[Dx4win] USB Radio control?

2006-08-24 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
Good Evening,
I was looking at USB to TTL communications cable. I know they also have USB to
Serial devices. Has any one tried to setup the radio for USB? Can it be setup
for USB? I know there are no choices or USB in the preferences.

Bill,

Typically, when you use a USB to serial interface, the software sets up a
virtual com port. You then set your software to use that virtual port - not
USB.

[Dx4win] Sorting Logbook

2005-01-23 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
I am now running 6.04 and did some work on my log. I am seeing the sort by date

shows some QSOs not in the right date order.

Why is that??

Pete,

There is still a spot for 10x numbers, but the location changed several
years ago. It's now near the bottom of the QSO window in the Custom Award
field.

If you can't see the Custom Award field, press the F5 key repeatedly
while in the QSO screen -- each successive keypress will expand the screen.

To enter a TenTen (the name of the award in the drop-down menu) number,
the QSO Band field must be set for 10 meters (or 28 MHz).

Guy,

I am sorry, but I must disagree with your suggestion that the solution to
the parallel port driver problem is that new computer owners must dismantle
their Dells and Gateways and Compaqs, replacing their new motherboards and
USB ports with 10 year old ISA technology and hard-coded LPT ports.

Do not try and disguise this software problem with a cheap hardware fix' -
that is just asking for trouble. You're swimming upstream against the
strategic product directions of Intel, Microsoft, and the BIOS vendors. The
correct solution to the parallel port problem is that software developers
(we're talking about DX4WIN, ARSWin, TopTen Devices, WaveNode technologies
here...) must revamp their programs to become compliant with the new
hardware and operating system architectures. This means that they must use
new compilers, new I/O utilities, and deliver new releases of their
programs.

Unless/until that happens, the customers of these vendors are the ones who
will suffer, because they are purchasing products that cannot possibly work
on the latest hardware and software platforms.

Unless, of course, you intend to make the ridiculous suggestion that hams
should purchase the latest and greatest ham radio technology with the
understanding that it will only work properly on 10-year-old hardware and
5-year-old operating systems. ;-)

... I didn't think so!

[DISCLAIMER - keep in mind that I am talking specifically about those
characteristics of DX4WIN, and other programs, that would require multiple
parallel ports to control things like CW keying, antenna rotors, band
decoders, remote antenna switches, remote sensors and wattmeters, etc. If
you don't have those requirements, these issues do not apply]

 All:

I continue to have telnet connection problems with DX4WIN. For some
reason, the connection (to DX4WIN) goes to sleep after anywhere from 20
minutes to 2-1/2 hours. I have tried keeping my connection alive by
utilizing other program pinging techniques, but that has not resolved the
issue (if I constantly do a sh/dx or other command the DX4WIN spotting
connection does not fault).

I note that the Beta Logger 32 by K4CY has a keep alive feature built into
the telnet spotting feature. I can stay connected forever using this
program -- even without user intervention, so I know it is not my internet
connection that fails.

Am I missing anything in DX4WIN that can mitigate my problem?

If that is working, create an entry in DX4Win for my node and then try to

 Hello All,

Installed 6.01 on a computer with XP operating system.

 Few of observations.

I like the Alt+S save feature in Version 5.03, and I believe that it
should
be available in version 6.01, but when I enter a contact in 6.01, and then
use the Alt+S keystrokes, DX4WIN closes. The whole program closes, not
just
my log file. I loaded version 6.01 onto a computer running Windows ME, and
I can use the Alt+S feature just fine. Anyone else running 6.01 on XP and
 having the same problem?

Also, I have set the map options to Show Spot Country, but I'm not
seeing
the spot countries prefix or the country being highlighted on the map as
spots roll by on the cluster. Again, just me, or is there a problem?

Lastly, and I noticed this on both ME and XP, when I merged my .cty files,
there were quite a few contacts that had to be cleaned up to get my
country
counts correct to what I had in version 5.03. FO prefixes, 3X0C/LU, VK9's,
some of my K5K contacts, some of my K1B contacts, some FR stuff, VP6DI
contacts, etc., had to be cleaned up. Might not be a bad idea to check up
on contacts with multi country prefixes.

[Dx4win] Printing on the back of cards

2003-01-11 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
Good Morning Everyone,
I have gotten a few emails on how I get my QSLs to print on the back of my
QSL cards and what kind of printer do I use, and a host of other questions.
Hopefully I will answer all of you questions. Just as an update, there is a
few of us in the area that are doing the same thing.
To keep it simple, I hopehere we go:
First I went to the printing properties of my printer. I created a paper
size of 3.25x5.29 and call it QSL Cards. This will define my QSL Card
Stock. Our local club gets cards printed up (Basically a standard QSL
Card). The last time, I had 10,000 cards printed up. Hopefully we do not
move too soon :-)
I then select this paper type in the printer as my current default. The main
reason I do this is to make sure that it is what I want for printing. For
FYI... I prefer a inexpensive laser printer for my printing. I use a Okidata
Okipage 8w. I just can not see paying the $$ for ink cartridges. I think my
last two laser cartridges were about $18 ea (not too bad).
Then select the custom card setting in DX4WIN. I modify the Custom 1 for my
QSL Card. I set it the same 3.25x5.29 and then I set the pitch to be 3x5
(this is just to keep a border on it). Then I select print cards.

