Re: [Elecraft] K3 Variable amp keying delay >>not long enough!!??

2008-05-08 Thread David Cutter
I would be tempted to replace the 120VAC relay with a dc relay and key it
directly from the rig. Don't forget to fit a diode across it to squash the
back emf. This may have other ramifications and might not be this simple,
but it's well worth consideration.

David
G3UNA

The FAQ for the K3 promised a 0-50 ms amp keying delay. We got only 0-20 ms
in the latest release.I don't think 20 ms is enough in my case, based on
my primitive research. Several "experts" have said mine might need as much
as 30-35 ms. My amp's relay is a 30 yr old Potter & Brumfield open frame
model with a 120vac coil.

To make things worse, since the K3 will not switch 120vac, I must use
another relay with a 12vdc coil in the line between the K3 and the amp,
which in turn pulls in the P&B relay. This exacerbates the matter by taking
even more time, and I'm afraid to try anything for fear it will damage the
K3 and the amp. Am I wrong?? Anyone care to comment??

One of the many reasons I bought the K3 was to be able to operate at least
semi break in CW and VOX with my old amp without hot switching, by virtue of
having ample switching delay. I've waited months for the feature and am
disappointed..

However, I hasten to add this: As a K2 user/owner/builder, I expected much
in the K3. I got much more than I expected. I gave up a nice Icom Pro 3
for the K3 and don't miss the Pro 3 one iota. The K3 is unbelievable in
what it can do and how superbly it does it. And getting new firmware is
icing on the cake.

But I sure wish I had 0-50ms amp delay capability! How about it, Wayne?

Re: [Elecraft] Bluetooth to RS232

2008-05-08 Thread J-F VA2SS

Hi,

I don't know, but if you stay around your rig, I think you don't need much.
With an antenna, bluetooth standard area is around 10m. So, I would guess
that very near, within a meter, only a small wire should do the job. Just a
guess

And yes, this is really cool. Because I have only one serial port on my
laptop, I can now use my SCS PTC-IIe with my K2 and have the control feature
by using bluetooth. Less cable is something quite useful.

If you try it with this interface, let us know !!! :-)

[Elecraft] Filter set up.

2008-05-08 Thread Mike Kasrich
Well SN 790 is built no real mechanical issues. One large inner tooth
lockwasher was missing and a longer black screw to fix the transistor to
the bottom cover.

I was performing some of the set up at the end and was having trouble
setting the bandwith for the filters that were installed. The menu
shows the 2.7 filter in FL1. I have a 250Hz filter in FL4 but when I
tap 4 to select that slot, vfo a doesnt let me select 250 for the
bandwidth. Am I missing something step wise? Been building for abt 7-8
hours straight so I may be a bit foggy.

I started with DC. APP connectors are firm in their sockets and no
wiggling causes outages. When I installed the front panel, I was keenly

Fw: [Elecraft] K3 no issues with output power on ssb!

2008-05-08 Thread n4lq

Is the K3's wattmeter a "peak reading" type? If so, it only kicks up to
about 50 watts until I increase the TXG VCE to 3 db which makes it double
to

100 watts. So far, audio reports are good. Someone here reported distortion
of some kind when doing this however. I really need a proper external peak
reading meter to check this. Most of them I read about are not accurate. I
might order the Palstar. It seems to have a good reputation.

I ran the test this morning with no error message, however instead of
clicking along at a very good clip, it began with the word "busy" and

I can now hear traffic (net on 3.905 mc)!

Well then I got home this evening and found the K3 doa. When I push the

This bums me out since I finally got the REF and SYN to play nice and I

To make things worse, since the K3 will not switch 120vac, I must use another

pulls in the P&B relay. This exacerbates the matter by taking even more time,
and I'm afraid to try anything for fear it will damage the K3 and the amp. Am

ERR TXF normally indicates CONFIG: FXTX is not set correctly (p.44 and 51 of
manual). It should be set to 2.7 or 2.8 for both CW and SSB.

[Elecraft] A Better Way?

2008-05-08 Thread Dave Agsten
It seems like many folks on here have THEIR "better way" for Elecraft to do
just about anything and everything. Instead of being satisfied with all of the
good things that Elecraft does do, they find all kinds of things to whine and
complain about. They seem to have a better way to do the firmware upgrades,
design the hardware, update the documentation and manuals, etc, etc.

How about letting Wayne, Eric and company do what we already know they do best?
Suggestions are fine and they seem to appreciate them. However, just plant the
seed and don't go on for paragraph after paragraph of just how it should be
done. I'm sure many, like myself, get tired of paging through all of this junk
while looking for things that might be helpful.

What other radio manufacturer even offers a forum like this? Focus on the good,
make a straight to the point suggestion if necessary, and stop whining and
complaining. It seems like many must spend more time thinking about posts than
operating their K3s and other Elecraft radios. Get on the air.

