[Elecraft] Appalachian Trail on 7-7-07

2007-07-06 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

I am finishing up some work today on a web site.

Later I will pack my backpack and charge batteries for a outing on the
Appalachian Trail on Saturday, 07-07-07.

Depending on the weather I will be at either Round Head off Rte 501 near
Bethel, PA which is a 1 1/2 hour hike or at the pond off of Rte 183 near
Strausstown, PA which is a 15 minute hike.

I am looking to be at my site between 13:00 and 14:00 UTC.

I will try 40 meters first for people that want to try to catch me on the
trail.

I really can't give a specific freq. due to other QSO's that will be on the
air on Saturday. You can find me around 7.030, 10.106, 14.060 or 21.060 +
or - 3 KHz due to other QSO's on the air.

I might stay out on the AT until 19:00 UTC, as long as the QSO's keep moving
along.

I will be using my K1 on the AT.

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka

[Elecraft] sidetone

2007-07-06 Thread Chris Waldrup
I have just started working on my CW so that I can better help out at FD next
year rather than just do SSB. I am working on CW practice in the evenings with
a guy in my QRP club. However, I have noticed that when I hit the key, I hear
nothing from the K2. I am having to turn on my SWL receiver to get a sidetone.
I went to the menu and saw a settting that said StL040.
I wasn't sure if this is sidetone level or not, and changing the value up to
the mid 200's didn't seem to get me a sidetone so it was changed back to 040.
Headphones were tried but no sidetone was heard in them either.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

2007-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Chris,

You have inadvertently changed the sidetone source in the menu.

Enter the menu for STL and set the value to about 40, then tap DISPLAY
to toggle the sidetone source. When you hear sidetone, stop tapping.

The sidetone source selection is intended to support older K2s that do
not have the hardware wiring change added. Unfortunately it seems to be
more trouble than the benefit since there are more K2s with the change
added than without it.

Re: [Elecraft] Zero Beat WWV

2007-07-06 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
A variation on #1 is to start watching the S meter when you get really
close, with AGC set to fast. The response on the K2 seems to be quick
enough that you can see if futter when you get with 10Hz and decide
which is closest. If you are lucky it won't flutter and will slowly
ramp up and down, all at the difference frequency.

Let me see if I can help. First I usually think of 'tuning WWV' rather
than 'zero-beating' just to keep my mind straight - I leave the Zero
Beat term reserved for CW use when you want to tune the desired signal
to match your sidetone pitch.

Tune WWV in using LSB or USB because the K2 does not add an offset for
LSB and USB. There are 3 ways of doing it: 1) Tune the carrier to an
audio frequency of zero (which you cannot really hear, but go as low as
you can) and refine it by tuning until the voice announcements sound
'natural'.

Re: [Elecraft] XV144 and linear amplifier

2007-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Samir,

The only valid reason I know of to use a sequencer is to protect
preamplifiers and other devices that could be damaged by the onset of
RF. Another common reason is to allow time for a slow amplifier relay
to switch so you do not cause arcing at the amplifier contacts - I do
not consider that a valid reason becuase the real solution is to replace
the map relay with a faster one.

So, you may not need a sequencer, but consider the amplifier relay speed
in making your decision.

[Elecraft] K2 #6155 Resistance check for Assembly II - U6 pin 9 low value

2007-07-06 Thread Arthur Gunn
Hi builders

Progress seems fine except for a 36 ohm value measured at U6 pin 8
instead of 100 ohms (page 59). What values have you seen there? My
measurements were made with an Ideal auto-ranging DMM.

I see at least 8 paths plus active devices to be considered for
troubleshooting if 36 ohms is not a commonly seen resistance reading.
The other values in the table of resistance checks are as specified.

I look forward to hearing your experiences at this resistance
checkpoint.

RE: [Elecraft] ATU in for ANT A, out for ANT B

2007-07-06 Thread Dan Barker
It CAN be done on the K2. The KAT2 never retunes unless you press the retune
buttong you'd have to tune your remote AT using key down, but that may not
be a hardship. I have a straight key wired up all the time anyhow. I use the
diodes trick and a stereo Y adapter to have the paddles and key always
on-line.

You'd tune the ANT2 into a good 50 ohm dummy load (or the other tuner -
already tuned - would be better). Then, just remember never to hit the tune
button.

Not Elegant (sri Eric and Wayne), but certainly functional. Of course, after
you accidentally hit tune, tune the remote AT with whatever setting you've
got, hit tune again, and you're back in business.

Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456

snip

I guess the lack of replies means it can't be done on the K2. I would be
interested to know if the K3 can do it.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6155 Resistance check for Assembly II - U6 pin 9 low value

2007-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Arthur,

The 8B line (Measured at U6 pin 8) is a voltage rail, so you should
resolve the low resistance reading before you apply power.

