[Elecraft] K2 stats for 2kc signal spacing?
HI all: The ARRL (via QST) has recently taken to publishing the 2kc spacing data for their product reviews (receiver portion of review). I have done some searching, but I have not located any such data (from any source) for the K2. Using the ARRL methodology, has anyone measured and published the 2kc data for the K2 for: 1. Blocking Dynamic Range 2. 3rd Order Dynamic Range 3. 3rd Order Intercept (TOI) Just curious! [Elecraft] OT - anti-QRP V31BB (sk, RIP) wav file previously posted
Hi all: Recently, there was an audio link posted in which the infamous V31BB (SK in 1992, I think. Call reissued in 1997), made some disparaging remarks about a QRPer's methodology of making a qso. V31BB certainly did not focus solely on QRPers. Re: [Elecraft] 19inch Racks - somewhat OT
I'll stick my neck out and say it was a standard handed down by the British Post Office, generally known as a Post Office rack, now known by all kinds of standards numbers. David G3UNA - Original Message - From: Tom Skinner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 3:08 PM Subject: [Elecraft] 19inch Racks - somewhat OT Good Morning Group, I just have share this. Before I retired from the Navy, I was serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as one of the assistants to the communications guru, one particularily gruff vice admiral who I'm pretty sure coined the phrase lead, follow or get the hell out of the way, and liked to continually stir whatever pot he happened to be in charge of at the time. For whatever reason, he called me into his office, one day, and asked me if the 19 inch rack panel was a standard or a tradition. I had long since learned not to ask him why he was curious, I just charged off to find out. I uncovered countless references to 19 racks, and a lot of things which specified it, but failed to find out anything about its genisus. Since failure was not an option, I reported that it had something to do with the width of hatches on early submarines, but an original order - if one existed - was lost in the fog of the past. In any event, the 19 inch standard was so deeply ingrained in the military (and a good bit of civilian industry as well) that it might as well have come down as the 11th commandment. He grudently accepted my findings, but continued to press the issue, claiming that if services were going to continue to support 19 racks, there needed to be a mil spec actually in place. Thankfully I retired before being thrown into that briar patch. I have wondered, over the years, if I missed anything. Does anyone REALLY know whether or not the 19 inch is a standard or a tradition. 73, Tom, KJ3D (apparently with too-little-else-to-worry-about-today) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] SN 5901
Nr 5901 is alive and well after 12 days of fun assembling it. However, the maximum power output on 80m is only 7w and on 40m it's only 9w. When I built Nr 439 the Power output on most bands was 10/12 watts. Up to now I've using the station rig FT1000MP as a signal source. I'm awaiting delivery of the N-gen Wideband Noise Generator and the XG2 Three Band Receiver Test Oscillator. So I'm expecting that these will help me to improve the calibration and squeeze out some more power. I've studied the manual closely, but maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? It's not that I need the power because I'm getting very good on air reports and enjoying myself with QRP. It's just that I want to get the K2 to do what I know it can do. Charles - M0BIN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone volume
Hi Sverre The problem with the in-line volume control is that it will reduce the desired signal also. What is really requested here is a way to reduce the sidetone level when using headphones, but leaving it relatively loud when on speaker. That would be a neat programming feat for Wayne, but I don't know if it is really doable. Imagine, two sidetone menu settings, one for speaker audio and one for headphone audio. That would be an ultimate solution. The volume control would then control the desired signal, just as at present. 73, and Happy New year Bob N6WG The Little Station with Attitude - Original Message - From: Sverre Holm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 5:30 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Sidetone volume I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I DO have to reduce the volume greatly when using the headphones. From my perusal of the schematic for the K2, it looks like if I changed R36 There isn't really any need to modify resistor values in the K2 to achieve what you want, unless you like to play inside it. It can be done much easier, I think, with an external headphone extension cable with a built-in volume control. A picure explains what I mean better than words: go to http://www.clasohlson.no/Product/Product.aspx?id=383540 and click