[e-gold-list] How is the market in Brazil

2003-06-19 Thread Andrew McMeikan
Looks like Brazil is trying to stop laundering.

below is some stuff snipped from
http://www.narconews.com/Issue30/article803.html

Item 2 might be a motivator for people to get an e-gold account instead.

They have until June 25.

   cya, Andrew...

According to the Attorney General, this problem tackles the true power
behind organized crime. “We have to create a culture against money
laundering in Brazil,” he said. “For this to happen, we have to make our
efforts more productive and efficient. It’s a long job ahead.”

The plan is composed with twelve measures, of which the first four were
announced at a press conference last Tuesday:

1) Banks must notify the Central Bank of all deposits or withdrawals over
$100,000 Reals (slightly over $30,000 US dollars);

2) The creation of a general registry of bank accounts;

3) A new Department of Recuperation of Illicit Profits, and;

4) The restructuring of the Council of Control of Financial Activities
(COAF, in its Portuguese initials).

Henrique Meirelles emphasized the ethical commitment of the Central Bank
toward the legality of the origin of funds that circulate in the banks.
“These measures will affect barely a thousand bank transactions a day from
a universe of 120,000 bank accounts, and only on transactions of this
species, so as not to harm the common citizen,” he added.

The measures have already been published in the Official Record of the
government, and according to Justice Department official Cláudia Chagas
they will take effect in 15 days (by June 25th). All cases of suspected
money laundering that come under the Justice Minister’s scrutiny will be
dealt with rapidly. And the focus will be on the largest transactions. The
rest of the 12 new measures will be announced on a yet undetermined date.

At the risk of not getting a lump, I must say I am not all that amazed.
I probably would trust jpm more than whatever checking equifax did.

I am amazed that so much gold is being given away, such enthusiasim! I
truely wish I could afford to give as much away.

I am also a little surprised that it is taking so long to be soaked up.

1MDC, gotta love it.

188428amc should you feel then need to send me a gram, disclaimer- I'm not
a new account.

   cya, Andrew...

SIX of the TEN 1mdc prizes of one gram of free gold have been given away.

 that means four to go!

 free gold!

PS: as a 1mdc wish list, could you show a total number somewhere of all
1mdc holdings so it can be compared to how much is in the e-gold account,
just like bamdex? Also what about having accounts that need not specify
an e-gold account, as more and more use 1mdc, it could end up that some
people never even want to open an e-gold account.

Since th Euro is flavour of the month, here is a reason not to taste it ;)

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/htx/nm/20011126/od/eurocoins_dc_1.html

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Two of the eight euro coins due to come into
circulation in January release so much nickel that people allergic to the
metal could develop hand eczema, according to a study obtained by Reuters
on Friday.

Just five minutes of contact with one-euro (88 U.S. cents) and two-euro
coins containing nickel alloy could trigger symptoms, including skin
inflammation or itching, the study by a Swedish dermatologist and British
laboratory scientist said.

2001-11-27 Thread Andrew McMeikan

New banking guidlines are out at
http://www.treas.gov/press/releases/po813.htm

In an attempt to prevent terrorists from moving money.

While aimed at deposit taking banks, the general aim is to kill anything
that aids money movement from US banks to 'shell banks'

here is a quote at the end

The Treasury Department intends to issue expeditiously a proposed rule
that would also prohibit broker-dealers from maintaining accounts with
foreign shell banks and from using accounts to provide banking services
indirectly to such shell banks. Treasury also intends to propose a rule
requiring broker-dealers to keep records of the owners of foreign banks to
which they provide accounts and the foreign banks' agents for service of
legal process.

Could gold based systems be viewed as 'indirectly' providing banking
services?

[e-gold-list] Re: How Penny Per Page Might Work

2001-11-25 Thread Andrew McMeikan

snip
 CONCLUSION:
To really do something about untraceability you need to be untraceable.
Draw this graph I outlined. Think about where the markets are for tools
for privacy and untraceability. Realize that many of the far out' sweet
spot applications are not necessarily immoral: think of freedom fighters

For sweetspot applications that are considered immoral in *any* place in
the world then you get at least a potential problem for those that
promote/encourage/use depending on the reach and proportional power of
those offended

in communist-controlled regimes, think of distribution of birth control
information in Islamic countries, think of Jews hiding their assets in
Swiss bank accounts, think of revolutionaries overthrowing bad
governments, think of people avoiding unfair or confiscatory taxes,
think of people selling their expertise when some guild says they are
 forbidden to.