Well done Wayne and Eric. Keep doing things your way. It works.

Dave N8AG

I agree, it would be great to see a video of the K3 demonstrating its
abilities. A DVD could work, or they could make them even more
convenient to watch and take the approach that TenTec did and put the
videos up on their website. See http://radio.tentec.com/video (Or do both!)

You Tube videos just don't do it justice. I would like to hear it as
well as see it since I can't get my hands on one. Of course, I'm sure
they are so busy right now that there would be very little time to

Re: [Elecraft] K2 troubles

2008-05-08 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scott,

Did you take good care to observe proper anti-static measures (wrist
strap and anti-static pad) when handling and installing the new
microprocessor? If not, the new microprocessor may have been damaged.

Try putting the old on back in (observing antistatic precautions) and
see if it restores proper operation - you will, of course, have the
original problem back.

I was very careful to install it correctly with

Could this be another bad microprocessor,

[Elecraft] Elecraft email List Official Guidelines

2008-05-08 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Elecraft Mail LIST GUIDELINES

For those of you who are new to the list, (and for those of us who have
rapidly failing memories..), here is a quick list of things to remember when
posting to this list. Please save this for future reference.

The most important thing to remember is that this is only a hobby - Let's
have fun!

1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is
done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent
to elecraft@mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it
shows as subscribers will be rejected.

This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you use an
alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too.
Subscribing with [EMAIL PROTECTED] from your physical address of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to
the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not
match your subscribe address..

Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to
change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list
preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page
and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent
to you by email when you subscribed (and monthly afterwards.)

2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large
file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web
page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list
strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep
the archives at a reasonable size.

3. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an
-ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies. Always delete -everything- from the prior
post except what is necessary to keep your reply in context. Most copied
messages can be reduced to one or two sentences to retain context. Remember to
delete the email list footer from the previous post and especially avoid
copying a long posting and adding 'Me Too!' or something similar. As the
number of users on this list grows (over 1500 now) we need to work to minimize
information overload... If a reply is -not- of interest to the list, just
reply directly to the posting party.

4. EMAIL OVERLOAD:
If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list,
You can view the daily Elecraft list messages for each month in web
format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated
hourly and list postings by subject. Just click on the ones you are interested
into read. You can also set your list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery,
which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest.

You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a
single compilation each day.

To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to:
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft
Scroll to the bottom of the page to log into your preferences page and set
your mail options to 'no mail'.

4a. Please make an effort to keep list volume under control by resisting the
urge to post a comment on every long discussion thread (CW, Soldering etc.) With
close to 2,000 list subscribers volume can quickly get out of control if
everyone feels the need to comment. while we do not overly restrict the subject
matter on this list, please remember that its primary focus is on Elecraft
products, and their use. Many people rely on it for pointers on building and
troubleshooting their kits.

4b. *** [NEW] When emailing about a specific rig or option, please add the
rig/option name(s) to the first part of your email subject line. (K1, K2, K3,
KX1 etc.) This will be a huge help for those experiencing email overload and
will allow automatic filtering based on subject line.

Examples: "Subject: K3, Filter Options"
"Subject: KX1, How to use ped portable?"
"Subject: XG2, Wow! Its a big help.

5. *** IMPORTANT - PLEASE KEEP ALL POSTINGS CORDIAL.
Restrain the urge to email someone admonishing them about a posting.
The last thing we want to do is to scare anyone off the list. Overly aggressive
postings and negative comments about other posters only serves to scare away new
potential list members. Waiting over night before hitting 'send' really helps
to put things in perspective..

If you have a complaint about someone or a thread please email it directly
to me ( eric(at)elecraft.com ) and I'll address it.

5a. Please do not post publicly or privately asking people to stop a particular
thread, no matter how long, off topic or repetitive it gets. Email me instead
;-) . I will step in when I feel it is necessary to end a thread.
(eric(at)elecraft.com)

5a1. Please exercise restraint in posting when a thread is getting heavily
covered. 30 posts on one topic in a day (like the recurring CW thread) is
usually excessive.

5b. Please do not post any direct attacks or

Your 2.7 / 2.8 filter is not setup for the transmit mode. I found the
filter setup in the K3 firmware updater application much easier to use
than the config menus. Take a look at your filter settings with that,
and the issue will likely be obvious.

You must have the 2.7 or 2.8 filter (which ever you have) set as your
transmit filter for each of the modes.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 v K3

2008-05-08 Thread David Wilburn

I still like my K2, but I am very happy with the K3.

I had never gotten around to setting the K2 up to work digital modes,
or so I could use N1MM and send CW from the computer during a contest.
All those have already been done on the K3 in a short period of time.

