[Elecraft] K2 #5723 is alive but got a few problems

2007-10-24 Thread KU4YP
Hello all

Well, k2 5723 is alive, but I have a few snags. First, No smoke, and
about 10 watts +\- on all bands except 40m. no output on 40. Display says "
high current " and shows no rf output on meter on 40 m. but I was stupid and
handled a plug for the cw key over the rig without the cover. Blew the fuse
on the power line when the plug dropped onto the board and I think took out
one of the PA transistors, the one closest to the back of the rig. Replaced
the fuse, On all other bands, I can get 5 to 6 watts MAX out on all bands
except 40m. still no rf output. Also, all bands now give the hi current
message on the display.

I am learning as I go here so could someone please explain how I can
confirm if one of the Pa transistors is bad? Looking for suggestions and
procedure.

Tnx and 73 mike ku4yp

RE: [Elecraft] [K3] Unanswered Questions ...

2007-10-24 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

OK, that brings me back to the original question ... since the
standard 2.7 KHz, 5-pole filter is 2900 Hz at -6dB which should
be wide enough on receive for AM (by shifting the receive passband
to use one sideband) and for ESSB (except for the ultra fidelity
group), is there any harm in using the FM filter for AM and ESSB
transmit?

If one wants maximum performance on AM/ESSB receive, I understand
the 6 KHz filter will provide better IF image rejection (now I'm
really interested in the FM filter curves - including the stopband
and ultimate rejection specification). However, if the priorities
are maximum performance on SSB and CW (including protection from
AGC pumping), a slight (?) reduction image rejection due to the
wider filter may be an acceptable compromise given the limited
number of available filer "slots".

What is the ultimate rejection in the 8-pole filters, the on-line
curves only go to -80 dB? Some of the filters (250, 400, 1.8K)
show signs of "flaring out" at 70 to 75 dB down and for others (6K,
2.8K) the scale is wide enough that the skirts are "off screen"
before they reach -80 dB.

Of course, this may all be academic when variable width filters
are available.

In FM mode, capture effect helps suppress the effect of "image"
leakage. AM and (E)SSB modes have far more dynamic range and the
15 kHz IF image must be suppressed by some 10s of dB more than is
required for excellent FM operation.

Are you speaking of receive performance or transmit performance?

Receive characteristics.

No, the issue is IF image rejection.

Lyle,

Thanks for the information ...

Are you speaking of receive performance or transmit performance?

The conversion "image" either transmit or receive is separated
from the desired frequency by twice the IF (in this case 15 KHz).
In this case the "image" would be 30 KHz away - in this case at
8.245 MHz (or 8.185 MHz depending whether the second LO was above
or below the IF).

Since the specifications for the KFL3B-FM are not available, the
closest filter I can find is the 15 KHz wide, 7.0075 MHz, 6-pole
INRAD "front end" filter. That filter shows a estimated shape
factor of 2.1 (1/60 dB). Assuming the desired signal is centered
in the first IF (roofing) filter passband and we were dealing with
a 6 KHz wide ESSB signal, the closest "image" frequency would be
27 KHz from the center of the "roofing" filter. At 27 KHz from
center, the response of that 15 KHz/6-pole filter is down 80 to
100 dB depending on the filter's ultimate rejection - remember,
the filter is 30 KHz wide at the -60 dB point which is 15 KHz
from the center of the passband.

If we're looking at an AM signal with 5 KHz audio response, the
nearest component is 25 KHz from the center of the filter - again
down far more than 80 dB (and another 6 dB down compared to the
PEP of the transmitted signal).

It would seem to me that 70 to 80 dB suppression of the transmit
image is far more than required by Part 97.307(d) ... and that
something in the .01 mW PEP range for 1500 W PEP of "desired"
signal would be more than acceptable.

Is there something in the digital domain that I'm missing -
aliasing, artifacts, etc. that effects this?

Now, on receive 80 or 90 dB may not be sufficient rejection, it
depends on conditions but still at nearly two times the -60 dB
point on the filter skirt it would seem that the image response
would be determined by be more one of circuit leakage and the
filter's ultimate (stopband rejection) rather than skirt
selectivity.

