[Elecraft] K2 #5324 Past Stage 2
Hi All I have just finished testing 5324 up to stage 2 and all working very well, seems hot Rx on 40m, Found the setting of L34 broad but seems to peek up just about ¼ to ½ of a turn down, much more and the background noise comes up. Other than that no problems im glad to say so off to start stage 3 73 Paul M0BMN -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. [Elecraft] K1 stability
Hi everyone, I'm trying to improve the frequency stability of my K1, but I'm not sure if I'm sort of at the limit here or not. I'm evaluating the radio's capabilities for use as a 10-meter beacon, and have been running it into a dummy load for a while, controlled by an external PIC based controller. I've rewound L1 to move the tuning range up to where I want it, and replaced C2 to give me just a narrow tuning range. I'm using an NP0 capacitor for C2 so it should have good temperature stability. What I've found is that the frequency seems to drift upwards over the course of 2 or 3 days, going up 100 or so Hz. The other strange thing I found was that the power out also drifted upwards. I had the radio set for 2.0 watts and after a day, it was running 4.5 watts out, which is as high as it goes on 10 meters. The power out isn't my main concern right now though, 4.5 watts will be fine. I know the specs say 200 Hz / hour but I'm really hoping to see less than 100 Hz per month, kind of thing. Is there any way to tighten-up the frequency stability even further? Re: [Elecraft] Update on Build of K2 #5324
Hi That depends on the serial number. If the older K2 is below 3000 and has not had the A to B mods installed then then the front panel, control board and RF board are not interchangeable. If both K2 are above 3000 then you are fine. [Elecraft] Dayton
I'm looking into actually attending Dayton for the first time ever. Will there be many folks from the reflector there this year? 73, Julius n2wn Julius, you have no idea! Look for a crowd. There usually is a fairly decent size crowd around the Elecraft booth. In addition to Eric and Wayne, Don, W3FPR, the grand poobah of remote troubleshooting and Elmering is usually there. If you are really a tried and true Elecrafter, order a shirt through them that has your rigs serial number on it. We are an odd lot, and I would not want it any other way. I'll be there. I rarely call CQ - especially when running QRP. But sometimes, a fella has to do what a fella has to do. Fired up the K1 on 20 meters, dialed up 14040 (or was it 14060 - can't recall) and called CQ. Got an answer from a station in NM which sure made me smile (I love NM). He was running an Argo 509 and we exchanged 449 sig reports. Re: [Elecraft] Dayton
I will be there Julius, and will have an indoor booth this year. Don't know the booth number yet. I will have a number of kits there, including several wattmeters (QRP and otherwise), my remote base station control hardware and software and (hopefully) a new microprocessor/DDS based panadapter kit that will work with any IF frequency. It will be connected to my K2. All the kits are aimed at Elecraft style builders except the panadapter, which will be mostly SMD. My LP-100 wattmeter kit, which is featured in the current issue of QEX, will be featured at the booth, and will have a new killer feature that no wattmeter currently on the market has. I'm very excited about Dayton this year ;-) You can see more info on my projects on my website, www.telepostinc.com 73, Larry N8LP J F wrote: I'm looking into actually attending Dayton for the first time ever. I know the specs say 200 Hz / hour but I'm really hoping to see less than 100 Hz per month, kind of thing Pardon me for asking, but is this a realizable goal (3 ppm/month at 28 MHz over an unspecified temperature range) for the K1 frequency system which consists of a crystal hetrodyne oscillator, crystal product detector/transmit mixer oscillators, and LC VFO, none of which are temperature controlled or compensated? Would it be realizable for your K2? Would it even be realizable for a FT-1000?? Even commercial DDS/PLL rigs don't come close without some sort of TXCO. Granted, none of them are using an LC VFO, but they aren't rock-bound either. Re: [Elecraft] Mail incorrectly bounced as SPAM??
Hi Art, It has nothing to do with your email's content. Someone who is also using the same send mail server as you at your ISP is spewing SPAM onto the Internet. The sorbs or bl.csma.biz anti spam server has temporarily blacklisted all email from your server to protect everyone from overload. This is a frequent occurrence these days, unfortunately. QTH.net, our host for the Elecraft email list, uses this service and several others to avoid overload of their servers when a SPAM attack occurs. Its the only way they can keep regular traffic flowing in the face of the rising tide of SPAM emails. The block is usually lifted in a day or two as the spam sent via your ISPs mail server subsides. (It is usually coming from an unsuspecting user with an infected PC...) You might want to contact the guys at your ISP and let them know what has happened and include a copy of the bounce message. They might be able to speed the unblocking. In the mean time, if you have an account on a different ISP, try sending from it. If you continue to have problems posting we can also repost for you. Re: [Elecraft] K1, calling CQ, 2x QRP QSO.
