[ECOLOG-L] Yorkshire formation plant fossils

2012-07-05 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dr. Conrad Labandeira and I have completed the examination of over 4500
plant fossils from the Yorkshire Formation and their herbivore-caused
damage. Our main sources for plant identification have been: Harris (5
volumes, spanning from 1961 to 1974), Watson and Sincock (1992), Givulescu
(1998), and Cittert & Morgan (1999). We wonder if you may know of:

1. An up-to-date list of the currently accepted names for the botanical
taxa in the Yorkshire Formation and

2. A full bibliography of the pertinent works for the Yorkshire Formation.

3. Any ecological studies on the Yorkshire biota that may involve insect
herbivory or pollination.

Please, feel free to reply directly to my email. Thanks for any
assistance.

Sincerely,

Jorge Santiago-Blay

A zillion years ago, I attended a workshop on conservation biology here in

common in their academic circles: *gross national happiness*.

[ECOLOG-L] Ship passenger lists

2012-08-24 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecol-Listers:

I am trying to locate the precise day of arrival into the UK (possibly
London) of an American scholar whose writings had evolutionary
implications. Very likely, he (and perhaps his family) arrived in the UK
on the second half of June 1908. With the arrival information, we will be
likely to find the day of departure from the USA. Possibly he departed from
New York City, NY or from Baltimore, Maryland.

I just contacted our USA National Archives and was told to Google Archives
in the UK. I used to think that there were records for ship departures (+
passengers) from the USA. Any idea of ways to find this type of
information? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jorge

As per request of a few colleagues, here is a summary of the information on
computer-generated illustrations sent to me. Programs are listed by the
amount of emails I received about them order. Of course, this list does
*not* represent an endorsement; it is only a compilation.

* *

*Summary of computer-generated graphics programs*

1. *Adobe Illustrator* - Both R and Illustrator take time to know how to
create quality figures

“Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are probably the most powerful & commonly
used programs for professional illustration, and many artists I know use
both to create an image (i.e. creating an image in Illustrator and adding
textures and special effects in Photoshop). However, they are quite
expensive.”

“I chose Illustrator over Inkscape because I didn't like the GUI for
Inkscape on a Mac. Also, as a student Illustrator was cheap.”

“I have this link that offers reviews for scientific graph software

http://www.cyber-wit.com/Directory_Tech_Charting.htm

And I think that a combination of Adobe suite products like Photoshop and
Adobe Illustrator could meet the needs of scientific illustrations as
well. Purchasing those two programs are about $1,300 to own and $50 a month
to rent.

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/buying-guide.html

2. *Adobe PhotoShop (see above)*

3. *R - *R is also used for statistical analyses.

“I would suggest R. It is a free ware, which means free of charge, and also
powerful. R provides various kind of scientific figures. Please see the
following links: http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/ and
http://bm2.genes.nig.ac.jp/ . For editing, you can use Open Office >draw,
Inkscape for refinement.”

“For plotting and visualizing data its hard to beat R. For publication
quality figures its worth learning the gglot2 package. powerful, tons of
resources other on the r forums...and its free”

4. *Inkscape*

“I've used Inkscape, a freely available vector illustration program that's
very user friendly. It doesn't have as many features as Adobe Illustrator,
but I've used it to make simple diagrams and illustrations (and from the
screenshots page much more advanced illustrations are possible). You can
quickly import and trace over photographs, convert sketches to vectors,
manipulate lines, and draw from scratch (a digital pen is very handy).”

[ECOLOG-L] Request for help for a biological illustrator

Dear Colleagues:

I am trying to help a colleague, Dino Pulerà, who is a scientific
illustrator. He has illustrated a book and, unfortunately, many of
his copyrighted images are posted on a website – as I understand the
situation - without his permission. Here's a link to the
site with the posted images:

https://www.studyblue.com/notes/note/n/lab-3-shark-nervous-system/deck/14338345

Dino has already contacted a lawyer for assistance. He sent a cease and
desist letter a couple of times to the company, Study Blue, but the memos
were ignored. The lawyer said that if Dino wants to pursue this further
he would have to contact an attorney in California or Wisconsin because
that's where this company operates.