In the past, I was often running with the pre-amp on in my K2, and
until I got lower impedance headsets, and kicked up the audio gain on
the DSP, I was always at a want for audio. I have yet to turn the AF
much above half on the K3, and the RF gain tends to stay at about 2
o'clock.

I can quickly and easily change the sidetone frequency if I like
without having to re-align the rig.

After most of a week of playing with the K3, last night (the bands
were noisy) I broke down and played with the NR. I haven't even
turned it on up to this point.

Before getting the K3, I could never of considered parting with the
K2. It will now be a travel rig. While it is now conceivable to part
with the K2, it would only be done to replace it with another K3.
Something I'm sure I won't be able to accomplish in the near future.

Gary the numbers might be close at 5 kHz but the K2 (I have #4119) badly

Sherwood's IMD results at 2 kHz:

K2 S/N 1140 - 70 dB
K2 S/N 3170 - 80 dB
K3 (S/N in the 100s) - 95 to 101 dB (depending on XFIL)

The K2 is a great little rig but it's frankly out of its league when you
start prowling 160 for weak signals in the presence of very strong local
signals.

display changes to 7.035, then 8.035, then 9.035, then 10.035 (about
half a turn in all, at the 5 MHZ/turn rate); you then let up on the
COARSE button and tune the VFO normally to 10.101 where, having
entered the 30m band limits, your settings for this band are restored.

The Band+ and Band- are fine for ham band switching. But for general
coverage navigation a real band switch, as above, would be preferable.

Now, you have complained about having to button-push through every
intermediate band to get to a desired ham band. Could this be
alleviated somewhat using the VFO knob as a ham band only switch? Say,
by holding the FINE button you could step through the ham bands using
the VFO knob, perhaps more conveniently than "PUSH PUSH PUSH...", In
other words, map the ham bands to VFO knob rotation while the FINE
button is being held.

Anyhow, these are just suggestions, not necessarily feature requests.
My only request is to get my K3 (few more weeks!)

Thanks Don, the 2.7 KHz filter is selected for CW and SSB.

Also FL1 FRQ is defined as -0.89. I get no change in received tone when
switching from CW to CWR.

I have also received the error message ERR TXG when attempting to set
transmitter gain on 160 metres.

I have a Bird thruline wattmeter in line with a dummy load and I have never
yet seen the K3 move the needle on the Bird dial :-)

I have the KAT3 ATU and when tapping ATU TUNE 5watts appears on the K£ RF watt
meter but there is no movement on the Bird needle.

I have the KPA3 but I presume that there is no point in installing it until
thie problem is resolved.

[Elecraft] K3 Vox works here

2008-05-08 Thread Mike Scott
I read the posts about VOX breakage in the most recent firmware so I decided
to test mine. Mine seems to work okay.

VOX gain = 76 Anti VOX = 30

$10 ham fest mic (Hisonic HM800) connected to rear panel, RPH mic gain = 30

Good audio reports on this mic by the way. It comes with a cheap XLR
connector/cable that could probably use an upgraded connector. I find that
the connector contacts are a bit loose. No PTT, here is what it looks like:
http://www.hisonic.net/HM800.htm
I have seen them at two swap meets (Pacificon, TRW) for $10.

[Elecraft] K3 DVD?

2008-05-08 Thread Gary D Krause
It would be great if Elecraft would sell a DVD of the K3. Since it's hard to
get a good picture of exactly how it sounds and how it operates. A nice demo
would be good for those of us considering it. You Tube videos just don't do
it justice. I would like to hear it as well as see it since I can't get my
hands on one. Of course, I'm sure they are so busy right now that there would
be very little time to produce one. But, it's just a thought.

Greg, it doesn't matter how long I hold the TUNE button for - it doesn't
produce any power. The rig has never produced any power at all.
When the TUNE button is pressed for two or three seconds then VFO A shows zero
power - zero meaning 00 watts.
When the rig is in TEST mode there is no power out - as expected.
When the TEST mode is normal there is one bar showing on the rig RF meter.
During ATU TUNE there is five watts showing on the rig RF meter.
At no time is there any indication of power transmission on the Bird meter.

I've been trying to solve this problem since yesterday. I went through the
configuration very carefully before I reported the problem to the reflector
in order to ensure that it was not a simple mistake on my behalf.
No one on the reflector has made a suggestion that I had not already
condidered.

The receive quality on SSB is superb, as is the CW and AM, it is the best
receiver I have ever heard apart from the Drake R-4C which I have. But you
don't need me to tell you that.

In my opinion the only people who have the equipment and the knowledge to find
the fault quickly are working in your premises.
I may be wrong and it could be a simple error in configuration that I have
overlooked, I would be delighted if someone could inform me of that.
The current firmware has been installed three times in case there was a
glitch.

