communications. However, International Amateur Radio Union Region 3 Disaster Communications Chairman Jim Linton, VK3PC, says the CRSA notes that one or more of those frequencies may be returned to use in the event of further severe aftershocks. CRSA would like to thank all amateurs around the world who helped keep these frequencies clear for emergency communications, and for the concern of amateurs and amateur radio societies worldwide. Please note that 7077, 7085, and 7140 kHz continue to be in use for emergency communications by amateurs in Colombia following last weekend's earthquake there. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] NEW DX SUMMIT HITS THE STREETS ON FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2008 AT 16.00 UTC
[Please don't reply to AD1C] NEW DX SUMMIT HITS THE STREETS ON FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2008 AT 16.00 UTC The original OH2AQ DX Summit was launched in 1998. It represented something that changed the entire DX hunt. Spinning the dial became old history that would never return. Yasme Foundation President Wayne Mills, N7NG put it as follows; Jukka Salomaa, OH2BUA and Antti Kantola, OH5TB were awarded the Yasme Excellence Award for conceiving, operating, and maintaining the DX Summit, the first widely used Web-based spotting network portal. They created a tool that fundamentally changed the nature of HF operating, a true advancement of the radio art. The OH2AQ Summit has been a reliable tool for DX spotting for ten years. It was based on a concept and the computing power of those other days. Today marks the 10th anniversary of this innovation. The New DX Summit, operated by Arcala Extremes, OH8X and supported by Yasme Foundation Inc., boasts a dramatic increase in computing power with the latest available equipment providing easy access to configure a Microsoft Server 2003 platform. State-of-the-art multiple servers are located in California, USA for fast information throughput and massive data storage. A huge amount of data will be retrieved for potential future applications. The system has been developed by Admino Technologies Ltd. located in Oulu, Northern Finland. http://www.adminotech.com Traffic congestion should be a thing of the past. You can sample the speed and functionality during this coming weekend's WPX Contest. You should reconfigure your setup to http://www.dxsummit.fi (please update your browser bookmarks) because the original OH2AQ DX Summit will close down soon. While the new system begins as a stepped-up carbon copy of the original system, it will provide an advanced technical platform for many new features that are on the drawing board as we speak. Arcala Extremes, OH8X is a group of serious hams seeking technical innovations, experimenting with advanced radio and antenna concepts to further the evolution of amateur radio by using the competitive spirit as their trademark to attract young people. Their stations, OH8X and CU2A, are located in Oulu, Northern Finland and Azores Islands respectfully. Yasme Foundation http://www.yasme.org is a non-profit corporation undertaking scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. -- ((( 73 ))) Jarmo OH2BN -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. This moves the #1 Honor Roll position to 338 current entities making entry level Honor Roll 329. We expect direct-mail QSL cards to enter the postal system in late April. At present the On-line QSL Request database holds requests for 53,602 contacts with 7,924 stations. 5. /MM-operations * Some of the team members were active as /mm onboard the Braveheart. Following members were active as /mm: * DL3DXX/mm * DL6FBL/mm * DL8LAS/mm * ES5TV/mm * N5IA/mm * SP3DOI/mm * SV1JG/mm * WA6CDR/mm QSL cards should be obtained from the individual callsign owners. [DX-NEWS] ARRL: 300 Entities Confirmed in LoTW by K4DY
From ARRL LoTW site: Mar 7, 2008: 300 Entities Confirmed in LoTW by K4DY -- Les, K4DY has confirmed 302 entities in Logbook of the World! Congratulations Les. Les says My current total on LoTW is 302 (with deletes)/298 (current countries). I am up to 1,914 Challenge Countries. This was as of 02/19/2008. I am importing the LoTW Report directly into a separate Logbook program. It is Logger 32. This way I can tell at a glance where I stand since only LoTW QSO confirmations are in the log. Les received his Novice ticket in 1957 at the age of 13. He relates my call at the time was KN4SWL. I upgraded to General about 8 months later but the FCC changed my call to K4ZCP (why they didn't give me K4SWL I don't know --I was so happy to have my General I didn't care, hi). I became K4DY in 1976. I started chasing DX as a Novice and have never stopped. I still prefer CW and love low band DXing. I have also got hooked on 6 Meter Dxing. Just wish I had discovered the band sooner, hi. When LoTW was first announced I wasn't the least bit interested in it but then I got to thinking, hey this would be a neat way to start over from scratch and see what I could do using nothing but LoTW confirmations. Here are my totals as of 2/19/2008: 160:88 80: 180 40: 220 30: 219 20: 259 17: 252 15: 238 12: 217 10: 193 6: 48 - 1,914 for the Challenge (302/298 for DXCC) I am also chasing States via LoTW. I have completed 160M WAS and need only 17 more confirmations to have a 5BWAS all via LoTW. The hard part is finding someone in a State like North Dakota that uses LoTW, hi (Thank goodness there is at least one- KD4POJ, hi) My earliest LoTW confirmation goes back to August 14, 1958 when I was K4ZCP. I had only been General Class about a month when I worked KP4AOO. KP4AOO is today Roger, N4ZC who lives only about 35 miles away, hi hi. I have never uploaded my Novice Log-KN4SWL. Someday I may obtain the necessary certificate and upload those 500+ QSOs as well. I doubt if I would get any hits but who knows, hi. Thanks to Les for his comments and for using LoTW! -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. Re: [DX-NEWS] Re: Kosova
