Re: [Elecraft] K3 Boxes

2008-02-21 Thread Björn Mohr
The box I received my kit in is just a plain box, no customized shock
absorbers that would hold and protect the completed radio. I move mine
around in a padded back pack but a pelican case or similar would also a
solution.

I wish radios would be delivered with a protective bag. If you ever buy the
Italian SPE Expert 1K amplifier you will find that it is delivered with a
nice looking and well padded bag. I think this is a great idea that should
be considered by radio manufactures. But in I guess in real life cost
control would get in the way of that.

Re: [Elecraft] VP6DX Success Due to K3's or Antennas?

I agree! Although the K3 is a great radio, 90% of the mojo is antennas and
location. If you are really interested in the secret of vertical antennas
near salt water check out this site;

RE: [Elecraft] VP6DX Success Due to K3's or Antennas?

2008-02-21 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Being on the edge of a huge salt-water pond gives VP6DX's verticals an
advantage no "land lubber" can hope for. There's a lot of interaction
between the electromagnetic wave and the earth from a vertical antenna for
many wavelengths from the antennas. Real "earth" - dirt - is a terrible
medium. It's sort of the world's worst dielectric, even when soaking wet.
But salt water is a different story. It's a very efficient medium for the RF
to interact with.

There's a reason why so many DX-peditions like to find themselves on a small
rock in the middle of the ocean, and it isn't just for the view.

[Elecraft] K2: Low power out on 12M & 10M

2008-02-21 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
K2 # 6254 Only abt 1W out on 12M, 5W out on 10M. Worked FB when I assembled
it last fall. I've been all over the 12/10M bandpass components with fresh
solder.

I went through TX alignment & found 20/17/15/12/10 all improved - but only
ended up with the above power levels for 12/10.

I have not compared voltages band-to-band at the bandpass output yet, will
drag out the scope tomorrow. Then I'll look at the 12/10 LP filter area.
Any other quick-hitters I should look at before I pull the bottom rear
cover?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] VP6DX Success Due to K3's or Antennas?

2008-02-21 Thread K4tmc

I don't want to spoil the Elecraft Mojo theory, but does anyone have any
details, other thqan what is on the VP6DX web site, on what antennas they are
using with the k3's?

Do the vertical dipoles have parasitic elements? Are they using low-loss
coax? Etc. Inquiring minds would like to know.

My K3 is a super CW rig and a poor SSB rig. at least to this date

1. AGC blasts from weak to strong sig... does not smooth out the audio
enuf.

Vy short tone sigs pierce my eardrums.
No excuse for this problem.
A fix, pse???

2. Tighter than 2.20 and the SSB audio really degrades.
This is either a great filter system or my earlier rigs'
(Mk 5 etc.) nice 1.8 INRAD filters were not that sharp.
Below 2.00 on ssb and the voices lose too much of
their intelligibility, sad to say, because I need
1.8, or so, to kill the guy 2 kc above.

3. Many ssb sigs sound harsh and too sharp even
at 2.8, especially when 5 or more are calling at
the same time. Adding bass with the cut knob helps some.
Using Heil ProSet Plus.

4. NR at any setting degrades weaker ssb sigs beyond
usefulness. Why is this?

And, the temporary info that appears BRIEFLY in the
vfo B window is too brief for me.
A fix, pse

I gotta get my shack computer on line agn to get updates. In my
appliance op uses to date, K3 is not sliced bread on ssb.

RE: [Elecraft] Roofing Filters

2008-02-21 Thread Brett Howard
So in reading the inrad description of roofing filters at:

http://www.qth.com/inrad/roofing-filters.pdf

It seems that they all but tell you to buy the elecraft 5-pole filters when
talking about 500Hz and narrower bandwidths. Does this hold true in the
case of the K3 in that the higer pole count results in a lower "roof" I
guess you could call it and then end up needing more gain in the next stage
therefore ending up with less dynamic range?

