[Elecraft] K3 - very brief first impressions...
Trying to grab a moment to post some first impressions - here goes: - The kit arrived in perfect condition with a complete inventory, no missing parts! Doing the inventory took me about 90 minutes, but I've done a few Elecraft inventories before... - I didn't keep good notes on time, but after inventory it took about 5 hours to assemble the basic K3/10 at a non-hurried rate, and about half an hour to do the alignment and final checks. - On a windows machine firmware download is easy and quick. You install the downloader and it knows how to find the server and check versions. The downloader includes a port test to make sure your serial port is speaking with the K3. Worked perfectly on COM6 (which is more than you can say about a lot of programs...) - There were a couple places where the assembly was a little tight and weird. I will say that if you are forcing it, you may be doing it wrong - and if something won't go where it is supposed to, try other angles until it does. Taking a step back helps too. - If you have built a K2, you can do this. The mechanical assembly is similar enough. - The part of the assembly process that is most like the K2 is installing the KPA3 100 watt amp - specifically the early K2... For the K3, you assemble and test it as a 10W radio before you install the KPA3. Then you disassemble half the rig to put in the KPA3: top and bottom covers, the KNB3, and so forth. Parts everywhere and a pile of screws! You end up making a lot of changes to the back of the radio. Needless to say, I also found this part to be the most fun! (OK, the Front Panel was also a lot of fun to piece together :) - Be sure to run a complete set of TX Gain calibrations on each band at both 5W and 50W, or it won't let you transmit! Operating: - I took advantage of the CQWW phone this weekend and operated phone only to start. This week is CW if I can stop working long enough. I'll do RTTY once my connector order comes in and I can hook up FSK. - The K3 swims in a space formerly occupied by an FT1000D! - During the CQWW I wanted to practice tuning in difficult and closely spaced phone signals. Good news: the K3 can do that! I found by just fiddling with the Width and Shift I could pull out a weak signal hidden by an adjacent strong signal a few 100HZ away. Many voices were readable down to a 1.2KHz width! And the auto notch works like a charm. - The Monitor works well, and once you read the instructions the Mic Gain and Comp are easy to set. My hearing has a little trouble figuring out how much Comp is too much, however... - All my stuff is set up for Yaesu but I had a spare cable for the Goldline which I converted to the Elecraft pinout by moving two wires. (I like using the boom mic because it forces me to sit up straight...) Works like a champ. - Also got it working with the ACOM2000A - the power control makes it easy to nail the 15W necessary to tune the amp the first time. - Made a few dozen contacts in the CQWW just for fun. Busting pileups no problem. A cool treat: I received tonight a video file from V73RY of him working me! I think he just did some video of some contacts and decided to share them with the stations he worked - but now I know what the K3 sounds like in Tonga. That's all for tonight - any questions, fire away! 73 - jeff wk6i -- Jeff Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Twisted Oak Winery http://www.twistedoak.com/ Winery Blog http://www.elbloggotorcido.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. hi David - I did get a your order will ship within two weeks email (and it did). But before that I had emailed Lisa to check the order because I wasn't sure which filter options I had ordered - so she didn't have to email me. I have an HM10 dual I'm planning on using with my K3 - did you find any issues with setup for a Goldline. I plan on using the ProSet-K2 from the front mic connector and the HM10 on a boom in the back. I think the Proset will need bias (does it?) and the HM10 not - I haven't figured out from the op manual whether the bias is settable on a per connection basis yet? David Ferrington, M0XDF wrote: I have an HM10 dual I'm planning on using with my K3 - did you find any issues with setup for a Goldline. None at all - I guessed that the High Gain range would be required for a bare HC4 element, and that seems to be correct. I think the Proset will need bias (does it?) and the HM10 not - I haven't figured out from the op manual whether the bias is settable on a per connection basis yet? Yes - you can set bias and gain *range* from the main menu separately for the front and back mic inputs. You do have to set which one is active, and you do have to set the gain level from the knob on the front panel *I think*. It wasn't a concern of mine so I don't know if they save the value when you switch between front and rear connector. The ProSet-K2 does need bias and you can set that separately for front and back connector. Re: [Elecraft] Alignment/Test II assistance request