Has anyone had similar experiences? If so, how did you stop the
unauthorized use of your work and / or receive compensation? Can anyone
recommend a lawyer for this case? Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. If so, please contact Dino directly at d_pul...@hotmail.com

[ECOLOG-L] O2 levels

2017-01-24 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Paleonetters:

A colleague sent me a paleoclimatology query recently, as follows:

"All the fuss over 395 ppm or 398 ppm CO2, but not a word about what
happens to O2 and its increase or decline. If late K O2 was 30-34%, where
did it all go and is anyone looking at O2 over the last 10 MY for example
ad obviously if O2 drops to 15-18% what happens. Just wondering."

Any illumination welcomed directly to blayjo...@gmail.com

[ECOLOG-L] Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law?

2017-02-04 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Background follows.

In *The number of molts of lepidopterous larvae*, Dyar (1890) proposed a
simple relationship, in mathematics known as a geometric progression,
between the linear dimensions of hardened, or sclerotized, structures in
moth and butterfly larvae as they grow by molting during their
discontinuous development. This constant rate of size increase model, which has
become known as Dyar’s Rule or Dyar’s Law.

But who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Note, I have already
communicated with two experts on Dyar.

[ECOLOG-L] Need large (> 1,000 cases) educational (ideally in ecology) data set

Dear Colleagues:

A former biology student of mine is now in a PhD program and is taking a

data sets, hence the student contacted her former professor (= me). The
data set
needed (ideally in EXCEL) must be/have:

a. 1,000 (or more) cases (rows) large

b. Have, at least, two ordinal variables, 2 nominal variables, and 2 ratio
variables (if not ratios, then regular counts or measurements that can be
changed into ratios).

c. Be on some sort of educational topic (ideally, but not necessarily, in
ecology). I have large data sets but not educational.

If anyone can help or direct me to places where such data are available for

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for recommendations for botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere in biodiversity hot spots regions

Dear Colleagues:

As part of my research, I would like to visit botanical gardens/arboreta in

Ideally, the gardens/arboreta:

1. Located in the southern hemisphere.

2. Are old (say, at least 30 years) and have a high (identified via labels)
biodiversity (ideally worldwide but emphasizing the region in which they
are located).

3. Somehow associated with a university.

4. Have a very strong outreach/education mission.

5. Relatively easy to collect (in terms of bureaucratic paperwork).

Although I am well-familiarized with worldwide botanical gardens database,
I would prefer to receive recommendations (positive and negative) of likely
institutions that may fit my desiderata. If you have constructive

Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors

Dear Colleagues:

Every year I teach a ("lecture" only, no labs) biodiversity course for
non-science majors and, embarrassingly (for me), generally for most
students it is a disaster in terms of learning, as reflected in exam
scores, etc.

Do any of you know of a biodiversity textbook, say 15-20 chapters long,
written for non-science majors. Little by little, my own worksheets with
illustrations are becoming the textbook but until then, I rather have
students buy a used but decent textbook at their level. An example of what
I mean is the simple language in "Animals without Backbones".

Is there something like this for all biodiversity? If you have constructive
suggestions, please send them directly to me:

[ECOLOG-L] Methane a role in ozone layer destruction?

2017-05-16 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Yesterday, a student in one of my courses asked me about the role, if any,
methane gas in the destruction of the ozone layer. I gave the CFCs
explanation and promised to look for additional information on methane.
This site,

http://www.theozonehole.com/ozonedestruction.htm

(cced) seems to suggest that radicals from methane form in the stratosphere
have a role,

"Methane (CH4), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), nitrous oxide (N2O) and water
are injected into the stratosphere through towering tropical cumulus
clouds. These compounds are broken down by the ultraviolet radiation in the
stratosphere. Byproducts of the breakdown of these chemicals form
“radicals”—such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and chlorine monoxide (ClO)—that
play an active role in ozone destruction. "

Later on, the same site seems to attribute another role for methane:

"Due to this catalytic cycle, one atom of Cl can destroy thousands of ozone
molecules before it is passivated through reaction with NO2, methane or
other substances."

Could anyone provide illumination (e.g. are the statements about methane
supported scientifically? If "yes", what is its relative contibution of
methane compared to CFCs) or some constructive feedback directly to me?

[ECOLOG-L] Botanical patronymics - easy way to get them available?

2017-08-28 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Is there a web-based (ideally, easy to use), searchable reference one can
use to find plants named after people (= botanical patronymics)?

Background: I am trying to find whether there are plants families, genera,
or species named after 25 or so people who, as far as I can tell, where
*not* plant taxonomists or botanists. In my experience, that type of
information is usually collected in obituaries, particularly if the
deceased person was a taxonomist him/herself.