Hi Roger,

You can not, and never could, send FSK when Data is set to Data-A. You need to
HOLD the Data MD button and then select FSK-D, not Data-A. Data-A should be
used
for audio based data modes like PSK (if not using PSK-D), SSTV, MFSK...etc.

Don't forget to set your pitch to match what MMTTY is using. Do this with the
same
PITCH control you use when in CW mode.

What is going on? I am using the same setup I used a few weeks ago: FSK input

You can adjust this acg response if you want flatter , refer to manual
and adjust to personal taste from flat (limiting ) like to the icom 7800
to very rounded Like some k2's
there is a lot of control over how the AGC works

use high and low cut on the filters, perhaps Taylor the RX EQ to suit
your ears.

noise noise reduction, in DSP can not, (no mater what code is used)
deliver the impossible and render readable an SSB sig that is brueid in
the noise. the K3 noise reduction is the best I have heard on any radio
to date but I still prefer it off most of the time and let the brain do
it

Yes. However you must first open Router and set the Radio

it should. The display of the low cut freq. though will go up to some
point, and then wrap around again to 0.00 and then increase from
there. The audio sounds seamless, just the display jumps back to
zero. It looks like the hi-cut and shift and width affect the
actual freq where the display wraps.

Anyone else notice this? if so, I'll drop a note to Elecraft if they
haven't read it here already. :)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 as a SSB rig

Excellent SSB rig.
Only outstanding SSB issues as far as I'm concerned are the lack
of audio punch (compression vs clipping) and the SSB RX DSP
offset. I'm sure that both of these will be resolved.

I placed my order at the end of Sept, 2007. I received an e-mail order

then.

I e-mailed a few days ago to include a CW filter with my order and very
quickly received another cheery reply to acknowledge the order change.

Things are fine. I'm Back to waiting patiently.

Re: [Elecraft] K1, KX1, K2 antenna tuner high-impedance feed capabilites

2008-02-21 Thread Sandy

I second this motion!~
When I lived in the city for years, I could never put up a decent 80 meter
antenna. I don't work the "high bands" much and don't like BIG beams. Too
easily damaged by high winds, lightning, etc. Also a big maintenance
problem, as I don't REALLY like climbing towers! nowadays I'm too damned old
for that foolishness!
I used a short "L" end fed antenna about 125' long on all bands. When you
run 500-1000 watts out, this makes for a very strong RF field in the shack.
I had a very extensive grounding system using several ground rods in mucky,
very wet/high water table in the New Orleans area. Connections were all
made using 3" wide copper flashing strip, which we commonly used in marine
installations. Regular wire, 10 guage stranded, or "old coax. braid" or
regular 3/4" tinned braid (now prohibitively expensive in 1" or wider
sizes!) usually didn't "cut it". The flashing is easy to get under a window
as well. SOLDERING ALL connections is recommended, especially if exposed to
the weather. Don't rely on "clamped" connections whenever possible.
Anyway the flashing system clears up the "stray RF" problem except in VERY
stubborn cases. Nowadays, all this digitally controlled stuff has a
tendency to go "bananas" with stray RF floating around. If you have any
"control cables" to other devices associated with your transmitter, run a
strip of flashing on the wall, between the devices, tied to the main ground
buss and run your cables on top of the flat flashing. This seems to
equalize the RF potential on both ends and enroute. Some of the last
digital GMDSS stuff I installed years ago refused to work properly until
this was done due to "stray RF" problems. The whole idea is to get all the
chassis/cabling at least at the same rf potential, even if there is still
some RF voltage being induced in the system.
Anyuway, I had pretty good luck with the "voltage fed" antenna even though
it was kind of in a bad location on a small city lot!

I've used an end fed dipole (i.e. half wave wire) a lot. I'm currently using
an end fed 80 meter dipole in my fixed-station setup. Such an antenna
presents quite a high impedance at the end, of course. That impedance is
outside the range of the KX1, and probably the K2, although I haven't tried
it on the KAT2 tuner for the K2. However, you don't have to be very far off
of exactly 1/2 wavelength for the tuner to find a match.

