Re: [Dxbase] internet spots issues

2020-07-14 Thread Fred Handscombe

Just as an FYI

I feel for your problems

I have DXbase running on 3 different Win 10 computers with no issues; a
conventional desktop box, an "all in one" and a laptop

All of which have run faultlessly since the W10 updates

The all in one and laptop were running DXB under Win7 which was
upgraded. My desk top is a newer one which came with Win 10 and DXbase
was newly installed, but its predecessor was Win 7 upgraded to Win 10
and ran DXB OK

In all of these I have DXBase installed in a C:\DXBase directory not
under any Windows suggested location

I have something in the back of my mind which is suggested here

http://www.abrohamnealsoftware.com/ 64 bit compatibility

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w181ed1bthlw6t3/ConvertRegTo64DXbase.txt?dl=0

Maybe that helps?

Hank, watching with interest. I have never been able to run DXB on WIN10. I
can load it but unable to import log. Been at it for several years. :))).
Plenty of guys have done it though.

recently I got a new Win 10 computer and amongst other things imported DXBase

dxbase for many years. when setting up the new machine I simply mirrored every
election from the old machine, such as alerts, internet, etc. couple of
questions have developed as I use it.
 - the DX Info screen: my old Win 7 machine in the "origins" column shows the call of the station making the spot
(which is useful especially on 6 meters where propagation differences are extreme). the new Win 10 machine "origins"
column only shows 1 or 2 letters - can't even tell it's a call. just "F" or "L" or "B" e.g. (and
yes I have plenty of room in column to fit any length call). strange, can't figure out why doesn't show full call
 - Internet cluster screen:a) Win 7 machine in Alert column shows "DX" next to every
spot (with either "x" or check mark in QSY column)
Win 10 machine does not show anything in either column for many spots. why? (no difference
in my user options alerts chart compared to Win 7) also it doesn't update previous qso
toollbar or summary window for a spot with no "DX" notation. why are some spots
not being marked "DX"???
 b) Win 7 machine - I can click on any spot and the summary window and
previous qso toolbar are both updated for that call.
Win 10 machine - clicking on a spot does not update anything either summary
window or previous qso toolbar. this is true whether or not there is a
"DX" in alert column
nuisance because I often do this to check whether I have worked the
spotted station before
hope somebody can help with these questions.

Re: [Dxbase] Running DXB From Second Location

2019-11-29 Thread Fred Handscombe

Hi Steve

I faced this problem whilst living overseas

After a few "forgotten memory stick" problems I was told about DropBox
and have been using it ever since

You can point DXbase to the DropBox location so it always opens the
latest log

You also get multiple version back ups in Dropbox although I still make
local backups periodically on a USB HDD

Since then other similar services heve come along like Google drive and
OneDrive but I have not changed from DropBox

Guys, another question. I have several but one at a time.

What is procedure if you are running DXB from second QTH, second home. Run
second copy of program? Or would files become crossed up?

Thanks,

You could edit the ADIF file?

Or go into the logbook and change the "QSLS" column for those 9 QSOs

I routinely upload to LOTW using selection wizard, creating file and then
sending it along after its signed. I attempted to upload a file that had nine
Qs in it. When I tried to send it up, there was an error in one of the QSOs
according to LOTW. So, I stopped the upload and repaired the QSO. However,
when I created another file to send up, the program correctly remembered that I
had sent up everything. I did this once years ago. There is a way to go back
and trick the creation of the file to include those last nine Q's but I cannot
for the life of me recall it.

Any ideas?

Re: [Dxbase] Selection Wizard Issue...again

2019-06-19 Thread Fred Handscombe
You have to get a new registration file with ALL the callsigns in it, or
just put the registered call in the field as it serves no other purpose
anyway, you need 1 log file per on the air callsign.

I have one with 5 or 6 of my personal calls in various countries

I had many robust discussions with Jack on the subject but he wouldn’t
budge!

Re: [Dxbase] missing database at startup

2019-06-14 Thread Fred Handscombe

Hi Jim

I have that T shirt!

On my PC in C:\Windows there is a file called "Dxb2007" labelled
configuration settings

Note NOT the same file in your DXBase2007 install directory

The config file is flat text so can be edited with Notepad etc

Scroll down the to section headed [DIR}

Below that you can enter the path for the new location of your log book
under DATAPATH, then it should find it Ok and boot

Best to save DXBase config with a new name first!

I had a system crash and the machine on which a DXbase2007 database resided
no longer exists. This situation has been cleaned up except for one system
which had the prompt for database and column order at startup enabled.

Now when I start DXbase on that system, an error box appears (which is OK)
but when OK is clicked, DXbase exits without giving me a chance to correct
the error condition.

Where is this prompt stored in configuration data? It must be somewhere
that I can modify. Else it appears that the only recourse is to reinstall
the program.

Sending this to both groups..

Well, I'm still running 2007 on an XP laptop. Worried about its life, etc. I
am running WIN7 on other machines but understand Windows 10 may be the best way
to go for a new machine for DXB. I'm not intuitive with software, etc. Is
there a version of Windows 10 I should look for? Pro, Home, etc.? And I'm
wondering how complex it is to get 2007 running on a WIN10 computer. I do not
want to change to another logging program. DXB works perfectly for me. I
would like to hear some suggestions if you don't mind.

Fred,

TRY this -- NOTE!! Since I do not have an IC-7300 -- I am only

taking a guess on this fix ...

