Ben,

The ratings are conservative, so they can be mounted right down on the
board, but there is no harm in leaving a small gap - EXCEPT for the one
mounted on the bottom of the board - that one must go right down to the
board for physical clearance reasons.

[Elecraft] K2 AGC - magic?

2006-11-08 Thread Darwin, Keith
There's something about the K2 that I haven't figured out yet. When I
listen to my 830s, 2B or the R4A, Omni V or other rigs I've owned, I
find their AGC to be very aggressive (Esp. the 2B). When a signal hits,
the AGC really drops the gain and when the signal is gone, the gain goes
way up. This creates a very high background noise level significantly
reducing the long-term apparent S/N ratio.

What I hear with the K2 is different. Background noise is lower, giving
the false impression of reduced sensitivity. Signals pop out of the
quiet background. I think I'm hearing more dynamic range in the audio
output. Loud signals are actually louder than quieter ones. With my
other rigs, the only diff between a strong and weak signal is S/N ratio.
With the K2, the recovered audio volume level is also a bit different.

Am I hearing things? Were these effects on purpose? It makes for a
very smooth operating radio that produces far less listener fatigue than
other rigs.

I operated for 1 hour in a Straight Key Sprint (or stroll as it may be)
last night using the 830s. I was happy to turn the rig off when
quitting time came around. My ears felt assaulted with the static, 850
Hz CW tone and harsh sounding sidetone. And the 830s is considered one
of the great sounding rigs.

[Elecraft] WM1 Wattmeter and AT1

2006-11-08 Thread Siu Johnny

Hi Group,

While I have already got a very nice LP100 from Larry, WM1 could be good
for portable use. From reading the manual, it should be able to link with
computer. Will there be any linking cable supplied by the kit to link WM1
with the PC? Where can I down load the program for the control of the WM1?

I am also interested in the AT1 step-by-step attenuator. The shipping
weight of it seems fairly heavy. It seems that it just consists of a few
resistors. While the AT1 is so heavy?

Could anyone enlighten me?

RE: [Elecraft] KPA1500, KPA800 rollout delay

2006-11-08 Thread Lou Laderman
Here's what I got from Elecraft last May. This may change, as this was some
time back.

The KPA 800 is a single box amplifier with an internal custom designed 60V
switching power supply. It weighs approximately 36 lbs. Dimensions are 16.5w
x 15.5d x 7h.

The KPA1500 uses two enclosures. The main desktop RF deck is the same size as
the KPA800. The power supply enclosure is approximately 4 high and is the same
depth and width as the main unit. It can sit under the main enclosure or under
your operating table. The KPA1500 easily makes 1500W+ on 160M - 10M. We also
plan for it to cover 6M with lower power.
(Approximately 400W). The main RF box weighs about 40 lbs and the power
 supply box about 15 lbs.

Here is a short list of additional features:

 Full Break-In Silent Diode T/R
 Microprocessor Controlled
 Auto Band Switching (RF Sensing)
 Built In Auto-Tuner. Matches 3:1 at 1500W
SO2R ready. Two Rig Inputs / Two Antenna Outputs (2nd rig routes to
alternate antenna)
RS-232 Port for remote control and firmware downloadable updates.
 Key-In / Key-Out sequencing for older rigs
Custom Designed witching Power Supply (RF Quiet)

The assembled version of the KPA1500 should sell for about $5,900; The KPA800
about $3,900. The kit versions for these should be around $300-500 less. (These
are not final prices and may vary several hundred dollars.) We will
pre-assemble the power supplies and the internal RF cards on the kits.

[Elecraft] K2 vs FT1000D

2006-11-08 Thread J F
Hi Chris,

Just outta curiosity, what does a tricked out Yaesu
cost versus the K2? It's not a truly apples to apples
comparison, but it gives one a feel for the value.

The first place I put my effort is in the antennas,
assuming you have a decent base rig. I'm betting, at
least on QRP, the big difference in scores will be due
to antennas and a second radio...

Sorry we didn't QSO, maybe I'll catch you in the CQ WW

Joe,

To generalize - 'roofing filter' would be placed right after the first mixer
for best effectiveness to strip off extraneous mixing products.

The K2 is a single conversion design and the IF filter is placed right after
the first mixer (there is a post-mixer amp there for good dynamic range) -
so it serves both as the IF filter and the 'roofing filter'.

In other words, yes a roofing filter 'does not compute' for a single

[Elecraft] How about a KS (SSB)?

2006-11-08 Thread Darwin, Keith
I have a buddy interested in a K2. He wasn't until I loaned him mine
while I was on vacation. He was luke-warm before he borrowed the rig.
He borrowed, he listened, loved the receiver and is considering a
purchase. Sweet. But he's mostly an SSB op and stumbles a bit at the
mixed reviews of the K2 on SSB.

How about a K-series rig optimized for SSB? Start with a K2 and do a
few mods ...

  - Turn the Keyer speed pot into an IF shift pot.
  - Turn the Power pot into a mic gain pot.
  - PO would be a menu selection.
  - Keyer speed would be a menu selection.
  - Choice of narrow or wide Xmit Xtal filters (switchable? Build-time
choice?).
  - New variable RX Xtal filter optimized for SSB bandwidths.
  - Optional fixed narrow CW filter.
  - Optional speech processor, menu controlled.
  - Optional DSP continues to provide notch NR.