Rod, I believe you had a typo - the PLL range must be between 9.8 and 15 kHz, so your PLL range is on the low side by quite a bit, and should be corrected (it could possibly be the cause of your 'no signals on 40' situation). First do some more verification steps - carefully check the soldering of the varactors (D16 and D17) and RP2 and R19 (check the values too). After that, monitor the voltage out of U5 pin 7 when in CAL FCTR. When you tap BAND+ you should find 4 volts and when tapping BAND- you should see close to zero volts. Do the same thing but this time monitor the voltage at U6 pin 1 - the swing should be about twice the voltage swing you found at U5 pin 7 (if it is not, check the thermistor board). If you do have these voltage swings as expected, and the components and soldering are OK, you may have to replace the PLL crystal - some crystals have a higher Q than others and will not move as far in a VXO circuit (the PLL Reference is really just a VXO). For the BFO range, it may be OK for most of your filter settings, but if you have to change it, a small value capacitor (10 to 20 pf) connected between U11 pin 6 and ground (use U11 pin 3) should bring it into range - you may have to experiment a bit with the value. If you can connect a real antenna to the receiver, you stand a better chance of hearing signals on 40 meters. While there are usually some signals on 40, many evenings I have found them quite weak and barely able to move the S-meter - we can blame the sunspot cycle for that. If you have a 40 meter crystal and a few parts, you could build the oscillator shown in the manual appendix E page 9 - that has plenty of output to give you a signal for troubleshooting. Alternately, you can use most any other transmitter running into a dummy load along with your short wire antenna on the K2. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Need a second opinion with some Align/Test II results. I followed the T/S steps and checked associated components C84, C85, D19, D17, L31 X1--all are correct. Item 2: BFO, BFOhigh-freq = 4917.16 kHz, BFOlow=freq = 4912.88 kHz, Both a smidge higher than the manual spec. 4917 kHz and 4912 kHz respectively. Frequency measurements were made with the internal frequency meter, after calibrating it per the manual with a Radio Shack wide range frequency meter. Experience building K2s told me to call it good because they things were so close and press on. But I've been away from building for 2 years or so, and thought I better get a second opinion. FWIW PLL linearization worked just fine, as did Filter/BFO setup. Item 3: Adjusting L34 for best S/N ratio I could not really notice much change. L1 L2 seamed to peak OK with a Noise Generator connected to the antenna jack. But with a few feet of wire connected to the ANT jack I could _NOT_ receive any signals on 40m. Is 40 that dead? It might be my QTH, river valley surrounded by low mountains. I'll have to get access to an XG1 or XG2 and do more trouble shooting. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3, P3E, Transverters (Satellites)
Rubbish I run all my transverters and power amps right through 3456Mhz in the shack with great results , On 3456 a single loop yagi has 112 elements is 12 feet long and has about 23dbm gain with mast mount preampsresults are excellent. More important is the correct installation of connectors to keep loss to a minimum. Try putting a 200 watt 2304 amp on the tower, ain't going to happen. 73 kf4yox - Original Message - From: Lyle Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: michael taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 4:14 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3, P3E, Transverters (Satellites) Maybe wait for future K3 VHF/UHF modules? Perhaps a KM1 weak signals oriented (CW, SSB) DSP based VHF to microwave transceiver? Maybe vaguely similar to Bob W7PUA's DSP-10 2m SDR/DSP transceiver. :-) One of the problems with gear for 900 MHz and higher is that you really want the RF deck mounted at the antenna, if possible. A weatherproof transverter, if you will. Feedlines affordable to most of us have too much loss. AN alternative is to remote a preamp and power amp, and let the feedline loss attenuate the Tx output of the shack-based exciter to the drive level