In the Radios.ini file for

[ICOM_IC-7300_SPLITOK]

CHANGE the following entry from
P_CWR=3

to read
P_CWR=7

THEN - CHANGE the following entry from

CWR=3

to read

CWR=7

THEN - CHANGE the following entry from

DefaultCWR=3

to read

DefaultCWR=7

Then SAVE your Radios.ini file and execute DXbase2007 again and
this time - try to log CW-R

Fred --- In DXbase2007 Radios.ini file -- if the MODE is NOT part of what
DXbase was built-around .. We normally set that mode to ZERO ..
But, for the sake of CW versus CW-R -- ICOM has CW as a 3 and CW-R as a 7

And,. since DXbase2007 doesn't have a CW-R -- I am NOT too sure that
the above mentioned FIX will even work...

You might ask Neal for some assistance on this also!!

THAT IS IT!!! Nothing you have to do with your Logbook mdb file... You are

HERE are the words from the ARRL website

Midway and Kure Islands are Now Deleted DXCC Entities
03/31/2017

Midway and Kure Islands have been placed on the list of DXCC deleted entities,
effective August 26, 2016. This came about as an unintended consequence of
action last summer by then-President Barack Obama that expanded the
Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to include the northwestern Hawaiian
Islands west of Ni’ihau Island, making it the largest contiguous protected
conservation area under the US flag.

Midway (KH4) had qualified for DXCC status by virtue of its being governed by a
separate administration. Because it is now under the administration of
Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, however, it becomes a deleted
entity. Approximately 50 people live on Midway, including US Fish and Wildlife
Service staffers and contractors. The Battle of Midway, a turning point in the
Allied World War II Pacific Campaign, took place in June 1942.

Now uninhabited, Kure Island (KH7K), a part of Hawaii, is separated from the
rest of the state by Midway; because of that, it qualified for DXCC status
under Section II, 2 (b) (iii) of the DXCC Rules — separation from its “parent”
Hawaii. Midway Island’s change in DXCC status in turn made Kure Island no
longer eligible for DXCC status, since Kure no longer is separated from the
rest of Hawaii by intervening land or islands that are part of another DXCC
entity.

Kure Island once was home to a US Coast Guard LORAN station, remnants of which
are still evident. It has been a state wildlife sanctuary since 1981.

The relevant parts of Section II of the DXCC Rules follow:

A Geographic Separation Entity may result when a single Political Entity is
physically separated into two or more parts. The part of such a Political
Entity that contains the capital city is considered the Parent for tests under
these criteria. One or more of the remaining parts resulting from the
separation may then qualify for separate status as a DXCC Entity if they
satisfy paragraph a) or b) of the Geographic Separation Criteria, as follows.

b) Island Areas (Separation by Water):

A new entity results in the case of an island under any of the following
conditions:

iii) The island is separated from its Parent by intervening land or islands
that are part of another DXCC entity, such that a line drawn along a great
circle in any direction, from any part of the island, does not touch the Parent
before touching the intervening DXCC entity. There is no minimum separation
distance for the first island entity created under this rule. Additional island
entities may be created under this rule, provided that they are similarly
separated from the Parent by a different DXCC entity and separated from any
other islands associated with the Parent by at least 800 km.

Neither Midway nor Kure was able to be activated without prior permission and
only for a planned DXpedition. Only contacts made on August 25, 2016, or
earlier will count for these two entities.

-

JUST FYI to all DXbase users.

73, Joe WA6AXE

I am importing an Adif file into one of my DXBase .mdb files.
All the Q's show in the Log when I finish. I then Initialize
the tables.
However, when I Initialize the tables, only 369 of the 395
Q's show up as read. The Adif import file had 26 Q's in it.
When I try to use Selection Wizard and bracket the QSO
dates for the 26 new Q's, nothing shows up in the QSO
Records area.

Any ideas ?

Check the entry in the "Opr Call" column

DXbase has a bizarre way of "regulating" the licensed copy

If the Opr Call is not one on your "licence" they do not export or print

[Dxbase] 2K/GK/MK mapping

2015-12-18 Thread Fred Handscombe

Hi All

Below from 425DX News

G - From 1 January to 31 December 2016 the prefixes GK, MK, and 2K
will indicate a station operating from Cornwall and the Isles of
Scilly. The Regional Secondary Locator "K" stands for Kernow,
i.e.

Cornwall in Cornish language, and has been made available for a
period of up to one year on a temporary and optional basis.
Information on "The Kernow Award", offered by the Poldhu Amateur
Radio Club, at http://gb2gm.org/index.php/the-kernow-award.

In my Dxbase
2K maps to GJ - WRONG
GK maps to G OK
MK is not mapped at all!

GK0JFK was used once before in the quite distant past (early 80s) from
the JFK Memorial at Runnymede, technically a small piece of land which
is US territory near London but doesn't count as such for DXCC!

I'm sure there are other formats in use as well.

Re: [Dxbase] Switching between Radio 1 and Radio 2

After all these years I had never looked at the band plan, it took some

I cant see how a "band plan" is relevant to which radio I use though,
unless I had one radio for HF and another one for VHF which I don't

If I select "DISABLE" for each entry what happens? Does it "disable"
the radios or disable the "band plan"?

I do not want a band plan to select which radio I use!

As a supplementary question where is the "alternate" band plan to be
found? (Mentioned in the Log Defaults tab of user options?

