I was running the K2 at 100 watts and had just worked a station in the midwest with strong sigs both ways. I think we're too far apart for ground wave and short skip "NVIS" propagation wasn't working well. You were solid copy but definitely very, very weak: almost the weakest signal I heard check in. I'm blessed with a very low noise level. The background on 40 is usually a quiet sizzle that doesn't even light up the first bar on the "S" meter. Your signal occasionally made the first bar flicker, where others were lighting up the bargraph to S9 or so. Propagation is very interesting at this point in the Sunspot cycle, despite what those who grumble about preparing for the next sunspot cycle say. I'd like to check in more often to see how this works over time, but my schedule usually doesn't permit it. But when I can I'll be there. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 27th & 28th, 2006
Good Evening Folks, The twenty meter net had a little noise caused by a foreign station jamming someone else. Next week I will move further afield. I will announce the offset before I run the net but please look further from 14050 kHz than normal for ECN/20. I'll not be close to 14050 kHz if these folks keep up their music broadcasts. Either higher or lower but I will try to find a quieter frequency. Forty meters was very nice in comparison. I simply had to fight a little QSB and the normal thunderstorm caused QRN. Not a problem, I've grown accustomed to that! I am not sure about Ron though. He is normally much stronger here. A note to you folks who don't know our local geography. Ron lives in Forest Grove. I live north of him about fifteen miles but about 1600 feet higher in elevation. There are no intervening mountains like there are for the folks in Hillsboro, Beaverton, Portland, or Gresham. He should be strong to me via ground wave. I assume he was using his KX1 but may be fiddling with antennas. Pete relayed him into me from Southern California!! Ron may have been skipping right over my home above Buxton. I'll await the rest of the story ;) Sounds like most folks had a good weekend and their weather is cooler than mine. I got a bunch of wood cut and stacked into my woodshed. If we have a very mild winter I am ready. I'll double the amount of wood I've got stacked to be prepared for a harsh one. The decked wood is in great shape; now for me to reach that state! A few hours each day and it will get done. Kevin the ant not Kevin the grasshopper. Dinner was a couple of chorizo burritos. I was stuffed so I gave some of the filling to Sam. He ate all I gave him. The green peppers, onions, even the jalapenos were gone when I picked up his dish! I think he likes the chorizo filling :) I'll keep him as fat as I can for another year with this kind of dinner. I felt very relaxed after dinner so the second net was more fun. The lack of jamming was a great pleasure but hearing you all was best. Please stop by whenever you have the time. Ric has me wanting to travel. I'd love to go to Ontario and work on his hardwood floor. I've done it before out of bird's eye maple so I have a little experience. I'm not sure what type of wood he's using but it would be fun to put in another hardwood floor. Mine came out of a church which had been condemned for a bearing wall failure. We had only a week to take out the pews and the floor before they knocked it down. I was exhausted by the time we were done since we were working 18 hour days but we had quite a few square feet of very nice wood on our hands. We sold most of it and I put some in my living room in Wisconsin. The lists ==> On 14050.50 kHz at 2300z: W6ZH - Pete - CA - K2 5138 W0SZ - Steve - CO - K2 - 4088 N8YO - Mike - MI - K2 - 5644 QNI #5! Now I'd better get the rest of my chores done so I can get to bed. Tomorrow I'll not be up at 3 AM but rather a bit later. The IR images came out great. Now to write reports and get the system in shape for the second round of SBIR. We may even get a chance to rest a bit before we do more field work. I'd like to get the system a bit more refined and have the software in better shape. I am glad it worked so well but there is much room for improvement. Hopefully we'll be granted second round funding so that work can take place. Otherwise I'll have a lot more time to work on my house and send out an updated version of my resume ;) Either way Winter will happen so I'd better get ready. Until next week: stay well, 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] ECN on 20 Preliminary report
While running the Elecraft CW Net on 20 meters, 14050.50 kHz, I was unable to copy at least two prospective callers. The first one faded into the music and the second one was sending my call over and over. There was jamming again but it was not specifically aimed at us. At first I thought it was auroral propagation but then I started to hear it better. There was music in it. Next week I will try moving further away to avoid this if it is still occuring. To the person sending my call sign: I know KD5ONS, I send it a lot. I suggest you send your call over and over so I can copy it through the deep QSB. If you send my call we'll never connect. To the other op: such is life; I was not able to dig you out. I do believe it was K2HYD but could not confirm it. I got a K2 and then a D. Ray fits the pattern but normally will respond to any sort of query about him in the affirmative. Conditions were tough due to the jamming signal so I'll work out a better plan for next week. See you in less than 30 minutes. Kevin. KD5ONS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] wherefore art thou, K3?