needed by the power amp at the antenna. With satellites, you often have a situation where you only want/need a Tx or an Rx converter. L band for satellites in the Amateur Service are restricted to 1268-1270 MHz, uplink (transmit) only. Until now, S-band (2.4 GHz) has been downlink (receive) only. So traditional transverters may not be the most cost effective solution. For VHF/UHF this is not the case, where 2m and 70cm are used for both up- and downlink and feedline losses are manageable (even if the antennas aren't!). Another consideration is full duplex operation for satellites, which suggests you want different IFs for Tx and Rx. Finally, you probably want VHF IFs for microwave operation for image rejection if nothing else. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Question: Over-voltage protection (OVP) for K2, K1
Dave, Were I to do the high-power model, I'd probably use the same Anderson power-pole connectors as in the K2/100 simply to retain compatibility with everything else. Alan Alan D. Well, the K2/100's cable has an inline fuse at the PSU end, if constructed in accordance with Elecraft's instructions although a separate, faster blow fuse could be incorporated into the crowbar box. I must confess that I'd originally thought of incorporating a crowbar-in-a-box, but the idea was swamped with other things and I simply haven't done anything about it - until you jogged my memory. I have two linear and one switchmode power supply here; all are capable of supplying 13v8 at 30 amps plus so supply fuses are important to me. All of the units are capable of providing some variation in output voltage by internal adjustment. I would be concerned if the voltage crept up a little but not outside the supply's parameters, which might cause the K2/100 to draw nearer 30A on transmit. The crowbar could be permanently fitted in line and connectors could be as simple as two hefty strips of PCB to which the input and output leads are soldered. If it's a hefty beast, it might find favour with users of other equipment that are supplied at 12v and many amps - (the universal crowbar?) 73 DaveL G3TJP - Original Message - From: Alan D. I'm sorry, OM, but this is the K3 list! :-) Seriously, though, I don't know what you could adjust. The bandwidth is controlled by altering the bias voltage on the variactor diodes associated with the four-pole IF crystal filter network, which is done by the front panel MPU in response to operator input. Do you experience a noticable bandwidth reduction as you select the narrower filter settings in normal operation? That effect is very obvious on my K1, as determined by the elimination of nearby signals as I choose the narrower settings. The narrow settings are very effective! I've never used Spectrogram...it seems like overkill for the K1, and it is not called for in the official alignment instructions. In fact, it has occasionally caused problems for people who used it to align precisely the receiver, and then made the (wrong) assumption that they shouldn't have to readjust the alignment of the same caps/coils for the transmitter. But alignment of the filter board for transmit is far more critical than the alignment for receive. But none of this has anything to do with what you are talking about. 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Yes...bias is settable independently between the FP and RP mic connections. Although you can have both mics connected at the same time, you do need to use the menu entry for MIC SRC to select the mic you want to use, or to select Line IN. I like to keep this menu item programmed into one of the PFx buttons. When you have the menu open and make your selection, you tap 1 to toggle between hi and lo gain, and tap 2 to turn bias on or off (these apply to the FP and RP mic options). - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 K3#0009 On Tue Oct 30 4:06 , David Ferrington, M0XDF sent: I have an HM10 dual I'm planning on using with my K3 - did you find any issues with setup for a Goldline. Re: [Elecraft] Question: Over-voltage protection (OVP) for K2, K1
Brian, Were I to do any kitting up of OVP parts, I'd probably just use the Power-One modules, which cost around $10 and $16 for the OVP-12 and OVP-24 respectively. Without the economies of quantity-purchase discounts and streamlined production, the price for a kit would probably be somewhere between $30 and $60. That's just a guess, and a wild one at that! Then again, one would probably consider the OVP as the price of insurance, because it surely doesn't do anything on a daily basis. But when you need it, you really do need it. 73, Alan Alan D. Re: [Elecraft] [K1] Spectrogram Question