Has the IF image response been checked with an engineering sample
or prototype of the KFL3B-FM in either receive or transmit?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Unanswered Questions ...

2007-10-24 Thread Lyle Johnson

Hello Joe!

Unlike most DSP-based radios, the K3 converts from the main IF (8.215
MHz) to the 15 kHz DSP IF without an intervening 455 kHz IF. This helps
give the K3 a cleaner sound and better dynamic range since there are
fewer conversions.

However, this also means the IF crystal filter must have exceptional
skirt selectivity to prevent the 15 kHz "image" from getting through.

In FM mode, capture effect helps suppress the effect of "image" leakage.
AM and (E)SSB modes have far more dynamic range and the 15 kHz IF
image must be suppressed by some 10s of dB more than is required for
excellent FM operation.

It is for this reason that the FM filter is recommended only for FM use.
It may also be used for AM receive, but is not recommended for AM
transmit. The 6 kHz filter has the necessary 15 kHz IF image rejection
to be suitable for use with either AM or (E)SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 & KRC2

2007-10-24 Thread Jack Brindle

Darrell;

Nice suggestions. The best way to see what triggers the KRC2 can
handle is to view the KIO2 command set. Whenever one of the
parameters changes, and is reported out the serial port, the KRC2
picks it up, creating an internal event. The KRC2 personality will
then determine whether that event does anything. The standard
personality does just a few things (mostly just band changes), while
the KRC2ACC personality makes use of most of the parameters. Note
that for the KRC2 to see these events, it must be connected to the
KRC2's serial IO and be set to use that data. See the KRC2 manual for
jumper settings for serial mode.

There are some problems inherent with a couple of the items you list
involving availability of the information. For example, if the K2
control processor does not find a KAT-2 or KAT-100, it will not allow
any further processing that requires those devices. Thus when you hit
the ANT button on the front panel, it doesn't even try to communicate
with the ATU, but simply puts up the LCD error message and goes on.
Thus the KRC2 doesn't see anything that would tell it to do
something. I believe the RXAnt selector behaves the same way,
depending on the K160 module being present.

However, if the 160 meter module is present, the RxAnt selector is a
trigger for the KRC2, and it can make decisions based on RxAnt being
switched on or off. The use of this trigger is not included in the
standard KRC2 personality.

As for the tune button, I don't believe it causes anything to be sent
out on the serial port, which means the KRC2 cannot be triggered from
it. This would be a great addition, but would require changes in the
K2 program memory, something we probably won't be seeing for a while.
It seems the engineer is a bit busy with other things at this
time... ;-)

If you have other suggestions or requests, give me a shout directly
and we can discuss them.

Why is that, does the DSP modulation process require additional
filtering to make it acceptable on transmit? If so, how "bad"
is the unfiltered signal?

Since the KFL3B-FM is not likely to be any wider than the
typical four pole "roofing filter" in most of the "modern"
transceivers, one would think that AM receive performance
would be good to excellent with just the DSP filtering. In
that case it would seem to be silly to "waste" one filter
filter slot if one wanted to configure a K3 for both FM and
AM (or ESSB) transmission.

If both the KFL3B-FM and KFL3A-6K are required, it means the
user must make a choice between equipping the receiver with
normal and narrow roofing (first IF) filters for both SSB and
CW or "all mode" (FM, AM, and ESSB) operation.

[Elecraft] The white box

2007-10-24 Thread Don Rasmussen
Risking Eric's wrath I must post a type of "me too"
post - congrats Doug on your new K3!

You are bound to remember this HF radio long after
other purchases from the "candy store", and after
memories of orders you've placed on the phone.

That radio was hand crafted for you.

I imagine the faint scent of Lisa Jones perfume still
lingering on the packaging slip.

I met her one time, we talked and shared. I must say
we really hit it off. I said "Hello Miss Jones". She
said "Call me Lisa".

I read her my Visa number - and she softly read it
back.

She said "Anything else" - and I said "No, not
today...".

That -means- something darn it.

