In Reply to [Elecraft] [K3] what kind of solder and flux?

Guys,

Per Elecraft's website http://www.elecraft.com/repair.htm The use of
acid-core solder, water-soluble flux solder, or any corrosive or conductive
flux or solvent will void this warranty in its entirety.

Beyond that:

1) Leaded solder is preferable for hand rework as lead-free solder requires
a higher temperature and special tips. (Your normal leaded solder tips will
not last long if used with lead-free solder.)

2) Mildly activated rosin core flux (RMA) is preferable.

3) No clean flux requires a higher activation temperature and if not fully
activated its residue can pose a fire hazard.

[Elecraft] K1 band module.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 noise blanker sure does the job.

2008-06-24 Thread drewko1
You can try switching off a suspected street lamp by beaming its
photocell with a laser pointer. The photocell is located on top of the
lamp housing. It is directional, usually oriented toward the north
(but not always) so you would have to spot it with the laser from this
particular direction.

You could go around the neighborhood with a portable radio and a laser
pointer, trying each lamp. Or set up a recorder at your rig, tuned to
WWV time signals, and log the times when you switch off particular
streetlamps. Having a tripod for the laser pointer might help. A green
laser will make a nice beam which you can see, not just a spot.

How you explain your activities to the cops when they pick you up is
another story...

[Elecraft] K3 2.02 firmware

2008-06-24 Thread Julius Fazekas
I attempted to change my filter (going narrower in CW)
width while transmitting and was unable to do so. I
thought this was one of the items that was going to be
changeable while in Tx. Is this not possible?

Generally, if I start a run, or am trying to pull a
particular signal out during a run, I have changed the
filter width during Tx (with the K2).

It's a minor issue, more of a preference thing, but
would be nice to have...

Re: [Elecraft] K1 band module.

2008-06-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

The K1 4 band board has only 2 low pass filters, so the band
combinations are limited. 40 and 30 meters can share the same low pass,
and 20, 17 and 15 can also share a low pass filter - so with the 4 band
board, it is 40 and 30 meters plus your choice of 2 bands from the 20,
17, 15 meter combination.

The K1 can remember settings for 6 bands, so you can use the 2 band
board to fill in any gaps that your 4 band board does not cover. If you
have the same band on both boards, it will work, but the operating
frequency calibration setting will only be remembered for one of them,
so it is best to have the 2 band board setup for bands not covered with
the 4 band board.

Band kits for the 2 band board are available from Elecraft, so you can
change the bands covered, you are not slaved to the bands currently
installed on that board.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] AFX operation

2008-06-24 Thread John H Gibson
Hi Lyle,

Thank you for your explanation of how AFX works; I now better understand how
AFX currently behaves. While listening to cw, I find that increasing DELAY
shifts
the apparent source of a cw signal further to the left, which makes me believe
that AFX delays the right stereo channel.

AFX does provide a nice spatial sense of the sound (albeit with sound sources
shifted to the left of center). I know that your plate is full right now, but I
was
pleased to hear that you are thinking of a a future AFX with that spatially
locates
a sound source based on its pitch.

I have recently begun experimenting with my K3's AFX feature...
This is not what I expected. What am I doing wrong?

The K3 does not provide a space based on pitch which is apparently
what you were expecting. That effect is on the list of things to
consider for the future.

BIN provides a fixed phase shift between the two channels.

DLY provides a fixed (but user selectable) time delay between the two
channels. I use DLY 3. Wayne prefers DLY 5.

This is *all* what we call psychoacoustics, mainly because we like to
use 5 syllable words to impress :-) Different listeners react in
different ways to these settings. There is no correct one; use what you
prefer, including OFF.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Transverter Control Cable

2008-06-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bud,

The transverter cable needs only 3 signal lines plus ground.
AUXBUS K3 ACC pin 2 to KXVxx pin 6
KEYING K3 ACC pin 10 to KXVxx pin 9
+12 VDC K3 +12 volts output to KXVxx pin 8 (other methods can be used.
but the KXVxx uses this input to sense when the K3 has been turned on).

Ground K3 ACC pin 5 or 12 to KXVxx pin 1.

That should provide you with a transverter that works with the K3. If
it does not work properly, plese let me know.

I can not find the text definitions in the manual (Rev C-1, Nov 18, 2007), or

Re: [Elecraft] SMT Work In The Ham Radio Shack WHAT TOOLS Are Required..?

2008-06-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Andy and all,

While there are several exotic tools and materials available for doing
SMD work, I would prefer to speak to those who might only do it on
occasion - maybe a single project that does not require such things as
soldering paste and heat guns.