Clark, What were you using as input to the K1 antenna? You must have a source of wideband noise that is well above the noise floor of the receiver to see a well defined passband shape in the Spectrogram display. If you did have a good display of the passband shape, and you see little reduction in the width of the filter, then yes, you may have a problem and need to 'take out the screws'. If you do have such a problem, it can probably be traced to the varactors used to vary the capacitance in the crystal filter or the control of the voltage applied to those varactors. 73, Don W3FPR Clark Macaulay wrote: I finally decided to test my older K1 with Spectrogram and found the BFO frequency so close to the center of the filter it wasn't worth the trouble to pull the screws from the cabinet and try to get the BFO moved closer. [Elecraft] Mic selection (was K3 - very brief first impressions)
AB7R commented: Although you can have both mics connected at the same time, you do need to use the menu entry for MIC SRC to select the mic you want to use, or to select Line IN. The description of the MIC SEL menu setting indicates you must choose one audio source. I would hope provision can be made in the K3 to simultaneously enable Line IN and one of the mic inputs. This allows driving Line IN with a DVK and using front panel mic connector for spoken audio during ssb contesting, hopefully with independent gain settings. On the Orion, contesting software optionally mutes the mic input during DVK'ing (via software, turns mic gain to 0 during DVK'ing and then restores mic gain after DVK'ing). 73, Barry N1EU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I plan on using the ProSet-K2 from the front mic connector and the HM10 on a boom in the back. I think the Proset will need bias (does it?) and the HM10 not - I haven't figured out from the op manual whether the bias is settable on a per connection basis yet? Yes - you can set bias and gain *range* from the main menu separately for the front and back mic inputs. You do have to set which one is active, and you do have to set the gain level from the knob on the front panel *I think*. It wasn't a concern of mine so I don't know if they save the value when you switch between front and rear connector. The ProSet-K2 does need bias and you can set that separately for front and back connector. The invoice was dated 26th October and was sent by 1st class post! Having paid by credit card via the web site for Parcel Force I tried to arrange delivery to my local post office... The web site didn't understand so I had to phone the 0870 premium rate phone line (why do they do that), speak to a robot thing and arrange re-direction to my post office. That seemed to work. I could have driven a round trip of 70 miles to collect the parcel or taken tomorrow off work to be at home when someone may (or may not) have delivered the package. Oddly enough, the option of having Parcel Force leave the package at my local post office involves 48 hour delivery and a 50 pence collection charge. All in all, not an exciting experience. Hope this is of use for those in the UK buying Elecraft kits and planning to take delivery by USPS Express Mail International. 73 Dave, G4AON K1 delivered in 4 days back in 2002 K2 delivered in a week back in 2001 K3 delivered in weeks... Re: [Elecraft]US Postal Service Express Mail to the UK - update
The other USPS option, Priority Mail, is cheaper and therefore presumably would take even longer. There is little to choose between the two UPS options Elecraft offers - they are both about twice as expensive. I wonder what an air courier would cost? I have heard a lot of bad things about DHL, but when I did get something through them a few years ago, they invoiced me for the customs charges so it didn't hold up delivery. Another possibility would be FedEx. Still it all seems a bit academic at the rate the K3s seem to be trickling out of Aptos. I don't know how to speed that part up. For those interested in shipping times to England, I recently sent a KPA100 from North Carolina to a ham in Barnstaple, England by USPS Priority Mail and it was in his hands 13 days later. Times will vary, but if I understand correctly, much of the time variation seems to be time waiting for the customs and VAT collection people to do whatever processes that they do. 73, Don W3FPR Karl Anderson wrote: I mailed a KX1 to a client using International Express from Oregon to Exeter and it arrived within a week. [Elecraft] I NEED HELP WITH MY K1