Normally, I use a link-coupled tuner when feeding such antennas.

As you probably know, the closer you can get the antenna to exactly 1/2
wavelength at the operating frequency, the lower the ground return losses.
Indeed, at 1/2 wavelength long it doesn't really need a ground except that
without an RF ground the rig will tend to "float" up to the high impedance
so you will have "rf on the rig". For that reason, it's a very good idea to
plan on some sort of ground: 1/4 wave counterpoise, etc. The antenna is
efficient without it, but the ground will help hold down the RF voltage on
the rig.

The KX1 tuner has the most limited range of all the Elecraft tuners to date.
That's because of the very small space available for coil/capacitor
combinations on the tiny board inside the KX1 case.

I'm interested in using portable end-fed halfwave antennas when I'm
out camping. I have a Norcal BLT tuner that is a absorptive Z-match
type, suitable for this type of high-impedance tuning and loading.

I'm finishing my build of a K2 right now, just about to add an
internal tuner to it, and I also plan to build a KX1 in the near
future (and who knows, maybe a K1 as well?). I'm wondering whether I
should add the tuner in, or just carry my BLT around with me?

Since many of you are QRP buffs, and have possibly had occasion to use
this type of antenna (and maybe even the BLT) in portable locations,
could you tell me if the internal tuners in these rigs are capable of
feeding this type of antenna successfully? I don't just mean to ask
whether an L-match or T-match type of tuner will handle a high
impedance load, but also whether the best power transfer is happening,
such as what the BLT will do?

Thanks in advance,

Stewart,

I also use a Microham device (MK2R+). Click SETUP for the radio port on the
PORTS
tab. Set the radio to NONE and disable querries. Save the configuration as
something like "K3 Firmware". Now it should work fine. It may be a little
slower
than a straight native COM port, but it has worked fine for me for the past 4
months or so.

Now whenever I need to update, I just click that preset and there's no problems.

Re: [Elecraft] K1, KX1, K2 antenna tuner high-impedance feed capabilites

2008-02-21 Thread crstrode

My K1 with atu was just recently completed. Like you, I have plans for
portable ops.

So far, I have only ventured out into the back yard with various wires flung
over the trees, hung from the second floor balcony, etc.

The antenna showing the best promise is the classic end-fed half wave Zepp.
I've only made one so far - cut for 20 meters. It consists of a half wave
radiator fed by a 1/4 electrical wave length of 300 ohm TV twin lead. One
of the twinlead wires is connected to the half-wave radiator, and the other
is unterminated.

At the rig, both of the twinlead conductors are connected to the RF output
via a BNC to binding post adapter.

The 1/2 wave of twinlead serves to significantly reduce the feedpoint
impedance, allowing the KAT1 to do its job without a balun, or an external
tuner. Does a bang-up job on 20!

I have also loaded this antenna up sucessfully on 40 and 30 meters.

On 30 and 40 I tried it in various configurations - ground side of the twin
lead disconnected, ground side of the twin lead disconnected and tied
directly to earth ground, an additional semi-random length counterpoise
added to the rig ground, etc.

The K1 and KAT1 have so far managed to load up and produce good QSOs in
every configuration. That chunk of twinlead is doing some genuine mojo.

I have yet to make any defendable measurements of SWR, Impedance, etc. other
than those provided by the KAT1. Frankly, the accuracy of the KAT1 SWR and
power output indicator does not impress me as being of much value beyond a
go or no-go status.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 with Microkeyer2

2008-02-21 Thread Greg - AB7R
I have been doing this with no problems using an MK2R+. It does load a bit
slower than a native COM port, but its
still fine. I changed the radio port as Joe mentioned and just saved that as
one of the presets "K3 Firmware". So I
just click the preset before uploading the FW.