A lot of people nowadays don't understand HF propagation. One MUST remember that the propagation programs are not necessarily correct! Many times bands are really open, but there isn't any activity. A lot of folks make a quick check, listen a minute or two and assume the band is dead. ALWAYS listen and ALWAYS call a few CQ's. You never know! A classic example of this is assuming 10,12,15 meters are beyond help. this part of the sunspot cycle. Many times it will be dead for East-West paths but open for North South paths, especially to South America from the USA. This is the great advantage of beacons in various places on 20-10 meters. Also weird anomalies will exist in propagation no computer program will predict. 73, Sandy W5TVW - Original Message - From: Darwin, Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, January 30, 2006 9:31 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K1, calling CQ, 2x QRP QSO. | I rarely call CQ - especially when running QRP. The test test suggests a contest CQ. Probably from a automatic keyer or a contest logging program. Some contesters just letem rip until they hear a response through the keying. [Elecraft] firmware update?
Hi all, I'm new to this list and looking into building my own K2. This evening I was browsing the European distributor's online shop as I was getting ready to order the parts I thought were necessary. One of the options offered on the page is the firmware update, valued at 45,00 EUR. Is this only necessary for older K2 models or is it necessary to order this upgrade even with a brand new kit? Re: [Elecraft] Off topic question (On Topic Answer)
CQ World Wide 160m Contest was this past weekend from Z on Saturday until 1259Z on Sunday. There are contests EVERY weekend of some sort or another. Some are very specific to a particular mode or band or even geographical region. The one listed above was ONLY on 160m and ONLY CW. While there were a few stations to be heard in the middle of the day the majority of the signals on 160m propagate best during the night due to less D-layer attenuation. I noticed many signals from about 5 PM local time all through the whole night and tapering off around 7:30 AM local time after local sunrise. I worked about 9-1/2 hours of the contest myself, using K2 S/N 4786 at 5W and a Carolina Windom 160. My QTH is in Allentown, PA and I was able to work stations as far west as Hawaii and as far east as Portugal The Azores. I did hear quite a few Europeans, especially on Sunday late-afternoon and early-evening, however I didn't have the patience to work them, although I had in the past worked some and will try again. I always thought that 100W was QRP on 160m, but after trying out my K2 about 1 year ago I'm hooked on 160m QRP! I'm also amazed how well such a simple station manages to make so many Q's! I'm anxious to try an inverted-L for next season and maybe a K9AY Array for Rx (to get best use of my K2 options). Typically CQ callsign TEST is not that there are lots of stations testing their equipment, but test is short for contest and they leave it up to the person on the Rx end to figure out which contest it is. Ken Newman, N2CQ, puts out a weekly email on this reflector and others with the list of contests for the upcoming several weeks. This list includes weblinks for rules and has a note about whether the contest has a QRP category or not. Nice job, Ken! Re: [Elecraft] firmware update?
Hi All new Elecraft products will have the latest firmware in effect at the time. The upgrade is so people with older K2's can add the newest features if they want. In some cases when adding an option module an older K2 will require the upgrade to make the option function. Don't worry you will get the latest firmware included with your K2 and any options you may order at the same time. Re: [Elecraft] K1, calling CQ, 2x QRP QSO.
When I was testing my KPA-100 to see how hot the heat sink would get during contest level CQ'ing and didn't yet have my 300W dummy load I set up the K2 with an automated CQ on the low end of 10M around 28.013.I figured it was a safe time of day on a dead band that wouldn't bother too many people (and not bother me with having to stop my tests to have an actual QSO). It was about 8AM ET and I had been testing for about an hour when a VP8 (who also happened to be using a K2/100) answered one of my calls. So the dead band came alive long enough to get me a new country on 10M at the bottom of the solar cycle. I hear people say that you need to listen more than CQ when you are QRP. But believe me...there are a bunch of us people who's ear's perk up when we hear a faint CQ in the noise. The weak signal is the one that attracts my attention although I have to admit to a slight letdown when a K1 with a K1 is not the VU7 I'd been hoping for. Good luck and keep CQing!Don't be afraid to get on at 3AM on 15M and call CQ. You just might find a kindred spirit who is not able to sleep either and have a great QSO. No charge ever, just help. 2. If anyone in the NW San Antonio area is interested in forming an Elecraft Users Group to meet for breakfast and swap lies, please also contact me and I will try to arrange same. (Amateurs with other rigs, wannabies, and others also most welcome.) Thanks. After all, we Hams were given the shortwaves to play in because all the experts with decades of on-air experience knew what we couldn't get out of our own backyards on those frequencies. It's significant to me that it was only a few of the Hams who did the work to open the shortwaves, and then to prove that even daylight DX was possible on the right frequencies. The majority of the Hams stubbornly hung around the longest wavelengths they could because they knew what the experts told them. The moral of the story is that if you want to experience something exciting and new, don't travel with the crowd. I couldn't even work one that was 60+db over 9 with my K2 at 15 watts. I ran the whole contest with a 9 year old Alinco dx70. My antenna is a comprimise for 160. A 80/40/30 dipole from an SK W9INN. It's swr on 160 without a tuner is only 3 to 1 and it is only 15 feet above ground so I was pleased to be able to work anyone. I couldn't work everything I heard. Just don't have the real-estate for something better. Unless there is a secret vertical I don't know about yet. I managed 50 Q's including Alaska (first on any band) and Hawaii. The most stations I worked before in one sitting was 28. Hmmm that was the ARRL 160 contest. And that was my first time on 160. I think 160 meters may be a fine band, just under utilized.