Were you able to replicate Dave's original problem in that Radio 2

[Dxbase] QSL label problem in Win 8

Hi All

I was trying to print some QSL labels today on my new shack computer
which is running Windows 8.1

The labels failed to print, or even open

Investigating I opened them in the label designer. I got messages about
unknown variables

The labels are 3 QSO labels

It seems in Win 8 the second and third row variables like DATE2, DATE3,
TIME2, TIME3 etc. have disappeared somehow?

I have tried two Win 8.1 computers

Reverting to my Win 7 desktop which just a arrived back from A6 all is
well and all the variables are shown in the list

Any one have any ideas how to get the labels working under Win 8 please?

Re: [Dxbase] Database update...

Hi Steven

Surprised no-one answered

Joe WA6AXE has written an excellent programme to update the main database.

Seek it out!

[Dxbase] Call mapping anomaly

2014-11-27 Thread Fred Handscombe
Hi All

Working some DX this morning there is slight anomaly in callsign mapping

HC2WAT/8 maps to HC not HC8

Same for HC2ANT/8

DXbase picks up it is HC8 for WPX but then doesn't decide the DXCC is HC8

Re: [Dxbase] [dxbase] Call mapping anomaly

2014-11-27 Thread Fred Handscombe

Hi Neil

Yes but only retrospectively

I noticed because the DX cluster spots were showing HC in the Summary window
and telling me worked but lucky I noticed the station was actually in HC8
which was needed

So in real time the information was wrong

Fred

Change the DXCC code for the callsign inside the log entry and it will ask
if you want to add the result to the callsign map. Say Yes and you have now
fixed the problem!

Re: [Dxbase] Update to the Refdata (Alias Map table)

2014-10-31 Thread Fred Handscombe
Hi Neal

Yes absolutely!

I know the people involved personally and very well, and all they want is
perfection. I have been a user since it was launched and have used it to
“clean up” my DXbase logs

I have been pretty proactive with my DXbase databases along with Joe’s input to
keep them as up to date as possible

I have been back entering my old paper logs going back to 1978 at the moment.
In fact there is an old bug in DXbase as when you import old logs from ADIF it
never checks the start/end date windows in its own files for old calls as the
data is imported and maps everything as if it were “today”. Pushing that back
to Clublog then gets me a few pages of errors in call mapping. I use that to
manually clean up DXbase, but when I look many of the mappings are actually
there, but not used during an ADIF import.

My method is

Type into Fast Log Entry to make an ADIF

Import to DXbase

Export from DXbase again in ADIF

Load to Clublog (and LOTW)

Manually enter corrections and exceptions in DXbase

Very, very occasionally (like 1 in 3000 QSOs, which is a typical UK paper log
book) if find a call which is not mapped in CL but I have written notes in my
log about the QSO. Then I email Alan to have a look into it.

Do you trust the Clublog database more than DXBases? Its a serious question, I
can make it so we periodically import the database and use it, but when I did
it the first time there were more than a few disagreements with its settings.
I enthusiastically support Clublog, they seem to be the only people working on
getting it right but just wanted your opinion!

ClubLog maps this MA0 prefix to Scotland .. and doing

So, since this callsign produces NO Prefix - if you log

You can setup the MA0 prefix to now log as GM by:

Go to Main Menu Tools/ Database Access/ Country prefixes...

When the window comes up -- go to the Alias Map TAB and

No problem, you are the one doing all the hard work

I had an email form someone else about MB

MB is a VERY rarely used prefix and, like GB, could be anywhere in UK (G GI GU
GJ GW GM or G)

I would say delete all the MB mappings and worry if one is ever active

Re: [Dxbase] Automatic Updates

Hi Dick

I have had all my DXbase logs and settings stored in a DropBox for about 2,
maybe 3 years www.dropbox.com

It is a not a back up per-se but a copy the files are stored off my hard
drive, and multiple previous versions are preserved and can be recovered.
When switch on another computer then the files are updated onto that one
too. As I travel between 3 shacks I can access all my logs (about 30 calls)
from any location.

I do also make local back-up copies on an external hard drive in all

Use the Non-DXbase file import utility for this. When you select the file type,
specify that its for LoTW ADIF.

I can download a report in .adi format that shows my credited QSOs. Is it possible to
import these data into DXBase to update the Award field without doing it
manually? I suspect not since in some cases there isn't even a full call in the field

DXbase does some (strange) things based on the OPR CALL field

You would need a key file which mentions ALL you previous call signs for
it to work properly if you have filled out that field by your callsigns.

You can check what you have by opening DXbase and doing Help About to see
what calls you have registered?

Hello all,

I just got DXbase running but ran into an issue (which might be solved bij
some kind of setting)

I have owned 2 different callsigns in the past (and my present one), but all
3 from the same DXCC entity (PA - The Netherlands)

I imported my logs and setup up the DX-cluster to warn me if some kind of
missing DXCC/Mode/Band comes up.

It looks however that it tests the incoming spots against my entries of of
my last (and still active) callsign.

Is there a setting which tells this comparing mechanism to check the
incoming spots with all entries I made under all 3 callsigns I owned?

Thanks in advnace.

Hi Al

If you uploaded all your QSOs before the problem to Clublog you can get them
all back again!

Just log on to Clublog, go to settings, callsigns and on the right against
each call there is a button Download which will give you back your own log

If you use the non DXBase import utility to import that adif file DXbase
will reject all the contacts it already has and add in the ones you thought
you had lost!!

Its a handy back up of last resort!

Re: [Dxbase] Rookie needs some help

2012-05-20 Thread Fred Handscombe
Gary, Cecil

That sounds a lot of work!

I am assuming you know the date you changed your callsign and didn't make
QSOs on the same date with both calls?