on the picture (this is the one I got locally in Norway). It will give you continously variable volume control so you don't have to experiment with fixed resistors inside the K2. I am sure RadioShack has something similar and that someone else on the list can help find it. 73 Sverre LA3ZA http://www.qslnet.de/la3za/ -- Jeg bruker gratisversjonen av SPAMfighter for privatbrukere. That whole part of town has a very post-apocalyptic vibe. The condition of the parking lot fits the condition of the mall and the arena. Last year I heard they were reviving the mall, so the idea is there will be shoppers parking there and will be no room for us. I have a hotel I like to stay at near the airport. [Elecraft] Canadian QRP Award and the RAC Contest
Hi Everybody. For anybody out there that is working on completing their Canadian QRP Award, just a reminder that this weekend represents one of the best opportunities to get on the air and find representatives from the 13 provines/territories handing out QSOs. The annual RAC Winter Contest is one of two annual operating events in Canada, and as such one of the best ways to find Canadians on the air. If you are one of the lucky ones with a CQA in your collection already, or if you are new to the game, then this is also a great opportunity for the single day endorsement that shows contact with all 13 provinces/territories in a single calendar day (UTC). QSLs are not required for the award, just a signed copy of your log extract showing the 13 necessary contacts. The information for the Canadian QRP Award can be found at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/wjhetherington/cqa.htm 73/72 Jeff - VA3JFF Canadian QRP Award Sponsor __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! RE: [Elecraft] Sidetone volume
-Original Message- The problem with the in-line volume control is that it will reduce the desired signal also. I believe that is exactly what is needed. The inline volume control will affect both the sidetone level and the audio output just as the suggested modification of the series resistors R35/R36 for the headphone output also will. The problem that one is trying to deal with is the large difference in sensitivity between the loudpeaker and the more sensitive headphones and then both the AF level and the sidetone level are affected equally. 73 Sverre LA3ZA http://www.qslnet.de/la3za/ -- Jeg bruker gratisversjonen av SPAMfighter for privatbrukere. [Elecraft] K2 SCK Voltage
Hello All, I have been performing the voltage checks on #5885 K2, and I am getting 5 volts on SCK. Manual calls for 0 volts. I searched for other notes on SCK voltage, and have found that some other builders ran across the same problem, but I can't find where anyone wrote about what might be the cause. I have triple checked everything for cold joints, and solder bridges and can't seem to find any mechanical problem. Any advice appreciated. [Elecraft] K2 sidetone improvement
I recently had a chance to implement the improved sidetone filter by TF3MA (http://www.raunvis.hi.is/~matti/TF3MA/sidetone_tf3ma.html). This was inspired by the experience of KT5X in November (http://www.ac6rm.net/mailarchive/html/elecraft-list/2006-11/msg00456.html). This mod really works wonders with the sidetone quality of the K2, and makes it much more like actually received high quality CW. It is probably the mod which has made the most immediate audible difference in my K2 of all the mods that I have made over the years - and I have made many! It is also really very simple to do. The explanation is that it is a better engineering solution to harmonic filtering than the present filter, and that applies even in comparison to the improved filter in the serial no 3000+ K2's. 73 Sverre LA3ZA http://www.qslnet.de/la3za/ -- Jeg bruker gratisversjonen av SPAMfighter for privatbrukere. RE: [Elecraft] HI CUR on 15 meters
Kirk, There are several possibilities. On the K2 side, you could have one too many turns on L23 and/or L24 causing the LPF to be tuned a bit too low. This usually shows up with a test on a dummy load, but is worth checking anyway. At your antenna, the SWR alone does not tell the whole story - what is the resistance and the reactance when measured with an antenna analyzer? If there is a significant amount of reactance, it could de-tune the low pass filter in the K2, and if the resistive element is not near 50 ohms, that will also tend to cause problems. If the Low Pass filter is found to be OK, you could try lengthing or shortening your feedline and electrical 1/8 wavelength for 15 meters at a time (up to 3/8 wavelength total) to see if you can achieve a feedpoint impedance that will work better. You could also use an antenna tuner with that antenna. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I get a HI CUR warning on 15 meters when connected to my 40 meter dipole. [Elecraft] k2 low audio on SSB

Re: [Elecraft] Switch box for key/paddles?