Be certain all the active devices are installed the right way around
(the parts placement diagram at the end of the manual is handy for
that), and check the value of any resistors connected to that voltage
rail before proceeding.

Sorry I can't simplify it any more than that - you will just have to
hunt until you find it - voltage rail problems are like that. If you
are brave and have lots of parts, you could just plug it in and see what
overheats or smokes, but that is not in any way a recommended procedure,
do it at your own peril.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than I will reply, if they
haven't already. I had a builder-for-hire help me via email during my
build of K2 #6100. Although mine passed all the tests, he did tell me
that the resistance readings can be anywhere over the specified value
(e.g., several of mine were magnitudes greater), but that they should
never be below the indicated value. My guess is that you do have a
 problem that needs further investigation.

That's a very useful reply, Dan. I'd assumed that the K2 would re-tune
automatically if the SWR was detected above a certain threshold, like
most auto ATUs do. I'd also not thought beyond pressing the TUNE
button to generate a tuning carrier, since that's what I do
intuitively. But it's certainly a good workaround, if I can keep my
fingers away from that TUNE button.

I have an excellent condition Ten Tec Jupiter with the remote tuning
knob that I would like to work out a trade towards a late serial number
K2/100. I am going to go with Elecraft for my HF equipment. (also
patiently waiting for my K3) The Jupiter looks and works great, has the
factory shipping container, power cord and manual. It does NOT have the
internal tuner. Has the latest firmware installed. Please email with
details if interested. Probably not many on this list interested in
this trade, but there are a lot of K2/100's here.. :) Thanks

The only FCC technical exams that were not ALL multiple choice was/is the one

I am absolutely certain that when I took my Extra and my 1st Phone in
1960, I had to draw schematics for both. I also remember doing a lot of
slide-rule calculations, but I can't remember if the questions were m/c
or fill-in-the-blank.

I *think* (but am not sure) that the General Class test that I took in
'57 also had at least one schematic.

[Elecraft] FCC exams in '50's

2007-07-06 Thread Ken Kopp
When I took my first exam in 1951 ... in OKC, where the FCC came once
per
year ... there's no doubt (!) in my mind that I had to draw ... not
correct ... several
schematics. One was a Colpits (SP?) oscillator. There were also simple
essay

answers required for several questions.

When I took my Commercial Radiotelegraph exam in Tampa I corrected
errors in
several schematics. The cigar-chewing, fowl-smelling resident
examiner's name
was Neeb. That's mighty fine CW, son. 'Twas enough to make a feller
smile (:-))

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and SSB

2007-07-06 Thread Bill Coleman

On Jun 12, 2007, at 2:49 PM, Gary D Krause wrote:

The reason I am asking is because, I have the SSB board ready to
install. I have been using the basic K2 the last few days in CW
mode and I really like it since I work mostly CW.

The installation of the KSB2 won't affect operation on CW. If
anything, you'll be able to use the wide OP1 filter on CW as well.

I have a Kenwood TS-530SP that works great on SSB so, I'm trying
to decide if it's really worth installing the SSB option. So, I'm
trying to gather as many opinions as possible so that I can sit and
torture myself further. :-)

Go for it. I've been using the KSB2 for five years now. It works
pretty well. I've got an unusual K2 because I have changed the
capacitors out for the 1.9 kHz filter design by KI6WX. Current
KSB2s use a bit wider filter selection.

I did own an Argonaut V for about eight months. It would put out
about 20 watts which made SSB a bit more of a challenge. Since I
have the Kenwood that will put out 170 watts, believe it or not,
I'm thinking that I would probably not use the SSB option unless
it's for QRP SSB.

I think it would be pretty near impossible to get 170 watts OUT of a
TS-530SP. The rig used a pair of 6146B tubes. These are good for
about 90 watts INPUT EACH, for about 100 watts out, perhaps 80 watts
on 10m.

Your opinions are welcome. I should mention that I'm not planning
to add the 100 watt amp to the K2. If I'm going to do that, I'll
just buy a K3! I also work a lot of QRP CW.

The 100 watt amp can be deactivated just by turning the power knob
down. The K2/100 is still a great radio. The KAP100 is only what
$389? A K3/100 is more than four times as much.

[Elecraft] K2 Resistor Question...

2007-07-06 Thread dking
Working on my K2 (page 48) Assembly, Part II and as I'm installing the
wad of 1/4 watt resistors, I have been measuring them after
installation.

R6 and R8 are both listed as 100 ohm resistors (BRN-BLK-BRN), but
after installation, both show 61.6 ohms on three different
DMM's..while R7 which is a 68 ohm resistor is showing 50.1

I recognize all of them read slightly lower than their listed
values...but these seemed at such wide variance I didn't want to
continue until I knew whether I should be replacing them or not.