From the CQ Newsroom... Kosovo Added to CQ DX Awards Country List Effective 2/17/08 (Hicksville, NY) March 21, 2008 -- Kosovo is being added to the list of countries and territories recognized for CQ DX awards, effective immediately, CQ DX Awards Manager Billy Williams, N4UF, announced today. Verifications for contacts made on or after February 17, 2008 are acceptable for CQ DX Award credit. CQ DX Honor Roll members with 335 or more credits should update by May 31st for highest placement in Honor Roll listings. The new 339 entity maximum will appear on CQ DX Honor Rolls to be prepared in early June. CQ DX Honor Roll listings prepared in early April will be based on a 338 maximum count. All Kosovo contacts will count for field KN on applications for the CQ DX Field Award. Kosovo's status has been the subject of some controversy in the amateur radio community as well as the world community, as the ARRL declared that special operations from there on February 17 will count as Serbia, not Kosovo, in terms of DXCC credit. The United States and many European countries immediately recognized Kosovo's independence. However, Russia and China are opposed to it and Russia has threatened to veto any U.N. action to recognize Kosovo as an independent nation. We are aware that the ARRL has not yet added Kosovo to the DXCC list, explained CQ magazine Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. The League says it is waiting for Kosovo to become a member state of the United Nations or be issued a callsign block by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a U.N. agency. However, because of geopolitical issues far beyond the realm of amateur radio, it is unlikely that the United Nations or the ITU will act on Kosovo in the near future, even though the United States and many other countries have granted it recognition. Because it is CQ's policy to grant credit for contacts with 'new' entities as of the date that their status changes, Moseson continued, we have decided not to wait for U.N. action, but to follow the lead of the United States and other countries that have recognized Kosovo's independence, and to grant credit for contacts made with stations in Kosovo as of its independence day, February 17, 2008. (NOTE: This action does not affect the country list for the CQ WW DX Contest. CQWW rules state that its country list is composed of those entities on the DXCC list and the WAE (Worked All Europe) award list. If the WAE Committee decides to add Kosovo to its list, it will automatically be added to the CQWW list.) -- Jim Reisert AD1C/Ø, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] Clipperton Hot News - 11 March 2008
[I am not affiliated with the DXpedition - don't send me E-mail about it - AD1C] On our 2nd day of operation, qso's now total 30,225. Operations on March 10th continued without any significant interruptions from mother nature (finally!). Good pile-ups were seen on all operating frequencies. Yesterday we focused on European openings per our operating plan where Clipperton is high on the most wanted list. Paths to the USA are open almost all the time on a variety of bands so we really want to focus on Europe and other hard to reach areas when propagation is possible. This is why we landed on the north side of the island in the first place. So we know the USA operators will understand why at certain times we are operating only Europe or outside the USA. When the paths are open to EU, we're hearing all of Europe extremely well, very strong signals. We're finding that our Q rates rise significantly when stations call only once or twice and use complete calls. Signals are so strong, with no qsb or noise on our end, that we can often quickly pick out several complete calls and work more stations. If we all work together, we can get more people in our logs. http://www.clipperton2008.org/dxpedition/TX5C_dxpedition.htm -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] VP6DX News #26- 2008 Mar 10
http://ducie2008.dl1mgb.com/news/index.php News #26- 2008 Mar 10 Highlights: ... Answering questions about QSLs and LOTW credits ... ... missing QSOs ... ... other questions answered ... QSL procedures: All the operators have returned home. Carsten DL6LAU arrived at his house to find several thousand envelopes with QSL cards waiting for him. We are surprised! Apparently we forgot to explain the new on-line QSL system used for VP6DX clearly! * Please do NOT send a paper QSL card! You do NOT need to send a paper QSL card nor a letter in the mail. * Go to the website www.vp6dx.com. Click Online QSL Request on the left side menu. Follow the procedures to submit your claimed QSOs. * After entering your claimed QSOs, you may choose to: o Receive your cards via the bureau at a later date. No financial donation to the VP6DX project is required. You are finished. Please do not send any cards to us. o Receive your QSLs mailed direct to your home (premium on-line QSL request service). To cover the cost of mailing and other expedition expenses, the premium on-line QSL request service is available only to people who make a donation of at least US$5 or 3. If you have already made a donation, that's great: just check the appropriate box on the premium service request page. If you want to make a new donation, or add to your previous donation, that's great too! Check the appropriate box, and the website will take you to the donation section. You may donate on-line (via Paypal/credit card) or by sending a check in the mail; just follow the website instructions. By far, the most popular error in using the Paypal donation procedure is forgetting to enter your callsign. If you use the Paypal system, please remember to enter your callsign so your donation can be matched to your QSL requests. Remember: you do NOT need to send a paper QSL card! In fact, a QSL card just makes everything harder and slower. If you send your QSL request by mail on paper, someone else (a volunteer) must enter the data into the