The rig was put together very carefully and slowly using an anti-static mat
and a grounded wrist strap. No problems were encountered - it is a masterpiece
of design. I have carfully assembled two K2's SN's 413 and 5901 without any
problems at all. I am currently using K2 5901 on CW and frequently receive
unsolicited comments on the quality of the tone. It is a fine little rig that
gives me great pleasure. I consider the the five month wait for the K3 has
been well worthwhile but now I am faced with disappointment and worry as to
how this issue is going to be resolved.

The manual doesn't actually say scanning should stop, but it should

Also, "channel hop" scanning (mainly for 30m) doesn't work.

I suspect these are waiting for future firmware - ?

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Firmware Fatigue - was K2 v K3

2008-05-08 Thread David Yarnes
I may be the eternal optomist, but with regard to the K3 I an not
particularly worried about these software glitches. I got scared away from
the original Orion because of problems like these, but Ten-Tec seemed very
obviously to be floundering as to what to do next. Not so with Elecraft. I
can only imagine the difficulty in getting things right, but Elecraft is
putting a lot of effort into doing just that. Ten-Tec, on the other hand,
has left a bunch of folks hanging while their attention was diverted
elsewhere. If you watch that reflector you will know what I mean. I know,
for example, that a lot of folks are using a much earlier version of the
Orion I software because it sort of works for them, while the later version
still has big issues apparently.

Wayne and Lyle, and others, are pretty much focused specifically on getting
the K3 just right. Knowing that, I don't seem much reason to kick and
scream or throw darts. Their "pride of authorship" will get us what we want
and need a lot quicker than spears thrown in their direction. And I know
Wayne doesn't punch out at 5 p.m. He takes his work home with him! I
happened to work him on 40 CW a while back--late at night by the way--and he
mentioned he had been working on the software. I have a sneaking hunch that
some of that so called vacation time he just had was spent doing the same
thing.

I know these glitches are frustrating. But I am reasonably sure this stuff
isn't all that easy. I'm equally sure that these folks are smart enough to
figure it out successfully. Remember, we are kind of plowing new ground
with some of this radio software stuff. Personally, I think it's
fascinating what apparently can, and will be, achieved in due time.

As for myself, I have been sort of dragging my feet on some of the software
upgrades. I'm still using 1.75, which generally works pretty well. I'm
letting everyone else shake things out first. I know I'll be upgrading soon
enough. I'm anxious to see things work better, but I'm not losing any sleep
over it. I have been assured that the things I've noticed as being less
than satisfactory will be dealt with. I have no reason to doubt that, so
I'm content to give them time to do it. And although it has been said
before, I'll repeat it--there isn't any other radio I know of where the
users are communicating so openly with the designers to obtain desired
changes. Maybe there will come a day when I feel some disappointment with
the K3, but I'm sure nowhere close to that point currently. I could
probably be critical of Elecraft about several things, but being responsive
to their customers sure isn't one of them.

[Elecraft] Bluetooth to RS232

2008-05-08 Thread Mike Scott
I liked the K2 Bluetooth serial adapter project.

I Googled Bluetooth serial adapters (there are quite a few) and ran into an
A7 Engineering product.

http://www.a7eng.com/products/embeddedblue/serial/eb501-SER.htm

It is lower cost than the Socket Bluetooth adapter.
It looks ready to embed (doesn't have to be disassembled). It needs an
antenna. I wonder how I would mount an antenna on a K3; if it were internal
it seems to me that the case would severely impede signal.

ERR TXF is a recently added error code (see the errata

"The crystal filter selected for transmit in the present

Be sure to specify the correct filters in your configuration

Don,

Perhaps you have suggested one possible solution to making the output from
DSP sound less harsh ('yucky' is a better term IMHO), add some harmonics of
the desired output signal. I can't at the moment see how this could be done
with relatively simple circuitry which would have to distinguish between the
desired output signal and any unwanted artifacts at the DSP's output, and
not introduce any additional undesired artifacts. Just a thought not aimed
at any particular radio which uses DSP.

Mike,

I believe it is all in the perception. The K2 is all analog (unless the

advantages and artifacts to contend with. Analog can soften the
background noise while the digital DSP can reproduce it 'in all its
glory'.
I equate this perception to the folks in the audiophile world who claim
that vacuum tube amplifiers are better because they are 'warmer'. Actual
measurement will show that solid state amplifiers can better duplicate
the input waveform while vacuum tube gear adds 2nd and 3rd harmonic

To each his own. Remember that perception is 99% of reality.

[Elecraft] K2 vs K3

2008-05-08 Thread Gary Gregory
I have adjusted the RX EQ to alter the sound of the audio and in particular
when using the 1.0Khz filter.

I have now achieved a somewhat rich tone (to my poor old ears) that is
pleasant to listen too. I had no idea just how good I could make it when
using the 1.0Khz filter on ssb when I started but it sounds pretty good to
me.

Anyway, I was surprised just how nice it sounded compared to my K3.