I have a K1 problem. maybe there's someone out there that can point me in the right direction. First some background: I am an experienced developer and troubleshooter and have designed and built many rigs as well as many kits including the K2 #848, the Sierra, and dozens of RockMites and more. But this K1 has me stumped. Here are the symptoms: No RF output. RF present on base of Q6 but No RF on the collector of Q6. The receive side appears to be working OK. I have traced the RF from the VFO through the filter and all the way down to the the driver. By the way, I have replaced Q6 [2SC2166] just in case. I originally ordered the K1 with the 4-band filter last year but due to other priorities didn't start building everything until around April of this year and have been working on it when I have had the time. But now I am devoting full time to it. My intitial testing was blocked because of problems with the 4-band filter relay switching so decided to order the 2-band filter (since it is a much simpler device) to help me debug the K1 problem. This has worked so far and the 2-band filter is working normal. Once I get the K1 problem fixed, I will work on the 4-band filter. The test equipment I am using is a Tektronix dual-trace scope, digital voltmeter, two RF probes, XTAL generator (adjustable output). My current testing is using 7030 KHz input and output. STARTING ON PAGE 5, APPENDIX E, K1 MANUAL, REV F. Here are my results from the signal traces. Although the receive side seems to be working OK, I am also including the signal trace. The amplifiers were delayed for a time when new FCC regulations came out which permitted operation on 10/12 meters out of the box as long as certain other frequencies were blocked (and I think some other things). In my opinion, this meant that the amps and the K3 would be coming at more or less the same time. [Elecraft] The K3 in J3
Here is a short report from this weekend's contesting with a K3. I am just back this evening from J3, where I operated 20M phone in CQWW from J3A with my K3. If you worked J3A on 20M, you heard a K3 and probably me. The K3 performed great under high RF conditions, both local and on the crowded band. I think 20M, especially during this part of the cycle is the most crowded of all the bands. That is why I decided to use the K3 on 20M. Our setup at J3A is mostly temporary antennas erected for the contest. The 20M antenna, which was a 3el tribander, was in close proximity to the 15M antenna, which was a 4el monobander. All stations had a single ICE bandpass filter in line. We used N1MM logging software, which interfaced well with the K3. A single RS232 cable gave computer control of the radio, as well as PTT and CW (which I did a little of outside of the contest). A single audio cable was used from the laptop to the rear line in jack so that we could use the sound card voice keyer. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to fully understand and adjust all the parameters. I think it performed well enough in this instance, but probably I could have had a little better audio. I monitored the PA temp during the contest and it didn't exceed 50C or 51C. Of course, the ambient temp was rather warm too. The fans were was quiet, so much so, that I had to check that they were running. The DSP filters worked great (I had the stock 2.7K and 500Hz CW roofing filters), although it took me a little bit to get used to the method of adjusting the filters. They worked great to get rid of adjacent interference. I was chatting with one of the other ops in the airport today. He was quite astounded at the difference between the K3 and the other radios we were using, with respect to the filtering. The noise blanker was helpful as we had a lot of impulse noise, both man made and from Mother Nature. There were a number of thunderstorms that passed through the area. The NR worked, but I didn't get to figure out the new algorithms before the contest. As a matter of fact, I had downloaded the latest firmware a few hours before leaving and didn't get to try it out until I was there. The new firmware changed the NR GUI which threw me for a loop at first. I will have to play with it some now that I am back. Most of the other ops didn't have a problem figuring out the radio on the fly, most of it was intuitive. The small size and weight of the K3 made for easy transport. I took the radio and a power supply on the plane as carry on with no problems. This will be a killer dxpedition radio because of that and of course by its performance. I will see about gathering some pictures from the rest of the gang and post them somewhere. We ran into a couple of the guys heading to PJ2T and V26B in the airport in Puerto Rico and had to give them a showing of the radio. We had enough to actually set it up and run it, but we didn't think it was good idea to do that in the airport :) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K1 PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