1 - Back up your log (that I agree with!)

2 Export the date range for your first call to an ADIF file (Use the
selection wizard, you may need to practice as it seems to work
counter-intuitively! Does mean BEFORE or AFTER the given date?)

3 Sign that ADIF file with your LOTW key for your old call and upload to
LOTW

4 Export the date range for your new call to another ADIF file

5 Sign that ADIF file with your LOTW key for your new call and upload to
LOTW

Optionally you could then use those 2 ADIF files to create TWO DXbase logs,
one for each call, using the Non DXB import routine

 Cecil,

I don't know if you need to break your data base up into two records or
 not.
First try working with the single data base and do some editing work to
 straighten things out.

 1. Make a back up of your current mdb file so in case something goes awry
 you can start over again.

 2. Now you need to reset the QSLS field back to its original setting for
 all
records in the log. The QSLS field should now have all records set to
either LOTW or Both, meaning you've sent both a paper card and set the
 LOTW
flag. You need to change all the LOTW settings back to where they were.
 Go
to the first record in the log and click on the QSLS field of that record.
Now click on Edit/Replace. In the Replace window type Both in the Find
what: box and Card in the Replace with: box. Now click on the
 Replace
All button. DXB will now work its way down through the log to the last
record and change each instance of Both to Card, which removes the LOTW
part. When that is done click on Cancel to close the window. Again, from
the first record in the log, click on Edit/Replace and enter LOTW in the
Find what: box and No in the Replace with: box. Click on the
 Replace
All button. DXB will again go down through the log and change all the
records that were flagged as being sent to LOTW and change them back to
 No,
meaning nothing has been sent. This has now cleared all the LOTW flags
 from
 the QSLS field.

 3. In the Opr Call field did you use both your old call, WB5VCE, and your
new call, K5DL, when entering the records? If not and all the records
 have
an Op Call of K5DL you need to segregate which records belong to the old
call and which to the new call. To do this you will need to know the date
you started using your new call. All records prior to this date should
 have
the old call in the Opr Call field. If you already have both calls in the
log skip to Step 5. If you only have K5DL go to Step 4.

 4. Go to the first record in the log and click on the Opr Call field. Now
click on Edit/Replace and the Replace window should say K5DL in the Find
what: box. If not, enter K5DL here. In the Replace with: box type
WB5VCE and click on Replace All. This will cause DXB to change all
entries in the Opr Call filed of the log to WB5VCE. Now go down in the
 log
to the date you started using the new K5DL call. On this record click in
the Opr Call field and Edit/Replace. Fill in the boxes so that you
 replace
WB5VCE with K5DL and click Replace All again. This sets all the records
from here down back to the correct call sign in use at that time. Make
 note
of how many records have the old call and how many records are with the
 new
call. Check the Record counter box at the bottom of the log.

 5. With both old and new calls in the log you can now attempt to create
 two
different adif files for submission to LOTW. Go to Tools/Selection Wizard
and set Output Type to ADIF File and click on the Test only... box.
Now click on the QSO Filters button. Clear all the boxes in the record
filters section and then click on the boxes for No LOTW Submitted and
 QSO
Call =. In the QSO Call = box enter WB5VCE. This will now select all
records for WB5VCE that have not been sent to LOTW. Click on OK and then
Start on the Selection Wizard. When asked create a adif file name and be
sure to click on NO when it asks to update your records. When the Wizard
completes its Test only run exam the number of records it identified and
compare it with the record count from your log. Does it seem correct? If
so clear the Test only box and run it again. This time choose Yes to the
question about setting the LOTW flag. Now do the same procedure again,
 but
this time create an adif file for the records where QSO Call = K5DL.
 Again
do a test run first and if it looks accurate create the adif file and say
Yes to changing the records in the log to LOTW.

You now have two separate adif files to upload to LOTW. One for your old
 call the other

Re: [Dxbase] ITU Zones

2012-05-16 Thread Fred Handscombe
Larry

He is half right!

According to the REAL ITU map, which is for broadcasting purposes, there are
large blank areas most of which have no land in them. ITU stops at 75
zones.

The version of the ITU zones map adopted by amateur radio also numbers the
so called sea zones and so there are 90 ITU Zones for amateur radio
purposes. Two of the ITU sea zones do in fact have land in them (CE0Y and
one of the JDs), both small islands that were probably not considered for
broadcasting.

A definition of all 90 zones was adopted by all IARU Regions some years
back.

I don't think I have a copy of the 90 zone map here in my A6 QTH, if I find
it I will scan it and post it somewhere. There might be a copy on the ARRL
web pages as ITU zones are used in the July IARU contest which ARRL
administers and the zone map *may* be included with the rules?

determining what country the station is located in, I can even determine
whether I need the band country for DXCC. I figured all I want my

 fill
a need for me. Actually, the long awaited and long overdue v. 10 better
 have
some real bells/whistles as I don't see a present need for it in my own

Re: [Dxbase] :  Something stupid that I have done in the past

2012-03-16 Thread Fred Handscombe
Jack

That is a very broad and condemning statement with nothing to back it up! Not
even first hand experience from your comment?

I load my logs to Clublog and find that DXBase makes plenty of errors in
deciding which country I have worked. I use the Clublog feedback to improve
my DXBase
databases. To be factual, and not just make a wild claim, most of the errors
are in the Asiatic Russian prefixes.

If I feel my DXBase is right I give feedback, in the correct forum, and the
accuracy of Clublog improves, or I find out I have made an error! Making wild
statements in the
wrong forum helps no-one.