Doug: Discussions about a prospective K3 have always struck me as a bit curious. I'm not sure just what it is that people are looking for. I get the impression that you're talking about more operational features rather than improved engineering characteristics. As you note, there are lots of wish lists of features, but probably not enough overlap among the lists to create a market for a rig with a single list of extra features for which all the wishers are willing to pay an extra $1200. The closest you come to specifying how a K3 might differ from a K2 is that a K3 would be two K2s in a common box, and a bit of hardware to make them run smoothly in concert. Rather than come up with something like that, maybe the N4PY strategy is a better solution for the serious contester. Buy two K2s and tack them together with a "contest box" containing the interfacing electronics. If there are that many people looking to run two K2s simultaneously, perhaps Elecraft could develop a "contest box" accessory specifically for that purpose. I would also comment that those $10K radios tend to be a human factors nightmare. There are so many features that human cognition is literally overwhelmed by all the possibilities. I suspect that the serious contester using one of these fancy rigs identifies (probably unconscioiusly) the features actually needed (with perception of what is needed varying among operators) for contest operating, arranges things (with perhaps some very tricky programming ahead of time) to bring those few needed features to the fore, and ignores everything else. As you mentioned, SDRs are the wave of the future, but for "go for blood" contesting, they have not yet arrived. From that standpoint, it looks like a possible mod for the K2 would be for Elecraft to make the internals a bit more accessible to computer interaction, and let the aftermarket take care of the software. 73, Steve AA4AK So armed with 6 years of history, let's see what the prospects might be for a K3. First, what would be different than the K2? I've seen lots of "wish lists" but mostly they would be a K2 Mark II not really strategic thinking launched by a long range vision. And, probably more importantly, what would be the target market? If the loaded K2 is $1800 (kit), I am thinking that an "upgraded" (whatever that might be) K3 would at least be $3000 putting it into direct competition with these other radios in terms of price. ...And what would the "selling feature" be for a K3 compared to these other radios (remember, we are talking in terms of marketing). Clearly, not price. So just what would the motivation be for Elecraft to come out with a K3? I don't know! I think it would be neat to "smoothly" be able to conjoin a pair of K2's (either externally or within a single box). Some say N4PY and N1MM can effectively do that. When directly asked about such a feature, the "boyz" will even direct one to N4PY (at least they used to). But would that be a K3? Maybe. I think the dream of a K3 is something necessary to the group. I think the reality might be something different. RE: [Elecraft] RE: How does K2 NB work?
The noise blanker works extremely well on repetitious, high-amplitude pulse type noise such as that put out by cheap lamp dimmers, auto ignition, etc. The dimmers are more of a nemesis on the lower frequency bands were auto ignition is more of a problem on the higher frequency bands. Basically, the blanker works by noting the interval of a train of pulses and then turning off (blanking) the signal path for an instant when the each pulse occurs. That effectively makes the pulses disappear. Having used my K2 in areas where I could not get away from those cheap lamp dimmers, it made the difference between hearing a roar of S9+ noise to having the background drop to an S1 or S2 level of typical band QRN. The blanker can't do much of anything if the noise does not consist of a train of high-amplitude pulses. Typical noises it can't handle are the hash from motor commutators, the frying sounds one sometimes gets from leaky power line insulators, etc. But it's FB on "popping" arcs that sometimes occur on power lines and anything else that is high-amplitude and repetitious. Even so, there is a downside to any noise blanker. It is punching holes in the signal path. They are too short to hear, so the noise just goes away. But that action of switching the I.F. signal path off then on again produces frequency "mixing", just like any frequency converter or "mixer". As a result, various frequencies in the I.F. path might produce mixing products that appear as spurious signals or other noise! That's why Elecraft recommends you turn the blanker OFF when you don't need it. Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] KBT1?
Alan, I believe all these were addressed long ago. The maximum battery size is 0.56 inches (14.2mm). I don't know if all battery manufacturers conform to the standard AA size, but I have not had any problem with AA Rechargable batteries (NiMH) I have purchased recently ranging from 1200 mAHr to 2300 mAHr in any devices I use them in. Check the battery physical size for any that you might consider purchasing. There is a foam ring that fits around the speaker magnet, and as far as I know the speaker is not loose with this ring installed. The batteries must fit securely in the case, and may be difficult for some to remove, I have not encountered any difficulties. If anyone has difficulty removing the batteries, I can suggest laying a piece of string or ribbon under the batteries before they are inserted. This is easily implemented by the user if desired. There is no battery connector, the battery pack is wired directly to the K1. There is a disconnect switch. Some folks wanted to have a disconnect point, and certainly one could be installed by the end user if desired, but it is not supplied by Elecraft. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > >From last reading of the archives these were the issues left with no > resolution > ---adding connector for the battery pack disconnect? [Elecraft] wherefore art thou, K3?