As the days pass I savor the memories of our sharing
experience.

Oh - So sorry, I digress, lucky for you, yes, enjoy,
yadda yadda ;-)

Call me Lisa!

Jeez, Doug !

You need to come and recite "The Night Before Christmas" to my kids ... in
free prose !

You mean something like this?

With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore.

Twas the night before shipment
when all through the shop
the Elecraft crew exhausted
and ready to drop!

The K3's were stacked
by the back door with care
in hopes the UPS man
would soon be there

The hams were all tired
of the air-waves so dead
with K3 block diagrams
scrambled in their heads

When out in the street
there arose such a squeal
It must be a truck
his brakes on the steel

I sprang from my chair
from in front of the rig
my heart skipped a beat
it must be something big!

And what to my wondering
eyes did appear
but a shiny brown truck
must be full of gear!

Mr. Brown quickly hopped
from out of his truck
he had a big box
could this be good luck?

He walked to my door
and gave his sharp knock
I could only just stand there
I guess I was in shock

I opened the door
and what must this be
It was from Aptos
It is my K3!!!

As I picked up the box
I thought I could hear
The Elecraft gang
Wishing...a good DX year!

73, Roger WA7BOC K2#755 and waiting...

Joe,

Those measurements are not yet available for the FM filter. I believe a plot
will
be posted on the website when the testing is done. If not, I'll put the data
on
the FAQ.

Elecraft does not recommend using the FM filter in transmit for anything other
than
FM. For ESSB, you will need to use the AM filter. There will also be a config
menu item for ESSB to select the final TX BW when the AM filter is used.

Hi all,

It would be nice to have more videos of the K3 on youtube.com, I have

Right now there are only two videos regarding the K3, one from Dayton

Please list what other triggers there are.

My wishlist for the KRC2 and K2:

1. Sense the Ant 1/2 switch on the K2, even when no Elecraft tuner is
installed or connected, and sink or source outputs based on the state of this
switch.

2. Sense the receive antenna menu option, even without the K160 module, and
sink or source outputs based on the state of this menu option.

3. Allow the tune button on the K2, to lower power and the KRC2 to put out a
tune signal to an external antenna tuner.

Had my

I approached the box with caution as you just can't be too careful about
strange
packages these days, just think about what they do to unattended luggage at
the airport! As I gazed upon it I had this hazy recollection that I had
recently
seen a similar container, but where? Yes, it had been a picture of an
attractive
young lady holding it and yet another picture of a white bearded man holding
one of these boxes, flanked by the same lady! There must be a connection!
And then I recalled I had actually met this lady, but where?

As I drew closer, I could see what appeared to be a shipping label . Well,
that should answer the questions. Return address, "Elecraft". Oh, that
little
purveyor of "ham radios" down the coast in the quaint little village of
Aptos.
I searched my memory as to what this could be. The last thing I had
ordered from them had been a shield upgrade kit for my K2/KPA100
so I could move the KPA100 back from its home in an EC2. And then
it hit me...many months ago at the DX convention in Visalia I stopped
by the Elecraft booth and saw a new product, the K3. Nice looking radio,
sorta like a K2 on steroids. Upon further investigation it was far more
than a K2, with features available only on $10k radios, and some available
nowhere else. As soon as I expressed interest in perhaps purchasing one,
one of Eric's goons wrestled me to the floor and Eric shoved an order form
into my hand, while extracting a credit card from my wallet. "Just sign here
and by the end of July, you will have the best radio in the world!"

July passed as did August, as well as September. By that time I had managed
to repress the memory of actually ordering the radio, firmly convinced that
Eric and Wayne had absconded with the down payments and moved to
Brazil, living the good life. Yet this must be it, the K3! Still skeptical,
I haulled
the box back to my allready cluttered work bench, whipped out my 60 year
old Boy Scout knife (yes, I have achieved Old Fartdom), cut through the
sealing tape...and there it was, lots of pieces of a K3,all packaged in ESD
proof plastic.