I can think of evil 'guilds' that should be defied yet how do you protect
against them when they have increadibly large power? It is these very
large 'guilds' that object, they notice even if the ones you are truely
against are smaller and powerless.

Most of all, think about why so many efforts to sort of deploy digital
cash or untraceability tools have essentially failed due to a failure of
nerve, a failure to go for the brass ring.

[e-gold-list] Re: IFGETD contract

2001-07-02 Thread Andrew McMeikan

Perhaps this might encourage e-gold to update their exchange rates on a
more regular basis (every hour?)

The big problem with Bamdex is it is stopping me from going home because I
am stuck to this computer watching the gold price and checking to see when
e-gold will update. Something automatic somewhere is needed...

I am also wondering how bamdex makes any money out of this setup?

cya,Andrew...

Right -- I think they do tend to change it a couple of times during
the day actually (or, maybe that's just what i've noticed the last
  few days)

e-gold usually changes their exchanges rates an avg. of 11 times a day.
Then there are times when e-gold's rates don't change for days at a time.

[e-gold-list] China and Gold

2001-06-30 Thread Andrew McMeikan

A while back was some rumors about the gold situation in China.

here is a link (registration required, but joecypher and a password of
cypherpunk, works ;)
http://biz.scmp.com/ZZZX15R7EOC.html

quick bit of interestJust over a week ago, as part of its ongoing
deregulation drive, the government began setting gold prices on a weekly
basis.

This replaced the previous policy of resetting prices every six months, a
system that had allowed large gaps between international and domestic
prices to develop and encouraged exports.

For the past 50 years, gold trading has been controlled strictly by the
central People's Bank of China, which requires gold producers to sell
their output to the PBOC at fixed prices.

Analysts estimate that with deregulation, annual demand in China could
triple to as much as 600 tonnes within the next few years, a volume that
could pressure producers, judging by the planned output of 175 tonnes for
this year.

Growing affluence in the richer coastal cities, which has driven up sales
of gold jewellery, has also squeezed demand for the metal.

2001-06-21 Thread Andrew McMeikan

Since it is impossible to *make* some one read a message (mail filters
always evolve) never mind act on it, the best that can be done is to *buy*
attention.

If you offer enough money to e-gold users you will get your moneys worth
of attention.

I suggest someone sets up a big list where everyone who wants to recieve
gold can stick their account number in, perhaps a bonus amount for
email/personal details.

If its not opt-in its not going to work.

Then make that 0.10 ounce spend to say 99 accounts (not too
expensive if you are trying to build up a list of
suckers^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hcustomers) offering free gold for their clicks.

If you build it they will come. Some of them any way. The rest will say
leave me alone as is their right. No one could possible object to someone
wanting their privacy could they?

account 188428 is more than happy to recieve 50Kg of gold. I don't
however promise to follow any link to claim it ;)

   cya, Andrew...

It won't happen until there is a way to reach e-gold users.

I shall have to remember that when you say reach or announce you do
 not
mean only get a message to but also make them read it and act on it.

Well I finally got around to dropping in on the Perth Mint.

after looking over the various bars and coins I ended up buying a gramms
of 99.99% gold (0.03 oz) in three little lumps.

I then found a slightly unpleasent surprise, precious metals in Australia
are now only GST exempt in they are coins or have the '' stamped on
them, so instead of paying 1% over spot I got lumped with a 10% tax on
top.

Still, pretty yellow lumps. Got to save up for one of the bars now.

Just thought I'd share the experience with everyone.

I am however thinking of keeping a couple of bars of lead in my garage, if
anyone wants to invest in lead I will not charge any agio (I doubt anyone
would even think of stealing it) and transaction fees will be small ;)
unfortunately buying lead incures GST but I will bail bars in if you ship

turn lead into gold.