you might think about grabbing one of these AV switchers / videogame selectors that switch video plus left right audio... some have rotary switches, some have pushbuttons...switching up to 5 different devices, I've bought some very inexpensively,,,usually at fleamarkets/hamfests for 5$,,, try ebay for video game selector...for 10-12$ shipped,,, just hope they don't short any of the terminals when not in use like an antenna switch might, I have used similiar switches to switch between linears... even with the key in , key out switching on some xcvrs/ampscombos. happy new year bill At 07:05 PM 12/28/2006, Mike Markowski wrote: I'd like to have a switch box to switch a key between multiple rigs. RE: [Elecraft] k2 low audio on SSB
Hank, The first thing to check is to be certain the KSB2 option is correctly inserted into all the headers. If the KSB2 is properly inserted and the audio is still low, that is an indication that there is a problem with the diode filter switching. First thing to check is RFC1 and RFC2 - if you scaped the wire when winding the toroids, the Chokes could be shorting to the crystal cases. Slide a piece of paper between the crystal cases and the chokes and see if the problem solves itself - rewind RFC1 or RFC2 as required. Check all the diodes on the KSB2 board for proper orientation. If the chokes are good and the diodes are all correct, then you will have to look at the RXC and RXS signal paths on the KSB2 board to determine why the filter switching is not correct. Check my post to Hakan Olssen yesterday for the procedure to check the switching diode voltages. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Hi to the group I am constructing a K2, 5669 and just installed the KSB2 mod. RE: [Elecraft] NY Times story on end of morse requirement (withneatphotos famous hams)
But is CW on the Ham bands a fading signal these days? I wonder. It's certainly faded on the commercial bands and has been 'fading' since the 1930's when Western Union switched to RTTY, but it's still out there aboard a significant number of ships where labor costs are low. There was much hoopla over the fact that the US Coast Guard quit monitoring 500 kHz for maritime distress calls a few years ago (1999 if I recall correctly) but that was rather meaningless, since the USA no longer has a merchant marine to monitor!! We've turned over the business of shipping goods around the world, including to the USA, to foreign powers. We have relatively few merchant ships left afloat, and those are in use mostly because of the 'Jones Act' which requires that any ship going from one US port to another be a US flagged ship. But that's very few ships: mostly those running to and from Hawaii and Alaska ports on the west coast and some running from the Gulf of Mexico to eastern ports. And most of them, since they follow the coast, use cell phones for communications! So that particular announcement of the demise of CW was simply one more recognition that the US is no longer a significant maritime country. (I gotta include a little story here. When I was aboard A SeaLand ship on a shakedown cruise off the California coast in the early 1990's, my job was to check out the radio and radar equipment. I couldn't not raise the Coast Guard on the 2182 SSB distress frequency. The rig appeared to be working correctly but no answer on a frequency guarded 24X7. The captain was standing there watching. He picked up his cell phone and dialed the Coast Guard. It seemed there was a celebration of some sort going on that had distracted the operator monitoring 2182 at the Coast Guard shore station. They apologized and immediately came back on 2182 and said I was loud and clear. The captain hung up and commented, If I ever need them, this is how I'll get them! holding up his cell phone). As I said a while back, I think of Morse like the use of horses. Sure, as the automobile took over 100 years ago, the use of horses declined sharply, but their use certainly did not die out. Indeed, in many ways equestrian skills have grown and the treatment of horses in general is probably better. Any technology that is interesting to people is sure to continue, even thrive. It doesn't necessarily need a major commercial application or financial justification. All it needs to be is fun. That was the story that the Times and other papers missed completely. It's why most of us bought our Elecraft rigs. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: Leigh L.