There is a lot of guys who have Epson and HP printers and love this method.
I believe some of them use the tray to feed them. I use the manual feed.
Once I start, all I do is feed it the next card and keep on trucking. I can
print a lot of QSO at once. Typically what I do is wait till after a contest
season and print all of the QSOs for the season on one card. If I work a
station on 5 bands for two contests and say 3 bands on two other contests,
ALL of the QSOs will fit one card.

This took a bit of setting up, but this should make it real easy for most
everyone to get it up and rolling. Please let me know if this helps. I will
try to answer any questions I can. it may be tough to answer specific
questions, but I what the heck..

I see people asking about printing QSLs on the back of Cards. DX4Win does
just fine!! I have done a couple of thousand QSOs this way. It will even
print multiple QSOs on one card. The only down fall that I see is, it
will
not allow me to print replies and new QSOs on the same card. But works for
 me..

[Dx4win] DX4WIN - Yaesu 1000D connection

2003-01-07 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
The Las Vegas View as Yaesu calls it allows you to see the ROM version.
Hold the 1.5 7 MHz button and power up the radio and let go of the
buttons. The radio will go through the routine and display Yaesu 6.00 (my
current version).

My Rig interface is powered from the serial port. Radio type is Yaesu
FT1000, Baud Rate is 4800, check Default, It does mention that you need
EPROM version 6.0 or later, and RTS High is checked (this is my setup, but
it gives you an idea)

 Two questions

 1. I am trying to connect my PC with DX4WIN to my FT1000D and can not get
the radio connection to work. I keep getting timeouts. Perhaps the radio
has an older eeprom. How do I check out the eeprom version. And what
is
 the trick for connection?

Second question. I also made up a serial CW cable and can not get that to
 work either./

 Steve:

My favorite dxtelnet site, when loaded with many users, appears to get
overloaded with outgoing packets and starts dropping users. It is annoying
because I can be working on something else in the room and assuming that the
DX3WIN talker is giving me anything new that I need and there isn't
anything, but what I discover is that I was disconnected 30 minutes ago.

I have looked and don't think that this capability is in the manual, but I
wanted to ask...

Is there a way that I can have DX4WIN ping the site every x number of
minutes and if it is not connected to run a new connect script
automatically? IF that is not in there, any chances/plans to put it in the
next release??

[Dx4win] Frequency entry in DX4WIN

2002-12-08 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
OK maybe I am missing something still (more than likely) I have a Yaesu

something else that I need to do? I do not see any settings in the

You only put the $$ in the program one time and then it automatically
records the exact frequency of each qso after that.

[Dx4win] Frequency entry in DX4WIN

2002-12-08 Thread William Liporace - NA2NA
Sorry folks.. I thought it was sent to all...here were the two better
responses

Add the $$ to the pulldown box that opens when you click on QSO and then
Contest Mode where it says Text to add to QSO note

Click on QSO and click on Contest Mode and then enter $$ in the window that
pops up. That will take care of the problem. Works great with my FT-1000MP
and shows both xmit and receive freq.

[Dx4win] CW keyboard question

I have seen a lot of messages, but yes DX4WIN does support serial
keying

File | Preferences
Radio Tab, CW Keyer and chose either DTR or RTS on radio port. This depends
on the radio interface that you use and what pins are being used on the
interface (look at the schematics)

After using DX4WIN for almost 10 years, I just got the urge to try the
CW keyboard for the first time. To my chagrin, I find there is no choice
of serial ports - it only uses the same COM port as the radio. This is the
case in my version 4.07. Do the newer versions of DX4WIN support
COM port selection for CW keying?

I have a high speed cable connection that works great for the Internet. No

When connecting to a DX cluster via TELNET (with DX4WIN) and the activity
is
somewhat slow, I seem to get disconnected. During peak times such as
contests I stay connected just fine. I understand there is a so called
keep
alive option either in DX4WIN or some other outside source. The idea is
to
keep the traffic moving. If windows isn't seeing any traffic from you,
(some
ISP's as well.) disconnect you so others can use the IP you were on. Is
there a setting in DX4WIN using the TCP/IP setting with this so called
keep
alive feature? Please advise. TNX, 73 STU

Are you guys on nodes with very little traffic?

I can connect to W1GQ, KE9KD and K8SMC (also N2TX before it moved) for
days at
a time, and I'm not actively pinging the connection. In fact, I have two
computers connected to two different nodes while I'm at work all day (one

goes down, or something happens to my router or cable modem. Using ATT
 Broadband Internet.

I don't filter out much besides the stuff above 2 meters. I like to see