on-line form for you. This means your paper mailing will sit in a queue until a volunteer opens your envelope -- a MUCH slower process. It will be faster if you enter your QSL request on-line! Even if you are making a donation by check via the mail, please do not send a QSL card request with your check. When your donation check has been received and entered into the database, all your on-line QSL requests will be automatically processed. In conclusion: Use the on-line QSL request form... Thank you for your donations (in every form)... and, especially, thank you for NOT sending a paper QSL card! Reminder: PLEASE include your callsign with any PayPal donation! Logbook of the World: Information about QSOs with stations who have already donated to the VP6DX project have been automatically uploaded to the ARRL LOTW server. As of March 7, 17,142 VP6DX QSOs (almost 10% of the total log) have been accepted into the ARRL LOTW server and 3260 QSOs have been matched. Updates to the donor/sponsor list on the website, and LOTW uploads, are done at least once per week. For others who do not wish to donate to the VP6DX project, and who request a QSL via the on-line QSL request website, information about their QSOs will be uploaded to the ARRL LOTW server at a later date, approximately 9-12 months from now. We have received a few email inquiries along the lines of I donated, but my LOTW credits are not appearing. We have to research each inquiry by hand, so please be patient. By far, the most common problem is that the donor did not include his callsign with his donation. Missing QSOs: We have also received some email from people who feel they made a successful contact with VP6DX, but their QSO is not in the on-line log... or a variation of their callsign appears in the on-line log. During the next few weeks the raw log files from each of the logging computers at Ducie Island will be re-integrated together and checked against the on-line log. We know some obvious logging errors occurred, and these will be fixed at that time; for example: * OPONK3NA, a mistake by the operator logging on at the start of his operating shift. * W1FJK1XM, two calls entered as one QSO, which could not be quickly fixed in real-time on the island. Some of your missing QSOs may be recovered during this review of the logs. It is also possible your callsign was recorded incorrectly by the operator at Ducie Island, forming a busted call. You may receive a QSL for a busted call, according to these rules: * You submit an on-line QSL request for the contact; and * The log contains a QSO at the correct time on the correct band/mode, but with a callsign which differs from your callsign by ONE character, or by one transposition; and * The owner of the busted callsign does not submit an on-line QSL request for the contact within the next 6-9 months. Example #1: K5NA submits a QSO request for a

News #23- 2008 Feb 29 Highlights: ... On-air operating phase of expedition ends ... ... Equipment packed and transfered to M/V Braveheart ... ... Everyone transferred from shore to ship ... ... Equipment stowed ... ... M/V Braveheart departs ... Around 4:30am Wednesday (Feb 27 Wed 1230z), a rain shower drenched Ducie Island. On-duty operators scrambled to close up the radio operating tents, which had been left open to enjoy pleasant nighttime breezes. Two hours later, at dawn, Eric and Carsten *the expedition co-leaders) and Nigel (captain of the Braveheart) stood at the top of the shoreline, coffee cups in hand, discussing the recent rain. Bands of rain showers had been seen the previous sunset, and more were evident in this morning's eastern sky. The discussion was short, for each man had already privately concluded the on-the-air phase of the Ducie Island expedition should end immediately. The generators were switched off, and the roar of the surf against the shoals of low tide became the predominant sound. The decision scuttled plans for a second night of limited on-air operations by a skeleton team of 3-4 operators, focused on the 160m-30m low bands. Instead, after a quick, light breakfast, teams focused on packing all equipment and exiting the island promptly, before the weather and sea conditions deteriorated further. The men returned to their sleeping tents to pack personal gear into watertight cannisters for transfer back to the ship. Bedding was folded up. The tents were left standing for the moment: they were soaked from the early morning downpour, and if some sunshine developed, they might have a chance to dry before packing. Thereafter small groups of radio operators fanned out along the northeastern coast to take down all remaining antennas at the east camp and pack them in their shipping tubes. Three men spooled thousands of meters of coaxial transmission cable and antenna control lines back onto their shipping reels, wrapping each completed spool in protective film. Two disconnected the electrical power distribution system, coiling up thick cables and packing distribution boxes, outlet strips, and lighting. Another packed computers, radios, antenna control boxes, footswitches, filters, DC power systems, and other miscellaneous radio apparatus into pre-assigned watertight shipping cases. When each tube and watertight shipping container received the last of its items, it was closed, sealed, and tagged. The annotation scribbled on the florescent green tape stated the container was ready to leave the island, indicated whether it could be stored outside on the ship, and whether access during the return voyage was required. The containers were placed by the path to the beach, and Braveheart crew loaded tagged materials onto a hand trolley for transfer to the beachhead. Others of the Braveheart crew disassembled and packed the camp infrastructure: food storage and preparation areas, eating tables and benches, washing stations, protective tarps, the beloved fresh water shower by the lagoon shoreline, and the Toilet With The Outstanding Scenic