After following up on a hunch, I came to the conclusion that the only thing it could be was R30 (3.3 ohm from Q6 emitter to ground). This would prevent Q6 from conducting. I went to the QRP parts box and found some 2.2 Ohm resistors that I keep to bias the output transistor on my RockMites. Close enough for government work! I pulled R30 and tested it with 2 ohmmeters and it showed an open on both of them. I tack soldered the 2.2 in its place, went into the K1 menu, set the output to 3.0W, and put it in tune mode. VOILA! 3.0W showed on the LCD. IT'S FIXED! I kept looking at Q6 and all the components over the past few weeks but kept ignoring R30 because when has a resistor ever been open in a QRP rig? The only thing I can tell is that it was open when it came out of the box. Sorry to get eveybody all set to tell me all the things I need to check. It works! Now I can install the KAT1, KNB, KBT1, and align the 4-band filter board. Unless somebody says something different ... I will keep the 2.2 ohm in place instead of running out to the local electronics store and getting a 3.3 ohm. 73 to all, N.T. Yes, it was felt here in Santa Cruz pretty good (which is about 5 miles from Elecraft HQ). No damage though, all is well AFAIK. Believe me, here in San Jose we noticed it also. Luckily no damage here, but the phone lines are jammed... RE: [Elecraft] 5.6 Earthquake very close to San Jose
I was raised east of Los Angeles and the saying went, It's not an earthquake unless there were whitecaps on the waves in the swimming pool! Then, as an adult Californian who had lived through dozens of the things, some big enough to knock me off of my feet, it was kinda ho-hum when the ground rocked hard enough to make me think I had a flat tire on my way home from work near San Francisco one afternoon in 1989. It was after I got home that I learned the freeway I frequented through Oakland had collapsed and people had died, crushed in their cars under tons of concrete. I still miss the old downtown Santa Cruz where I often had coffee and where other people died when the brick walls fell on them that day. Nothing about life is more fragile than life itself. [Elecraft_K3] We're dieing out here... Doesn't anyone have one yet???
Does anyone have their K3 yet and able to give some information regarding pros and cons to the rig. I've read the three write ups on eHam but would love to her one of these rigs up and running. Someone please post some word on this rig. Paul - K5HSV Yahoo! Interesting; I was on the ARES/RACES net when one of the ops came on with the news. We were preparing for another of our drills so we can be prepared for this type of occurrence. Kevin. [Elecraft] Re: [K3] Second Run
Jeff, like yourself I'm in the 2nd run, but would suspect by the lack of [K3]It's here messages on the refector, that the 19th of Nov is probably very optimistic for Run 2. In all honesty I'd be quite surprised if I see it by Xmas, but we can always hope!! I'm a bit confused by the info on the shipping pages as it keeps changing, and the cut-off for the various runs also seems in a state of flux. When I first ordered back in June, I thought (according to the info on the Elecraft site) I had just missed out on Run 2 and was in run 3. I now find that I have made it into run 2 by about 4 months ?? Good news ?, well yes, but it looks like run 2 is actually going to ship a lot later than the original run 3. I suppose some clarification would be nice, but at the end of the day it's not going to get here any sooner knowing, so we'll just sit back and wait until the slip of paper lands in the mail !! I wonder how many other K3's were in the CQWW contest at the weekend ?? Worked J3A, but wonder if we worked anymore from VK1CC?? David, VK2NU Is it too early to ask about the likelihood of the 2nd run of K3's shipping on the 19th? :) I'm eager because I'd like to take it to KH6 for CQWW CW which falls on the following weekend (of course, I could pick it up from Aptos, since I live in Santa Cruz) :) Jeff N6GQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Re: [K3] Second Run
There's little sign of the first run! I phoned them a couple of weeks ago and was told my K3/100 modular kit (ordered on Monday 30th April) would ship last week - w/c 22nd. No sign of it on my credit card and no communication from Elecraft. It might be a Christmas present to myself at this rate... 73 Dave, G4AON ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
