[ECOLOG-L] Yorkshire formation plant fossils
Dr. Conrad Labandeira and I have completed the examination of over 4500 plant fossils from the Yorkshire Formation and their herbivore-caused damage. Our main sources for plant identification have been: Harris (5 volumes, spanning from 1961 to 1974), Watson and Sincock (1992), Givulescu (1998), and Cittert & Morgan (1999). We wonder if you may know of: 1. An up-to-date list of the currently accepted names for the botanical taxa in the Yorkshire Formation and 2. A full bibliography of the pertinent works for the Yorkshire Formation. 3. Any ecological studies on the Yorkshire biota that may involve insect herbivory or pollination. Please, feel free to reply directly to my email. Thanks for any assistance. Sincerely, Jorge Santiago-Blay bl...@si.edu
Re: [ECOLOG-L] a vision?
A zillion years ago, I attended a workshop on conservation biology here in the USA. There were three colleagues from Bhutan in attendance. With great humbleness, they discussed an idea that, if I understoods correctly, was common in their academic circles: *gross national happiness*. [ECOLOG-L] Ship passenger lists
Dear Ecol-Listers: I am trying to locate the precise day of arrival into the UK (possibly London) of an American scholar whose writings had evolutionary implications. Very likely, he (and perhaps his family) arrived in the UK on the second half of June 1908. With the arrival information, we will be likely to find the day of departure from the USA. Possibly he departed from New York City, NY or from Baltimore, Maryland. I just contacted our USA National Archives and was told to Google Archives in the UK. I used to think that there were records for ship departures (+ passengers) from the USA. Any idea of ways to find this type of information? Thank you. Sincerely, Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Bubble production as a way to calculate photosynthetic rate
Hello Ecolog-Listers: Centuries ago, Charles Bonnet reported that submerged plants produced bubbles in the presence of light. Now, we know the gas is oxygen and the process is photosynthesis. Do you know anyone who reported that before Bonnet? Calculating rate of photosynthesis by using the rate of bubble production is widely (?) used in American intro. biology courses. Do you know *since when* this exercise became popular? Is it used in other countries? If you know of a venue more for intro. biology teachers/high school teachers, etc. where this questions may be appropriate, please let me know. Some of us in this list may also be intro. bio. teachers. Apologies for cross-posting. Will take answers on my email (below). Thank you. Gratefully, Jorge Santiago-Blay blayjo...@gmail.com
[ECOLOG-L] Post 2009 textbooks and companion lab manuals on Mammalian Anatomy?
Hello Ecolog-Listers: Will take answers at blayjo...@gmail.com I have been looking for post 2009 textbooks and companion lab manuals on Mammalian Anatomy. Everything I have sen thus far is pretty heavy on systematics (and that is fine with me) but I need reseources that emphasize anatomy (of course, some physiology also welcomed). Resources that are somewhat biased towards humans are OK but human A and/or P only textbooks for Mammalian Anatomy is what I am trying to avoid. Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Jorge

Programs are listed by the amount of emails I received about them order. Of course, this list does *not* represent an endorsement; it is only a compilation. * * *Summary of computer-generated graphics programs* 1. *Adobe Illustrator* - Both R and Illustrator take time to know how to create quality figures “Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are probably the most powerful & commonly used programs for professional illustration, and many artists I know use both to create an image (i.e. creating an image in Illustrator and adding textures and special effects in Photoshop). However, they are quite expensive.” “I chose Illustrator over Inkscape because I didn't like the GUI for Inkscape on a Mac. Also, as a student Illustrator was cheap.” “I have this link that offers reviews for scientific graph software http://www.cyber-wit.com/Directory_Tech_Charting.htm And I think that a combination of Adobe suite products like Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator could meet the needs of scientific illustrations as well. Purchasing those two programs are about $1,300 to own and $50 a month to rent. http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/buying-guide.html 2. *Adobe PhotoShop (see above)* 3. *R - *R is also used for statistical analyses. “I would suggest R. It is a free ware, which means free of charge, and also powerful. R provides various kind of scientific figures. Please see the following links: http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/ and http://bm2.genes.nig.ac.jp/ . For editing, you can use Open Office >draw, Inkscape for refinement.” “For plotting and visualizing data its hard to beat R. For publication quality figures its worth learning the gglot2 package. powerful, tons of resources other on the r forums...and its free” 4. *Inkscape* “I've used Inkscape, a freely available vector illustration program that's very user friendly. It doesn't have as many features as Adobe Illustrator, but I've used it to make simple diagrams and illustrations (and from the screenshots page much more advanced illustrations are possible). You can quickly import and trace over photographs, convert sketches to vectors, manipulate lines, and draw from scratch (a digital pen is very handy).”