View. Fortunately, the remainder of the morning was sunny and pleasant. Tents dried out by late morning. The Braveheart team emptied them of bedding and cots, swept out the accumulated bits of trash and dirt, and then sealed each tent after spraying the interior with an insecticide. An hour or two later the tents were struck and packed in fadges (large sacks), to be stowed outside on the Braveheart. New Zealand environmental regulations require precautions to reduce the chances of importing insects. Later, when Braveheart is in French Polynesia, the tents and tarps will come out of the fadges to be washed down, scrubbed, rinsed, dried, and repacked. With the arrival of high tide, a jet boat from the Braveheart came to the eastern shore's landing point to start the long process of transferring equipment from shore to ship. Sea conditions and the on-shore breeze combined to make this task a tricky one. The Braveheart, pitching and rolling at anchor, lifted items off the transfer boat with a crane onto its rear deck. Careful timing was required to get materials hooked onto the crane, whose heavy hook and block swang around the bobbing jet-boat. By 11:00 AM the radio teams had walked over to dismantle the west camp. The cable team extracted out of the low forest and underbrush the kilometers of wiring used for low band receiving antennas, packed the remotely controlled receive antenna switching hub, and reeled up several thousand meters more of coaxial and control cables. More watertight cases filled up with equipment... and everything rolled down to the lagoon shoreline on the hand dollies over the rough coral paths. At mid-afternoon, the jet boat traveled around to and surfed across the shallow southern lagoon entrance. West camp materials were shuttled to the lagoon side of the east camp, then rolled or carried over the atoll to the seaside

[DX-NEWS] VP6DX - News #22- 2008 Feb 26
News #22- 2008 Feb 26 Highlights: ... First LOTW credits for VP6DX contacts on ARRL server ... ... Station and camp disassembly begins ... ... One more record claimed ... Late yesterday, Feb 21, the Ducie Island expedition submitted over data for over seven thousand VP6DX contacts to the ARRL robot. These contacts were with over 900 stations whose owners made financial contributions of at least five US dollars to the expedition through Feb 24. The submission has been accepted and processed by the robot, and these contacts are ready for matching by the donors. Meanwhile, on Ducie Island, the operator team and crew of the Braveheart have begun the first phase of disassembly and off-loading. On today's schedule to be disassembled and removed from the island: * All antennas for 20 through 6 meters at both east and west camps. * The 30m antenna at the west camp, and the 40m 4-square at the east camp. * Two operating positions and the shift supervisor workstation at the east camp. * The technical workstation. * A portion of the camp infrastructure for meals, cooking, washing, etc. No on-air operating will occur during the daylight period today, as all hands are needed to complete the work of disassemble, packing, transfer to the ship, and storage for the sea journey. Tonight (beginning as early as Feb 27 Wednesday 0300z) a more limited on-air operation is possible, if the operators have time and energy remaining. Five operating positions at two sites and transmit antennas for 160 through 30 meter bands will be available. At Feb 27 Wednesday 1445z on-air operations will again shut down for a second day of deconstruction. At the end of Thursday local time the entire east camp will have been removed from the island. The west camp, with single element verticals for 160, 80/30 and 40m, and possible one beverage (045) will remain, along with three operating positions. This equipment will be staffed by a skeleton overnight crew, on-air from about Feb 28 Thursday 0330-1430z. Most operators will sleep on the Braveheart, as there will be no camp facilities on the island. Early Thursday morning (Ducie Island time), around 1400z, the ship's crew and operators will return to the island to pack and remove all remaining antennas, equipment, etc. The on-air phase of the Ducie Island expedition will end at that point. This will be the last press release from Ducie Island. A log update was submitted to the website about one hour ago. A final log update, together with a press release containing final statistics, will be transmitted from the Braveheart once we have departed. We would be delighted if DX editors would publish this information as widely as possible and DXers bring it to the attention of their clubs and fellow DXers. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. Original Message Subject: [EMAIL PROTECTED] VP6DX News #21- 2008 Feb 25 Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2008 09:42:19 +0100 From: Christian Janssen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Highlights: ... Fireworks at Ducie Island ... ... VP6DX breaks record for largest number of contacts on an expedition ... ... Other band and mode contact records also broken ... ... Pileups remain large ... ... Long path contacts made on 160m band with Ducie Island ... ... Description of stations ... ... New Pictures online ... On 2008 February 25 Monday at 0437z, after 13 days 7 hours and 37 minutes of continuous operation, RA0ALM contacted the Ducie Island expedition on the 10 MHz band for the expedition's 168,723rd contact. According to documents maintained by Jari Jussila OH2BU, this contact breaks the record for the largest number of contacts made by any radio expedition. The record was previously held by the Five Star DX Association's expedition to the Comoros Island (D68C) during 2001 Feb 8-28. A few moments later, the pre-moonrise starry skies above Ducie Island sparkled with a barrage of flares launched from the deck of the M/V Braveheart in celebration. The thirteen operators and six Braveheart crew congratulated each other with handshakes, hugs, and