Wherefore at thou, K3? I first "discovered" Elecraft after the great product review in QST (March 2000). Since then, I have been faithfully reading the email discussion list; it is a great source of information, with a couple obvious (and taken-for-granted) stars. After several months of reading, and being a die-hard contester (qrp contester since 1986 since the big Multi/Multi I used to operate at went SK), I naturally saw "room for improvement" in the K2. I liked the price and I figured that I could buy two K2's for less than some other contest radio and have the versatility equal to or surpassing the expensive whiz-bang contest radios out there…not to mention a (at the time) "best" rating on the front end (IMD DR3 at 5kc, IP3, etc). I also wondered, "If this Elecraft company is so great…and contesters are fanatics at having the best in terms of performance, I bet a K3 is around the corner." I asked around, but nobody had any insight…or they were not talking. It's now been 6 years. Other Elecraft qrp/tiny/portable rigs (and gadgets) have been brought to market…all filling a tiny niche market. I have seen inquires about a K3 dozens and dozens of time and no real reply from "the boyz" in Aptos other than, "What K3?" I think that I finally believe them. I was very surprised at the 1500 watt output amp shown at Dayton, 2006. It is very pricey (and not yet available…and no updates that I have seen…and I look hard!). It too fills (will fill) a niche market….probably one close to my heart (contesting), but at the very high end. Maybe there are broader markets (beyond ham radio) involved here. So…armed with 6 years of history, let's see what the prospects might be for a K3. First, what would be different than the K2? I've seen lots of "wish lists" but mostly they would be a K2 Mark II…not really strategic thinking launched by a long range vision. And, probably more importantly, what would be the target market? Right now, a "loaded" K2 (with tuner and amp, etc.) is, what…$1800 or so…in kit form. What else is out there for the masses? Kenwood TS2000…less money. Yaesu…lots of models, less money. Icom "baby" rigs…less money. So marketing a "new and improved" rig according to dollars (to compete with these radios) probably should not be a goal for Elecraft. Let's move upscale. Yaesu FT2000…at least $3K. Icom 756 Pro III…at least $3K. These are very slick radios for the masses that have money to spend and the rigs have lots and lots of features. I won't attempt to compare feature for feature, because "each to his own." If the loaded K2 is $1800 (kit), I am thinking that an "upgraded" (whatever that might be) K3 would at least be $3000…putting it into direct competition with these other radios in terms of price. And I bet you that these folks really are more appliance operators than the current set of K2 owners or at least probably are not that interested (skill being assumed to be present) in spending at least 40 hours (likely more) building a "K3." And what would the "selling feature" be for a K3 compared to these other radios (remember, we are talking in terms of marketing). Clearly, not price. Of course, I might be completely wrong here. Eric and Wayne might not care at all about money and would develop a K3 just for love (is anyone not laughing at this?). Let's see…price of the K2 goes up $30 and the list responds with complaints. What does this tell us? First, it tells us that Eric and Wayne are not quite as philanthropic as Bill and Melinda Gates or Warren Buffet. Second, they probably don't want to market a K3 to "these people" who complain about $30. Just how long has the K2 been $599 anyway? Should they move upscale even more? Icom 7800 and FT9000 in the $10k to $12k class. Hmmm. Maybe…if they are looking to undercut that market based on price. But wait….The FT9000 Contest is "only" $5000. Not much wiggle room then. And the TT Orion (of disputed reputation) is over $4k (even tighter margin). And speaking of SDRs…how about Flex Radio…that price is a steal! Yes, currently a poor performer on cw if you love QSK, but it will be there in a year (of course, its price will be at two tiers…or that is the rumor….at $3000 range and at $10k range, depending on features). Honestly, I don't see Elecraft wanting to compete in this league; from the comments posted, it doesn't seem like that is what Aptos is all about. I would love to be proven wrong de Doug KR2Q K2/5285
[Elecraft] Accidental K2 Reset?
Regarding the individual who did the K2 reset: What was he trying to do when he did it? Per the K2 manual, you need to hold down the 4,5,& 6 keys while turning on the rig. That sequence doesn't seem to be something someone would normally do when turning on the rig. Not being accusatory, I'm just curious. 72 de N8PVZ ---bernie __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Elecraft] K2 DC Ripple Requirements?
What is the maximum ripple that the K2 can have on the DC power? What would be a recommended value? 10%? 1%? 0.01%? Just to be sure that I am applying theory correctly: >From the 2001 ARRL Handbook page 11.12 the formula for ripple on a capacitor input filter is listed as: C x E = I x t where C = the capacitance in microfarads, E = the peak to peak ripple voltage, I = the load current in milliampres, t = the time between half cycles of the rectified waveform in milliseconds. Is the percentage of ripple simply the peak to peak ripple voltage (E from the above equation) divided by the power supply output voltage times 100? RE: [Elecraft] RE: How does K2 NB work?
A blanket "It doesn't. Don't waste your time--" isn't really a good thing to say at this time. #1, it DOES work on many types of impulse noise. If you are looking to eliminate atmospheric static noise (QRN) then yes, it doesn't work. Pulse type ignition noise from vehicles passing your location, or running near you, it does an excellent job of removing. Also, much of the power line noise caused by leaky/cracked insulators and bad grounds on your nearby power lines are usually effectively removed by the KNB2. This is what the KNB2 was designed to do, and it is actually better at this job than the NB in my IC-706MKIIG and other rigs I have had in the past. Again, if you are trying to eliminate QRN, there isn't anything available in ANY rig that I know of that will do that. Another thing to consider -- any time the noise blanker is ON, it will cause distortion in the received audio of the station you are listening to if there is a reasonably strong signal within 5 to 10 KHz of the signal you are trying to receive. This occurs with ANY noise blanker, not just the KNB2.