About the best reference I know of for working with SMD in the ham shack
is contained in the instructions from Tom Hammond for the SMD version of
the K6XX CW tuning indicator. You may download that pdf file from Tom's
website www.n0ss.net.

A short version of the technique is to use small diameter solder (too
much solder will cause a real mess).
Just apply a small amount of solder to one pad (a corner pad for an IC)
- then position the component and heat that pre-soldered pad (this step
will stick the component in place). Now solder the other lead(s) and go
back to the first one if there is any doubt about its integrity. Mop
up any excess solder with solder wick and you are done. Steady hands
are also helpful, but if one has learned how to support and work with
unsteady hands, it can even be done by those folks. I would say that
everyone needs to experiment a bit before tackling something important
and of value. There are small inexpensive projects (Softrock for one)
which serve that purpose. Another low or no-cost practice item is a
scrap computer card or board - that can give you experience in removing
components and putting them back on.

So if you already have small diameter solder and a temperature
controlled iron, you only need some solder wick and some device to pick
up and hold those tiny components. One big hint that I can offer - do
*not* attempt to use curved nose tweezers, one cannot control the
squeezing force and they are guaranteed to launch the small components
and make them 'vacuum cleaner fodder'. I use straight tweezers with
tips that taper to a point with good success, YMMV. A tube of solder
flux comes in handy at times when the solder just won't flow right, and
a magnifying device of your choosing is almost mandatory - even if you
don't need it for soldering, you will need it for close inspection.

There are several sources of information on the web about using solder
paste, toaster ovens, heat guns, etc. If you are going to be doing
quite a few boards and don't mind the expense of these tools go for it,
but SMD work *can* be done easily with the tools many builders already
have available.

Don W3FPR

Hi, Andy:

Your e-mail system has the hiccoughs! (Several copies of your message
appeared!)

You emphasized tools, but the tools needed depend upon the way you go about
doing the job.

Here's a link I posted previously about SMD work.. It demonstrates on way
to do a good job and shows associated tools.

I have done business with the source, www.curiousinventor.com with good
results. They will provide you with the tools and supplies shown in the
demo.

However, they are over here in the colonies ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K-3 CONFIG settings

2008-06-24 Thread Bob Cunnings
You will find definition for all these in the firmware release notes -
new features are often documented there first, and only later on do
they appear in the Manual.

I do wish that there was a direct link to the *complete* version of
the release notes on the website - at present persons are told to
access it via the K3 Update Utility help menu.

One way to get to it quickly is via the FTP site. There's a link to
the FTP site at the bottom of the K3 Software Page - the file in
question is hfwnotes.rtf.

Steve,

I have used ChipQuik too. It makes getting those multi-legged critters
off a lot easier.
You are correct that the resoldering part can be more difficult. One
must use alcohol to completely clean the area where the chip was removed
or the new solder just will not stick. Put some elbow grease into it
and scrub completely. Even if things look clean, there can still be
enough residual to make re-soldering difficult.

It appears that one can use pin 7 for XVTR ON if it is not being
used for INH (at least that's the case with FW 2.02).

If CONFIG:TX INH is OFF, pin 7 will be 5.0 V when the K3 is on and
will work for XVTR power control. If CONFIG:TX INH is set to either
LO = INH or HI = INH, pin 7 can not be used (reliably) for XVTR
power control.

 Ian,

Based on information I received from Wayne, I do believe that
K3 ACC pin 7 is now dedicated to TX INH. There were complication
in sharing it. If the change is not in the firmware version you
are using, it will be with a forthcoming update. In other words,
it cannot be used for XVTR ON. The +12 volt output from the back
of the K3 should do nicely even though it means Ying out one
 of the cable wires.

[Elecraft] Fw: K-3 Line IN/OUT cables

2008-06-24 Thread Bob Lusby
When I was setting up PSK-31 (Digipan) and RTTY (MMTTY) I found that I needed
to use Stereo cables (both ends) without a stereo/mono adapter for the computer
interface. Then I adjusted the sound card LINE IN/OUT levels for a signal on
left (or right) only. Now I have good level control and, hopefully, clean
signals on those two digital modes.

I simply replied to all. I'd just like to see things remain civil and while
some things are not wanted by a few there are many who do like them. I was
making no accusations to anyone by copying them on the email. I was just
trying to inform some about the fact that the K3 production reports are
appreciated by many. I get a lot of comments off list about the graphs that
I provide reflecting K3 production and wait times.

Hi Brett,

A pity you quoted me as well on this one. Actually I don't have a problem
with the Katigram stuff, at least it relates to K3's and doesn't start an
interminable OT thread. I was keen to see progress towards my own K3
despatch.