And, how can one know rapidly whether that the patronymic was given for the
person of interest? Imagine, what to do if the deceased person has a common
last name (e.g. in the USA, Smith)? Is there a source that says, such and
such taxon (name) was erected to honor such and such person?

Any constructive feedback, sent directly to my email, blayjo...@gmail.com ,
 is welcomed.

With gratefulness (and apologies for any cross-posting)

Collected papers of August Krogh (animal physiologist, late 19th century,
first half 20th century)? Patterns of citation.

Dear Colleagues:

Does anyone know of a published compilation of collected papers by the
famous Danish physiologist August Krogh (animal physiologist, late 19th
century, first half 20th century)?

A second question is whether anyone knows of citation patterns by
colleagues in the same field/time as Krogh? In other words, who they would
choose to cite? Who would they not mention? If mentioned, is it positive,
neutral, or negative?
If not, any paper addressing those issues would be appreciated. Of course,
as author and editor, for years I have sensed some obvious patterns but
have never quantified them. I am aware wars can disrupt some of these
patterns.

If you have constructive suggestions on either matter, could you send me an

we have now: no data.

[ECOLOG-L] A new one for me on the editorial side

2017-10-03 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
A new one for me on the editorial side

Dear Colleagues:

Some 3-5 years ago, someone else and I submitted a paper that was accepted.
I saw the version I assumed was sent to the editor and that was the end of
the story. As far as I know from the first author, the paper was published
without proofs. The only surprise to the first author and to me was the the
second author (= me) was deleted.

To me, the obvious solution would have been to contact the editor and
request (maybe demand?) an erratum published on the next issue. I requested
that to the first author but it was not done. I let it go. Now, the matter
has resurfaced (some 3-5 years later) as the first author is submitting a
paper to my journal and he is including that paper in the Lit. Cited with
my name, as submitted (but not published). My first idea is to, as editor
of my journal, tell the editor of the other journal to print the erratum
(albeit late but better than never) and add a comment to the entry on the
line of the paper indicating the author such and such (= me) was
inadvertently omitted from the byline of the paper when originally
published. But how if the editor of the other refuses to print the erratum?
If you have any thought, please email them to me at

[ECOLOG-L] Tax id when receiving packages with specimens for scientific study internationally?

2017-11-29 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Tax id when receiving packages with specimens for scientific study
internationally?

Dear Colleagues:

This one is new to me. Someone from Venezuela hopes to send a small sample
of geological specimens via a fast courier. The person says the courier
company needs a tax id number and that such request is standard protocol by
the courier companies. This one is new to me in over 30 years connected
with museums.

If you have any constructive feedback, please send it directly to me:

blayjo...@gmail.com

Apologies for possible duplicate emails.

Sincerely,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Request recommendations on taxonomists of "fish lice", trematodes, leeches, and nematodes

2017-12-06 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Request recommendations on taxonomists of "fish lice", trematodes, leeches,
and nematodes

Dear Colleagues:

I am collaborating with two colleagues on a project pertaining to external
fish parasites from southeastern USA. We are looking for recommendations of
experienced, competent, and easy going colleagues with *taxonimic*
expertise on trematodes, "fish lice", leeches, and/or nematodes.Any strong
recommendation would be welcomed (as well as an indication of who to avoid,
since both considerations are important).

If you have constructive feedback, please, email it to me directly:

blayjo...@gmail.com

Apologies for any duplicate emails.

Gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for reviewers for a historic epidemiological paper on the 1918 "Spanish" flu

2017-12-08 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Hello:

Recently, I received a paper on the epidemiology of the 1918 "Spanish" flu
for publication in *LEB*, a peer-reviewed scientific journal for which I
serve as editor. Besides the potential reviewers the author suggested, I
wish to know if I may have recommendations (names and emails) of a few
colleagues to whom I may send this paper. I have already checked the web
but do not know any of the colleagues in that field.

If anyone has constructive suggestions, please email me directly:
blayjo...@gmail.com

Apologies for potential duplicate emails.

Gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Timing of decline of herbals and rise of botany

2017-12-10 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

I have come across the case of Hoghelande (1546/58-1614), an early botanist
who is alleged to have taken a “crucial part in the establishment–more
particularly the institutionalization–of botany as a respectable field of
study within the medical faculty of Leiden.” Is this timing approximately
coincidental with the decline of herbals as a source of reliable
information re. medicinal botany? If true, does anyone know exact what
Hoghelande did to deserve such credit?

If you have a constructive reply, please contact me directly:

Gratefully,