Clublog's database is being updated almost daily, so something which happened
even a few months back is probably now corrected an it is well worth deleting
an old
log and running it again.

Just throwing out a caution that others have used clublog and discovered
that it's database has quite a few errors in it. So, if you are using it as
the gospel, you're probably creating errors rather than fixing anything.

I did exactly that some time ago. I uploaded my log sometime back and
Clublog noticed the errors (among others). I used the error file to make
the corrections. My point was not to try to figure out if I had mistakes or
a way to correct them but to mention that it is real easy to make mistakes
like this! (Usually if a mistake is to be made I am one of the first to try
 it out! :-)

 Bill,

Try running you log through Clublog. I think the error report will tell you
 which qso's (by call
 sign) have the wrong prefix.

This is just an FYI regarding a mistake that I was making and it was messing
up the prefix column in my records.

Sometimes I would hear a station and enter it into DXBase. I do this to get
the record of whether I have worked the station before and on which bands.
If I accidentally entered the call wrong or copied the call wrong I would
correct the call in the callsign column.. If you hit enter again on that
line it will correct the country that is entered.
This unfortunately does NOT fix the prefix column and leaves the original
prefix entered. I suppose this is no big deal but it does screw up the
prefix totals for the Prefix award.

I am probably the only person that has done this but just in case there is
another dummy out there you might want to be careful.

luck with the cw keying. I have configured the port to com1 as well as

Re: [Dxbase] Fw: ADD CALL TODXBASE PLEASE!

2011-07-28 Thread Fred Handscombe

This definitely does work, I have used many different .mdb files

However

You MUST have a DXbase registered callsign as the operator

If you do not do this the logging will appear to work but you will not be able
to print QSL labels and those calls will not appear in any ADIF export for
LOTW for example. Maybe some other features as well

If you want some really useful feedback on your log, and especially the
Russian prefixes, I suggest you join Clublog (www.clublog.org) once you load

using this to fine tune my DXbase mapping file

Club log probably has the most accurate prefix mapping database

 Gary,

Only you can make the decision about WHEN to upgrade ..

If you wait until ver 1.09 -- just be aware that the current
RU callsign/prefixes mod is strictly for the Refdata -- I do NOT
check any of the QSOs ..

MOST of the time -- the RU QSOs that you would log would be ok
-- just look over the PREFIX column of your logbook for any glaring
 prefix that looks wrong ...

If you go for ver 1.08 -- then YES -- run the Updater of mine ...

 Joe,

Well, I think I just got motivated to upgrade to DXB2007! I started
 looking
at the Russian prefix changes in earnest and quickly came to the
 conclusion
that I would probably make a horrific mess of my refdata.mdb file by
attempting manual changes myself. So I guess now I'm trying to decide
whether to upgrade to 2007 V1.08 and use your Checker/Updater program or
wait for V1.09 to be released with the new refdata.mdb file. I am
 leaning
toward the later, but would like to check something first.

I have been working the All Asia CW DX contest this weekend and have
 quite a
few RU contacts with the new prefixes. If I import them into my current
DXB2006 mdb and later upgrade to DXB2007 V1.09 will the data in my 2006
 mdb
file be updated to reflect the new prefix allocations or should I still
download and run your Refdata/Logbook MDB Analyzer Updater Ver 4.31? I
suspect the latter would be the case, but just wanted to check before I
 step
 off the edge.

Re: [Dxbase] FW: Re: M/callsign - What's With This?

2011-05-31 Thread Fred Handscombe
Jim

In which case the logging programmes are WRONG!

/M has NEVER ever been a legal suffix to indicate a station is in England

M/ is legally required PREFIX (and only prefix) for vistors to England
operating under CEPT

England, and other countries of the UK , have never had call areas so a
numeral, however desirable for the logging programmes shortcomings is not
required, is not legal to use either!

This really is a fuss about nothing

1 - the OPERATOR should be in charge of his staion not the computer

2 - there were 2 stations using M/ calls I saw spotted over the weekend. It
takes less than 30 seconds using DXBase to add these as full callsign maps.

One of those is really operating illegally as the use of M/ is intended to
be a short term visitor (maybe CEPT says 1 month?) and he has lived in
England for a number of years. Maybe he really does go home each month a
reset the clock?

73 Fred
G4BWP

The M/ or /M for the most part most logging programs consider this to be
England G.

 Hi all

I have posted the new 1.08 release of DXBase in a new installer (
 http://www.abrohamnealsoftware.com/DXB2007.zip). This release contains a
 fix
to ADIF export so its compatible with current ADIF Standards 2.27 release
 as
well as support for expanded import of data from external programs. Unless
there is an urgent case made, this will be the last release of the 2007
 version of DXBase.

To celebrate this week's Dayton Hamvention, I have dropped the price of
DXBase by $10. This means a new license costs $49.99. an upgrade from
DXB2006 is $15.99 and an upgrade from an earlier version is $39.99.

These prices will be in effect thru the end of next week!

Re: [Dxbase] cluster setup

2011-05-07 Thread Fred Handscombe
Hello Alan

I have DXBase 2007 and Windows XP

I looked at my Hosts file and, like another poster, did not find VE1DXI

So I added ve1dxi.no-ip.com to my hosts file. Once I finished I clicked on
the empty line below then closed the Host window.

I was able to connect to VE1DXI by reselecting it in the appropriate menu.
Note that even though it was added at the end of the list in the Host box it
had then been sorted into the list in alphabetical order.