Yes. However you must first open Router and set the Radio

The radio control port on DigiKeyer is implemented through
an external microcontroller. For Windows, Router implements
a virtual port. However, there is no equivalent for Router
for OS 10 systems; Kok Chen (uH Router/cocoaModem) and Don
Agro (MLDX) interface directly to the microcontroller for
radio control with all of the microHAM interfaces (except
USB Interface II).

they are good to at least 4x the K3 output power...

However, I've used BNC's on mine. Oak Hills Research

Re: [Elecraft] [OT]VP6DX on 160 - GOT HIM!

2008-02-21 Thread Greg - AB7R
When I got home from work yesterday I installed some supports for the open wire
feedline to keep it off the ground
(short 4-ft T-posts with a 5-ft PVC sleeve). I splieced in the feedline (did
not have time to solder it - thats
today). The 240 ft doublet is fed into the BL2 and then to the K3. The tuner
had no problem tuning it on all bands,
160-6M. I proceeded to work VP6DX on 30 CW and RTTY and also got them on 160.
I had one radio set to get them on 40
SSB and the other on 80 CW, But for 3 straight hours it was EU ONLY. Needless
to say there was frustration! But was
glad to get them on 160.

You can adjust this acg response if you want flatter , refer to manual
and adjust to personal taste from flat (limiting ) like to the icom 7800
to very rounded Like some k2's
there is a lot of control over how the AGC works

select lo-hi cut and adjust, it's fine, I regularly use 1.8 or less on
SSB here

use high and low cut on the filters, perhaps Taylor the RX EQ to suit

noise noise reduction, in DSP can not, (no mater what code is used)
deliver the impossible and render readable an SSB sig that is brueid in
the noise. the K3 noise reduction is the best I have heard on any radio
to date but I still prefer it off most of the time and let the brain do
it

Hi Stewart,

I'm sure it's just in a coma and wonder if anyone here knows how to
resuscitate prior to Aptos waking up; maybe I should play some music to
it, always thought the K3 would be a Frank Zappa sort of radio.
There must be contingency plans for repairing wiped out firmware such
as would happen if a power cut occurred mid way through a re-flash so
I'm not panicking (yet).

Try doing this:

Forcing a Firmware Download

If you accidentally load an old or incompatible
firmware version and find the K3 unresponsive, do
the following:

(1) unplug the K3 from the power supply and wait 5 seconds;

(2) plug the power supply back in;

(3) hold the K3?s POWER switch in; after about 10 seconds, you?ll see
the TX LED flash (you?ll also see MCU LD on the LCD);

(4) load the correct firmware version.

From page 42 of K3 Owners Manual C1.pdf

vy 73 de toby

Toby and Ken,

I tried a 'Force Firmware Download' but got the response from the K3
Utility of no response from the K3. Then I remembered I use a virtual
com port via my Microham cw keyer and the usb router; this normally
works fine but I tried a direct hardware comm port connection and the
'forcing' worked! so all is well now and many thanks for the quick
responses to you both.

Presumably the interruption screwed the virtual com port software
interface while leaving the hardware port unscathed. I've just
reconnected the Microham and reset the port settings and all is back to
normal between the radio and upload utility.

Re: [Elecraft] Best way to secure RF ground from 2nd floor?

2008-02-21 Thread Jim Miller
i believe the originator had said that he has a centerfed dipole with a
balanced feedline.

i think the first thing the lead wire should come to is a suitable matching
device. i use an elecraft t1 which works well for my qrp activities. the
coaxial input to my t1 has 10 inches of suitable ferrites on it to act as a
common mode rf choke to keep rf off the exterior of the coax regardless of
it's length.

that ensures that whether the feedline is perfectly balanced or not all of
the rf is properly contained inside the coax. the tuner itself is likely a
bit hot but it is of no consequence.

my next oft delayed project is to build up a simple insertion/extraction
pair for a bit of dc onto the coax to remotely trigger the t1 tuning cycle.