some strong coffee. But deep pileups of European and North American stations were still calling. Soon the seven on-duty operators were back in front of the radios, while the others crept off to their cots to catch up on sleep in the cool of the evening. The Ducie Island expedition has broken other expedition records in recent days, including: * largest number of RTTY contacts, previously held by the Swains Island N8S expedition of 2007 April. * largest number of SSB (voice) contacts, previously held by the Comoros Island D68C expedition. * largest number of contacts on the 40m band, previously held by the Libya 5A7A expedition of 2006 November. * largest number of contacts on the 30m band, previously held by the St Brandon Island 3B7C expedition of 2007 September. * largest number of contacts on the 17m band, previously held by the Swains Island N8S expedition. * largest number of contacts with North America, previously held by the Comoros Island D68C expedition. * largest number of contacts with South America, previously held by the Peter the First Island 3Y0X expedition of 2006 February. * largest number of contacts with Africa, previously held by the Rodrigues Island 3B9C expedition of 2004 March-April. As this message was transmitted by Iridium satellite from Ducie Island, the expedition contact total crossed 170,000 contacts... and continues to increase at about 415 contacts per hour. Most contacts now entering the logs are with European stations during their morning twilight period. In an hour or so the focus will shift to North and South America, east Asia and the Pacific, where it will remain until dawn at Ducie Island. Long path contacts on 160m with Ducie Island Earlier, we reported that a contact on the 160m band had been made with A45XR in Oman, at the opposite side of the planet from Ducie Island. This contact occurred on Feb 18 near Ducie Island sunrise. All of the stations contacted in Europe were in their late afternoon, with the sunset terminator approaching. On Feb 21 a series of long path 160m contacts were made between Ducie Island and stations in Ukraine and southern European Russia. Eleven stations were worked during 1345-1430z. Signals were best on the 225 (Ukraine) or 195 degree (Russia) beverages and inaudible in other directions, confirming a long path route with very little or no skew. Contacts with southern European Russia used a path from Ducie Island south-southwest over Antarctica, then north across the southern Indian Ocean (Heard Island, Mauritius), across the Persian Gulf and Iran into Russia. These paths are 23000 to 24000 km long. For the Ukraine, signals followed a south Pacific Ocean path into the Southern Ocean below New Zealand and Australia, then near the Maldives, the Persian Gulf, and finally towards the Ukraine. During the same time period, a station in the Moscow City oblast was also contacted. This signal clearly arrived on the short path, crossing over Scandinavia Signals were loud on 015 degree beverage antenna and was barely audible on the 195 antenna. Scandinavia and northwest Russia stations looking for a 160m contact with Ducie Island should check this time for a short path opening. Stations in Ukraine and southwest Russia should look for the long path. During the hours leading up to and including this long/short path opening to Europe, Oman, Mongolia, and Tajik stations were also contacted on their short path directions. Of course, we looked for the same opening the following morning, but without success. The 160m operator team will keep checking

Original Message Subject: [EMAIL PROTECTED] VP6DX News #20- 2008 Feb 24 Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2008 23:39:34 +0100 From: Christian Janssen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Highlights: ... Final days of expeditions ... ... Outline of teardown and departure schedule ... The Ducie Island expedition has entered its final days of on-air operations. DXers seeking contacts on 20 through 6m should focus their attentions on their most important goals between now and Feb 26 Tuesday 1430z. Low band contacts will be available in limited number until Feb 29 Thursday 1430z. All plans are subject to revision if weather and sea conditions change. At present, the weather is fine (partly cloudy, hot at midday) and sea conditions are reasonable. Any degradation in either may result in earlier reductions of on-air operations or an earlier departure. Assuming the weather and sea conditions continue to cooperate, VP6DX will continue on-air at full staffing levels until Feb 26 Tuesday 1430z, shortly after local sunrise. The team will spend the day disassembling some antennas (primarily 20-10m), one radio station, and some related infrastructure. This material will be packed and transfered to the M/V Braveheart. On Tuesday night, it will be stowed securely for the sea transit. Around sunset that day, VP6DX will return on-air for limited nighttime operations. The start time depends on how well the day's work progressed... and the number of stations on-air will depend on conditions and operator enthusiasm after a long day of hard work. As many as six stations could be on-air on 160-30m during this night (Feb 27 Wednesday 0300-1430z). On Feb 27 Wednesday on-air operations will again stop. The team will again spend the daylight period disassembling the next portion of the station. At the end of Wednesday our entire camp will be packed and off the island. Most operators will spend the night on the M/V Braveheart, helping to secure materials on the ship for the sea transit. We plan to leave only a skeleton crew (3-4 persons) for nighttime operations. That night (Feb 28 Thursday 0300-1430z) as many as three stations could be on-air on 160m-30m. One beverage may remain for this final night. Just before dawn on Feb 28 Thursday the team will come ashore for final disassembly and packing. The last operating site will be packed, the remaining four antennas taken down, and a final check of the island for trash, etc made. We intend to have all material stowed on the ship by Feb 28 Thu 2000z, to weigh anchor, and depart Ducie. We would be delighted if DX editors would publish this information as widely as possible and DXers bring it to the attention of their clubs and fellow DXers. -- Jim Reisert AD1C/Ø, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] VP6DX News #19- 2008 Feb 19