I then closed the connection, closed DXBase and reopened it. VE1DXI was
still selected and connected up again

I have not rebooted totally yet!

SPAMMING with automated skimmer spots then the traffic would be a lot less!

Frank really is making himself unpopular and will be one to avoid calling in

 Hi Jack,

Based on 44000 spots generated during the ARRL SSB Contest, here are some
 assuptions:
1, Weekend spot trattic of 44K (which is way high, for instance CQWW RTTY
 contest had 30K)
 2. Spots are a maximum of 80 characters so I took an average of 40
 characters
 3. The total of week spots is the weekend spot load plus half of the
 weekend
 spots (again quite conservative)

Given these assimptions, there are a total of 66000 spots at a total
character count of 2.6MB. With 4.3 weeks a month thats a monthly load of
11.26MB, Yearly load is 135.2 MB

Not such a factor for internet usage I hope?

2011-02-19 Thread Fred Handscombe
Hi Joe

If you do Help, About DXBase 2007 then list of registered calls are
displayed. They could be copied into a utility manually?

I guess many people only have one call, although with the licensing process
in the US and vanity calls maybe that is not so!

Thanks for looking, I'll just have to scroll all 50+k QSOs! or learn about
MS Access

 Fred and all:

Fred's email came to me directly - and, I did not notice that he had the
DXbase Reflector on the email also - until Mike sent his email too.

ALL -- The registered callsigns is encrypted and I can not get to that
 info
automatedly. This is purposed done by the author.

The only way that I could possibly make some kind of utility - would be to
 have
the USER by hand type-in the authorized/registered callsigns .. but,
 this
brings in some problems also -- some users do not know where to look for
 the
Registered Callsigns that were in their REG file ..

Sorry - but, this one is not do-able as a fully automated utility.

 Hi Joe

I want to add my thanks fo the support you give the DXbase users!

I have a suggestion for a new report or utility.

DXBase uses the Opr Call column to validate the use of the programme.
 I
have had many discussions with Jack over the years as to why this is
 wrong
under the licencing conditions in some countries and hopefully something
 new
will be used under the new ownership/SW release.

The way the OPR call column is used introduces errors into the logs and
 the
way they interact with the likes of Club Log and LOTW. In fact it was
 using
Club log I have spotted my problem (check it out and join at for free
 www.clublog.org )

First the Opr Cal is NOT validated against the valid registered callsigns
which it should be. You can enter anything in the column and you are NOT
warned, which seems a little unwise when the column is used later to
 validate the data.

Second if the Opr call entry is NOT one of the registered callsigns then
 if
you do an ADIF export to LOTW, for example, then that line of data is NOT
 included in the export file.

Third if you do an LOTW export and certain lines are excluded, these line
ARE marked as sent to LOTW even though THEY HAVE NOT BEEN sent!! How
 crazy
is that? Maybe you see my disagreemnet with this method of validating
 the
 user.

So Joe my request is a report or utility that checks each log line for a
valid registered call against the registration file, and flags up any
 wrong
entries in Opr Call column. If there was a way to open each entry for
editing, to undo the errors introduced as above, or do it automatically,
 that would be even better

Re: [Dxbase] Suggestion for new utility/report

2011-02-19 Thread Fred Handscombe
Neal

Your first paragraph is stating what I have argued several times until I just
gave up with Jack!

That is how the UK licensing works. If a friend uses my call I am legally
obliged to note his call in my log. In the old days he had to sign his name
too on the paper log. Just exactly how *I* interpret the purpose of the OPR
call column

BUT!

If you do that (enter the real OPR Call on each QSO) then you will not be able
to

- print QSLs
- Export to ADIF
(probably something else!)
(You can only log on to the packet cluster with a registered callsign also)

for ANY of the QSOs made by your friend

Your second paragraph is incorrect, OPR Call most definitely IS used to
validate the use of DXBase 2007 by the registered callsign(s)

QSL cards/label printing and ADIF exporting REALLY IS validated by the Opr
call

I have directly experienced it many times with QSL labels

This morning I solved my missing 1044 QSOs in Club log mystery

I was missing 1044 QSOs in 2003 in Club log, the totals per year on DXB and CL
were close all years except 2003

Scrolling the log I saw we used my callsign with 2 other operators in our Field
day activity in 2003

I changed those Opr call entries to G4BWP (making my log illegal!) and out
of nowhere I get 1044 QSOs exported to ADIF and when upload to Club log the
2003 year totals matched

The one and only thing I did was change the OPR call from what it was before
to G4BWP

It was slightly different in the old DOS versions. You HAD to have the
registered call included on the text to be printed on the QSL labels. If you
did not they would not print!

I don't think it is a bug as its too reliable and so directly related to the
list of registered callsigns

  Hi Fred

I think that the concept of the OPR Call field is that it should allow anyone
visiting the shack to operate and for the registered owner to know who it was,
not enforcing the call against the registration. So the concept that it should
be a registered call is not how I understand the use of it.

The other two points, however, do not appear to live up to the purpose of the
field (it should not be part of ADIF export validation). The DXBase re-write
will only use a registration key for installation and not for operational
verification BTW. I will see if there is an easy way to fix the opr call
validation 'bug' in the current version!