When I first viewed it (before I got my rig), I did not think a whole
lot of it. But now, after mine is complete, this is a GREAT "video"
to watch. It is really that simple and he takes you through just
about every step. Some other guys have posted photos of their build
(I have not viewed them all) and some range from just few slides to
over 80. I think this video sums it all up nicely, especially with
the narration.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 comatose

2008-02-21 Thread dj7mgq

(1) unplug the K3 from the power supply and wait 5 seconds;

(2) plug the power supply back in;

(3) hold the K3?s POWER switch in; after about 10 seconds, you?ll see
the TX LED flash (you?ll also see MCU LD on the LCD);

(4) load the correct firmware version.

Have you tried the Help menu item in the K3 Utility Program? Here is one
thing is suggests...

~~

Forcing the K3 into "firmware load required" mode

To force the K3 into a state that it requires a firmware download,

   * Unplug the K3 from its power supply for at least 5 seconds.
   * Plug the power supply back in.
   * Press and hold the K3's power switch in for about 10 seconds until
the red TX LED begins to flash.
   * Click "Check Versions Now" on the Firmware page.
   * Click "Send All New Firmware".

This is always assuming the problem was caused by a serial port
contention of some sort...I'd closed the ports in Logger32 but
still had the telnet open though not that sure why that would
interrupt the PC to K3 comms.

Hi,
I am a new member to the elecraft reflector.
I ordered my K3 on Feb 9th 08. Can someone give me an idea when it will be
shipped?
My best guess is that it will come sometime in May.

[Elecraft] RE: K3 with Microkeyer2

2008-02-21 Thread Peter Bacon
I have tried unsuccessfully to upload K3 firmware upgrades via my Microkeyer
II and use the KUSB cable instead. I have my Microkeyer talking to the K3
at 38400 bps all the time. I found that I would get part way through a
firmware upgrade and then it would hang up. I recommend you stick to the
KUSB.

Can the Microkeyer II USB interface be used to upload firmware upgrades with
the K3?

Al,

In fact, Mike Higgins (K6AER) gave it a four rating on February 8th
(see < http://www.eham.net/reviews/review/67088 >). Still the average
score is 4.96, which is 5.0 when rounded to one decimal place.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with Microkeyer2

2008-02-21 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Well, I couldn't use the DigiKeyer on a Mac - I think the software may need
to treat it slightly differently than just a plain RS232.

David Fleming said he might consider looking into it if enough people needed
it.

I just bought the KUSB along with the K3 and that works great - its not much
of a pain to switch the connections, when I want to do the update.

[Elecraft] Back ordered filters

2008-02-21 Thread G4ILO

I see the shipping status of the FM filter is shown as 20 February. It is now
February 21st. Is this item finally shipping?

Also, what about the 500Hz CW filter? I only discovered this was back
ordered when my K3 kit arrived in mid-January without it. It is not shown as
out of stock on the website. Have others whose K3s were delivered at that
time now received their 500Hz filters? I would not have thought I needed to
ask for it to be sent, especially as I have already paid for it.

[Elecraft] [OT]VP6DX on 160 - GOT HIM!

2008-02-21 Thread Ken K3IU

After reading Tom's (N0SS) email yesterday morning, I became motivated
to try and snag Ducie Is. on 160m. My antenna is an 85 ft doublet CF
with window line up abt 32 feet on one end and 20 feet on the other.
I've never had much success on 160, but I tied the 2 legs of the
feedline together, connected it to one side of the balun, and ran a
short piece of wire from the other balun connection about 8 feet over to
my outside ground rod, and fired up the K3. It's a cold morning here
(abt 20F), and between my furnace running and normal atmospheric noise,
all I heard was noise. When the furnace stopped, WOW! There he was. He
was listening "Down 3" so I set up VFO B, split, and fired away. Got
him... second try (0856Z). I am amazed. Those guys are GOOD! It must be
awfully quiet out there in the middle of the Pacific.

Wh, Indeed! Try it... it might work for you, too.

$450.00 plus shipping for all. I also have a KXPD1-K2 mounting bracket which I