Base price of, say $729?

By catering to the SSB crowd, you'd be able to add K4 sales without
losing K2 sales. By basing the design on the already great K2, you
minimize design costs and risk.

Take the 2 out of K2, spin it backwards to emphasize the other half of
ham radio and you have a KS for SSB.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Roofing Filter?

2006-11-08 Thread Darwin, Keith
Since the NB occurs right before the existing Xtal filter, adding more
filtering in the NB slot would increase the skirts of the filter, but it
wouldn't do a whole lot more. In other rigs with 2 filters, they are at
different IFs and have other stages between them. Having a 2nd filter
earlier in the signal chain helps to protect the RX from out of band
signals.

The K2 already does that by having the only filter be as early as
possible.

But, a cool option would be to have a narrow SSB filter that could go in
that slot. That way you could configure your SSB adapter to have a wide
Xtal filter for good sound and then add the narrow one for contests and
tough band conditions without having to resort to the variable CW filter
(which performs poorly at wide bandwidths).

Of course, if you can live without your NB. I certainly can.

There was a typo on the order form and the weight was a little high for

RE: [Elecraft] KX1 power mod

2006-11-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
Joe,

The 'KX1 power mod' is available from Elecraft as PN E850230. I could not
find it on the website, and I really don't know why.

The change is quite easy - just 2 resistors to change. R30 increases to 33
ohms (from 22) and R11 is decreased to 4.7 ohms (from 10). If you have the
1/4 watt resistors, you can make the change. Someone who had excess offered
them on the reflector a day or two ago.

The change is needed for the KXB3080 installation, and has been shipped with
that option, but it can be installed on any KX1, even though it is not
required.

Do not exceed 4 watts for any significant length of time with your KX1, and
keep a watch on the temperature above the tuning knob if you are operating
at higher power levels.

wouldn't do a whole lot more.

 Don,
Wasn't there talk a while back about someone replacing the Noise Blanker
with another crystal filter? If it was switchable, like switching in and
out the Noise Blanker, would that add to the shape of the skirts in the
present crystal filter? Not sure about making up for any loss in the
added filter though. Maybe set up this added filter for CW (400-600HZ) ?

I still haul the K2 down to WP2Z.

 Joe,

To generalize - 'roofing filter' would be placed right after the first
mixer for best effectiveness to strip off extraneous mixing products.

The K2 is a single conversion design and the IF filter is placed right
after the first mixer (there is a post-mixer amp there for good dynamic
range) - so it serves both as the IF filter and the 'roofing filter'.

In other words, yes a roofing filter 'does not compute' for a single
 conversion design.

 -Original Message-

In view of this, and excuse me for not being an engineer in receiver
design, why is there not a roofing filter option for the K2. Is it
just not possible in a single conversion rig?

Sorry Joe I meant to send this to the reflector

There is no direct link to the Mods Page that I could find, however;

For the benefit of the Elecraft Reflector Archive and any others that are
looking for the KX1 Power Mod; you can find it by going to the Builders
Resources page, on the top of the Builder's Resources page you will find a link
to the Spare Parts and Mod Kits page, go to the Spare Parts and Mod's page
and
all the way on the bottom is the PDF file that describes the KX1 Power
Modification.

[Elecraft] Wide SSB caps or not?

So guys, I just ordered the SSB board and the 100 watt PA. I also
ordered the wide SSB caps. Should I put them in or leave them out?

Can you hear the difference between 2.4 KHz and 2.6 KHz on receive? On
transmit?

SSB is only about 5% of my operating time. I'll dabble in 'phone here
and there. Everything from contests to DX to rag chewing.

RE: [Elecraft] Wide SSB caps or not?

2006-11-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
Kieth,

If you have the KDSP2 installed, its SSB low pass filter function cuts off
the high frequency end of the 2.6 kHz filter, and you end up with about a
2.4 kHz bandwidth for receive anyway.

What I am saying is that the 2.4 is about ideal for receive. If you want a
more Hi-Fi transmitted signal, then the 2.6 will give you a bit more
bandwidth in your transmitted signal.

Without the KDSP2, the 2.6 kHz will give you a wider receive bandwidth, and
signals tune a little easier as a result, but you have 200 Hz more high
frequency noise along with the signal which may negate the advantages. The
choice depends on your ears and your tastes.

Don W3FPR

RE: [Elecraft] Wide SSB caps or not?

2006-11-08 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I found that the wider filter gave me more flexibility for adjusting the
FL1/OPT1 BFO frequency for the transmit audio I liked best. The wider filter
does allow more HF response, which shows up as high frequency noise on
receive, so I set FL2 to use the OPT1 filter too but with the BFO adjusted
to shift the bandpass for more low and less high frequency response. That
gives me a great deal of control over the sound of other station's signals
that I may find are a bit too bright (lows cut off).

Since the FL1 settings are those used automatically for xmit, choosing
different setups for the other filters does not change the transmit audio.