There is a DXCC related report in the standard reports that is called
 dxccnewperyr.rpy
this report is suppsoed to show how many new DXCC's were worked in each
year, I know I have a lot of new ones over the last few years

This report has a bug in it as it seems not to list years more recent
 than 2007
It also goes back to 1955, surely it should only go back to the oldest
QSO in the log instead of showing (in my case) lots of zeros prior to 2000

on the other hand the report dxccyear.rpt only lists years that the log
 covers

 I worked 196 DXCC's in 2010, my best year was 2007 and I have 95 already
this year. Not too bad for supposedly no sunspots ;-)

On a different note, I seem to rarely use the repors system but every
time I do I find a new report to play with, some of them are pretty
slick. Do any of you have any favourites

Seriously I cannot see what the fuss is all about. I too updated my DXBase

the new countries that came along, plus various prefix changes and IOTA

Maybe it does look hard on the surface but it is not when you try yourself

Always take the precaution of saving the data before you try and then you

As far as different logging programs go I really could just use 2007
forever as its that easy to add new countries to the database. I have
another logging program here that ive been messing with for almost a year
I think and it works well and is pretty simple and its free but thats not
the reason i chose to try it.. I just tried it for fun:).. Im not gonna
mention the name because it really doesnt matter. DxBase is still my #1
choice and ive been using it since the dos days with only one problem!
When I started Jack told me my IC-735was out dated and I should buy a new
rig if I wanted rig control ( ill bet he doesnt even remember that). Well
that didnt set well with me and I bitched till we got it interfaced with
dxbase :)... Why do we need constant updates anyway ? If it aint broke
dont fix it !.. Sure the updated countries with an automatic updater is a
plus but as far as the rest of the program it works for me...

I have been working on entering paper logs in to my computer. I have the
first two logs done and I found two problems.

One, Fast Log Entry does not set DXBVAL=3. DXbase uses that to indicate
the contact is valid for DXCC. If that program is used a lot of manual
work will be needed after the import. W3SB's excel spreadsheet does set
DXBVAL, so it is better to use with DXbase.

Second my old logs are not all in GMT or UTC. I have been working on a
C++ program that will help me with automatically converting the local time
to UTC. I have the date conversion working but still have work to do.

May I suggest to anyone in this situation to try joining Clublog

www.clublog.org

While its original purpose was a multi-band DXCC ladder for a club it has a
very good set of callsign checking algorithms and exceptions to the rules

Once you register you can upload your plain ADIF log

You will receive back a list of exceptions, calls which do not match the
logged country etc. It is worth joining just for that, plus the fun element
of seeing your score on a worldwide basis

The web site also links to their reflector which is a mine of information

Well worth a try in my opinion

When this type of thing happens no program makes this an easy job.
Garbage in is Garbage out. It is still messed up, true you can get print

If you are a brave man maybe you can try and get the TT Omni 7 working!

I have been given 2 or 3 different .INI files but none really work, except
to read the frequency as a QSO is logged

Spot clicking doesnt work at all. Split or no split.

Not urgent as I am now using a K3 mainly which does work properly

Does anyone, except the ICOM owners, have any
problems with any RIG (Radios.ini file) - when
you click-on a spot that has the QSX and FREQ
 info?

After going into the Radios.ini file and working
with Rolf on his FT-450, I went into my own
TS-850 Radios.ini entry and modified it some more
for fastest QSY time and 100% accuracy all of the
 time.

If anyone is having a SPLIT (spt with QSX and freq)
problem, could you send me an email - just pse reply
to this email with what rig you are running.

 Tnx in advance!

If you ever get the Omni 7 talking please let us know. I have tried every

I picked up an Omni 6+ later and that works 100%, and is a better radio than

I have no plans to abandon DxBase at this time either, but I would like to
see my Ten Tec Omni VII to be controlled by DXBase and respond when
 clicking
on a spot. I currently use a radios.ini file that will read the frequency
 only.

To that end, I have spent portions of Saturday and all day playing with
 the
.ini file to make it work. I used my serial port monitor to check the
 data
on several programs and can see what makes other programs work with the
 Omni
VII and it appears that I am still missing something in the radios.ini
 file.
I have logged each change that I made and what results were produced, but
 I
seem to be at a roadblock and need a little help.

Does anyone have more detailed documentation on the radio.ini file options
other than what is in the help file??

I have not given up yet, but I am just worn out at the moment. If and
when I get it working, I will publish the results to the group.

Re: [Dxbase] Field Order help

2009-07-02 Thread Fred Handscombe
Jon

To get to see the new ordered log you need to open user options and tick
database and field order in the general tab

Then shut DXB and reopen. You see a menu where you can choose the new
column order

Once you are happy with what you have done you can un-tick the box and DXB
will start without showing that menu

Be prepared for all your log book columns to have defaulted to the base
width once you make that change, very annoying!

The help file in 2007 points you to run a utility programnamed
 FLDORDER
which doesn't exist in the program group here.

I run Dxbutility, click on Field Order and up pops a screen to create a
field order file. Click on new and the two lists of DXB fields are
populated. I've moved the fields around on the left column to my liking,
clicked save and saved the file as a .CO file type.

When I restart DXB I get no message asking me to select the CO file, it
 just
comes back as the default. The default is really getting under my skin as
most of the content is useless to my needs and I end up scrolling over to
say, Grid or the QSL columns etc constantly.

What am I doing wrong trying to rearrange my view of the log?

 Thanks in advance!

 Hello all,

I'm attempting to export an entire log to an ADIF file. According to the
window below the date/time fields, there are 2808 records. When I export
everything using the wizard (with no filters selected), only 2765 records
are getting exported. I've tried compacting and repairing the .mdb file
using the DXB Utility, and I've verified many times that nothing in the
 QSO
filters selection is cutting back on the export. I use the same settings
 to
export my primary log of ~25,000 QSOs and it all exports perfectly.