I can make all the trouble I need myself without help from others!

RE: [Elecraft] SMT Work In The Ham Radio Shack WHAT TOOLSAre Required..?

2008-06-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Chuckle chuckle...

I always read Don's messages because they contain much useful stuff!

I got a big grin out of his comment about curved tweezers because my curved
tweezers are exactly what saves me from launching SMD's all over the room.
It's a classic example of how personal the choice of tools and techniques
can be in this work.

I *always* rest my hands on something when working. That's one reason I
ignore a pc board vise most of the time and simply lay the board on the
table. If it wobbles, a small weight (roll of solder or tool) will hold it
nicely.

A comment about soldering: Many folks get away with larger solder sizes by
putting a drop of solder on the iron and carrying that to the joint. After
all, they say, that's how a wave soldering process works on a much longer
scale, isn't it? The short answer is *no*! When you apply solder to the
iron, you see the fumes arise for a moment. That's the rosin flux boiling
away. By the time you reach the joint with the solder, the flux is all gone
and there's nothing left to clean the surfaces to produce a proper solder
bond. If you're going to carry solder to the joint on the iron, a dab of
rosin flux on the joint *first* is a must. Otherwise, use a small size
solder that lets you melt it directly onto the joint where the flux will do
its work before boiling away and without leaving you with a glob of excess
solder.

Flux is sticky, which helps hold tiny parts and a tiny drop of solder on the
iron does it with SMDs. My usual technique is to put a dab of flux on the
clean pads, put the part in place, put a drop of solder on the iron, use my
curved tweezers pressed together as a fine point pressing the center of the
part to hold it steady, and touch my wet iron to a solder pad. By 'wet' I
mean a very small amount of solder. Often one can't see anything but that
the iron appears tinned. (It's much easier to add solder than it is to
remove it.)

Getting back to launching parts from the table, a bit of nylon stocking --
(okay, I'll get out of the 19th century) -- pantyhose over the suction end
of a canister vacuum will often find a bonanza of missing parts and you get
a clean shop floor in the process. Just be sure you ask the XYL for some
discards. She won't appreciate the big stretched bump left by the suction
hose ;-)

Oh, you're a bachelor? Aw, g'wan, go to the store and ask the prettiest
clerk you can find what size she thinks would fit you. That'll get her
undivided attention long enough to explain what they're really for and ask
her out for coffee at least. One cheap pair will provide dozens of bits for
vacuuming - enough to cover any self-respecting bachelor's vacuuming needs
for a lifetime, or at least until the pretty lass moves in.

Re: [Elecraft] SMT Work In The Ham Radio Shack WHAT TOOLS Are Required..?

I'm sure that everyone here would be VERY interested in folk's out
there

ideas ...know-how's
...PICTURES (hint hint !) and website links for sure...

Apologies if this has been discussed previously to this depth... Just
thought it an interesting Thread for everyone involved newbie's And
Pro's alike..

Well, we all have our own opinions. I have built several boards using
a standard iron with a small tip and small diameter solder. I was not
pleased the the result as I never quite got the parts to lie perfectly
on their pads. A query on the SoftRock list brought several responses.
As a result I got a $20 heat embossing gun and some solder paste.
Total investment: $25. It works great but the embossing gun *can* get
the board too hot if you are not careful.

Since I found myself working on multiple board and with the prospect
for more in the future I ended up investing $80 in a temperature
controlled hot-air rework gun with multiple tips to direct the hot air
where I want it. I find it perfect for rework on SMT boards. I can
easily remove a single component and then put it back in again. I find
it even works well on through-hole boards for getting things like
chips out.

So, for someone starting from scratch:

1. heat gun -- an embossing tool or, better still, a temperature-
controlled hot-air rework tool;

2. a syringe of solder paste.

The solder paste has a shelf-life of 6+ months when kept in the
refrigerator.

So you can approach this any way you want to. I personally find that
an $80 temperature-controlled hot-air gun with solder paste works
really well for me.

YMMV.

[Elecraft] Re: KIO3 CW bug?

2008-06-24 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Joe,

This has been corrected in firmware rev. 2.03 (field test release from
two weeks ago). Also corrected was loss of filter bandwidth settings on
band change (FA and FB commands), DATA A and PSK-D mode set/get
inversion (MD command), and power control QRO/QRP reporting in
extended mode (PC command)..

Revision 2.10, the latest, will be going to beta tonight or tomorrow.
Full details on CAT command changes appear in the release notes under
MCU 2.03.