News #19- 2008 Feb 19 Highlights: ... 160m contact made with opposite side of the planet ... ... 104,900 contacts and climbing ... ... QSO Statistics ... ... 17m RTTY operations started ... ... 30m RTTY frequency adjustment ... ... 6m beacon now on the air ... ... long path contacts made with Finland, European Russia on the 80m band... ... possibilities for 160m? ... ... North American 160m schedule ... 160m contact made with opposite side of the planet At Feb 18 Mon 1252z, the Ducie Island 160m operator was called by, and completed a contact with, A45XR in Oman. A45XR is located less than 300 km from the antipode (exact opposite location on the planet) of Ducie Island -- essentially the most distant location from Ducie Island. This contact took place during the late afternoon, Oman time, 1 hour 10 minutes before sunset. At the time of the contact, the terminator was 2000 km from Oman, approaching from the east-northeast. All directions between antipodes are of equal distance. Over what path was this contact made? At Ducie Island, A45XR's signals were heard best on the 305° beverage antenna. This suggests the signal path traveled over Japan, northern China, and Pakistan... exiting perpendicular from the twilight zone. It is possible a single E-skip hop between Oman and northeast Pakistan completed the path through the 2000 km daylight sector. Congratulations to both operators! Now that we have shown Ducie Island's topband operating team can contact even the farthest points on the planet, what's stopping you from trying a top band contact with VP6DX? If you think your antenna is inferior, or you are running limited transmitter power, don't give up! Look at the comments in the guestbook section of the VP6DX.com website: lots of stations are now in the VP6DX logbook with very simple antennas and low heights -- event on top band. So give every band and mode a try. We are waiting for your call! We are stuck on an uninhabited island with nothing to do but work any station who calls us. Well, perhaps that's not entirely true. It's almost time for breakfast... and a nap for the nighttime operators. 104,900 contacts so far Current dupe rate is below 7%, which is typical for this volume of QSOs. During the next days we plan a greater focus on Asia openings, which are presently underrepresented on most bands. Openings on 12 and 10m to Europe can be weak and difficult, but we will try to capture all of them in the remaining days on the air. 30m has received somewhat less attention to date due to competition from other band openings into difficult-to-reach areas. On Feb 19 Tue we added a second 30m antenna and started running CW and RTTY simultaneously. 17m RTTY operations started RTTY totals to date also are below plan. To help correct this, and to exploit a more convenient propagation time for North American operators, on Feb 19 Mon we began RTTY operations on 17m during mid-day (local Ducie time). Our RTTY transmit frequency on this band will be about 18101 kHz (below the packet stations), listening down. 30m RTTY frequency adjustment We have received reports that our 30m RTTY transmit frequency of 10149 is sometimes covered by commercial stations in Europe. We may move this frequency back to 10139... but listen up in the JA RTTY window of 10140-10150. Note that some form of radar or other broadband signal from northern Asia occasionally covers most of the 30m band. During these times we redeploy the operating position to another band. This interference may cause us to miss some openings. 6m beacon now on the air At about 2008 Feb 19 Tue z the VP6DX 6m beacon began operations. The beacon frequency is 50105.5 kHz. Beacon power is 70 watts to a Yagi. We will try beaming east-northeast for two hours around our sunrise... north-northeast to USA/Canada/Central America for the remainder of the day. The beacon speaker is on our picnic table, used for meals and relaxing, and next to the east operating tent. In addition we have a spectrum display monitoring a portion of the 6m beacon band. Please submit any reception reports via the VP6DX.COM website (they will be forwarded to the operator team). You may call us on the beacon frequency, or contact any of our HF operators to alert us for an opening. 80m longpath to OH and European Russia During a window around Ducie Island local sunrise (1345-1445Z), long path contacts have been made on both 75m SSB and 80m CW with stations in Finland and European Russia. The furthest contact was to northern Finland, about 25,000 km from Ducie Island and 5,000 km beyond the antipodes. The best reception at Ducie Island for most contacts is on the 195° beverage. Some stations were heard equally well on the 225° beverage. The stations were inaudible on any other direction. This suggests the path has very little skew off the great circle long path route. This long path route parallels the terminator (bearing 187° from Ducie), with signals from Ducie traveling over

[DX-NEWS] VP6DX (Ducie) in ARRL DX CW