These three resistors all form a U around relay K12...so I didn't know
if the relay would be sucking down my readings...but I'm placing the
probe on the resistor wire on either side of the body of the
resistor...so I can't see how something else could be causing that
great of a difference

Another identical 100 ohm resister still in the paper ladder to be
installed later in the sequence is giving me a 97 ohm reading...

Any advice would be appreciated.

Go with the K3. The K2/100 has limitations on how much power you can
run. In the stock configuration, you can only run about 25-40 watts
safely. If you add some supplemental cooling, you can go to 50 watts.

The K3/100, on the other hand, can run 100 watts continuously. It
also has the option of doing FSK, if that's important.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Resistor Question...

2007-07-06 Thread David F. Reed

David,

I am not sure how best to put this...

Imagine you put a resistor of infinite value in parallel with your 100
ohm resistor and measured it at the ends of the 100 ohm resistor; of
course, you would see the 100 ohms; what if the two resistors were 100
ohms each? well, being in parallel, you would see 50 ohms; if you put a
0 ohm resistor in parallel with the 100 ohm, what would you see?

so anything with some resistance to it, a resistor, a trace, a relay
coil, will affect the resistance you measure.

A nice mental exercise you can do with a handful of resistors is to tack
solder them together into a cube, and start measuring across different
points; maybe even make it simple, and do just a square first (4
resistors); you might start to develop some intuition about how this
works. try it with same value resistors first...

I think you will find your resistors are fine; when you get to a test
sequence in the manual, you will see they tell you what to look for in
resistance that is quite different and that this intuition gained will
help you feel more comfortable.

Alternatively, if you are more accustomed to math, you might just learn
some of the associated applications of Ohm's law, or do both what the
heck...

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
R6 and R8 are both listed as 100 ohm resistors (BRN-BLK-BRN), but
after installation, both show 61.6 ohms on three different
DMM's..while R7 which is a 68 ohm resistor is showing 50.1

I recognize all of them read slightly lower than their listed
values...but these seemed at such wide variance I didn't want to
continue until I knew whether I should be replacing them or not.

These three resistors all form a U around relay K12...so I didn't know
if the relay would be sucking down my readings...but I'm placing the
probe on the resistor wire on either side of the body of the
resistor...so I can't see how something else could be causing that
great of a difference

the rest of the circuit that is in parallel with the resistor is
responsible for that variation.

Another identical 100 ohm resister still in the paper ladder to be
installed later in the sequence is giving me a 97 ohm reading...

And if you removed the ones you already soldered in, they would measure
close to the same 100 ohms (or 97 in your case.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I remind people that before the FCC became involved,
there was no test. If you could beg, borrow, or steal
the parts and nail them to a board in the correct
order, you were on the air. Talk about vanity calls,
you made your own!

I took my General test in the Federal Building in
Cleveland Ohio, the pressure was on and the test was
tough. I came home to an HW16 with a homebrew VFO.

I'm now studying the QA for the Extra exam, which is
a far cry from even the General back in the day.

Following the trend, the new test will require the
applicant to enter their credit card number FROM
MEMORY in front of 3 VE's, including the expiry date
and that little 3 digit code on the back of the
card!!!

I loved the K2's I built and learned so much, K3
should take me to the next level.

The band was so bad today that 20m was dead. Hey Eric

magic when they are delivered in the Fall - clever!

The first time I took the 2nd Telegraph my steely eyed examiner was a
very nice woman (Seattle office). I showed up to take the exam with an
electronic keyer and she laughed at me and said I could set that aside
and use their hand key if I wanted to take the exam. (Evidently, a bug
would have been acceptable but I didn't even own one and couldn't have
sent with one anyway -- I'd been using a keyer for far too long.)

So I copied the 20 WPM without flaw and then started pumping out the CW

used a hand key in 20 years! About half way through, she said - and I

LOL I had a similar experience when I took the Amateur Extra in 1977 at the
FCC office in Los Angeles. I had brought in my trusty Vibroplex bug, but in my
nervousness, I had forgotten to check where the weight was set before I
started. As it turned out, the last guy I had worked with it was apparently
pretty slow, because I had the weight set all the way down to the bottom of
the reed. About half way through the sending exam, the examiner says, You're
going to have to speed it up. I panicked. What should I do, stop to readjust
the weight, or just try to squeeze the characters out faster by shrinking the
spacing? Should have readjusted the weight, of course -- I had plenty of
time -- but I opted to just press on. Stupid, because now my code sounded like
crap. It was a close thing, but he passed me. :-)

The guy I had, truth to be told, was anything but that legendary steely-eyed
FCC examiner. In point of fact, he looked like he was still badly hung over
from the night before, and would rather be doing just about anything than
giving a bunch of pimply-faced geeks their ham radio exams. :-) That was the
last ham exam I ever took, of course. Kinda wish there was another higher
level I could go for, just for the excitement of it!