[ECOLOG-L] Need large (> 1,000 cases) educational (ideally in ecology) data set
Dear Colleagues: A former biology student of mine is now in a PhD program and is taking a statistical methods course. Unfortunately, the professor did not provide data sets, hence the student contacted her former professor (= me). The data set needed (ideally in EXCEL) must be/have: a. 1,000 (or more) cases (rows) large b. Have, at least, two ordinal variables, 2 nominal variables, and 2 ratio variables (if not ratios, then regular counts or measurements that can be changed into ratios). c. Be on some sort of educational topic (ideally, but not necessarily, in ecology). I have large data sets but not educational. Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors Dear Colleagues: Every year I teach a ("lecture" only, no labs) biodiversity course for non-science majors and, embarrassingly (for me), generally for most students it is a disaster in terms of learning, as reflected in exam scores, etc. Do any of you know of a biodiversity textbook, say 15-20 chapters long, written for non-science majors. Little by little, my own worksheets with illustrations are becoming the textbook but until then, I rather have students buy a used but decent textbook at their level. [ECOLOG-L] Methane a role in ozone layer destruction?
Dear Colleagues: Yesterday, a student in one of my courses asked me about the role, if any, methane gas in the destruction of the ozone layer. I gave the CFCs explanation and promised to look for additional information on methane. This site, http://www.theozonehole.com/ozonedestruction.htm (cced) seems to suggest that radicals from methane form in the stratosphere have a role, "Methane (CH4), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), nitrous oxide (N2O) and water are injected into the stratosphere through towering tropical cumulus clouds. These compounds are broken down by the ultraviolet radiation in the stratosphere. Byproducts of the breakdown of these chemicals form “radicals”—such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and chlorine monoxide (ClO)—that play an active role in ozone destruction. " Later on, the same site seems to attribute another role for methane: "Due to this catalytic cycle, one atom of Cl can destroy thousands of ozone molecules before it is passivated through reaction with NO2, methane or other substances." Could anyone provide illumination (e.g. are the statements about methane supported scientifically? [ECOLOG-L] A new one for me on the editorial side
A new one for me on the editorial side Dear Colleagues: Some 3-5 years ago, someone else and I submitted a paper that was accepted. I saw the version I assumed was sent to the editor and that was the end of the story. As far as I know from the first author, the paper was published without proofs. The only surprise to the first author and to me was the the second author (= me) was deleted. To me, the obvious solution would have been to contact the editor and request (maybe demand?) an erratum published on the next issue. I requested that to the first author but it was not done. I let it go. Now, the matter has resurfaced (some 3-5 years later) as the first author is submitting a paper to my journal and he is including that paper in the Lit. Cited with my name, as submitted (but not published). My first idea is to, as editor of my journal, tell the editor of the other journal to print the erratum (albeit late but better than never) and add a comment to the entry on the line of the paper indicating the author such and such (= me) was inadvertently omitted from the byline of the paper when originally published. But how if the editor of the other refuses to print the erratum? If you have any thought, please email them to me at blayjo...@gmail.com Apologies for potential duplicate emails. [ECOLOG-L] Trying to help a graduate student friend of mine in Puerto Rico
Trying to help a graduate student friend of mine in Puerto Rico Dear Colleagues: I am trying to help a friend of mine in PR. This friend is a graduate student at one of the universities in Puerto Rico, a nation recently affected by Hurricane Maria. Do know of emergency funds or fellowships for graduate students impacted by natural disasters such as Maria that can be received by a student? The fellowship this student has in Puerto Rico is non-transferable, so this person would have to find funding. The funds would be used to transfer to another school. FEMA does not offer assistance to students who have had their education disrupted. [ECOLOG-L] Recommended listservers all things teaching in college
Dear Colleagues: I am looking for listservers that emphasize all things teaching in college. If you have good personal experiences with helpful listservers in this subject, could you let me know ho to access them? Likewise, info on listservers to avoid (if any) will be appreciated. Right now, I am wondering whether video cameras are allowed in classrooms (e.g., to document student behavior while taking an exam)? That would diminish s/he vs. s/he says arguments. This is akin to sports instant replay videos to document potential cheating. If you have a constructive listserver suggestions, please email me directly. Gratefully, Jorge Jorge A. [ECOLOG-L] Request feedback for a great student
Dear Colleagues: One of the students taking my *Environmental Sciences* course posed the following question to me: "I desire a career studying the interdisciplinary (natural and/or social) causes and effects on ecosystems. For instance, I was very impressed by a video I saw recently depicting the environmental changes caused by the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone. Currently, I am looking for internships hoping that one of them will lead into gainful employment. What types of internship should I be looking for?" Jet or, in Spanish, azabache Dear Colleagues: I am trying to help a college in finding scientific papers (not only anecdotes) on the (alleged) benefits of jet (in Spanish) azabache for humans. [ECOLOG-L] Timing of decline of herbals and rise of botany
Dear Colleagues: I have come across the case of Hoghelande (1546/58-1614), an early botanist who is alleged to have taken a “crucial part in the establishment–more particularly the institutionalization–of botany as a respectable field of study within the medical faculty of Leiden.” Is this timing approximately coincidental with the decline of herbals as a source of reliable information re. medicinal botany?