Any thoughts on where to look for the discrepancies? This is too complex
 for
 manual checking. Thanks in advance.

Satellite Qs don't count for usual awards and the stats are therefore not
included in the normal Summary Window. There is a spot in the lower right

Re: [Dxbase] ITU Zones

2009-02-12 Thread Fred Handscombe
Hello Gary

I am sorry but you have been assured wrongly!!!

On behalf of RSGB, and based on some very detailed research by G3KMA and G3HTA,
I wrote a paper on the definition of ITU Zones for amateur use for the IARU
Region 1 conference some year back.

This paper was eventually adopted by ALL IARU Regions which includes the USA!

I quote

W9 (IL, WI west of 90W) in ITU zone 7
W9 (IL, WI east of 90W) in ITU zone 8

ITU zones are used by the ITU for broadcast purposes and have been used for
Amateur Radio for contests and awards. They are defined largely by lines of
latitude and longitude (not state boundaries!)

ARRL had previously published a version of the ITU zone boundaries which
conveniently bent around some state boundaries but this was superceded by my
papaer adopted by all IARU regions including ARRL

There many other exceptions where national boundaries are crossed by ITU zones
and some countries like UA/0 have many ITU zones in them.

Ok, now that I've been assured that IL is in ITU Zone 8 causes some
questions. How in the world did I get my IL mdb file set up so that the ITU
default was 6 and not 8? Next question: How do I fix these in my log? I
can't just find and replace all 6's with 8's as some probably should be in
zone 6. If I set up my TQSL with the correct zone numbers and then upload
the logs with the bad numbers will that create a problem for LOTW users?
  Any help appreciated.

a RS232 compatible serial port, you must use a level converter like the
 Kenwood
IF232C, which will give you the RS232 interface your looking for. Then it
 is
as simple as connecting the cable.

Subject: [Dxbase] Radio interface Kenwood TS450S

I've read the help files and the online information from DXbase, and I
think I'm ready to connect the computer to the rig. Last check.is it
just a DB9 serial plug cable to a DIN that I need to interface to the
radio? Nothing else? Totally plug play? Or will I need to do some
config exercises after the cable is in place?

If anyone reading has connected a Kenwood TS450 successfully, I'd
appreciate it if you could drop me a direct email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and tell me how it went.

 Thanks

 David

[Dxbase] Simple back up

2007-04-07 Thread Fred Handscombe
I use a software package from VCOM called Autosave

It automatically backs uop files you use, I use an external USB HDD for some
redundancy.

It has saved me more than once and once it is set up you have to do NOTHING
to be backed up!

You can buy it from the web.

Is there a simple way to back up DxBase without going thru all the steps to
the folder? Tnx Ed K8ZZ

[Dxbase] Previous QSO Module

2007-01-29 Thread Fred Handscombe
I believe this is/was a new feature in 2007?

I find it very useful when going through bureau cards

I would like a feature that finds callsigns that almost match, but differ by
1 letter or digit. Most logging errors are only 1 element out (eg CW copying
U for V etc)

The ability to switch on or off either search mode would be a nice addition
too.

 Subject: [Dxbase] Previous QSO Module

 Hello all,
A strange thing just happened just not to me while trying to update some
entries. I entered the call K1DG, then Find. I got a list of 5 K1DG
 worked
but I also got 2 OK1DG. I then asked for OK1DG and only got the 2
 entries,
 as it should be.
I had noticed a similar occurrence once before but I didn't think much of
it. I did the initialize thing and just assumed it solved the problem. I
did not try to repeat it before. This time I initialized and the problem
repeated itself. I am using 2007. I have never had it happen before. I
 am
in the process of updating all my cards and have been putting the program
 through it's paces.
Is there something I have done wrong or is there something I should have
done? Has anyone else experienced this happening to them. I have not
notice any activity on the Reflector.
 Thanks, Ben KB1FJ

Jack -- saw this as part of a note on the Florida Contest Group
 reflector...a fellow talking about ACLog...

Using LOTW through my logging program is truly painless and a simple thing
of beauty. Press one button, enter a password and the software figures
 out
the latest unsubmitted Q's and uploads them automatically. Then press
another and download the confirmations. The Q's that are confirmed are
 then
marked in the log database as received and the awards page automatically
 shows the credit tally.

That would be pretty slick for DXBase...73 de Greg-N4CC

[Dxbase] MicroHam CW keyer and Omni 6 interface cable?

2007-01-15 Thread Fred Handscombe
Chuck

The great thing about Microham is that they publish on their web site
schematics of all their cables so you can make your own if you want to. Its
handy when u change rigs etc

http://www.microham.com/Downloads/CAT%20CIV.pdf is the cable for the Omni VI

Its a mini stereo at the Mucirham end and a mono mini at the TT end

For the other MH units look under support

Subject: [Dxbase] MicroHam CW keyer and Omni 6 interface cable?

Anyone else out there using the microHam CW keyer with DXBase and an Omni 6
rig?

What kind of cable is used for the radio interface? Is it as simple as a
cable with mini stereo phone plugs at both ends? Or does it have a 25-pin
connector at the radio end?

I purchased the keyer for use with my K2, and couldn't get it to work with
my newly built KIO2 interface. So, I tried hooking up the keyer to the Omni
6 with just the stereo plug and couldn't get communications with the Omni
either.

Hope I haven't damaged the keyer.