But now the search for the single most important component of an Elecraft
radio,
the serial number! Mine is smaller than yours! So far nothing obvious on top
so
need to dig deeper. Check the back panel and it has not been "pre-serialed".
Damn, I'm down to the rf board and still nothing but lots of hardware. It
looks
like someone dumped the screw bins in a hardware store on the floor and
tossed the result into a single drawer. But I digress, only one more layer
to go,
and there it is! The Holy Grail! With trembling fingers I open the envelope
with
the S/N tag.it's, it's ...#23. Outstanding!

And now where DID I leave that screwdriver?...

[Elecraft] [K3] Unanswered Questions ...

2007-10-24 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I have not been able to find answers to these two questions
in the archives, in the K3 FAQ or on the Elecraft web site.

1) What is the bandwidth of the KFL3B-FM filter at -6 dB
   and -60 dB?

2) If the KFL3B-FM is installed in a K3 (when available) is
a separate AM filter required for AM and/or ESSB transmit?
In other words, is the requirement simply that one roofing
filter be of sufficient bandwidth to pass the AM/ESSB or
is the "proper" bandwidth required to clean up artifacts
   from the DSP modulation process?

[Elecraft] Polar Bear QRP Hunt!

2007-10-24 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello,

Please join the hunt for Polar Bears! On Saturday, October 27th, 2007 we
start yet another Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event Season. QRPers
known as Polar Bears will go out into the Full moon night and operate
our QRP radios. This is really a fun event and all QSOs are not
contest-type QSOs, but raw chews! To find out more about this unique
event, go to the EPA QRP Club's Polar Bear Site.

http://www.n3epa.org/Pages/PolarBear.htm

For this first PBMME of the season, the four "founding bears" will be
operating from Pulpit Rock on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania.
Some will drive up the mountain while others will hike the 2.5 miles to
the summit. I'll hike to the summit so why not give me a qso for the
effort!

Most of the polar bears will setup in a large field on the summit known
as the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society Site.

Why not bag a Polar Bear Saturday night during the hunt?

Re: [Elecraft] proposal: why not design a monoband CW/SSB QRP TRX

2007-10-24 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604
I wouldn't mind seeing an Elecraft 40M SSB/CW rig (since it would
almost certainly be stable enough for PSK31 and AFSK RTTY, too).
But take a look at the MMR-40 from Hendricks QRP Kits. It can be used
as-is, or with the NorCal FCC-1 or with the FCC-1 and -2 combination.
Or you can use a Small Wonder Labs FreqMite for a frequency readout.

I picked up one within 30 minutes of picking up my K3, since the K3 is
a little large to use for a motorcycle rig, and I want SSB capability.
I'll use the FreqMite, myself.

The Sierra is a CW rig, and I think the request included SSB.
Note that the Cascade, a 20/75M SSB rig, was modified to a 17/40M version,
but it wasn't stable enough for my purposes. (Wow, that was 12 years ago!!)

What about a sierra with a 40 meter plug in?

The only thing I don't like about the sierra maybe is
   the limited vfo range.

Sometimes the slow CW guys hang out in the old novice
portion of the band, and CW IS allowed anywhere in the band...
I have very fond memories of the novice segments!

I have not had one, but the basic design of the sierra
looks good to me, all it needs is a wide range accurate
   vfo maybe.

I must say, I really like analog, I sure hope the K3
   acts like an analog radio.

[Elecraft] Re:Elecraft K2 Two problems

2007-10-24 Thread garyhvizdak
Brian (GM3AKF) writes ...

Why when I remove the KDSP2 does the audio disappear?

Brian,

Referring to the upper right corner of this diagram ...
http://www.unpcbs.com/common/images/diagram_large.png
the audio chain in a stock K2 is routed through jumper wires CTRL-R18 and R19.
However, these jumpers are removed when CTRL-J1 and J2 are installed in
preparation for the installation of the DSP.

You can use your K2 without the KDSP2 by jumpering from CTRL-J1-1 to CTRL-
J2-1 and from CTRL-J1-2 to CTRL-J2-2, i.e. from pin 1 on J2 to pin 1 on J2 and
from pin 2 on J1 to pin 2 on J2.