http://ducie2008.dl1mgb.com/news/index.php News #16- 2008 Feb 15 Directly from Ducie Island: ARRL DX CW contest starts soon. VP6DX will participate in a limited fashion: * On the CW contest bands 160, 80, 40, 20 15 and 10, we probably will not be at the normal frequencies. Operators will pick a frequency based on band conditions. Each operator will make his own decisions about split vs simplex operation, depending on the situation at the time. * We will answer ALL callers (USA/VE and others), and send our contest exchange and log the exchanges received from contest participants. * We won't be chasing multipliers and will not be able to handle pass requests. If another band is open at all, we should have a signal there. Quick QSYs to check non-open bands are time-consuming (manual filter and antenna changes) and not a good use of our time on the island. Meanwhile, other radios will be on non-contest bands and band segments; e.g., 20m SSB or 30m RTTY. These non-contest segment operations will continue as they have the last few days: split operations, with priority to difficult propagation paths. We anticipate no 20m RTTY or 40m SSB during the contest. The contest ends at Feb 17/2359z and it will be late afternoon (4pm) here. 40m will be just opening to Europe, and the low bands will open during the next three hours. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] VP6DX News #14- 2008 Feb 13
http://ducie2008.dl1mgb.com/news/index.php News #14- 2008 Feb 13 I just had a telephone call with Carsten (DL6LAU) on Ducie Island. The reason we did not get any update or online log from the island is that they had no time until now because of a big workload to setup the stations and antennas. They plan to go online in the next 6-12 hours so we expect the first online logs around noon on Thursday. Please be aware that the data connection via Iridium is very sensible so it can last a long time to upload the online logs. After 1,5 days of operation they have now about 28,000 QSOs in the log (about 17,000 after the first 24 hours!). They already started RTTY operation on 20m with over 700 QSOs at the moment. In some days we expect also RTTY operation on 30m. Antenna construction is still in progress. Some antennas for 12m and 10m are missing. Today they are at the installation of the Beverage antennas for the low bands. All team members are in a good shape (except some sunburns) and they have a lot of fun. A problem is the extreme heat during the day which makes it nearly impossible for the night operators to sleep. Tomorrow we will get some more news from the island. Please stay tuned. [DX-NEWS] Vietnamese hold rare rally over islands
Sun Dec 9, 2:36 AM ET HANOI, Vietnam - Several hundred Vietnamese staged a rare public demonstration Sunday to protest China's effort to claim control of two disputed island chains in the South China Sea. The demonstrators, mostly university students, gathered near the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi and chanted Down with China! and Long Live Vietnam! Police let the demonstration continue for about an hour before breaking it up. The protesters were supporting the government's position that Vietnam has sovereignty over the Spratly and Paracel islands, a contentious issue between Vietnam and China for years. The largely uninhabited islands and surrounding waters are believed to have large oil and natural gas reserves. They straddle busy sea lanes and are rich fishing grounds. Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei also claim sovereignty over all or some of the Spratlys. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071209/ap_on_re_as/vietnam_china_protest -- Jim Reisert AD1C/Ø, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] SM5DQC - Silent Key
Very sorry to read this new in The Daily DX today. My prayers go out to Osten's family. *** The Daily DX (c) *** Volume 11 Number 174 September 10, 2007 Editor/Publisher Bernie McClenny, W3UR Edited today by Rich Boyd, KE3Q SM5DQC, Osten Magnusson, has become a Silent Key at the age of 67. He passed away Friday at his home. Osten was a longtime subscriber to the Daily DX, a major source of DX news for us, a great history reference and a good friend to many, including to W3UR. The ARRL's DXCC Manager, NC1L, Bill, says Osten joined DXCC in 1967 and has been very active ever since. Osten was appointed a DXCC card checker in November, 2000 and has been, says NC1L, one of the more active European checkers. Osten was #1 Honor Roll for both Mixed and Phone, CW Honor Roll, and needed just one, P5. He had DXCC on all bands 160- 10M and 5BDXCC. NC1L says, When an issue stumped the DXCC guy, Osten always came to the rescue! SM5DJZ, John, will carry on with the DXCC program for Swedish hams. The two had divided this task. But, John notes that Osten was QSL manager for some 9Q stations - he doesn't know who will pick up that task. -- Jim Reisert AD1C/0, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] Some important messages from the 3B7C team (10-Sep-2007 @ 19:00 UTC)
http://www.3b7c.com/news.htm 10-Sep-2007 @ 19:00 UTC Some important messages from the team: 1. North America west coast: Long path openings occur 02-04z on both 30m 20m... and 12-14z on 40m through 20m (even longer on 20m, up to 16z). Signals are good here but few people are calling us. We will continue looking for west coast long path at these times. A brief skew path 80m opening around 13z occurs, and we will be looking for 160m openings as well at this time to west coast. Please report any other long path or unusual openings to the Americas. 2. Pirates: At least two pirates were operating this past weekend on 40m. Now that logs have been uploaded, DXers are encouraged to verify contacts especially on this band. 3. Generator shutdown will be shifted to 04z in future days, typically 1 hour. A longer shutdown for oil change is required on Wednesday and every fourth day thereafter. Shutdown will be after the last North America low band QSOs. 4. Relatively poor propagation has heavily favoured Europe over Japan... and North America has been even more of a struggle. DXers in Europe may be asked to QRX while we try to work the weak, short openings to North America and Japan. Thanks for everyone's patience. Let's hope conditions will improve. 5. 160m CW will shift to 1821.2 to avoid a carrier bothering Europe. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. By AUDREY McAVOY, Associated Press Writer Sat Jul 21, 1:30 PM ET MIDWAY ATOLL - The long stretch of atolls and coral reefs northwest of the main Hawaiian islands is so precious humans generally aren't allowed to venture there. Boats need special permits to enter. All fishing must stop in 2011, aside from what Native Hawaiians catch for cultural purposes. President Bush made the region the largest protected marine area in the world when he declared the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a marine national monument last year. But there is one spot in the 1,400-mile archipelago where officials believe human visitors, in limited numbers, could do more good than harm: Midway Atoll. In about six months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to allow tourists to visit Midway, primarily to help clear the island of debris and invasive species. Wildlife officials also hope visitors will leave having become strong advocates for the continued preservation of the monument. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070721/ap_on_re_us/midway_tourism_1 -- Jim Reisert AD1C, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] Russian Scientists Say the Arctic Is Theirs
Follow-ups to [EMAIL PROTECTED] please! June 28, 2007, 10:42 am Russian Scientists Say the Arctic Is Theirs By Mike Nizza Toss another stick or two on to that smoldering Cold War fire: Theres renewed talk of expanding the Russian Empire. This time, its not President Vladimir V. Putin spawning the headlines, but a group of geologists. After a 45-day expedition, the scientists say they have discovered new evidence that would bolster a Russian claim to a vast part of the Arctic region beyond the 230-mile maritime economic zone belonging to Russia and the four other nations bordering the Arctic Ocean: Canada, Denmark (through its posession of Greenland), Norway and the United States. One Russian paper celebrated the discovery by publishing a large map of the Arctic under the Russian flag, the Guardian reported. By identifying a geological link between the continental shelf abutting Russias Far North and the North pole by way of a sea-floor feature called the Lomonosov Ridge, Russia could reportedly press a claim to roughly 460,000 square miles of ocean as its territorial waters an area whose size approaches the Mexican Cession (529,189 square miles), which added Texas, California and states in between to the United States. (Still short of the Louisiana Purchases 828,000, though.) And Russia wouldnt be paying a ruble for it, either. http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/06/28/whats-the-russian-for-santas-workshop/ -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] ARLX002 Canada Ending 136 kHz and 5 MHz Special Authorizations
ZCZC AX02 QST de W1AW Special Bulletin 2 ARLX002 From ARRL Headquarters Newington CT May 30, 2007 To all radio amateurs SB SPCL ARL ARLX002 ARLX002 Canada Ending 136 kHz and 5 MHz Special Authorizations In accordance with an agreement between Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) and Industry Canada, that country's telecommunications regulatory agency, special authorizations allowing some Canadian radio amateurs to conduct experiments at 136 kHz and 5 MHz will terminate June 30. These experiments have had, as one objective, the provision of data that would support the objectives of RAC and the IARU for possible new allocations to the Amateur Service at these frequencies, the RAC said. Future special authorizations will depend on the outcomes of World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 (WRC-07), which gets under way October 22, the RAC added. New worldwide, secondary amateur allocations at 135.7 to 137.8 kHz and in the 5 MHz range are up for possible consideration at WRC-07. RAC Newfoundland-Labrador Section Manager Joe Craig, VO1NA, described some of his LF experiences in The Transatlantic on 2200 Meters, that appeared in July 2005 issue of QST. Craig also has been in the forefront of 60 meter experimentation in Canada through the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland. In 2003, club station VO1MRC worked N1RL in Massachusetts for the first Canada-US two-way amateur contact on 60 meters. [DX-NEWS] Re: 3D2AP - was it used from Rotuma once?
I heard back from Warwick, VK4AP: Re Rotuma, no, I have never been there. I was resident in Fiji in 1990/91, (not a dxpedition), and filled in for some months as net controller of the Pacific Inter-Island net on 14315. So it sounds like 3D2AP was definitely a typo for 3D2AG. Case closed! I should have done some more research first (old spots files). I think it was a typo/busted call for 3D2AG who used to be active from Rotuma. [DX-NEWS] N8S logs updated
The N8S on-line logs were updated recently. They look fairly complete (my 17m RTTY QSO from 1939z on 7 April is in there). http://www.yt1ad.info/n8s/log.html As of 1630z on 8 April the web site seems to be temporarily unreachable. Here is what Chris DL5NAM wrote on the http://logsearch.de web page: I receive 2. batch log data : * QSO count: 47.952 Please don't ask me or Pilot station about missing QSO's. We provide only a free service I would like to clarify my position. I am not opposed to on-line logs. What does bother me is people using inappropriate methods to ask about them. We, the subscribers, can't help. If you have a question about the logs, ask one of the (extended) team members, not the reflector. If you have NEWS about the logs, then post the news here. In my opinion, if it's a choice between a DXpeditioner making more QSOs or fiddling with on-line logs, I'll take the additional QSOs every time. [DX-NEWS] Calm before the (solar) storm
March 10, 2006: It's official: Solar minimum has arrived. Sunspots have all but vanished. Solar flares are nonexistent. The sun is utterly quiet. Like the quiet before a storm. This week researchers announced that a storm is coming--the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one, she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/10mar_stormwarning.htm -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association.