[e-gold-list] e-gold promotional material required

2001-05-29 Thread Andrew McMeikan

Recently there has been a renewed push for an Individuals Constituency to
operate within the ICANN/DNSO/NC structure. This push was reinforced by a
recent vote withing the GA of the DNSO.

What that means for those who do not normally put up with the bickering
that surrounds internet politics, is that smaller internet people may
start to get a voice! Like everything else funding has a big effect on how
well things happen.

To help raise those funds a public ballance account has been created
(313216)

What is now needed is to get people to use e-gold ;)
Does anyone know of someway to get promotional material like e-gold
buttons/stickers (preferably ones that are or can be customised with an
acct#) fast?

The GA meeting is about to happen in Stockholm
http://www.icann.org/stockholm/

Since they are all an international bunch the idea of e-gold would
probably get a good reception with most

I note with interest that sponsors for the meeting are still needed ;)

 Greetings all GA members.

This is just to advise the population of the general assembly about a fund
set up to take donations for the up coming Individuals constituency.

At least 75 members of this list would like to see the IC take off, going on
some of the comments I suspect that number is really higher. If you want to
flame me for this please keep the noise off list, If you don't trust me to
hold this money for the purpose I've stated then don't send any money, this
post is for the info of those that will wish to support an IC. I realise
that the IC is not yet in existence so some may not want to fund it until
they can see better where their money goes, this is fine by me. I just
wanted those who are keen (like me ;) to be able to put some money up in
 good faith.

This basis of creation of this fund is detailed here:
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wg-review/message/495

as always there were some questions to be answered, they can be seen here:
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wg-review/message/501

rather than ask 101 questions here read those links first, they should cover
it. I do not claim this fund as the only way to get money into this cause,
but it may be an easy way for many and I would like everyone to have the
 opportunity to make a donation.

Hopefully those links explain it enough for everyone, the brief summary is I
will hand over control of this account to the official IC once established,
failing an official established IC it will go towards that effort (IDNO
looking like the default should nothing else get together)

I also would not like this to be taken as an IC not needing funding via
ICANN, the IC will be much pressed for expenses as it will not have the big
money behind it as some of the other constituencies do, this is just to help
and there is very little money in it so far.

The main links pertaining to this fund as detailed in the messages
referenced above are detailed again below for your convenience.
If you know of other groups that might have an interest in or desire to
donate towards the IC please distribute this information to them.

it could be happening even further out that I can't see it in which case
its working best!

Never assume that money velocity can be measured, some of it just can not
be seen.

MS seems to work pretty well, has anyone ever had a bad experience?

 Here's an interesting thing.

It is NOT TRUE that the e-gold server tracks ALL use, spends, of e-gold

Erich's MS server now does a LOT of spending of e-gold that e-gold
knows nothing about and never will -- in fact, I have often used it
as a privacy measure so that Jim can't look up my spends! (Just
 joking Jim! :))

 If A says to B "I want to be paid in e-gold, but I don't want e-gold
to know about it", A then simply opens an MS account, and gets paid
from one MS account to another.

http://www.egroups.com/group/goldenagents for globaly distributed
individual e-gold to local fiat currency exchangers (or Technocash,
Metalsavings, whatever) and vise-versa.

Personally I am a good cause (open source hardware/software ;)

[e-gold-list] Re: egold sale

2000-12-28 Thread Andrew McMeikan

one or more of the many Ponzi scams? It is not as if there was
much else (with the notable exception of the gambling sites) that
anyone could be doing to generate a large, periodic income in e-gold
in anxious need to be anonymously converted back to fiat money.

While I don't agree with much of what the US government does, I do agree
with much of what it is based upon. Namely, in this case, a person is
 innocent until proven guilty.

Circumstantial evidence doesn't hold up in any court of law (that isn't
 corrupt).

 Viking Coder

Carefull you just called the Australian government corrupt ;) We have this
wonderful law that allows assets to be frozen on suspicion then when found
innocent in court you are given 28 days to explain where all your money
came from. if you can not justify it, they take what seems to be
excessive then unfreeze the rest.

I wonder how successful they would be in tracking down all e-gold related
accounts and getting them frozen?