Re: [Elecraft] proposal: why not design a monoband CW/SSB QRP TRX

2007-10-24 Thread Rick Dettinger

I had all QSOs on 40 m. 40 m is where the action is,
day and night. Others might favor other bands. But I
would fancy a great monoband transceiver. More than a
decade after the Norcal 40 A, I bet Wayne can amaze us
all again! 72, Chris Hs0zfe

 =

I agree about 40 meters. I have often said that I could do about 90% of my
operating with my Norcal 40A. But I disagree about the need for a new 40M
monoband design. The simple analog design makes it a delight to use. No
digital quantum jumps in the tuning. No operation manual or cheat sheet
needed. The only change for home use would be to use the K2 mixer design
and this would more than double the cost as it involves more than just
subbing a TUF mixer. Compare the two designs. The power consumption would
increase considerably. Mods to customize for user preference are easy. I
like to use multiturn tuning pots like the K1 uses.
But I still have a K3 on order.

2007-10-24 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604

I've got my K3 (#22) and the power cable is a kit.

BTW, the radio is built and tested, after a minor problem, and the
radio project for the day is update the firmware and clear a space for
it at the operating position. I'm also working on memorizing the
manual. But I have too many projects, and I want to take advantage of
the good weather for outside stuff.

but.. the K3 is a no solder kit! Sorry...

I converted my shack and a couple op positions at our club shack to APP's -
soldered dozens of them, works great.

One tip: make sure of the orientation of the connector pins before
soldering especially on heavy gauge wire. This can be a bit tricky as the
pin will want to rotate on the wire as soon as you touch it with the
soldering iron (Murphy at work). It's important so you don't have to twist
the conductor to get the pin into the connector.

Also the little APP insertion tool is quite handy for small gauge wire.

So now we know, there are two solder connections on the K3 kit! (Four if
   you count the PL-259)

The assembled K3 comes with APP already attached on one end of the 5' #12
wire cable. The K3 kit provides the parts for the builder to fabricate the
same thing. The other end of the cable in both cases is unterminated.

The K3 SO239s come with a wire pre-soldered. The other end of the wire is a
gold-plated pin that plugs into its mating socket on the KANT3 or KAT3.

I use Power Poles for all my 12 volt gear: radio power, chargers, other
electronic gadgets, and have always soldered the pins on. I have never
had a failure in years of using them. One small benefit of soldering,
for those of us cheapskates, is that they can be used again for other
purposes. Just release from the plastic housing with a jeweler's
screwdriver, unsolder, and resolder onto another application.

I use the same little screwdriver to push the pin into the housing, but
watch your fingers!

I confirm soldering works great, just be careful to get a good flow of
molten solder, but not enough to run out of the contact end and onto the
actual wiping contact.

For what its worth, I have converted all my 12v power to use PPs, I even
took the Molex connector off the Yaesu FT-857 and replaced with PP (why
didn't I do what a lot of people have done and put PPs on the fly lead?
Because the Molex connector had an intermittent connection, not to mention
it being about twice the size). To this end, I bought a West Mountain Pro
crimper from Quicksilver Radio Products (http://www.qsradio.com/, I found
them to be very good) because I had so many to do.

Powerwerx (http://www.powerwerx.com/) sells an inexpensive tool for
locking the connector into its housing. This tool can also be used to
remove a connector from the housing.

I have one of the crimp tools sold by Powerwerx
(http://www.powerwerx.com/product.asp?ProdID=3324&CtgID=1022) and it
works much better than the less expensive tool also from that company.
With the TRIcrimp, I get perfect crimps every time.

Sometimes difficulty in getting the contact into the housing is caused
by a slight bend in the contact (the less expensive crimper tended to do
this) or a slight out of round in the crimped body of the contact.

I have not so far soldered the contacts on, but do plead guilty to
putting a ratchet tie around the figure eight cable just before it
enters the housing and filling the void in the housing with hot glue and
extending the hot glue up to the ratchet tie. The purpose is to prevent
repeated bending of the cable near the contact. Maybe this is not good
practice. I don't know. FWIW.

Usual disclaimers.
